I just hung mine upside down on the rod using the hem as the rod pocket (rather than buying a new rod) and sewed a new hem. The grommets actually provided a little bit of weight to improve the "hang" of the material.
This is also very clever!
That’s a great idea!!!
Genius!
That's interesting how you left the grommets to weight the curtains. I used to have lace curtains from Germany that had built in weights, something unheard of before, but I absolutely loved those curtains.
!!! I did the same thing!!! Great minds...lol
I like grommet curtains and I don't think they are ugly, but I like to learn things that I can use on other applications. To each their own.
I like them too, and feel they're easier to open and close!
I had no idea grommet top curtains were so out of style. I have them in my home and I actually really like them. Mine slide easily. Of course I also have blinds so my curtains are mostly decorative. But this is a beautiful I love the reverse box pleat.
I don’t think it’s really out of style as much as a personal preference. 😊
I’m always more concerned with the pattern or material.
Agree with @wiggy3333 they are only out of style for me. If you like them , then bu all means use them! And yes if you have blinds too then grommets top panels are easy and affordable.
I have them and I love them. Easy peasy to open and close them
I love how easy it is to open and close my curtains with the grommets. I also have heavy white wood blinds so a thick white decorative rod with the curtains looks really nice.
If that the only hard thing I had to open and close my curtains wow I would be so lucky
I see so many grommet curtains at thrift stores but always pass them over because I don’t like the style, this is genius!
I know , me too!!!! I’m excited about this hack.
Yes, I was thinking about looking for these at thrift stores:)
I agree, I’m even considering removing the grommets, sewing the pleats and adding those ring clips to the back so I can hang them on pre-existing curtain rods. I just love this inverted pleat look
I have never heard or experienced my grommet top curtains having issues like this. I grew up with traditional curtains and have grown to love my grommet top curtains. Style is what you like. No one else matters when it's your own house but more power to you for finding a sewing project to make you happy.
Right! I like mine.
I agree that I would never go back to these little pins. Also most of the grommet curtains are on hung on very stylish rods. I won't comment on those white rods since I don't feel it's right to call them ugly which is just an opinion.. Decorating is personal & if we all always followed others, our homes would be boring. The idea of the transformation is clever & some obviously approve, but no need to judge others.
I must be old 😂 .... while you're very talented figuring that out, I never want to go back to those curtains with pins again lol. Had them my entire life with the cord you would pull to open and close them. Cool idea with the hospital rod though!
I understand Sue. I think pinch pleated drapery with traversing rods were standard back in the day.
agreed, never want to go back to those pins! great idea for some, wont work for me.
@@patnader9952 to each his….variety makes the world go around.
Agreed. I lived with them for years.
I love the pinch-pleated draperies from days gone by. Grandma made them for her windows and some of our windows.
Mimzy, I love the way you reworked my old grommet drapes! The ease in which I can open and close them now is a pleasure. I'm so blessed to have such a talented sister!❤
Thanks Katy!!!! I’m so happy that this worked out so nicely!!!
@@katherinemorgan395 appreciate you allowing her to use your curtains to show us
Very clever! I don’t mean to be negative but if I don’t want that rod to show do I just add the hook a bit lower on the seam?
@@gloriayearian6145 yes! Absolutely right!
@@gloriayearian6145Yes! And if the floor length isn’t then correct, you can drop the track a bit lower to accommodate
I didn't like grommet-top panels when they were "in style," but that's all i could afford for my 9' front windows. This is a wonderful solution, thank you.
Same here!!!
Brilliant! So glad I found you.
To those who like them, they are not "out of style:. Personal preference.
Grommet curtains always looked like glorified shower curtains to me, so the grommet look just never was appealing. This lovely update is an excellent idea! Pleated drapes are always a classic and versatile look. There are a lot of grommeted curtains available in quality fabrics at resale shops, so it is time to go SHOPPING for pre-owned grommet curtains - yeehaa!!!!! 💸 😄
Yes! You’re right! They are shower curtain-esque. And you’re right, I always see plenty of grommet top drapes at the thrift .
