I will teach you how to reupholster or recover outdoor patio cushions for your patio set.
If your patio set is looking tired, I will show you how to reupholster or recover outdoor patio cushions. After viewing this video, you will have the ability to fix your sagging cushions and dirty fabric too! So, what equipment will you need? This is NOT a no-sew project. This is a professional solution for your problem. It’s helpful to have a heavy duty sewing machine instead of a household version but it’s not necessary to complete this project.
If you can’t find replacement cushions for your patio set, this is your only solution!
Yes, you must remove the old fabric from your existing cushions. I know that sounds daunting to most of you but I will show you how easy it is to make patterns from your existing upholstery. A few yards of UV protected fabric will ensure that your replacement fabric will last over many yaers of use. If your cushions are sagging, I will show you a method for plumping them up. This may be your only option to keep the existing furniture that you currently have. Most patio sets have odd size and shape cushions, making it impossible to simply run to the store and purchase replacements. If you have basic sewing skills, I will show you tips and tricks for turning difficult looking areas of the project into easy and manageable pieces.
Can you really do this?
Of course! If you approach this one small step at a time, you will surprise yourself how easy this is to do. When you have successfully completed this project, you can paint your patio furniture to match the new fabric. You can really make your outdoor patio furniture look and feel brand new again!

Respect to whoever can do this work. You have valueable skills that I would prefer to just pay you for 🙂 I can't learn to do this from doing nothing of its kind already. My trade in tech means I must always be learning, I don’t have time for this level of DIY outside of my trade. Much respect to those who can!
This is 6 years old. I hope you're still creating content ♥If not for me then for the people out there to learn so others can exchange in skills or 💰
Thank you for the very kind words! I'm still doing projects like this, but have scaled way back on producing videos. I really believe that anyone can do this kind of work - with the right equipment. Even a tech-y like you! In the mean time, please check out my website www.reneeromeo.com for about 170 more DIY videos like this one. All the best and thanks again, Renee
This is an excellent video, you're prepared, confident, well spoken, clear, informative, and great at explaining details. Thank you so much Renee!!!
DMS DMS, WOW - thank YOU! You made my day with this wonderful review. I try to present things the way I'd like to be taught. I'm glad you're pleased! I know you'll do this project like a pro too. Check out my website: www.reneeromeo.com for over 150 more fun project videos. All the best, Renee
Renee, you are an excellent teacher. Obviously talking without a script, yet everything is organized and easy to understand. I've
been a 2 yr student in an upholstery class, and thus am "highly qualified" to recognize a SUPERIOR teacher when I see one ! !
LOL. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise. I really appreciate all you've taught me today.
JEan Carter, Thank you for taking the time to send me such a kind note! I truly appreciate the feedback on my style of presenting things. I'm so happy to help you along with your upholstery journey too. I love to share my experience so that I can save everyone else the trouble of learning it the hard way - like I did. So excited to find this comprehensive tutorial. I’m not reupholstering my outdoor cushions yet but I have one cushion that is very soiled. I want to remove the cover to wash it. However, it doesn’t have a zipper so my plan is to cut an opening and add Velcro to close. If you have a tutorial that addresses a project like this please let me know. I subscribed!! Thanks Renee!
Christine, Velcro is a tough one. You realy need an industrial machine to handle velcro (I think). Stitching by hand is a better way to go for you. If you use monofilament thread, no one will see the opening. Thanks for the subscribe! Much appreciated, Renee
Hello from Australia 🇦🇺 What a fabulous, comprehensive tutorial!
Tina, Oh hello!! Thank you for the kind words. I hope you have a nice array of fabrics to choose from down under! All the best with your project, Renee
Renee, you are so professional. I so enjoyed your tutorial. Excellent job. I’m pretty sure I can’t do what you just did, but my gosh, you made it look sooo easy. Thank you! I really enjoyed this!
Sue Bean, You absolutely can do this! I think it's mind over matter. I know it seems daunting but once you're in it, it's as easy as I made it look. Thank you for the very kind words! Wow! Fantastic tutorial. Thanks for talking us through the process. Can’t wait to get started on mine.
Hi Wendy, You're very welcome! No matter what configuration you have, you can use this process on any cushion. I think my cushions look better than they did when the set was new. Yours will too!! Please send a photo when you're done. I'd love to see the results. Email me at renee@reneeromeo.com. All the best, Renee
Thank you. Excellent video. It is exactly what I needed to help me with my project. I feel confident you have given the little tips that will help me be successful.
Karen Rothstein, Your cushions are going to look so nice. I'm glad I could help you with your project. I know you'll have a beautiful 'new' patio set. All the best, Renee,
I love this video!!! So helpful and informative!
Thank you for such a great video anyone could follow your instructions very easily and the set was beautiful
kittenpurrrrrrs, You're welcome! IT turned out BETTER than new (with the new stuffing). I know yours will look just a wonderful when you're done. All the best, Renee
Good video. I cover my cushion in plastic (cleaner's bag, trash bag, etc.) prior to inserting in cover. It makes it so much easier and then just tear it out before closing.
LaVerne Puller, OMG! That's brilliant. I can't believe I never ran across this wonderful hack. Thanks so much for sharing - this is the way I'll stuff ALL of my cushions and pillows from now on. Excellent. You're the best, Renee
LaVerne Puller question do you take covers off pillows wrap in plastic bags and then place back in covers to make them waterproof to the inside of the cushions ?
Gahra Wright, This is such an excellent follow-up to Laverne's tip! I wouldn't leave the plastic in place on the pillow inserts. If you leave the plastic in place, no matter how well you think you have the plastic wrapped/sealed, water ALWAYS finds its way inside the plastic. You could potentially have a mold issue on your hands. These outdoor cushions are made to get wet, dry out and repeat over and over again. Don't worry about rain and moisture ruining the interior of your outdoor cushions. Your fabric will wear out way before the cushion does. Thanks for asking a great question. I'm sure you've helped several DIY-er's out there avoid a mold problem. All the best, Renee
Gahra Wright Thank you for the question. I do not use the bag for water proofing, only to make the cushion easier to insert in the finished cover. First, there is a special foam cushioning you need to purchase that is specifically used for outdoor pillows. In addition to using the outdoor fabric, you can also purchase an iron-on plastic that is applied to your fabric pieces prior to joining them. In my area all of these things are available in the Jo-ann Fabric Store.
LaVerne Puller, Iron-on plastic? I'm going to check that out. Thanks!! Renee
You are a great teacher! Thank you for making this video.

