- EgyptAir Flight 990 was on a routine flight when, en route to Cairo, the plane suddenly lost altitude and plunged towards the water. Tragically, the Boeing 767 slammed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, killing all 217 people on board. After the October 31, 1999 plane crash, the Egyptian government asked the American NTSB to handle the investigation. As investigators raced to find the cause, they had to consider every option. Was it a mechanical failure, or an intentional human maneuver that caused the plane to crash?

He put everything he had into the fight to save his plane and his passengers, even after undoubtedly learning that the man beside him who was supposed to be helping him, was actually trying to bring the plane down.
All the more tragic that Egypt Air and Egyptian government, in its effort to save face for a murderous Al-Batouti, never fully recognized the truly heroic efforts of Captain El-Habashi.

I said the exact same thing. There's always multiple factors involved.
First, the man oddly insisted strongly on changing his flight spot for no apparent reason - Second, for what possible reason would you EVER shut down ALL the engines while flying over the ocean at night, that guarantees the plane crashing into the ocean, then add the fact he refused to answer the other pilot or pull back on his control yoke - no this man had a death/revenge wish and didnt care if he took a plane full of innocent people with him because of his personal problems that he created himself - he was mentally unstable no matter how you try to dance around it.
Please understand that in Islam If you Kill non believers ( Khafir) you will go in Haven and get 72 Hoors ( Virgins) . The way the FO ( Al Batuti ) behaved with Women employees in Hotels and the fact that he was not going to be flying again to America, he may be upset and following his religious beliefs that Killing other people will help him go to Haven. He purposely shut the engine to crash in the sea, he even did not reply to the Captain when he asked him what happened because he was trying to Crash the plane. This is the reason why the Egypt Government does not want to accept that it was Al Batutis fault . You will see the same behaviour in Malaysia Government for Malaysian Flight 370 disappeared in 2014.

I agree. If something was wrong with the plane than he should have told the captain when he was asked. He kept pushing the control yoke down instead of up.
I understand his family not wanting to accept their father was responsible, I understand them living in denial because they don’t want to believe their father was a sexual deviant who harassed women constantly, but everyone else can see what truly happened and I feel bad for his family living in that much denial. It’s a horrible truth, to recognise their father was a deviant in this way, how he harassed women constantly, and that he chose to crash the plane on purpose after being told he was being fired.
He was a selfish man who only thought of himself, he harassed women because he was selfish, he crashed the plane because he didn’t want to live in shame because he was selfish, and his crimes were covered up for a time because the airline were selfish. Just selfishness all around.

I think the family is vile, especially that nephew. He looks slimy too, and there’s something very annoying about him. It’s pretty obvious to anyone watching or who’s looked into this case it was suicide by pilot and murder-suicide, so being in denial in the face of this is very ridiculous, makes them look silly, and is also a bit of a slap in the face and egregious to the victims themselves (they’re dead so it doesn’t matter really) but the victim’s families. The level of delusional - especially that publicly maintained - is very irritating to me.

I hope the victims watch this show and develop their own truth to it and Batouti’s family come out of denial and claiming it as just an accident. It was never proven it was the sheared elevators.

I feel so disgusted by his family's and the Egyptian president's efforts to cover up for one man while disregarding the many lives lost because of one man's selfishness.
The fact alone that he was eager to fly the plane alone should already be more than enough to convince anyone that he's planning to do something really bad.
Especially after take off 20 min later coming to chase first officer out would have been a clear sign something is off and the young first officer should have point blank said no...

He was never going to fly the plane. He was first officer, not the one flying at the time. The plane was in auto-pilot and he took control when the opportunity presented itself.

Yes it was not an accident but an offensive hostile action specially when you know who was on board. Don’t you know that the tail unit was destroyed by means of a missile and that is why the plane dived. To cover the dirty act they declared that the captain committed suicide. One of the black boxes was recovered but they claimed it fell from the robot’s handle and was destroyed although the resistance of this box is below nuclear explosion. Imagine these dirty lies against a dead man that can not defend himself. Go back to history and check different lies Saïd to explain dirty actions like the suicidal act of Marlene Monroe and the nuclear scientist professor Almashad or Nabaweya Mousa. I am really astonished that you enforce their dirty story.