Yes. Grommet tops look skimpy - whether in a shower or in a great room window. This is an upgrade! It adds fullness and depth.
@@mcmccoy1184 yeeeesssssss!
@@mcmccoy1184 you know what your talking about!
Okay I’m not sure what the problem with grommet curtains!!! Mine was not cheap, and the rings match my curtain rods! And I have no issues with them or opening them everyday morning or night!
What you are showing is from the 60s! I remember the rods and the curtain pins in my Granny’s house! I don’t like those rods they look very cheap!!
@@tammywelsh1532 I'm glad you love your grommet curtains! For me, I needed a solution that Mimzy fixed. The grommets had rubbed the finish off the rod over many years of using grommet style curtains. It became tedious closing them at night. Also, the pins in the back are not visible. Just a nice reuse of my drapes. Thanks for watching and commenting on my sister's video!
If grommets work for you , then there is no problem Tammy. Thanks for commenting.
Exactly! Those pleated drapes would be considered outdated, so I couldn't understand why she said grommets are outdated. I couldn't understand too why she made it appear that grommets were difficult to slide along the rods. That's just not true. To each his own in style as in pretty much a lot of things.
@@donnamattis7749 My rods were wood with a painted finish. The finish had rubbed off from years of grommet curtains going back and forth over the rod leaving it rough and hard to slide. I had grommet curtains for almost 30yrs in these windows so indeed, they had become 'dated' to me. But like you said, to each his own.
I never liked those curtains on a track and much less the way they are fixed to the wall or ceiling. I had all kinds of curtains headers in my life and anything that rolls on the rod with ease and without much hardware is a winner for me.
I LOVE this hack! So much nicer, neater and classic looking than the grommets!
Thank you!!! I agree !
Just started watching the video...the grommets will make cute little wreaths. Use the tiny greenery pieces sold at Christmas in packets of 10 or 12 twelve for $1.25. Wrap around metal pieces and add tiny Christmas ornaments and bows and use as package decorations!
great idea.
Excellent idea! As soon as I saw her chucking the grommets as waste I thought “WAIT! Those can be used for *something* else!” I’m a huge proponent of reusing before tossing.
Like fashion, everything comes back into “style”. Remember this style from “youth”.
FACTS!
Beautiful solution! So tired of seeing beautiful fabric panels ruined by ugly grommets. I keep hoping the trend will just stop. Pleeease...
Also, if you install the hooks lower, the top of the curtain will cover the rod which in my opinion is just as unattractive as the grommets. They will also more resemble traditional pinch pleat drapes. Well done tutorial. 😊
Those drapery hooks are old fashioned, they go way back!
Yes, they do go way way back! I’ll have research how far back, now I’m curious. But everything/style is cyclical, things come and go. But ALSO I’d consider my style old fashion/granny chic , so the drapery hooks are fitting. 😁
@@MimzyandCompany They go back to the 20's but made popular in the 50's.
@@vaderladyl okay! Good to know.
Pinch pleated drapes can still be hung from a decorative rod on rings. They actually look very high end. And are seen in English or French country homes.
That's thinking outside the box pleat!!🤣🤣 ❤from KS
That’s very punny Marcia!😝
Wow!! You answered my prayers!! I found some curtains, at a good price and theyre sooo beautiful. I just renovated my sunroom into a 4 season room. We have worked so hard and Ive seatched for the perfect curtains but they had grommets 🫤 So I will definitely do this. Thank you!!! ❤
Yay! That sounds nice…I wanna do the same with my screened porch.
I've often thought grommets let in too much light for light-blocking curtains. Now I know how to fix that! Thank you!
I never even thought of that! Your right grommet top blackout drapes are kinda useless. This hack will for solve that!
@MimzyandCompany I have blackout curtains with grommets. I also have a special rod that wraps around the window and the rod is closer to the wall than my previous rod. As someone who works midnights, it works great. My window is a North-facing window though.
