I’d take a Ruger 57 if it weren’t for the ammo prices of 5.7. And general lack of practicality of it for a concealed carry caliber.
It also has a manual safety. 🤮
To be fair, when I started typing this comment I didn’t realize it had an external safety lol.

One advice I may give you: it is usually not worth to pay twice or thrice the price if the more expensive gun is just 10-15 % better than the cheaper one. The many comparisons between the 600 $ Ruger 5.7 and the (allegedly) 1.200 $ FN FiveSeveN prove it.

I really believe it is the magazine because my Ruger 57 has the same issue with BOTH of the magazines it came with. Sometimes also, it will shoot the first two or three rounds and the other rounds are stuck and not pushing up because the follower gets stuck. If I take the magazine out and tap it to free the follower, the rounds pop up and a few rounds will fly out of the magazine. And this happens with both of the mags it came with. I lubed both of the mags and it kinda fixed it, as in it the follower doesn't get stuck anymore but the nosedive feeding issue still happens from time to time on both magazines still.

there has def been some ppl with the first batch guns that complained about one or both mags having some issues. I did see a case where both mags had lips that were slightly either too long or out of spec and was hanging up. As well as one case where one of the mags was either too thin or maybe the mag latch location was out of spec so the mag wouldnt stay in. Mine have been flawless, but I do kinda gripe about how much wiggle the mags have when loaded, I always have to tap on the mag just to make sure its fully seated bc of that amount of wiggle. Love the pistol though and 5.7 is my fav round so when these came out I needed one as my fun toy since I had to sell my p90 a couple years back to get caught up on some bills

The ballistics of the round leaves larger wound channels than a 9mm, 10mm, .45, and .357. The bullet dies at about 12 inches of ballistics jelly. It is a very low liability round. Kill your target, and not anything behind it. It's an AWESOME carry. Lot's of damage, low liability, lot's of rounds in a mag.

    • @ElectricLarry__
      @ElectricLarry__ 2 роки тому +7

Actually, the 5.7 can get up to about 16 inches with loads like the FN ss198lf's and ss195lf's.
They can reach velocities ranging from 1976 to 2150 fps out of a Ruger 5.7 and even higher out of a 8" AR

    • @zacholicious1060
      @zacholicious1060 2 роки тому +18

I agree with both Rex and Larry on this. For common ball rounds with lead core like American eagle or other more common practice type of rounds at a lower cost (comparatively for the cost of a 5.7), Rex is 100% right, the round tends to dump a lot of energy very quickly. It can fragment and tumble. This tends to produce a large wound cavity, without over penetrating, maximizing pain and reducing an enemies ability to stay in the fight. I don't think the 5.7 adds extra lethality unless you consider reduced recoil and flatter flight dynamics that allow a skilled marksman a better than average chance of putting a kill round on target after a center mass hit.
Larry is definitely right that rounds that are not lead cores, like the ss198lf, have ballistics closer aligned to how FN designed the round for military use. Civies will never get the steel/aluminum armor piercing cores, but when the core of the bullet is a firmer substance then lead with lower chances of deformation or fragmentation because of its thin size, that quick dump of energy goes away. A major secondary component is the higher velocity as well. Further, armor piercing abilities return, especially with the swarm of bees approach, and you see that 12+ inch penetration rate the FBI requires reliably return.
It's a versatile round. You get near home defense type of returns on lead bullets on the lower spectrum of bullet quality (large wound cavities and reduced over penetration) and better armor piercing functionality (within approximately 35 yards) and common penetration for non lead core rounds. Unfortunately the 5.7 remains one of the least understood rounds despite NATO's standardization of the cartridge. Just wish it cost less lol

