      This here isn't the first time news crews have gone under cover to find shady shit at mechanic shops, My dad tells about a similar event when he was working as a Mechanic. I am not sure if they did two cars in the same place but they hit multiple places with a problem similar to what they rigged in these cars. Of the shops they went to only two of the staff diagnosed and fixed the problem, without trying to pad the bill.
      There are good and bad people in every walk of life, and as the saying goes, One bad Apple spoils the barrel. The jack asses who try ripping people off are far more commonly talked about than Honest Mechanics.

    When I was young and didn't know shit about cars and my low mileage mustang would barely start or stay running. I took it to a well trusted shop in the Cincinnati area and they told me it was the computer and the wiring to the computer and wanted $3500 to get her up and going. All seemed legit to me, I was a kid. Couldn't afford it so had the car towed home and called the ford dealership to schedule a second opinion and the guy on the phone said WTF, dude, it's your AIC valve, very common. Figured out what and where it was, $50 and 15 minutes.
    Now, I can tear apart and rebuild most vehicles.

      Before I knew better, I had my 5.9 Cummins transmission built for $3500 from “a family friend.” (Scheer’s Automotive in Edmond, OK) He told me that the transmission will keep breaking and I need to get a new truck. A month later, it broke, again. I took it back to him under warranty. He told me that the particular part that broke wasn’t covered and that is need to put a new Jasper transmission in for $6500. I said no. If I want to pay $6500, I will have a true built transmission. I took it to DC transmission in Del City, OK. He took it apart and found that Scheer’s Automotive appeared to have just “quick fixed it.” DC Transmission replaced my torque converter, input shaft, clutch plates, the front drive shaft, and the transfer case drive chain for $1500, and gave me a 1 year warranty. I never had a problem again, not only that, I daily drove it on a 125hp tune. Can’t believe a “family friend” would have fucked me like that.

    10 years ago, July 2009, I went to a Goodyear store at Dobson and Main, AZ The crew stood around like I was not even there. No one at the front desk to help me so I walked out and I did not go back until four months ago. Hey everybody deserves a second chance. Same thing happened, no one in the front office and every one at a BS meeting. I worked for Goodyear in the late sixties and it is very sad to see how poor the service has become. All of the crew I worked with would never have let a customer come in without greeting him/her and asking them what we could do for them. So now I will not go back to another Goodyear store until July of 2029.

      im ok12 P0560 something about low-voltage, I went on auto codes.com and enter the code and my vehicle and it tells you the common reason for that code for your specific vehicle, and it turned out that the EFI fuse being blown is one of the causes for the code, the OBD wouldn't reset and when I checked the fuse it was blown, I changed it and was able to reset the computer

Getting told that you need an expensive repair, especially when you don't have the money, is a horrific experience. So many people rely on their car for their livelihood, so when someone is made to believe that their livelihood will be affected they start to panic.

Why is that?" They said that they were what the manufacturer recommended. I said "My car has been running fine with regular plugs...the type of plugs it came out of the factory with...for more than a decade." and I added that if they pop the hood in front of me, and pull the plugs, if they were platinum I would pay them double. They declined. I then asked for my keys and told all the guys waiting that they had better change the shop they use because they have just seen how this one rips people off.

      actually, no that is called maintenance. I'm a mechanic and one of the most important things one can do to to keep their engines in great condition is to change plugs regularly. I always did on any car i owned and always benefited. Right now, i drive a 2012 C250 with a 1.8T gas engine, and i changed my plugs at 40,000km, even though the manu recommends it to be done at 60K. I can tell you that at 40k after changing my plugs, i noticed a nice increase in power and gas mileage. Why wait until its broken when you can keep it running at pristine condition always. It's not the right mentality with cars to wait until it's broken, especially ENGINES. Engines have to be maintained so carbon buildup doesn't happen, and that is done with good gasonline, regular plug changes, and frequent oil changes. I always recommend doing any service, sooner than what the manufacturer recommends, and i DO IT on my own cars, and i'm a mechanic for 10 years.

    and the mechanic told me that i needed to replace "the oil drain plug" because it was broken and could leak oil on the road, and he said it will cost around $260.
    The next day, i went to another mechanic for oil change,
    and he actually changed the oil without any issues, i even asked him was the drain plug broken, he said everything was fine. So i got my oil change done for $20.

I took it in for some brake work...then drove to New York, when I got there, I was having 'SURPRISE' brake problems...they had incorrectly installed a new brake line...Given the age of the car, I doubt it needed it...but did not argue, I needed to leave. My Uncle owned the work shop, I am 'savvy' (have restored more than one car)... saw what they had done when it was up on the rack. I got the receipt and came back to Goodyear...got an argument and they got no more business...and lots of negative press. I also noticed they were not in business any more...same sorta bull roar.

    Goodyear. I used to go to a local Goodyear shop in my town that my family trusted for a brake issue in which I felt a pulsating in the seat when braking and a chirping noise. They lubed behind the shoes, cleaned and adjusted the brakes, both of which were a few hundred dollars each, and the problem kept coming back. I eventually took it to a my local Honda dealership service center and they said it was because of a stuck brake cylinder and aftermarket brakes and recommended new Honda brakes. I was hesitant for a while but eventually decided that I wasn't risking forking out another couple hundred just to hope that the brakes would be fixed and let Honda put the brakes and new cylinder on. The brakes have never felt this good, and the parking brake used to go up really high, higher than it should, and now it only goes up half what it used to because of the new and right brakes. It's upsetting how Goodyear couldn't figure out what was wrong, even after hundreds of dollars of repairs that were essentially just putting a band-aid on the problem, but Honda spotted it immediately and made the brakes feel the best they've felt since I bought the car. Don't think I'll be going to Goodyear ever again, and not will my family.

