- It’s time to repair the Rear Main Seal (RMS) and Positive Crankshaft Ventilation (PCV) on our Volvo 850. After doing some preparations in part 1 it is now time to turn our attention to removing the gearbox, clutch, flywheel and then finally replacing our rear main seal!

Project’s Background Story -
On February 21 ’09 our dad bought this ’96 Volvo 850 2.5L 20V estate. The Volvo has a big emotional value for us and seeing the car sitting still for so many years and watching nature taking over broke our hearts. After nine years, and sitting outside for 7 of those 9 years, we finally got our hands on the 850 and brought it back to its home where we will restore it to its former glory. Once we finish the restoration, we intend to make a road trip and keep in the family for many more years to come. - Авто та транспорт
I see you struggled with the driver side axle as well XD
I struggled with it a few months ago when I replaced the axle seals.
For me the easiest was to just keep rotating the axle untill the ring falls in, it hardly took any force to get the axle out, just some time to allign the ring inside the axle.
Well that makes sense! Definitely had luck on our side then as we only turned it a little bit and then immediately came out😄
Really looking forward to manual swap my T5R. Removing the gear box looks like a lot of fun.

I think it would be helpful if you listed out all the part numbers of the new parts you're installing, along with maybe a screen shot of all the new parts out on the table. Just a suggestion.

I wonder if it doesn't look easier to lift the engine out than getting it at it from underneath?
So what you reckon, on low value or un-loved Volvos this RMS would be uneconomic and the end of the car probably? I was quoted £1000 by the Volvo dealer for this job on my V70R Phase 3 a few years ago. Looks like a bargain! I sold it before it was terminal.......what an epic job, though I suppose this is where Volvo come into their own, what other car this age would have bolts underneath that never moved in 4 decades and just crack with a little effort and hand turn?
What are your experiences with that aftermarket catalytic converter? The one I had made the 850 unbearably and annoying 😅
Well, not sure if ours is an aftermarket one but for now it works just as it should🤪

Yes it is😄 and to give you a little inside information. We are working on a video exactly as you described. The story is written down and we are gathering footage of him and us and this 850 in between the other videos. We are aiming to release it as soon as we hit 5k subs as a little extra "celebration" video😊
At around 25:45 there is a slim wire ring laying to the left side that came out of the axle seal, but I'm not sure you put it back in once the new seal was in place?
@charleswestbrook118 You scared us there for a second🤪. But it is the old one. The new seal has one of those rings pre-installed😊

Did you guys ever get around to replacing the leaky heater core? I thought you did but can't find the video
Well, it was not leaking so we have not yet replaced it. I'm sure it will be one of our future repairs though😅
@@MusTRitch You sure about that? The floor being wet on the driver's side is a telltale sign and having had to replace the PCV system I'd say it's almost certain it's leaking, it's the kind of thing you don't want to go fully bad in the middle of the highway.
You could always check by putting some tissues under it and checking if they got wet after a long drive
@Hnrm well, not 100% sure. But we found no leaks (yet) and the drivers side window was open for many years so we figured thats why it was all wet. We'll keep an close eye on it though. Beeing over 27 years old it's bound to start leaking somewhere in the near future😅
Heater core is extremely easy to replace on 850 and x70 cars, black bin bag, some tape and 30 minutes is maximum time it will take you.