Only Egypt disputes this and despite that unnofficially Egyptair adopted the two person rule, if a pilot leaves the cockpit, a flight attendant must stay with the remaining pilot to make sure nothing happens.
Same goes for Malaysian Airlines, despite in Malaysia it being still doubted that MH370 was flown into the ocean by the captain, they instated a two person rule shortly afterwards and after Germanwings not long ago the two person rule became a global standard. The reinforced doors help people keep out quite well since 9/11. But sometimes that's a problem when the pilot is locked out.
But everyone except those involved have long accepted that both Egyptair 990 and MH370 were deliberate acts the relief FO and the Cpt. MH370 we still miss the wreckage to conclusively prove it but not Egyptair 990. Mass murder in both cases.
There should never be a case where someone is left alone in the cockpit of a passenger airliner. Ever.
Why not. If the pilot is reliable, and if autopilot is working. The other pilot should only quit for few minutes

@@Omer1996E.C No pilot is 100% reliable. There have been several cases of pilots ditching planes deliberately.
I think it's smart, because sometimes people slip through the cracks in the system. Reports are falsified or forgotten, records are not updated. People's mental health information is often overlooked or overclassified
@@Omer1996E.C because the lone pilot could become incapacitated. They had an incident on another airplane in the states (Not sure which one, sorry) that the first officer HAD TO lock the captain out of the cockpit because he was having a psychotic breakdown. Tough call and some airlines allow the head flight attendant to stay in the cockpit. Just too much can be left to chance.
Much respect for Captain El-Habashi, and First Officer Adel Anwar. For the First Officer for wanting to stand his ground and remain in his seat, and the Captain for his heroic efforts to try to save everyone.

The reason why Egypt is in denial that he purposely crashed the jet, goes back to the old saying. Sometimes the truth hurts. And sometimes people deny the truth, because it hurts.

This was 100% intentional and the Eqyptians only proposed an alternative to cover up the failure of their actions.

I blame management who tells a pilot getting on an aeroplane he will potentially fly that he will be fired.
I agree - few managers have insight into the employee psyche and internal workings of the people that they are supposed to "manage". The term "manager" is a much maligned term. As an experienced pilot, it is plain to me that Batouti obviously did it:
1) No flying pilot is going to say NOTHING when the Captain returns and asks him what is going wrong. Impossible.
2) It is beyond "coincidence" that a modern airliner in straight-and-level AUTOPILOT flight over the ocean SUDDENLY develops an aberrant control motion only WHILE THE OTHER 2 CREW-MEMBERS ARE OUT OF THE COCKPIT. Not believable.
3) No flying pilot will ignore such a sudden "control malfunction" for 15 seconds before taking any action whatsoever. Impossible.
4) No working professional pilot, ever, has volunteered (with unusual eagerness and forcefulness) to "take over" the 1st shift only 20 minutes into the flight. Impossible. We all know what a rest cycle is and what it is there for.
What a despicable excuse for a man to take all those other people with him.

Because Egypt usually chooses to blame the equipment. It’s much more likely the NTSB is right. Sadly, the disagreements prevented measures that could’ve been in place to prevent other pilot suicides like Germanwings Flight 9525.

Egypt had a culture of such reverence for pilots, likely from the Arab-Israeli wars, that they couldn't bring themselves to say a pilot had deliberately crashed a plane.
Undoubtedly they were afraid that everyone would be afraid to trust Egyptian pilots after that if they admitted it. But if the company had acknowledged its error in letting him fly after being fired, that would have prevented that outcome.

A red flag should've went up to the Captain when the relief 1st Officer forced himself prematurely into Adel's Amour's shift. Also, the Captain should not have allowed that handover nor should he have left the cockpit with El Batouty alone before his shift officially started. The pilots were too laxed.
You are correct if they had the USDOT Federal Aviation Administration two persons in cockpit rule what will happen is that the relief Captain would have been with El Batouty and then return to the seat with the actual captain being back on the seat.
I think this accident happened before the implementation of the two person cockpit rule. That rule came in around 2016 after Andreas lubitz flew the A320 into the alps on purpose.
You will never know . But new rules has been implemented so it won’t happen .

Such a big loss when you hear that they were a number of pilot too on board it's very sad.
Unrecoverable situation. Engines off in a dive over the ocean at night. He didn't lock the door because there was no need. It's a miracle thw captain made it back in. It's unfortunate he was beginning to realise it was deliberate. Instead of fighting the airliner he should fought the FO, then control could have been regained but likely too late to restart any engines so either way it would have been an ocean ditching at night. Extremely unlikely to be succesful.
The nephews total denial of his uncles obvious suicidal mission is totally irrelevant.
He had no inside expert knowledge of the thorough and professional findings by the NTSB - only a loyal belief in his uncles innocence and that counts for nothing.

