How to Make a Basic Cushion | 1 Piece Box Cushion | 30 Minute Cushion
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лип 2024
- For this chair I wanted to make a really basic cushion for the back rest of the seat. This 1 piece box cushion fit the bill perfectly. The best description of this style is a knife edge cushion (but I really could not find anywhere on the internet that had this exact style that I came up with)
I am naming it the basic cushion, because you only need to cut one piece of fabric to make it. And here's how you can make your own.

What a great tutorial! I was watching 30 minute, 40 minute videos on how to do this wrap around miter corners, all day and got such unclear instructions. This girl did a clear, perfectly understandable tutorial in 7 minutes. Thank you so much!!!
You are so welcome!💚😌
Couldn't have said it better myself!!!
2nd this! This was surprisingly more helpful! Thank you so much !
"Such a great tutorial - I had been watching a few others that just confused me. I did a trial run and made 1 cover in about 45 minutes start to finish. Gave me the confidence to order the fabric to make a whole set. Thank you
I’m not the only person to be completely amazed how easy that tutorial was to understand and execute. WOW I was so intimidated to start my cushion project but now I’m excited!!
Agreed! I was like....what!?
Newly Retired and can enjoy sewing again. I just need to brush up on specialty things. This was perfect. Short, sweet but Very Clear!!! My cushions came out great!! Thanks so much.
I am brand new to sewing and I followed this tutorial and made my first ever chair cushion out of a tempurpedic mattress topper!!! On my first attempt at 10:30 pm at night
It's been years since I covered cushions. So glad you posted this to UA-cam. It was extremely helpful and the cushions look great!
I'm so glad!
By far, the best tutorial I have seen! Thank you
That was EXACTLY what I needed!!
Wonderful, clear instructions! Thanks so much.
Excellent! You make the gussets so easy to do - compared to others that complicate matters. THANKS!
I agree, a really good tutorial and I feel very prepared now - thank you
You are so good st tutorials! you explain things so thoroughly yet concisely
CAUTION!!
Use the *updated* written instructions when measuring and cutting the gussets, especially for thicker cushions, not the ones presented here.
This video is fantastic just as everyone says, but we had to adjust our cushion to be 1/2" taller since we cut the gussets using the video instructions. This also made the resulting cushions narrower than we'd like so they don't sit perfectly in the chairs. We're still happy with them but wish we hadn't taken the video at face value!
Cut gusset at half the cushion height?
where are the written instuctions?

Thank you! Thank you! I just made my cushion following this step by step. I can't believe how easy it was
I live that wooden thread holder/decoration in the back! That's a really great idea 🙂

Awesome tutorial! Appreciate you posting this!
This is a great video! Easy to follow, and less than 10 minutes long. This project has been on my to do list, and now my old cushions are so worn out, I have to do this this weekend. Thank You!
This is exactly what I needed. I need to sew cushions for the back of my couch. Just plan to sew 3 regular cushions with no overhang for the armrest cushions. I’ve been trying to decide how I want to make these. Your tutorial is absolutely perfect! Love the way you added the zipper - genius. Will be looking for some double sided fabric soon. Thank you for the detailed tutorial. Love everything about it. Great job. New subscriber to your channel.
Thanks Pam! We are so happy we could help with your projects!
Wow, that's the most straightforward guide I've found! Thanks
Extrordinery tutorial it thought me the perfect sewing I was searching this kind of video from 1 hr thanks a lot.
Perfect instructions! Successfully made 12 pillows with zippers.
Ah. Do simple. Thanks. Gold star for teaching. ❤
Yours is the easiest way to make a box cushion. It was straightforward video and easy to understand. Thanks.
You are so welcome!
Great tutorial. So easy to follow.
Brilliant tutorial !!!
I have just made my first cushion cover, I followed everything but actually missed the zipper out and it has worked out really well. My fabric is curtain fabric so didn't want to waste a zipper as the sofa's are reclaimed and would add more cost to my project but it has worked well. I might just go in and reinforce a little by hand or sew closed if I can be bothered. Thank you I have 2 more to do and then I have re-upholsterd a sofa and chair for £70 with Orla Kiely fabric !!
Great work! You totally don't need to add the zipper if you don't want one! I have a hand stitch that will work really well to close up that edge, you can find the tutorial here - ua-cam.com/video/WbE5hXt27uU/v-deo.html
Very clear instructions thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
This worked like a dream. First time I've made a box cushion and I measured twice and cut once after very careful thought. It has come out just as explained and looks amazing. Thanks.