Yes I paid a lot for the pistol but it was the only one one the market. I think it's great Ruger came out with this pistol and more affordable for most. Ruger has had many years to figure out what people didn't like about the FN and manufacturing cost have improved over the years. Great review on the 57 by Ruger.
I am a 57 owner too. Love it!!
I have hopefully useful info /answers to 2 of your questions...
    But here goes:
    1) You asked about if the mag release is ambitious. YES. There's instructions in the owners manual on how to remove it from one side and swap it to the right side for lefties. So really, save the slide release, the gun is mostly a ambidextrous gun. If they had a slide catch/ release on both sides it would be 100% ambidextrous.
    OK:
    2) You asked about a trigger upgrade... well, there is a GREAT one.. It's by a company that's made Ruger trigger mods for years and they do it well... lTANDEMKROSS!!! That's what you need. It only about $60 bucks. It's Aircraft grade Al and cnc machined...black anodizing or its available in red if you rather. I choose black. Their trigger is a great upgrade. It's much improved over the stock trigger on the 57. It gives user adjustable post and pre-travel and gives this gun a totally different purchase on their trigger. Its face is flat with a nice "knurl" like texture to it and it's just a slightly longer triggrr that gives the perception of a lighter trigger pull by giving you a slightly better leverage against the spring.. (like a breaking bar with a pipe over it).
I highly recommend this trigger upgrade. I did the install myself, a little tricky but TANDEMKROSS has a great video on the install which recommend you watch, twice if needed.
I wish I could include a few pics or short video to let you see..
Take care and I Love your channel.. you give sound advice and seem genuine.
You should review the BRNO FK 7.5mm PSD pistol. The make a 7500$ big brother that's all steel but the PAD is it's $1650 dollar synthetic lower version of the same gun. It may be the last Pistol I buy. It comes with a 9mm +p+ rated barrel too. It racks like the slide is on ball bearings!!! It's amazing. With it 7.5mm proprietory round made just for this gun by BRNO and it can easily penetrate IIIA armour at 25 yards and still leave a grape fruit sized cavity in clay blocks after going through a full 7.62x39 metal mag and the armor behind the 7.62x39 filled AK mags in front. MAC does a fantastic review of this gun.
2000 fps muzzle velocity... it can carry the force energy a 45APC round has at 25 yards but it hits that hard at 50 meters/yards .
Chk it out. You can order a 10mm/.40 s&w barrel too.
It comes with the extra 9mm barrel. 7.5mm ammo is about 60$ a box. The se area in cost of 5.7x28mm ammo.
Also CMMG has a new product..
The 1st civilian gun that shoots 4.6mmx30mm that the h&k mp7 uses. Talk about expensive ammo.
The sell a pistol version (8" barrel) (banshee), a Carbine (16" barrel) and a rifle with a 20" barrel. All are in the $1300-1600$ price range...
Lastly, you need to chk out the Alien 9mm by LAUGO ARMS Czechoslovakia.
Its a hybrid delayed blowback/ gas impingement operating system with a fixed barrel and the slide is short stroke and operates/moves below the top plate the sights are mounted. Thus the sights never move as the gun ooerates!!!
Its $ 5000 price tag puts it out of reach for me. The barrel is the lowest in the gun I've seen. When holding the Pistol, the barrel is BELOW Your thumbs. The recoil is straight back into your palm almost. It's crazy. It's awesome.
I dont have a comment on its reliability but if it does well over the next few years and if the price comes down, I'd love to own one but it too, like the steel lower version of that BRNO 7.5mm field pistol, is just crazy expensive.
I hope you read this and I hear in future episodes that you read this and those reviews of those 2 Czech made pistols plus updates to potential 57 Ruger owners, the info on the ambidextrous mag release and that trigger upgrades are out there and affordable.
Again.. Love you channel..keep it up. Happy holidays to you and your wife!!
    Sincerely, Daniel.