At 43:57, it seems he is projecting saying it is a cover up. I don't know what I would do is this situation if it was my relative. However, I feel the NTSB has a track record of reporting causes no matter if it makes Boeing, Airbus, etc look bad. It doesn't make sense why the NTSB would highlight shortcomings (in airplane design, pilot training, poor maintenance ) for so many accidents and try to cover it up for 1 exception.
The Egyptian government refusing to turn over info on the pilots background is more indicative of a cover up to me.

How can they possibly deny, all to protect image and reputation of one person, what that co-pilot did, both preceding and during the flight? It’s so clear to everyone else what this scenario was. I know suicide is huge sin in their culture, but to deny and try to drive the investigation away from the truth is wrong. So many lives lost, but they’re all out to protect the reputation of one. Disgraceful in my opinion.

When one person is responsible for the loss of so many innocent lives, because their personal life was going through a bad patch, they should just hold up their hands and admit the truth. Just like they did with the co pilot of the Germanwings flight that deliberately crashed the aircraft full of passengers into the French mountains. I do realise culture plays a big part though.

Pride is a hell of a thing. What the nephew said explains it all "IT was a simple plane crash" but then follows it up with "Its a cover up" if they are covering something up then it isnt a simple plane crash. They just dont want to admit that a man that was held up on the highest pedestal would do such a horrible thing. That he wouldnt just unalive himself, but take hundreds of other people with him to avoid the consequences of his actions.
I disagree with Al-Batouti's nephew. It is not unusual for someone who is suicidal to act perfectly normally. Families are often in shock because they had no idea that their loved one was even depressed, let alone wanting to take their own life. Sadly, I've known seven people who committed suicide - all men, mostly under 35yrs old - and in only one case was the family aware that there was a risk. One of those young men was on holiday with a group of friends, larking around on the beach just like all the others. He excused himself and went back to his hotel and ended his life.
After you tell someone they are fired or going to be, you take away all their ability to retaliate. The Captain’s best chance in this situation would have been a chokehold. In addition, pilots now carry weapons. Egypt Air screwed up big time.
If he was fired he should've been escorted as a passenger back to egypt and not allowed to fly.
He should have not been allowed to board the plane with that info. Wait until he was back home, have HR fire him, demand any passes etc or keys and return his unform. You dont tell a person they are going to be fired b4 they board a plane for duty.

When I worked in the airline, in situations where one of the pilots had to step out of the cockpit - a flight attendant had to go there. A pilot was never allowed to be in a cockpit by himself.

Nit-picking a small part of the video - the VSI (vertical speed indicator) would never spin around and around like that. The altimeter would, but the VSI would just peg at its max indication and stay there.
All that money towards investigation when it was crystal clear three minutes in this video that the so-called ladies' man was a crazy lunatic. Lesson learned: don't tell a pilot he's fired until after his last flight!!

If there was an issue with a hardover stabilizer, the plane would have not began to gain altitude after falling it would've gone straight into the ocean.

Absolutely disgusting how this can happen. I think tensions went up when the First Officer was told that it would be his final flight to the United States Of America that he wanted some sort of revenge on the airline so he decided it would be the perfect time to take revenge on the airline when the captain left to go to the bathroom. I think also it didn't help that he never got promoted to captain which would have made the First Officer more upset which also corelates to why he wanted to take revenge on the airline and all passengers and crew on board.
The boss that reprimanded him was also on the plane. There’s no denying he was responsible.

