This is the ultimate OEM setup for the E60. The USB video function only works with Iphone 4/4S but that’s ok since it fits perfect in the E60 armrest and you can use its touchscreen to control which part of the video you want to see. To get the video playback you need to retrofit the video cable from the aux in the armrest to the back of the CIC like I show you in the VIDEO . This will upgrade your aux port to aux video and you won’t need your aux audio ever again if you have USB audio and Bluetooth audio. This is much better than the bs android units since the sound quality is USB and is much better than aux audio which you are stuck with on the android. Also, android unit requires you to add all these additional wiring harnesses to the back of the CIC which will make it too cramped back there and likely to overheat or for some wires to break. Also, the android will hurt resale value. I would never buy an E60 with an android unit in it. You don’t need CarPlay if you have Bluetooth audio, USB video, and Spotify on your Idrive screen. Can you play music videos on your Idrive screen with CarPlay?
Hi , great video , one question... can you please explain where the 3rd wire from cic video cable goes in the usb in the armrest ?? You had 3 wires in the back of the cic and from what I saw 2 wires goin to usb in armrest ?
It will work with only the 2 wires (Blue & White) since they are Video Positive and Video Negative, but BMW included the 3rd wire (Clear) as a ground or shield to reduce any interference just to be safe. When Bimmertech sent me the instructions, they assumed that I still want to keep my AUX Audio so they tell you to leave the other 2 slots on the AUX portion of the USB port open for AUX Audio Left & Right and splice the wire in slot 2 for AUX Audio Ground. However, now that I have USB Audio and Bluetooth Audio, I don't care about AUX Audio anymore and would prefer to dedicate the AUX portion solely for the VIDEO CONNECTION so I ended up connecting the Clear wire into slot 3 on the AUX portion. The only reason I tackled this project is because Bimmertech was able to provide me clear instructions. There is a lot of conflicting information about this upgrade online but no clear step-by-step guide like I found with Bimmertech. Hope that helps!
Thanks , I did the retrofit in my E60 myself, got the CIC and Combox , I am piecing the parts together for the video in like you did. Look s like you have done a lot to CIC , but and I know you ll know what I mean how bout a rear camera retrofit ? That’s the one I tryed but no go ! E60 never came with Combox or rear view camera with cic I drive , Combox you can do it by using e90 Ssd file , but rear camera is tough one .
Hi Andy, I have bmw e82 2010 with cic prof and combox(S6NF and S6FL). I have enabled that usb video code and already try with snap in adapter and iPhone 4s. That brings me options to screen where I go in iphone video with idrive, but play just music without video. Do you know what I need? Is maybe problem with iOS7 or I must upgrade usb/aux with AV and connect them to CiC? Do you have any idea how I can connect snap in directly to cic with av support cable? Thanks
I would upgrade the USB/aux port with AV like I show you in this video if you have the USB port in the armrest. This way you can maneuver your IPhone 4S easily and use its touch screen to control your video files since you will use the 30-pin to AV cable instead of the snap-in adapter. Yes, this feature was actually meant for the E90/92 since the model years went until 2011 and 2013 and BMW introduced the COMBOX in 2011. So first of all you need to have the COMBOX which gives you the ability to plug in your iPhone into the armrest USB port and play music with album art. You will know you have the COMBOX if you have Office and ConnectedDrive and Bluetooth Audio. In addition to the COMBOX, BMW also offered the 6NF Extended IPhone Connectivity which gives you USB VIDEO from 30-pin Apple devices and at the time the IPhone 4S 64GB was king of the hill. What I am showcasing in this video is how to retrofit this 6NF option that was actually intended to be used with a Snap-in adaptor made for the iPhone 4/4S that fits in the armrest. However, BMW also released this IPhone video cable version that goes from 30-pin to AUX and USB which is actually better than the Snap-in adaptor since you can maneuver your iPhone more easily and use it's touchscreen to control the video playback. I have E61 from 11/2005 with retrofited CIC+ Combox telematic. I have USB and Aux in armrest, but both connected to Combox. Do I need special plug (USB with AV) or USB with Aux is ok? Aux must be connected do CIC?
Yes, you need the USB AV-IN port, the part number is in the video at 3:50, the AUX must be connected to the CIC, you will replace your AUX audio with AUX video to CIC, you won't need AUX audio anymore if you have USB Audio and Bluetooth Audio