My sewing room window faces south and has the same set-up. Very little light comes in.
I think it's all in the rod you have.
@@catty2chatty that sounds good. As long as they work, and you like the way they look….all is well. ❤️
Yesss I was just thinking that myself
@@catty2chattyConsider for a minute though how much less light will be let through via the top of the curtains and the rod. With this straighter, flatter hang, rather than the waved curved style, it will naturally let in less light through the space from the rod and the wall. I do love the idea of the curved rod to alleviate the side light sneaking through, but this pleat style will also help with the top sunlight escape as well
Love this idea. Never did like grommets! Also I like ❤that your sewing space is real. We can tell that you do real everyday sewing!
omg...my background in my videos is always such a mess because YES I do sew everyday. I always intend to clean up my space before recording, but if i did that I'd never get to the recording. Thanks for commenting.
What a grand idea! I’ve been postponing changing my drapes because they’re so expensive, but now I can do this! 🙌
Oh good! Thanks. I’m glad this helped.
Nice! Thanks so much for sharing this! Now, I personally am partial to the clip rings. But that's because I've been using them to 'hand pleat' & hang bleached drop cloth with lace on medium rods in my cottage, because I despise all my available older drapes with grommets as well as what's available in stores that are STILL peddling the grommets, which just aren't for me. This is a fantastic option for those with the track, and I believe it will work fabulous with my clip rings on my farmhouse rods! I'm excited to get started now! I have enough to swap out seasonally once I pull grommets and stitch the box pleats! 🙂
Yes, I was wondering about using the clip rings with these!
@@janiewilliams5803 I did 8 sets yesterday and found I was able to hang them with the clip low to hide the ring if I like or clip right at the top behind the pleat and show the ring allowing that extra length (which is my favorite look) and they glide beautifully either way.
Thank you so much. I just bought 4 lg panels of heavy curtains with of course stupid , ugly grommets 😂😂..love tour sense of humor. So l did the removal and viola. Perfect..now l wont wait wks. after buying curtains to put up. They look beautiful. Easy Peasy. T.Y. Again and have a beautiful day…hugs from Ontario , Canada. 🤗🍁🇨🇦
Thanks for Commenting Sheryll! I hope this works as easily for you too!
First off, you must take that very smart niece to lunch. What a great idea. Thanks for sharing with us, it can be used for any window update on a bugdet too.
Yes!!! You’re right Vicki! I do need to take her to lunch. I’m sure I would have even accomplished this task had she not pulled out those grommets. I would prob still be prying them out.🤣
Wow, great idea….. I’ve found drapes I like but didn’t buy b/c of grommets
Bravo & thank you
Yeah. I wish I would’ve thought of this sooner.
I will be so happy when grommet curtains go out. It really is about all you can buy unless you buy online. I find them ugly. This is such a great idea!
This is PERFECT! I just got beautiful curtains that unfortunately have grommets. Was planning to sew a strip of fabric over the grommets then add pleat tape to the other end. This is SO MUCH EASIER! Thank you!!!
Oh wow looks great! I don't know why we ever went for those grommets. I bet they look beautiful now.
They do! Thanks!
I hate grommet panels too. I used to cut the header off but this is brilliant!
Thanks! Cutting the header off is good too if you can live with the shorter length.
The white track looks sooooo tacky and cheap. I would raise the curtains up to cover it.
I could, but I’d need to take out the bottom hem in order to lengthen them.
I never seen the track showing, it is meant to be covered by the curtain header.
@@vaderladyl that’s a traversing rod that should be covered.
What a great revamping of a product most people would have thought had to be replaced. I couldn't afford to replace that many panels, but I know that I am capable of revamping. Thank you for sharing. You're an inspiration. 😊
Thanks! Definitely more affordable than replacing.
Such a great idea. I’m going to do this in my dressing room! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Good to hear.