Excellent tutorial! I have the supplies and have been trying to decide how to replace my cushion covers. Thanks for all your info and tips. Your finished product is gorgeous! 👌
Terri Speer, Your cushions will be equally gorgeous! You're very welcome. There's no need to purchase new cushions when the old ones can be reupholstered. You'll do great!

You have my DREAM machine (Sailrite). Does such a good job, with the help of you, of course!
Hi Lana, How much do I love this machine? My projects were merely mediocre before I got this beast. It's the one thing that makes me look like a pro when I'm making upholstery pieces. I never put much faith in the performance of a machine before but I promise if you get one, you'll see the difference in skill improvement right away. If you'd like to see my review on this wonderful machine, here is the link: reneeromeo.com/2018/03/01/industrial-sewing-machine-review-sailrite-heavy-duty/

@@ReneeRomeo Cool! Love it. :) Nerding out on this machine.
Wow this is a great video! Looking at getting our outdoor cushions done soon
daniel, You can absolutely do this! They'll turn out perfectly. Making a pattern out of the old stuff is key. All the best, Renee
Fantastic video. So well explained. Thank you!
Diana Lopez, Oh, thanks for watching! I really wanted to take the mystery out of recovering these cushions because it's hard to find replacements sometimes. You can reupholster any kind of outdoor cushion now. I'm glad I could help! Thanks for the nice comment, Renee
Thank you for an excellent tutorial and exactly what I needed. Can't wait to get started.
Epacris Imp, You're very welcome. I'm glad that I could help out. You're going to have a gorgeous 'new' patio set now! Who am I kidding ? Better than new.. Happy sewing, Renee
omg you are amazing !!!!!! such clear directions easy going , my friend Steve and i {tony} are going to embark on this project thank you so very much
Antonio, Thank you for the very kind words!! You'll be so successful doing this too. The secret is in the pattern that you make from the previous cushion. Take your time with that and it will be perfect. All the best, Renee

Omg I cannot believe you took the time to answer me again thank you
Thank you so much!! Great explanation and video!