    Here we go again! Never...I repeat NEVER EVER, go to Pep Boys for service. I had an alignment done there and after about 2 months, my car pulled to the right. It was under warranty so I took it back there today. The "mechanic"??? tried to tell me that I needed a wheel bearing and an outer tie rod at a cost of $561.00. After I was done laughing at him I left. So I went to Ernie's Auto 452 & Meetinghouse Rd. "Your welcome Ernie" He checked my car & it only needed a tie rod, at $76 screw PEP BOYS!

      @blargblarghonk 10 років тому +2

      I've had an alignment done with a bad wheel bearing and it lasted a couple of months and I didn't expect it to even last that long. Also a bad tie rod can cause issues to. I've seen a car with 300 miles on it come in with a bad tie rod and the guy was expecting warranty. Nope. He had a cracked rim and evidence of smashing a curb. Customer pay on that one. It's not just mechanics that try to screw the customer. It's also the customer trying to screw the mechanic. It goes both ways. Also if you buy cheap parts expect them to break faster. Your safety is not worth the extra 30 dollars of savings for one part. I am a mechanic and I'm one of the most brutally honest ones. I hate working for dealers and these little shops like pepboys. All they say is up sell, up sell, up sell and it pisses me off. But being a mechanic I take the blame for shit I never even touched or had anything to do with the original problem. So it honestly goes both ways pretty bad. As a mechanic even an honest one I'm considered the bad guy for charging someone 100 dollars to put basically a new from end on a vehicle which is pretty cheap. I mostly became a mechanic because I love cars and working on them but it's just to much of a hassle to have everyone breathing down my neck all the time to get everything done quickly.

    • @gswagsweigart
      @gswagsweigart 10 років тому

      Here's the thing, there's no bad wheel bearing. And even if it did the cost of replacing both would not come anywhere near that ridiculous price. The facts are you could take a brand new car pep boys weather wrong with it you want and we will end up saying they need other things when you don't it happens every single time every single person that goes there I wonder how many little old ladies go there member bank accounts drained simply because just don't know what's going on. Pretty much using scare tactics

    YOU ARE AWESOME! Putting those employees in their place is the best thing ever done. Same issue with Chevy Dealers - took my vehicle to replace a recalled switch. I am a mechanic by trade and decided to check the vehicle before dropping it off. The vehicle was running very smooth when I left it at the Chevy Dealership. Four hours later, I asked my wife to pick it up at the Chevy Dealership. To her surprise, the vehicle was running extremely rough, lack of power, and shaking. The Chevy Dealer told her that the car needed a full fuel line flash (what?), a tune-up (what?), timing belt (what?), spark plugs replacement (what?), and new plug wires (what?). The total estimate to get the vehicle running properly was $454.00. My wife told them that she was going to discuss it with her husband before doing any repairs. When she came home and told me what was going on, I checked the vehicle and noticed something wrong with it - a funny smell of fuel and engine misfiring. Decided to connected to the analysis equipment that I own and figure out within three minutes that two cylinders 4 & 6 were not firing at all. I told my wife no to worry. I went back to the Chevy Dealership to ask them to explain to me why such a small recalled relay replacement has caused engine issues and why such of repairs were needed to get the vehicle running correctly? At the same time, I explained to them that I was a mechanic myself and showed them the data analysis from my shop. The Chevy Dealer took the vehicle back into the garage, their mechanic FORGOT TO RECONNECT TWO FUEL LINE CORRECTLY causing the vehicle to misfire. Within 30 minutes the vehicle was brought to the front of the Chevy Dealership running smooth as a brand-new vehicle without any issues. I asked the Chevy Dealership about the rest of the required repairs to make the vehicle run correctly? They stated - it was a simple mistake. Additional repairs were not needed.

    Hello, I worked for Branch Auto Electric for about 20 years and I want to make one point about the Blown fuse. If you have a blown fuse most of the time something had to have caused this to happen like an obstruction of the movement or a short in the wiring maybe. So when I would have a customer with this problem I would tell them about this and make a point that this could happen again. - But clearly this mechanic was a crook ! Nice to see them getting caught ! LOL ( Tracing down a short that blew the fuse can be expensive!! ) Thanks!

  • @RickyIcecubes
    @RickyIcecubes 3 роки тому +1

    When I worked for Pep Boys we were told to always push for an oil change no matter what the customer brought their car in for. If they brought it in specifically for an oil change, we were told to push for the top of the line oil change. We would lie and tell them that their car was designed for top of the line synthetic oil, and lower quality oil could potentially damage their car; but we never flat out scammed anyone like this.

    They don't know that you blew the fuse on purpose. They are thinking, Why did the fuse blow?? A fuse doesn't just blow because it goes bad. Fuse blows when you have major wiring issues. Second mechanics are right. lol I had one car for 25 years and never had a blown fuse or any headlight or wiper issues. But when I bought a second car that was wrecked a few times, that one always had fuses going bad on it. I would replace the fuse and it would blow again within a month. So the fuse isn't the problem.

    • @drakeweston1031
      @drakeweston1031 7 років тому

      Y10Q you're right, a fuse is meant to show an operator that something is wrong in the wiring or a spark of voltage. The mechanic was doing what he should people just don't have anything better to do rather than bitch

    The trick is that they'll aim for a much more expensive diagnosis, even if the problem can be fixed more cheaply. I had a gauge cluster fail on an 02 honda, and they said it was an E.C.U issue. I went to my junkyard and bought a new cluster, and it works fine a year later!

    I'm glad we have a respected local mechanic for all our work. I would probably stay away from the big chains, they're gonna cast a big net all in the name of profit, with no regard for the customer.