Genius! I had just purchased some grommet drape panels on sale. I was going to cut off the grommet header and create a new header with back tabs. I was also going to rework my traverse rod (so I could slide the panels). This plan will save me reworking my traverse rod and from having shorter drapes. I also love box pleat panels (always have.) This is a perfect solution for me.
Thanks!
That’s awesome! So glad this helped!
Option for sliding drapery over rod joint--EZY glide tape
All you have to do is apply the tape where the rod takes the weight of your curtains. You can do this without even removing the rod from its position. The entire DIY could take less than 5 minutes. Just make sure you have enough space between your curtain rod and curtain rings (or grommets) to accommodate the thickness of the tape - with a little extra clearance for sliding. Tape is invisible. Just a thought to try, especially if you like the grommet look or have the "hump" rod issue.
Man, I love this hack! I like that is an option to make draperies that you like to easily make them look different. Sometimes a different style is all that you need to do to feel as if you have new drapery! Thanks so much for sharing.
Wow! I’ve never heard of this tape! Really great to know!!!! Thank you so much! I’ll definitely look into it!
Brilliant! Really not over complicated.
Thanks! Glad I found you!
Thank you, yes…very simple.
What a GREAT Tutorial and fun to watch. Some day Grommets will be out of style and if the fabric is not too badly worn, this is a great change. I still have a bunch of those little hooks from the 1980's...LOL Handy little "tools of the trade" so to speak. Thank you...I subscribed.
Thank you!
u did that. I was just saying I was gonna cut mine off. but now I don't have to shorten the length. YAAYY. THANKS
Yeeeesss! So glad you found this before cutting! Thanks for commenting!
This was absolutely brilliant!
You did such a great job and they turned out beautifully.
Yes, think so too. I have both styles in my home.
Genius! You always figure out the best hacks! Will absolutely be using this in my home decor from now on.
Called eyelet or ring top curtains in the UK ! People have stopped using the white tracks and hooks for years here and switched to wooden and metal poles. Another reason pinch pleat curtains went out of fashion because they generally require more fabric to make the fullness, plus dirt and dust accumulates in the folds at the top. You only see them in hotels now, dressing large windows.
@@blondeenigma3882 I have used the grommet curtains for so many years that I appreciate seeing something different. Also, I needed a solution for my problem and Mimzy did just that! Thanks for watching and commenting on my sister's video!
There are many rod solutions today that you can have a pinch pleat panel and use a nice decorative rod. 😊
The track system was never a thing here in the states but rather more of a necessity use for specific situations. So the track has not gone in or out of style here. I personally discovered them when I needed a bracket-less option due to a solid wall of windows with no wall space . The track became my only option and I learned it works amazingly for so many other situations as well. Wish I would have discovered it sooner.
Wood and metal rods with obstructive brackets have limitations. Sometimes those aren’t a big deal and other times it is a deal breaker.
As for the box pleat taking up more material, it actually does not. Measure it out for yourself and you’ll see. Don’t take my or anyone else’s word for it.
You have just saved me a fortune in new curtains. HUGE thanks again Mimzy ♥
Omg,Love this.I finally found curtins on line that would be perfect for the bedroom I'm redecorating. But they had those large grommets that I do not like, first I thought I would just cut that top part off and sew it to use a regular rod.But after watching your video I like your idea much better. Thank you so much for sharing your video.👍🙂
Yay! That’s fantastic.
Grommets or no grommets, I love this look. I have large picture windows and was just about to do some modifications to my back tab curtains and add wave tape to them so I could use them properly with my IKEA curtain track. But I love the look of your curtain pleat so much better. It’s really modern looking and I like the ability to close my curtains and have them be flat with just the pleat. So nice.
I think I’ll be clipping off those back tabs and doing this inverted pleat sew method instead. I love that look.
Thanks! It’s very neat and tidy looking and you drapes will stay that way when using them with stitches pleat.
yes! that's exactly right.
Instead of drapery hooks add a false hem and put the poke through each drapery o. Which it would slide as the drapes are then equally sized and would hang seamlessly love your idea it is brilliant
Very clever and looks great!