Whenever I seek answers to difficult questions, I ALWAYS look to history for answers.
There was one eerily similar case that occurred 50-years ago in the ex-Soviet Union that strongly resembled this one. The case revolved around a Russian man who was the most prolific and sadistic mass murderer in Soviet history, killing a hundred boys and girls in the most grisly ways imaginable. The reason they never pursued him was because the Soviet government refused to believe that a Russian citizen could commit such heinous crimes, believing that only "sick and twisted Americans" were capable of such senseless violence. So they stonewalled the entire investigation, allowing him to kill virtually at will for years and years. Many dozens of innocent children could have easily been saved, but in their abject denial, the murders continued without interruption. That is nearly the identical circumstance here, where an entire government refused to believe that one of their own could have killed himself and others intentionally. Try explaining that concept to the hundreds of terrorists who commit suicide on a regular basis, taking out hundreds of innocent bystanders in the process. This was clearly an Egyptian coverup with absolutely no mitigating evidence to the contrary.
P.S. Btw, the name of the movie I just mentioned is "Citizen X," available everywhere. Starring Donald Sutherland (who won the Emmy for his performance) and a superb Stephen Rea("V for Vendetta"), and Max Von Sydow ("The Exorcist") this is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is one of the most engrossing and riveting American films in years. WATCH IT.
I read that story too, the investigators were unbelievably slack & should’ve arrested him on the evidence in his bag alone! Or at least watched him.
His name was Chikatilo I think, I am sure I misspelled it. I watched a documentary about him as well. He was broken due to consistent mental and biogical trauma, never got reprimanded, continued killing and then when trialed family members of the deceased tried to kill him. Citizens stood up for the family members as well.

Yes, Andrei Chikatilo. Of all the murdering monsters I've ever heard of, he rates way up there. But even worse than his crimes, the way the Soviets let him go was the biggest crime of all. It's called, "Denial."

According to the documentary, superiors in N.Y. told him prior to this flight, that he would not return to the USA. I’ve a feeling that the co-pilot realized that upon return to Egypt he’d be terminated and disgraced, so he suicided out, knowing that Egyptian officials along with his families, would shamelessly reject the suicide theory. Hindsight being perfect, this likely would not have happened if the co-pilot had not been informed that they were on to his behaviors until after they returned to Egypt.

i don’t speak arabic, but even with what he said and his translation, that doesn’t mean it refutes he was meaning to crash the plane and it wasn’t intentional. He can still be saying it ‘positively’. Like, I put my faith in god - as in hopefully he will look kindly on me and understand or something. So I found what he said bizarre - he was trying to implicitly defend the murderer.
‘i put my faith/trust in god’ or whatever the phrase means (not an arabic speaker) could just mean in any context that he hopes god will forgive him and understand or look kindly on him. It doesn’t mean that he didn’t intent on crashing the plane or that he wasn’t trying to, so I don’t understand. Just because it has a positive meaning means nothing. It’s just like saying ‘god bless’. I could say god bless before doing something evil to try to absolve myself in the eyes or god or something (i’m not religious so i’m just conjecturing but yeah).
@@oliverwortley3822 i agree, it’ nuanced, but in the context of what was happening it doesn’t sound right. If he thought they were crashing, he’d have used other “blessings” appropriate for the situation, it’s not conclusive evidence, put together with other evidence, it makes more sense

He may have known it was coming before they made it official. What you need to do is suspend with pay if there is an investigation but the culture was too much of one of blind respect for these pilots to do so. If he had been cleared he could've returned to work, no harm done.
There was a similar one with a German pilot who also suicided with a plane of passengers. He thought his failing eyesight would cost him his job and he had been treated for mental illness. The medical privacy laws in Germany foolishly blocked doctors from notifying the airline.

I posted a similar reply on one of the threads. If they had wanted to be kind to his family, they could simply have offered him early retirement on some agreed medical grounds.
When someone becomes incompetent, but has not committed a serious crime, agreed early retirement is not uncommon here in the UK. This guy certainly ticked all the boxes.

In all the airplane disaster shows I have watched, the NTSB has always held the manufacturers of all planes accountable for any design defects and/or flaws. Corruption is not in any way shape or form happening in the NTSB. Corruption does exist in the USA, but not within the NTSB.
I would agree that there is no corruption in the NTSB. The FAA on the other hand, is rife with corruption.

This is such a sad, F*cked up event that didn’t need to happen. There were several good military personnel on board. Not to mention the retired couple that just wanted to finally travel. So many lives were lost all due to one persons selfishness. Just a sad situation.
The flight simulator was shown that this pilot did the same thing several times to make sure he knew how to crash this plane he was embarrassed that he was to be fired, the error was you never tell a pilot this is your last flight he should have fired him right there why wait a day he kill all these people and his friends and family are to ashamed and they should be there father is a disgrace and disgusted human he never give a thought about anyone other than himself he dishonor his whole family and country,

The man was totally unstable and had no right to be sitting in the cockpit of a passenger aircraft. The airline was far too tolerant and wished to protect its own reputation. They should have got him out long before. Do you wish to be flown, along with your family, by a pilot who never made the grade to become a captain and in addition was mentally unstable ?