I've had mine for 2 months and at first with federal ammunition there were malfunctions. changed to fiocchi range dynamics 40gr and ran 15rds per mag until maybe 100rds then 20rds with no malfunctions all the way through approximately 600rds. once it "broke in" it you could go slow or rapid or mag dump up to 5mags in 40seconds it was flawless. I like hitting steel at 75-80yds then switch to a target at 25yds and have 5rds in a 1.5 inch circle. I do have a vortex venom that I love. I found an ar vertical hand grip with bypod that helps me "cheat" at steel just past 100yds. That's fun. I like your reviews and your honest and genuine. I just want to tell how mine was. Thanks for the review. I was looking at the Ruger 57 last evening at my local Rural King, priced at $688. It is a really nice looking hand gun, extremely light and a very impressive 20+1. You mention difficulty finding a holster for it. My EDC is a Ruger SR40c. I carry it in a FOXX Kydex Hybrid IWB holster. I was comparing the 57 with my SR40c and they are almost identical in size except for the length. The 57 is about 1-1/2" or so longer in length but considerably lighter than my SR40c. The Ruger 57 was a perfect fit in my FOXX Kydex Hybrid IWB holster.

My Ruger 57 is about a year old, but I have only shot 300 rounds thru it. The first box of 50 was jam after jam. Then I discovered that the way you load the magazine can make a significant difference. If you push the round straight down (don't slide them in). They seem to feed much better in the gun. 300 rounds are not enough to make a final judgment, but I have not experienced a jam in the last 150 rounds loading it this way. Overall, I am pretty satisfied with the gun. I did not buy it for carry; I bought for fun at the range. Would I carry the 5.7? Well, not sure. I normally carry my 1911 (45) or my CZ SP01 (9mm). 2 notes for your jamming issue, first the American eagle is a solid copper point that does not feed as well as the vmax fn ammo (plastic tip filled hollow point) and second the mag if not loaded correctly with the last round or mashing in the 21 round (yes it will fit) will jam. I have run over 1k rounds thru mine and have had only the feed issue with the AM eagle when the last round loaded is not seated correctly in the mag. Another interesting note is the AM eagle ammo has a higher velocity then the FN ammo blue tip (2200 vs 1700) in my tests.

gotcha, I appreciate the feedback, unfortunately Federal AM Eagle is the only thing I can find. I had issues with the Kel Tec PMR 30 mag when I first got it, a loader fixed that problem. Hopefully the ammo variety in my area improves soon, thanks again.

I've had mine since summer. Got about 200 rounds, mostly practicing drawing from concealment while activating the safety in single shots. This is my first manual safety pistol, I felt that kind off practice would be important.
It's certainly not a comfortable AIWB pistol! I carry this mostly OWB. I sometimes go IWB, depending on the level of concealment required.
What will I do with my Chiappa Rhino!?

He left out significant information. The 5.7 round was specifically designed to out perform 9mm and be able to be used in a pistol and SMG and penetrate body armor. Kentucky Ballistics does a comparison with the 5.7 and other calibers. the 5.7 created a much bigger damage channel than the other calibers. It will go in the size of a pencil and create a tube of damage almost 2 inches in diameter. The larger calibers will go through a target (human/ ballistics gel). Where the 5.7 might not, but will do far more damage to internal organs literally ripping them apart. You get shot in the stomach with the 5.7 you will most likely die within minutes. where a 9mm, 40, or 45 cal you would survive.

I shot 200 rounds FN no issues. I know it’s not a thousand but when I paid 70$ a box. I wasn’t running a thousand. I think this is an interesting round and Ruger needs to make a better drop in trigger and night sights. Definitely feels like a 22lr. And rounds go quickly. Good review

It would be pretty awesome if they come out with a 1911 handgun but with this ammo. I'm curious to how the industry will adopt this round after it opens back up.