I have same sewing machine as you. I got mine brand new in 1986…before you were born probably! lol Used it constantly all these years!
I LOVE this sewing machine! There's nothing better! I have it on my list to make a sewing machine recommendation video. HaHa...thanks for that compliment...I'm about to be 52. 😁
Some grommets snap together and after they are pulled off the drapes, can be gently pried apart. I have used them to attach a tote bag under the seat of a rollator (a type of walker). I folded the top of the lightweight canvas tote over to make a two layer thick band and attach the grommets- 4 were sufficient. I used grosgrain ribbon to tie through the holes and to the frame under the seat. It can easily be removed to launder. I’ve seen patterns to sew purses and bags with grommets at the top for either a handle or straps going through the grommets. Grommets may be out of style for interior design but they have many other uses. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻. I could probably think of dozens more.
yes! wow! that's very creative!
Love it! Being able to rework something to change the style takes a special kind of brilliant resourceful and creative thinking! I love the content you create, it is unique and so helpful. This isn't a grommet vs pleats deal, it's a "how can I change these without trashing them?"
Yes!!!! You’re so right Audrie! We used what we had but made it more efficient, and beautiful imo.
For a really high end look, calculate the depth of the sewn pleat to make sure the curtains are the perfect width when pulled shut. You want them to be flat but not stretched at the top when closed. This shows off the style nicely without excess fullness.
Yes! Exactly right!
Thanks for sharing this idea!!
You’re welcome. Thanks for commenting!
I love grommet panels. Have them in every room.
Genius idea. Wow!
FINALLY!! I've ALWAYS hated grommet curtains. They look like shower curtains. Tho I wouldn't even shame my shower with a grommet curtain.
I agree! They are not only ugly, and need to die in a fire, but announce that you could care less, and happy to have Grandma's grommet curtain castoffs in your 1st apt. Anything to cover vomitrocious vertical blinds. Right?
She even showed you a cool TP roll trick when she dropped off that 24 roll pack, and pallet of ramon noodles, from her COSTCO run. 😂
Hilarious. I’m with you, and shocked how many love the grommets.
I love grommet topped drapes. All of mine slide very easily.
That’s wonderful . Glad to hear.
Absolutely genius!! Can’t wait to try this in my nursery
Excellent! So glad this helped!
Oh WOW! I needed this, thank you!!
Great! Glad you found it!
I don't mind grommet curtains but I love tab back. I do love the design the back pleats created. I would've used curtains rings instead of curtains hooks because in my opinion that look is outdated. Many thanks for sharing this video.
Yes, I do love rings too. But the easy open was the number one requirement.
This is brilliant!
this is just the hack i was looking for. BRILLIANT!
Oh good! Glad it helped.
Ingenius idea 😊 couple of things I thought off ..... if you flattened the box pleat at the back you could then run a wide tape across the back that would take a gather hook .... of course it would cost more but it would be a bit more sturdier than pin hooks . You can follow the original sewing lines .... The higher the hook part the shorter the curtain goes too .... grommets should only put on a metal track too but I hate the way mine catches on the extendable part . The beauty of tracks too is that you can return your curtains to the wall and cut light out in the bedrooms if they are a face fix . Anyway , love this idea❤
Yes! You’re right about the tape! That’s a great idea. And you sound like you have a lot of experience with drapery.
@@MimzyandCompany yes , been in curtains and blinds all my working life..... I do love your idea , they look so much nicer ....
Then you can use those grommets for the dress and shirt hack. When you want to make a dress or shirt tighter, place the grommet on the outside and from the inside, put an elastic ponytail holder around the fabric and the grommet . You wind up with a really pretty circular design on the outside of the now tighter garment.
Huh….ill have explore this idea a little more.
This was such a fantastic video! You are brilliant 🙂
Ha ha! Thanks Karen.
All my curtains have grommets. I didn't know they're out-of-style. However, I like this video because some of them have been overused and the grommets already fell off. I can now re-use them by sewing the torn-off grommets. Thanks.
