The sheer youthfulness, the earnestness, the sincerity and simplicity, this awkwardly confident aura about him, and the great fucking songs... This dude, man
seen this geezer live in the uk at least 15 times from 77 to 05 and still to this day cannot understand why he wasn't a lot bigger than he was despite the quirkiness, never seen anyone hold an audience like him and no one perform with the pasion and charisma. thanks for posting this
Love Jonathan. Amazing that so many do not know how he was on the forfront of the alternative and punk scene and influenced so many with his band The Moder Lovers that included the drummer of The Cars and Jerry Harrison from Tallking Heads
One of the best performers i never had the pleasure to watch live, brilliant, funny, talented. Jonathan Richman, one of the last great ones for sure. Music at its best. 10\10
Jojo on Conan? Hmm… must have been right after “There’s Something About Mary” that brief shining moment when *everybody* knew Jonathan. Even if they didn’t know his name.
I never knew about Jonathan Richman, but my girlfriend introduced me pretty recently. i am immensely grateful and deeply ashamed that i had not discovered his music years ago. better late than later i guess.
I watched him on Space Ghost Coast To Coast and he was utterly charming. So read up on him a little and have been watching UA-cam videos of him for an hour and a half! I came across these Conan O’Brien ones which was perfect. I adore Conan and so it’s made my introduction to all things Jonathan Richman really special. I looked at his UA-cam music stuff and they don’t have a lot of views. Given his music biography, I would think he’d be more listened to. Plus the comments he received on the Conan videos with Richman were extremely positive. Apparently this guy has diehard fans of his music and personality. This is an important guy because of his place in music history (late 20th Century, but still).
The most captivating performer I've ever seen. One time the audience wanted to just sit cross-legged and stare at him perform like some sort of guru, but my friend and I refused and danced our heads off. Everybody else joined in eventually.
@dcavagna Wait, you can make out the name on the headstock in the end of the video right before he starts doing the tapping on the guitar and such.... it's a Silvertone!
Completely magical, then and now; no one performs or writes with such sincerity and joy. An American treasure, and “SA” is wonderful if you haven’t heard it...
i wrote a little album for my new niece at Christmas and enjoyed the experience. I've just come across JR and..........the depth through simplicity is amazing. I'm not saying this is easy to achieve, it's a life-times work, but it somehow says so much more than a twat emoting with an acoustic guitar, eternally searching for that earth-shattering line. JR, looking forward to knowing you.
Troubadour Deluxe times a goolgeplex. Pure magic plus funny plus kinda gritty and goofy. Real and Right. Songs about what matters but w/o Hallmarky stuff.
BassAceReturns........You're so right!!! Born in an obscure little village in Scandinavia, growing up in the 70'es...... mighty luck my local recordstore owner had a very odd taste.....I love Jonathan...always will...
There are so few live performances for television which managed to capture the Jonathan live experience. This one is getting there. Jonathan played Conan's show a number of times - anyone know of any other performances?
Love this performance. He is clearly a little more nervous performing than usual, but gets through with flying colors (the audience clapping sure helped.) One of the greatest love songs ever. Sad to know he is longer happily married to this wife he sings about.
Either you love Jonathan Richman or you've never heard of him...
no inbetween!!
I just discovered him on a Velvet Underground radio show, he was a guest. What an interesting human.
Soooo truuuu.....jus now discovered Him! Better Late than Never🤩👍
Truer words have never been written.
Love that description, perfect describer
thanks for this, it's great
The sheer youthfulness, the earnestness, the sincerity and simplicity, this awkwardly confident aura about him, and the great fucking songs... This dude, man
it's funny you say that, you're right he's super youthful in his demeanor but he was already playing music for at least 20 years at this point
@@BrianKishreviewsyeah, he was 43 in this clip.
in about 4 minutes the guy becomes your friend

He never played the game.
He was, he is THE game! ;)
cause he looked faggotish
The most romantic song of all time. I watch this every time I need a pick me up.
THANK YOU JONATHAN for 25 years of true passion for life, your music is one of the best things in my life...
no matter how many times i watch this, i cant tell when the song starts
Now that's a love song.
I can totally see the influence on Mac Demarco here.