Thanks so much for the tutorial and the detailed info. Very easy to follow you, Saludos from Puerto Rico. Will try this!
Vida Mora Puerto Rico, You're very welcome and thanks for watching! I try to show projects exactly how I would like to learn them. I can't wait to hear how yours turned out. Puerto Rico is on my 'bucket list'. It was my Grandmother's favorite place! All the best with your sewing project, Renee
Thank you for this amazing video. I honestly think I can do this. I paid 40 per cushion last year and they’re fading
Hi Sherry, That's exactly why I recovered my own. At that price we'd be better off just purchasing a whole new set. And... what sense does that make? I'm not sure how manufacturers come up with their pricing, honestly. Fortunately, it's not hard to reproduce like-new looking cushions. It just takes a little bit of patience and you'll have beautiful "new" cushions again. Thank you for taking the time to send such a nice note. All the best with your project, Renee
You did a fantastic job. You helped me so much.
t! I'm glad I could help, Now you can re-crate any shape and size cushion cover that you have. I bet your cushions look fantastic too! Thanks for the nice comment, Renee
Oh wow! You did a wonderful job! I'll have to come back to this when I'm ready to do my project. Thanks!
Hi Laurie, Thanks so much for watching and you are welcome! I'm trying to get great how-to content out there and your feedback is so valuable to me. When you are ready to tackle this project, please post pictures of your before and after. we would all love to see your results. Happy Sewing! Renee
I like to see before and after pics too! I'll do that..it depends if I get a used set with old cushions or buy a new set

Wow, you timed this video just for me 🤗 . I have my supplies and now feel very confident to get started on my project. So on a domestic sewing machine ( higher end model) I will use my walking foot with appropriate needle and thread, what stitch length do you recommend maybe a 5mm? Thank you so much. Val🇨🇦
Val Clements How exciting! Yes, I think 5mm would be fine for this project. It's going to look so nice and professional - you're going to love your patio all over again! Glad I could be of assistance, Renee
Thank you so much Renee!
Hi Things I Wonder, Great name! You're very welcome. I know you'll do a great job on your cushions too. Take it one step at a time and you won't get overwhelmed. All the best, Renee
Fabric colors are uplifting and gorgeous. What kind of foam did you use in between the older foam? Thank you
Hi Lina, I agree! It's so festive. I used an outdoor fan that is more fibrous and allows for good drainage in case the cushions get wet. It gives a more firm feel to the cushions. You should be able to find outdoor foam at your local fabric store - available in packages near the pillow form area. All the best, Renee
hello I have subscribed to your channel and I hope it and the nice comments encourage you to film more sewing videos 😀👍
Nice instructions!
Thank you Sherri! I hope you try this. It saved my outdoor set from the donation truck. All the best, Renee
Beautiful. Thanks for the video
Thank you Wendy! Your cushions will turn out great too! Renee
@@ReneeRomeo you have realy squeezed the cushions flat by sitting on the cushions the looked like you jumped and trampled the cushions
What do i have to do to become 1 of the cushions you sit on ?
@@kris3555 It's just the garbage that looked great when I bought it. Since the overhaul, it looks just as good as it did when I refurbished it. The right supplies make the project my friend. All the best, Renee