You got this! Best of luck with your cushions.
Very nice, clear instructions... i double stitch for durability , also i serge the fabric ends to take care of the fraying of the upholstery fabric,
This are really great tips! If you have a serger, I really recommend doing that! And I have never tried double stitching on something like a cushion, does it make the seams bulky? I would love to give this a try!
I only started a couple of weeks ago and your way of sewing zippers is awesome :D
Muy bien explicado
Best tutorial!!

Oh my gosh! I've been stuck at beginner level sewing for I'm not going to admit how many years because a zipper has always been a mystery to me.I could never decipher written instructions. I'm so embarrassed to realize just how un-intimidating they have been all this time. Thank you!!!!

Wow well explained and understood sister,⭐⭐⭐
Thanks for watching☺
Top merci 🙏
Loved the tutorial but confused about the gusset measurements. I understand that you use half the thickness of the foam and add 1/2” for seam EXCEPT for the fold. The. It’s just 1/2 the thickness of the foam, right? Why were your fold gussets 1 and 1:2 inches by 2 inches?
Also the fold has to cover the wide part of the seat cushion - did I miss that somewhere for fabric measurement? Thank you!!!
Thank you for sharing this easy method of sewing box cushion.
You are so welcome!😊
I am enjoying following your instruction! Questions. Are you sewing 1/2 inch seam allowance all the way around. I am a quilter and 1/4 is the standard. Also, when using your cushion measurements are you using the original foam cushion measurements or the new measurements after adhering the batting? Also your batting looks like it has some type of outside coating instead of the batting I am use to using for quilting? Thanks for your help!
thank you!!! slay
Salam kenal dari indonesia,,terimakashi sudah berbagi tips nya
Wonderful! Clearly and skillfully presented. This is going to save me hours of monkey business. Thank you so much!
Many thanks for this tuto! Still have some questions : if my foam is 10 cm height so my top gussets will be 6,2 cm and the folded side gussets will be 5cm, is that correct? Do you think it’s possible to add piping all around the piece?
Thanks from France (that’s why using cm) for your help and this video !
This was excellent. Thank you! Would love one without a zipper, like a envelope?!?
What type of fabric is that? Beautiful ❤️
Super
Thanks!
Hi thanks for your awesome video! Can you show me a video where the top of the pillow is with a curve instead of straight? Thank you
Thanks for sharing this cushion video. I am going to try to make one using this method I have similar videos, and they do NOT add 1/2" to the gussets, can you share why you add the extra 1/2" please?
Butiful 👍👍👍
This is an amazing video. I am having a problem getting the gussets to match up and the the cornered stick up a little. Any thoughts?
👏👏👏👏👏
Love this tutorial! When you sew the gussets do you also use a 1/2" seam allowance?
I did and it worked ok
Very nice 👍..
Mrs asim from pakistan
I covered a chair with the same fabric!!! 😊😊😊 But I used the other side.
I LOVE the other side of the fabric. They are both so beautiful.
If I’m making a rectangle cushion cover, 36x12.5..would you put the zipper on the short end?
Thanks for the great tutorial! I have a couple of questions. Do you use temporary basting adhesive for the batting, and is it reasonable to use a cotton blend batting instead of the Dacron? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
Yes, you can definitely use cotton batting instead! We used a more permanent spray adhesive, but a temporary would work for this as well.
One thing missing are ties - Do you have a tutorial for these if you are putting them in chairs? Agree, this video was very well put together. Are all of your seam allowances 1/2 inches?
Excellent video!
This may sound kind of like a of weird request, but, flight sim pilots need seat cushions that have a "square notch" cut-out at the front of the cushion that is 110 mm x 110mm. This allows us to have the flight joystick being placed in between our legs. Real planes have the joystick center mounted between their legs. How would we go about cutting and sewing this square notch? If you Google an F/A-18C cockpit you will see what I mean about the notch for the joystick. Thank you!
After pressing the basted seam for the zipper, how do you sew the zipper on (without sewing through the middle) since you've now created a tube? Gracias
Do you need to wrap the foam in padding? Or can you just do the fabric?