A ray of sunshine in an otherwise cold and lonely world..
This is all new to me. A friend told me about him. 40 year career and I'm just now learning about how cool this dude is.
How can someone dislike this? I simply can't understand it.
Jojo on Conan? Hmm… must have been right after “There’s Something About Mary” that brief shining moment when *everybody* knew Jonathan. Even if they didn’t know his name.
literally changed my life
i think it's an old silvertone archtop. not sure though.
jonathan reassured me
about people FOREVERMORE. SURRENDER!
Yup, that's a Silverstone, alright - love those pawnshop guitars!!!
God I love him! In just his plain ol' everyday clothes!
most generic song ever (C Am F G) but it sounds so good.
Jonathon Richman of the Modern Lovers, fuck me
He's sincere. Like you.
I like how he'll slip in references to Massachusetts or New England in some of his songs.
Some? 😂
I long for the day I do a single thing with the audacity, confidence, and competence of Jonathan Richman
Absolutely beautiful song and the most charming performance! Love Jonathan so much
I never knew about Jonathan Richman, but my girlfriend introduced me pretty recently. i am immensely grateful and deeply ashamed that i had not discovered his music years ago. better late than later i guess.
The only man that could have me at hello

I've seen this man four times, and he NEVER gets less magical. I got to meet him last time. I STILL want to know what Pendleton shirts are...

he looks like a goofy hugh jackman lol
dusting off my old vhs tapes - found "let her go into the darkness" too. have a peek.
Thank you so much for posting this! Maybe my favorite Jonathan song. Maybe one of the most romantic songs ever written.
baby's wearing blue jeans
Adorkable!
Oh he is so "meant to be funny"! That's the greatest thing about him; his sense of humour! Gotta love this guy!
I can't believe you found this...it makes me too happy for words.
@dcavagna Wait, you can make out the name on the headstock in the end of the video right before he starts doing the tapping on the guitar and such.... it's a Silvertone!

this is great the number of view jonathan is getting... wisdom is rising!
❤National treasure!❤
Jonathan is the definition of enjoying life! He gives me really good energy ❤🌈🔥
Saw him live a few months ago, and it was an utter privilege!
conan and jonathan should start a band
oh yeah... this is what its all about...
i think i have one more - will upload.
"Ipswich, Massachusetts".
A Silvertone guitar!
That is to say, that was the year Conan starting hosting.
Thank you for uploading this! I love Jonathan, he's adorable.
man alive this made my night!
Real life Joey Tribbiani

Modern lovers!!!
Holy shit it’s the singer from There’s Something about Mary!!!!

it looks like a G100 ..not positive... can't find any information on his guitars
I think it's a G100. Can't find much info, but it looks just like a G-100

@dcavagna It might be a Gretsch G-100 it looks just like one....
@wilsondylanmccartney This guy isnt suppose to be or trying to be funny!!! Songs of life!!
hey- i live in Ipswich MA! :)
He also has a lyric on another song - "Fly into the mystery....and drive your car to Beverly". From "Fly Into the Mystery".
@BassAceReturns
Very accurate statement. No one I've showed him to has disliked him.
He's the biggest influance of Herman Dune. I'm shure of that... I love im all so mutch.
You wouldn't happen to know the model?
@champipple Its an original pre-Gibson Epiphone, and its a rare treasure...
@dcavagna I'm no expert, but I'm guessing silvertone from the head.
@BassAceReturns Full agreement. 3 people would disagree, though.
@champipple oops, i didnt even look at the headstock :-P
You called it!
i love him,no rhyme or reason I JUST DO !.and this was a great album.
If you love the JR wins over the crowd, give me a thumbs up!!
Love the call-out to Ipswich.
'93. Conan was the host.
Never realized how tall Conan is damn.
Absolutely amazing
I think it's a Gretsch ...
possibly the sweetest song ever written
Does anyone know what kind of guitar that is?
I don't know why but he reminds me Hugh Jackman!
anyone know what brand acoustic that is??
we love Jonathan...sans conditions
from France
@wilsondylanmccartney Get out of here.
What kind of crap do you like?
One of my favourites
Another great song by mr. richman!
Perfectly simple and simply perfect
im jonathan ,too :D
No one else like JR!
This reminds me of Mac demarco.
Jayden Jackson me too mac does say that the modern lovers album is one of his favorites.
Mac has said before he's tried to act like Jonathan richman on stage
Joe H its just a coincidence i think its john lent from the. don't quote me on that though
+Joe H yeah it's what I thought of the first time I heard that lyric
Mac demarco takes inspiration from jonathan richmans stage performance
Massachusetts!!!
or you think he's okay.
absolute masterful Johnny