Correct, you will be giving up AUX audio but you don't need it anymore now that you have Bluetooth Audio and USB AUDIO & VIDEO and, if you really want, you can connect an extra USB port to the Blue port on the Combox and leave it in the trunk
Correct, the AV to CIC wire is for VIDEO only. The audio portion of your .mp4 file will play from the USB connection and will sound extremely loud, clear, and powerful, this is why the IPhone 4S is so awesome and goes hand-in-hand with the Combox

Just find a used IPhone 4S on eBay and you will be happy. You can get really good condition ones for under $50 and it will stay in the armrest. Since it won’t be your primary phone, it will stay in the armrest and you don’t have to connect it every time you get in the car.

It's not possible to downgrade anymore, but there is an advantage if your 4S is in IOS9. In IOS9, the video files will display correctly in 16:9 everytime you start the car without having to go into the iPhone to select them, but UA-cam output does not work anymore. In IOS6, you have to select TV Out in the iPhone settings everytime you start the car otherwise the video dimensions will not be correct, but then you also get UA-cam output. I am waiting for a 4S 64gb in IOS7 to come in from eBay so I can see if IOS7 will give you the best of both worlds: UA-cam playback AND correct video dimensions every time.
You have to upgrade to the CIC IDrive, but if you have the MASK then there is no navigation so it is more complicated to go to CIC so you are better off selling your car and finding a 2010 E60 that comes with the CIC IDrive from factory then all you need to do is get the Combox so you can get Bluetooth Audio, USB IPhone connectivity and the ability to do the iPhone 4/4S video upgrade in this video

The iPhone 4s is connected with USB, but also AUX at the same time. This USB part is for audio and control of your files and the AUX is for the video. Only iPhone 4/4s supports this is since it has VIDEO OUT. This is the only way to get OEM USB Video on BMW E60 & CIC IDrive.