awesome job.. i want to do a project like this but, im afraid i will not look professional like yours.. well done amiga.
Thank you. If you try, please post a picture!
I have a regular house sewing machine can i still use a polyester thread.? Because it looks like a can’t it gets too loose. Thanks
Celina aceves, Absolutely! Polyester thread comes in varying sizes from 30 (regular sewing machine) to over 500 (industrial sewing machine). I used a 69 in my walking foot machine for this project. So, you can only use a 30 in a home sewing machine. The thing that makes my 69 special is that it has UV resistance for outdoors and won't deteriorate as quickly as untreated polyester. If you use the 30 without UV resistance, just make sure that you are taking the cushions indoors after every use, otherwise you risk early deterioration of the seams. I hope this helps. All the best with your project, Renee
hello very nice lady merry Christmas very beautiful sewing skills please kindly film some more sewing videos please kindly let me know OK?thank you very much and have a beautiful day 😊
Frank, Thank you so much! I haven't filmed sewing videos lately but if you hit the subscribe button, you'll be the first to know when it happens. All the best and Merry Christmas, Renee
I have the exact same furniture. I used to buy the replacement cushions on line via a company that no longer makes them (Garden Winds). I wish I had the talent, machinery you do. If anyone knows some where to buy the cushions/covers please let me know.
T H, I love this cozy set. I think the original fabric wasn't very good quality to begin with. That's one thing you can control when you do it yourself. It's never too late to invest in a nice sewing machine. You'll use it for many more projects too. All the best with your cushion replacement, Renee
I have a brother sewing machine. I am using extra strong upholstery thread with an 18 size needle. What tension should I be at?
Elizabeth, This is really trial and error every time. Each machine, need and fabric situation make it different every time. My Brother sewing machine doesn't take heavy duty upholstery thread so I wouldn't be the person to ask. Just take your time with a few samples. All the best, Renee
Your cushions turned out gorgeous. I've been looking at fabric it's better priced than cushions you buy. I wouldn't have thought of using the special thread and I sew. I was just wondering what kind of needle do you use in your machine I'm sure it's industrial.
Hi Winwin Myfriend, Thank you for the kind words! This is definitely the way to go because even the new cushions you purchase may not fit perfectly in your existing furniture. They'll be better made too. My machine is industrial and you can watch a video for it here:
reneeromeo.com/2018/03/01/industrial-sewing-machine-review-sailrite-heavy-duty/
If you do a lot of Home Dec projects, this is a good thing to have in your sewing room - not necessary for this project though. In my industrial machine, I use a size 16 needle for this project but with a home machine, I would go with a 90 (or jeans) size needle. It can get quite thick when you sew over the cording edges. It'll look great! All the best with your project, Renee
@@ReneeRomeo thank you so much.
What foot /needle are you using on your Sailrite? I have the same machine and have the most difficult time sewing lighter fabrics!
Heaven's Daughter, In the manual it addresses that issue. You will need to lighten the pressure on the foot and also change out your needle to accommodate the lighter fabric. It can be done but honestly, this machine isn't really geared up for lightweight fabrics. You will have to take some extra time to adjust it properly. In my case, I have my Brother home sewing machine set up right next to the Sailrite so that I can jump from one to the other during a project. It's more convenient that having to adjust the Sailrite that dramatically. If this is your only machine, then refer to the fabric/needle chart in the manual and keep testing the stitch until you get it just right. All the best, Renee
How do you remove wrinkles from outdoor fabric. I have one large piece that need to be city with the width of the fabric open, therefore there is the crease of the fabric
Hi Mary, I would try placing a damp towel over the crease and then a steam iron over the top of that. It should work really well. Renee
For 3 inch thick foam patio chair seat cushions? What density foam should I get?
Hi Ted, If you can't find the outdoor type foam in 3 inches, you will have to stack layers to get to the 3 inches that you're looking for. If it's a covered area, you can get away with the blue foam but if it's exposed to rain, you really need the outdoor foam. Best wishes with your project, Renee
Thank you I am able to get 3 inch outdoor foam. I don’t think I worded my question properly I was looking at is a medium density. Or should I go with something as firmer than that.
@Ted Silverman OH, sorry for the misunderstanding. I think it's a combination of personal preference and what type of frame your furniture has. The more solid the frame, the softer you can go. I hope this helps!
Thank you!

What kind of fabric you used?
Hi Nancy, I used outdoor fabric (Sunbrella type). I got mine at Joanne Fabrics. It's not Sunbrella brand but they do carry it in stock and it's cheaper than Sunbrella. I hope you can find it near you. All the best, Renee
Wow in the beginning the cushions looked like they where trampled on by elephants
after the cushions looked like new again
This project still looks fantastic. The stuffing of the cushions was critical for great results. All the best with your project, Renee
What is the brand of this patio set
Hi Al Bu, I'm sorry that I don't remember but I got it at Walmart if that helps. It's been a good many years since I purchased it. Thanks for asking, Renee
hello very nice young lady yes you do have some fantastic sewing skills please kindly film how to sew a pillow closed using your beautiful industrial sewing machine please kindly let me know OK?thank you very much 😊
What kind of machine is being used for this?
rogodog1, This is a Sailrite sewing machine. I actually have a product review of this in my 'Reviews' playlist here on UA-cam and on my website: www.reneeromeo.com. I love this machine and you will too! I can answer any questions you have about it. Thanks for asking, Renee
Did you make the chalkboard? Where is it from?
Hi Pamela, I made the chalk board. It's nothing more than a 4 x 8 sheet of painted 1/8" MDF (or Luan). I cut it to the correct dimensions and then attached 1 x 2" trim all along the edges with screws. The chalk board paint really works! Thanks for asking about it - it's one of the most valuable tools in my sewing room! All the best, Renee
@@ReneeRomeo Thank you! I love old fashioned chalkboards but can only find cheap imitations that are hard to write on. This is great.
@@ThePanamma Anytime and yes - this is so easy to write on.
Hi,, do you have a vedio doing a bull nose cushion I would love to see it.. Thank you
Eve, Do you have a picture of the cushion? I would love to see it. The method that I used on the pillow backs would probably work best for a bull nose shape. I think you just need to eliminate the piping cord and you're good to go. If not, I will add that to my list of videos for you! Renee
Wow.
Starting out three video with rain in the background? Oh no! oh no! Mop oh no no no no no! Very hard to listen to.
Hi petunia27, Sometimes you've got to go with the flow - even if it is rain! It takes a long while to set up a shot so I decided to wing it and press on. Mother Nature waits for no one. The rest of the video makes up for it, I think. Thanks for the feedback, Renee
