I may have missed it somewhere, but I'm trying to decide between this curriculum and Sassafras for next year. What is your comparison of the two?

Sassafras uses a spine as story book that follows 2 children as they discover things about each topic.
This curriculum uses encyclopedias as their spine with experiments in the guide.
It's really a matter of preference. If you want cover the info quicker I'd go with this set. If you want to go slower paced as a read aloud Sassafras might be best.
      Hopefully that helps a little

I'm curious if you ended up using Classical Science and Sassafras simultaneously? Could you use Classical Science as a supplement to further the understanding of things covered in Sassafras? Both seem so short and precise that I'm wondering they'll work well together or would be too much? If used, we'd be extending each week to at least two, and completing each sassafras book as a year unit rather than semester.

I'm not sure because I don't have the same subject of both, but I think you would get a lot of duplication in both activities and the lesson topic. We have different subjects, and I have kept them separate. We have done some classical science, supplementing with a lot of extra videos and learning sources. I'm saving the botany for later in the year, possibly in summer time. Hopefully that answered your question, if not let me know :)

@@knowledgebynature8480 When I looked through the Classical Science and Sassafras curriculums, it seems that Biology Grammar covered same topics as Sassafras Zoology, Anatomy, and Botany. I'm curious what the side to side comparison would be is you only used the Plants Unit from Classical Science along side the Botany with sassafras, Animal Unit along side Zoology, Human Body Unit along side the Anatomy. I was curious if they would offer additional resources, activities, and a different approach to retaining the information. From what I can hear you saying is that it's a lot of repetitive information, and same activities.

From what I have noticed in the past that maybe the case, but I'm not 100% sure because I've never had both topics at the same time.

Thanks for sharing! We are using elemental science for the first time this year as well. We started with the solar system unit and I'm still trying to come up with a good flow for our week. I didn't even notice the book list and appendix at the back of the teacher guide! 😂I'd love to hear about your planning for each week. Do you figure out which parts you want to do before the week starts or just follow the plan in the book? So far I've looked over the week's lesson on Sunday afternoon, highlight the things I want to do on which day and then attempt to follow the plan during the week. My daughter also wanted to do the lapbooking and I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. lol

Love that you are using it in a different order!❤ For the most part I follow the 2 day schedule but add in a third day for extra things we want to do (extra library books, additional hands an activities, and videos that go with the topic).
I checked out the lapbooking section with Sassafras one year and it's essentially the student workbook that you cut and paste into folders (granted there are a few more things that you add to it) but the material isn't much different.
If you had the student workbook you could occasionally transport that info into a folder set up and add in a few extras, such as copy work or sketch of the topic. Maybe even find some free printables on the topic to include also. Then she could do the lapbook sometimes but you also wouldnt have committed to only doing the lapbook everyweek.
      Good luck ❤

I just looked on Pinterest and there's lots of lapbooking templates that you might could use as ideas for creating your own using the student workbook.

@@knowledgebynature8480 thanks for responding! I purchased a pdf of the lap book templates. We haven't done lap books before but my daughter is artsy and wanted to try it. Its mostly just coloring and glueing though so we probably won't stick with it. I like your idea of using the workbook as a kind of scrapbook. So far we haven't used it besides reviewing the questions orally. Have a lovely Sunday!

@@heidig8739 Yes I use the workbook as needed or wanted. Last year we hardly ever used the workbook for Sassafras.
      Have a great day!

I realize this comment is a year late, but I have a couple of questions. Did you have any major cons with this curriculum? Do you think 2 kids could share one student workbook?

    • @knowledgebynature8480
      @knowledgebynature8480  3 місяці тому +1

Not too late :) This was a good curriculum that allowed you to build more on it if you wanted. Or leave it as is, I often added in a few more resources (youtube videos) for fun, but not necessary.

There seems to be something wrong with the upload, it says “No stream. Tap to retry” but it does not show anything. Is it just me having problems viewing the video?

Hello. I have not seen anything that is religious in this curriculum. I have not gone through it entirely. I found this site: smarterlearningguide.com/elemental-science-review/
Towards the bottom is this section "Is Elemental Science A Secular or Religious Curriculum?" Where you will might get a clear picture of what exactly might be covered.
