  • Released in 2019, the Hunter Pro Red Alox is Victorinox's answer to the two hand opening lock back Folding Hunter. As this version features a two hand opening instead of the more familiar one hand opening blade it is probably legal to carry in more locations.

    I believe the liners are made of steel (on all Hunter Pros).
    The rivets are usually nickel silver on the smaller Alox (nowadays), I guess that's the case here, too.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias

      I do believe you are correct. I knew the back spring is steel but I do believe the liners under the alox scales are stainless steel. Their web site say the pins are brass but they doe appear to be nickel silver, as you pointed out! I'll need to post a correction!

    • @miklospinter

      @@KnifeChatswithTobias Where did you find info about the pins on their website? I couldn't find anything there, at least not on the product page.
      SAKWiki talks about brass pins, but I believe that's only meant for the non-Alox versions. (They also mention bushings there which we don't have on the Alox.)

      @@miklospinter That is where I saw the comment of brass pins (sak-wiki). But they definitely look more like nickel silver.

    I like both the red and the silver alox versions of the hunter pro, but I don't own either one......yet. I also think if they could take the silver model and make the vic logo on it colored red, that would look really neat. Thanks for the look at this one, Tobias!

They eventually pop up, but they tend to hide in background. No hiding for that red. If I could find a farmer, or soldier 7 style in red I'd start switching over to red. I'll have to settle for bright Lil paracord fobs to help for now.

I still have the first one I ever owned from 1976 and it is still in service although for some reason the main blade is getting closer to the same look as the awl. I guess I may have over sharpened it 😢

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  Рік тому

      The thing with many knife blades is the they have a differential heat treatment so they hardness is really just along the cutting edge. So once you've sharpened beyond about that 1/16 or 1/8 in the steel is softer and edge retention goes out the window. I wonder if you could send it back to Victorinox to get the blade replaced. It sounds like it has served you well for many, many years!

    I absolutely love the smooth, I had a smooth Bantam till someone not so honest.... That was the only Alox I've ever had. I'd like a minichamp even if it's an old one. I'd like a Vagabond more than that I think, I don't care if they are Alox, I'd be happy just to have some SAKs/Vics again, I only have 2 or 3 all old and well used but one of them, one more needs scales made or bought, I've seen some really amusing 3D printed ones that strike my interest greatly & possibly even more than animal, which is difficult to do on a traditional/slipjoint, locking or not.
    That Cadet looks real neat, but IMO shame about the file and lack of a more useful item there.
    I have always looked at the large Vic like that with the opening hole, Some of those get pricey really fast. Maybe someday. w0w what a great idea on that p-clip! Maybe they will do a few colors eventually.
    Sitting here thinking if that was a Spyderco it would be more than twice the cost. (())Then you start showing some..lol your 111mm w/ the hole is super cool too, looks really useful to me.
    Heck yes!! I love a lot of Ganzos,,,Your Ganzo 729 is freaking cool, I wish I could acquire all the "circular/round" hole Ganzo knives. If by chance you ever wanna get rid of it please let me know, I'd really like to try and get it if possible. Sell/trade/etc.?
    FYI; I love copies, clones, counterfeits of all types and levels. I collect as many as I can.
    I don't have a Dragonfly (so many makes it hard to choose when buying for yet but I definitely have it on my list, probably more than one if I have the opportunity. I have a few Spyder Bryd models and like them, There are a couple more I wouldn't mind. They do show me I prefer a circular round perfect holy and not "shapes" if having a choice.

    I really like how Victorinox decided on how to attach the pocket clip. No tiny little T6 screws to strip out (small fine thread screws into aluminum=stripped & threads pulling out, sort of like how the head bolts are on GM Northstar engines). The sabre grind looks pretty low, is it pretty thick behind the edge?

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  3 роки тому +1

      You're right about those little screws. I've already removed and replaced that clip about a dozen times with no issues. With most of the screw on clips, I'm lucky if I can take it off and put back on twice without one of the screws giving me an issue. And there is no worry here about over tightening.

    440C or 1.4110 krupp/marine steel?
    That's a massive difference tbh.
    That's like saying, it's either s30v or 420j2 steel.
    440C (German 440C tho) is pretty much 1095 in quality but with rust resistance.
    1.4110 is a marine/surgical steel generally.
    Very soft, very low edge retention.
    (Oh and if I remember correctly, if it's in 1.4110 then it would mean it's the same steel as all the other Victorinox pocket knives.
    I'd actually wanna get the hunter if it's in 440C tho and I'd also understand it's much higher price point.)
    440C can remain tough till about 60-61HRC
    1.4110 is limited to 55-56HRC

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  3 роки тому

      1.4110 is more like 420HC that 420J2. The latest I'm reading is X38CrMo14, which is 1.4419. But yeah, there is a difference between 420HC and 440C.

      Several companies don't say what steel is use as it makes it easier to change the steel over time. I believe Knifes illustrated also said the steel was 1.4419 X38Cr14Mov. As for the Pro-Hunter, it is priced higher but has several advantages in my opinion. The reversible/removably clip, the lanyard hole, and the light weight and the overall ergonimics of the handle. I see a knife with a Case Tribal Mid-lock with a Morakniv Scandi grind and the size and shape of a Buck 110. And about as thin as Case Back pocket model. Who is a CopyCat now? The pocket clip is a neat; but the lanyard looks suspiciously copied too. Shame on you Victorinox; it might be Swiss made but it sure isn’t Swiss designed. This Swiss made beauty is priced at $100 dollars before tax and shipping that seems a tad over your stated price level Mr. Tobias Gibson. I watched most all of your holiday slideshows and was surprised to see 20 Case knives give or take one or two in your slide display. Then to my bigger surprise was a dozen GEC looking knives too. I would like to know where you get your GEC and Case knives for under $50 dollars. That is my next stop and shop store for sure. You may not like paying more than $50 dollars for a knife; but you sure did a lot things you didn’t like doing collecting knives. It looks like in 2021; we will be seeing a few more reviews of knives with slightly higher price points. God Bless.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  3 роки тому

      I definitely went over budget last year. If someone is selling you a GEC fro under $50 it is probably a counterfeit. Even the seconds are up there in price. I went overboard with GEC's last year, buying six of them! (I only have 8, one was given to me as a gift and I owned one from the previous year) I bought a half dozen or so Case knives, all around $35-$50 and that is normally the top of the price range for me. But that Sea Horse Whittler is definitely a budget buster, as well. Depending on Case pulls out the Vault, I might by a Case or two in 2021. On of the reasons I was able to afford some of the higher priced knives was because of that stupid Big R that is showing up on Rough Ryder Knives. I see the big R and look no further.
      Prices are also jumping on Rough Ryders. What used to be $ 10- S15 is now $20-$25! My main goal next year, pick up a few low hanging "semi grail knives" and continue with my search for nice large toothpicks. I'll also splurge a little on Red Alox knives (but the big four have already been bought). and check out the 58mm Classic LE's for the year. I'm also going to continue to look for good budget knives (under say $30, US) from countries other than China; and yeah that means a lot of 420, 4116, 440A Steel! But here are quite a few modestly priced knives coming out of Europe that will get the job done. Not sure if you saw it but I did a video on five brands that are not made in China with budget friendly knives under $25... ua-cam.com/video/lEpN2vPXkcI/v-deo.html