Yes!
Just like you do with a drawer that doesn’t slide out easily use a candle and slide it back and forward across the rod and the curtains will slide easily. It will work on a shower curtain and a closet rod as well. A candle can help in many other ways.
Good advice.
I prefer grommets to old fashioned pinch pleat draperies. Poor baby 😂!
I understand…to each his/her own.😉
Grommets are classic, but each to their own.
Thanks. My livingroom is just a bit too wide for 2 panels but I didn't want to have 4 panels. After watching I will do 3 panels by cutting 1 in half and following your method it should look great.
Perfect!
I appreciate this tutorial so much!

Your talent is great however for those of us who grew up with those curtains never want to go back. I love grommet tops curtains and have never had the problem you were describing. It had to be her curtain rods. My suggestion is going to get a rod cover so it makes the rod smooth and the drapes glide over it. Everyone’s taste is different. When I see those types of drapes I think they have been hanging there since the 1960’s.
I understand. Her rod was not only hard to slide, but it was coming out of the wall as well. So it had to be replaced. Thank you for taking the time to commment Sophie.
@@MimzyandCompany I do love how you were able to transform those curtains as opposed to just tossing out and buying new.
This is VERY clever. But personally...seeing (and hearing) that ticky-tacky rod, isn't worth it.

Thank you so much! I tried this with a pair and it was so easy. They look great!
it was super easy for me ...I'm glad to hear the same for you. thanks for commenting and letting me know.
Thats a clever way to change up grommets. I have never liked drapes though. I was glad when they went out of style a gillion yrs ago and here they are coming back. lol I just went crazy and bought a new living room suite and dining room table and chairs and china cabinet. All matching in a 1960s modern style. I will have to figure out what kind of window treatment Im going to make. 🤔
yeah...I hear you. I do like a bare window sometimes...but curtains soften a room so beautifully. My clients always say....I just wish i'd installed these curtains sooner.
@@MimzyandCompany I dont like bare windows. I think window treatments pull a room together. I like a pocket rod curtains or I do like the grommets. I put them on a slightly smaller rod and they slide real easy. I like the hook rings, I think those look nice, but I just cant go full on pinch pleat drapes. lol
@@sewforlife586 yes agree that curtains pull a room together for sure. Thank you for taking g the time to comment.

You can achieve the same affect without sewing by just using drapery hooks, with pinching the fabric together (after u removal of cromet) attach them to the hook. Sewing is wonderful thank you 😊 for ur time
If your sister’s track is positioned just a bit lower, you could add the hooks in that lower position as you noted and the curtain top would then cover the unsightly track. It’s a thought anyway.
Yes. Very true.

Awesome! So glad to help Rebecca!
Brilliant idea thanks I would put the hooks an inch lower so the rod didn’t show. Thank you for the fabulous hack !
Thanks , yes I could def do that.
I find once you have the drapery hooks in for a year, they open up on the top, some fall out and they don’t open and close easily anymore. They slide out of the attachment rings. Especially when you have a few panels sewn together.
I've never experienced any of that. My drapery hooks must be different.
This is genius hack !! Great project . I can’t stand the grommets
Thank you! Me either .
Wow...this is genius! Thanks for sharing😊
Thanks!
I am capable of this and my curtains are a little long but not double the width like these. Sewing them like this will not cover my window at nights, . Cut the top off is easier than struggling with grommet removal and then sewing some Rufflet tape along? I like my grommets and they slide fine.. Whatever you find better though.
Yes. You have to have enough fullness in your fabric to this and still cover your window. If they slide fine and you don’t mi d the look of the grommets keep them as is
I love the grommets. They look much more modern than pleats. That is a lot of work just because it is a little hard to push the curtain across the rod. Nice work though
Thank you. A little hard is not the right description. It was a royal pain in the butt…EVERY SINGLE DAY TWICE A DAY. It was a little work one day for A LOT of relief forever more. 😃. Thank you for commenting.