    • @Crosshair84
      @Crosshair84 3 роки тому +4

      Easy. It won't.
The round was designed to to ONE thing. Penetrate kevlar out of a blowback SMG. 1. Civilians can't get that ammunition. 2. 9mm AP rounds penetrate kevlar just as well and have better terminal ballistics, so any military that wants AP capability would just field 9mm AP ammunition.
The terminal ballistics are inadequate for self defense. You might as well take a 32 auto and get the benefit of increased consealability.
Small game hunting with a handgun? Neither, Ruger or FN, of these pistols are really built or suited to that task.
Ammunition capacity? It holds 3 more rounds than the competition.
The round itself is nearly impossible to handload for several reasons. The special coating on the cases being required for proper function in P90 type magazines. You also effectively have to hand weigh every powder charge on a balance scale due to how unforgiving it is with powder charge weight. Normal powder dispensing equipment and digital scales are not precise enough.
If anything, it would be fun to see the 7.62x25 make a comeback.
None of this is directed at you personally, just at the idea that 5.7 will ever be anything more than a boutique round.

Another damn great video! You’ve got great skills! Until seeing you shoot, on your videos. I didn’t think much about people making accurate pistol shots, at distances of 100 yards plus. I always figured, that was rife range! When I was in the army, I qualified expert with the 1911. But the distances of the targets, weren’t anywhere near as far away as 100 yards! I don’t remember anymore, but I don’t think they were much over 25 yards. Just gauging off you shooting on your range, while I’m watching all your videos. I’ve become a big time fan of your channel, in the last year and half. I’m now wheelchair bound, and am trying to retrain myself to shoot a pistol at defense ranges. I never thought I would spend a year, watching gun channel videos. Watching and reading on Google/UA-cam sights, about weapon safety issues. The only gun I had owned sense leaving the army, was a Ruger 10/22. Which I gave to my son-in-law a couple years back. Because my body is so jacked up, I can’t hold a 10/22 correctly. How would I ever be able to take aim, with an M10 or M16 again? Plus the fact I had promised myself, I would never kill another person after leaving the army! So I truly hope my G2c and G3c, only get fired for fun and training! Well I just realized it’s 0422 and I’m writing a damn book. Outlaw, don’t change your channel’s format! Hell I might join that Patreon, to get your premium channel. You and your lady take care, and be cool! Be Safe!

I went from carrying a xdm 10mm with extended & ported barrel to the Ruger 57 and I'm enjoying the ruger being lighter and holding 20 rounds compared to 16+1 10mm. I'm mostly Def from a AK so the loudness of the 57 isn't a down side for me. The down side for me is the ruger doesn't penetrate as deep as the 10mm but the 5.7x28 extends my reach easily out past 50 yards. Finding ammo for the 57 isn't a problem for me I have 5 local shops who all carry ammo for it and have some in stock during this plandemic. I am paying $74 for a box of eagle, $84 for FN Hornaday V-Max and $100 for FN green tip. I picked up the Ruger 57 new at a local gun shop on my birthday for $640 out the door so I can't complain much about ammo prices for it

You should make a side channel (just like so many youtubers have side vlog channels now a days) and name it "1000 Round Reviews" or "1000 Round Mayhem", I don't know. You could have play lists for each firearm (or even crossbows and compound bows if you are into that kind of thing) and have the guns reviewed at 100 rounds, 300 rounds, 500 rounds, 700 rounds and 1000 rounds (make a video for each perhaps). You could even make categories (Rifle, Carbine, Pistol, Revolver etc) and list the problems you faced and a summary of your analysis (something graphical maybe). You could also give us an expert advice on which gun wins in each category and why its the best bang for your buck. I remember Iraqveteran started gun videos called "How far will a so and so kill" (man that was a great series of videos), so you can perhaps start something like "how many rounds is a Mossberg 500 Reliable for". May be your channel will really take off fast with such a series. I am just thinking out loud, any ways nice video and sorry for the long comment.

Excellent review, it is still a very niche weapon, I used to caretake an 850 acre property, with camps, it was not posted an used by the public for walking, hunting & fishing. This would have been the perfect handgun for my “patrols” , light weight, big enough to look serious for the two legged users and potent enough for any four legged pests, with 20 rounds to boot! For $799 my 4” GP100 would have had to keep soldiering on