Order it just in case since you need that piece to connect to the back of the CIC, you want to have all the pieces ready before you start taking things apart. Also you need the little connector piece that connects to the AUX portion of your armrest USB port -> www.amazon.ca/BMW-Terminal-Connector-Housing-61138380696/dp/B076GQNNFQ. You will have to sacrifice your AUX audio for this Video Connection and you can use the connector piece from your AUX audio but it will be more work and the AUX audio wires will just be hanging there after so its better to just get the 8380696 part. Once you have USB Audio & Video you will never want to go back to AUX audio.
The parts for the FBAS cable and USB Port should be the same. The first step for you is make sure you have the Combox in the trunk and USB audio in the armrest. You'll know you have the Combox if you have ConnectedDrive and Office and Bluetooth Audio on your CIC. If you don't, then you can get it here -> www.bimmer-tech.net/category-bmw-combox-retrofit If you get the Combox from BimmerTech, ask them about the USB VIDEO retrofit and they should send you the parts and instructions for the F10. They normally don't offer this retrofit anymore since it only works with 30-pin Apple devices since they have VIDEO OUT. The iPhone 4S 64GB is the BEST DEVICE FOR THIS and is GOD'S GIFT to the CIC IDRIVE. They assume that everyone has moved on from iPhone 4S which is why the retrofit isn't offered anymore. But the newer iPhones aren't necessarily better since Apple REMOVED the VIDEO OUT function when they introduced the Lightning connection on the iPhone 5 in 2012. BimmerTech made an exception for me so I'm sure if you ask them they will send you a package for the F10. Then just find a used iPhone 4S 64GB on eBay and it will sit in your F10 armrest. I found one for $30. The iPhone 4S will be like a special multimedia tablet for your car that will fit nicely in the armrest and will remember the last place in the video when you turn on the car so you don't have to connect every time you get in the car which makes it WAY BETTER than CarPlay or Android auto.
UA-cam and Video playback are the most important things you would want on your CIC Screen. I think you are better off using the other internet apps on your actual IPhone because you can't use them while you're driving anyway. This is why the best setup is to have the iPhone 4S for your album art/music video library and then have a newer IPhone (that you can put between the handbrake) for bluetooth audio. This way you can use Bluetooth Audio for Spotify and receive texts and calls from your newer iPhone. This setup is far better than CarPlay since its free and with a better designed screen where you can actually see the video. Any other App that would require you to touch the IDrive screen is stupid and you are better off using it on your actual iPhone's screen.
Yes, it will work on all E60 models with the CIC IDrive + Combox. If your M5 does not have the CIC IDrive, you can get it from BimmerTech here -> www.bimmer-tech.net/category-bmw-cic-navigation-system-retrofit They will ask you for the VIN of your car and CODE the CIC unit to match the options and spec your E60 has. They will also include a K+DCAN cable and remote coding session so they can code the CIC and make sure all the features are working in your car.
There was a brief window last year where you could download IOS6 from here -> ipsw.me/iPhone4,1 and then use iTunes to downgrade, but Apple closed that window so now the only way is to find one on eBay in IOS6. However, there is some benefit in having it in IOS9. In IOS9, the VIDEO OUT is improved since the video will always play in the correct dimensions when selecting it from the IDrive's menu, but the UA-cam through VIDEO OUT function is removed. In IOS6, you will need to select the video from the IPhone's menu in order to get the correct dimensions, but you get the added benefit of UA-cam through VIDEO OUT. This is why I got 2 iPhone 4S's. I found another 64gb one in IOS9 on eBay for $30! Hope that helps
The CIC file for this is taken from an E90 since this feature was only offered in 2011+ models. Do you have the Combox installed and Bluetooth Audio and Album art working? It should as long as you have the Combox as well I don't see why not. The FBAS cable will be the same, but the location of the PINS on the back of the CIC in the E82 might be different. As long as you can find a way to route the FBAS video cable, it should work. No, E60 never had this feature from factory because it first came in 2011 BMW models that had the Combox and E60 last model year was 2010. You need to replace the Bluetooth module in the trunk with Combox first. @@mR_Reddexe iOS 9 actually makes the video out feature better since it shows the aspect ratio of the video correctly the first time when selecting the video with the Idrive controller. In iOS 6, you have to re-select the video from the actual iPhone to get the correct aspect ratio, however you do have the ability to use personal hotspot from a newer iPhone to watch UA-cam since the UA-cam app still works on the iPhone 4S on iOS 6 (at least it still did when I did this project in 2020). Are you sure you pushed the pins in all the way when connecting them to the AUX port in the armrest? You should hear a clicking sound to know they are firmly secure. Try putting the clear wire into slot 3 on the AUX port, but I remember it worked without having to do that. Also, try coding the COMBOX as well for CDMM_USB_VIDEO both. The ECU for COMBOX is MEDIA. Also, one more important thing! Are you doing this project on an E60? If so, make sure the USB cable from the armrest USB port goes directly into the COMBOX. Make sure it doesn't pass through the USB hub that was fitted to these E60s that had a MULF unit. That USB hub becomes useless once you get the COMBOX. You will know if there is a direct connection from the armrest USB port to the COMBOX if the album art from your iPhone music app loads quickly in only a few seconds instead of 14 seconds for each song! @@bmwdiy Thanks for quick reply. I'm doing this on my E93. I have the CIC.c1a version and the combox cmediar.c05 I made sure to set the CDMM_USB_VIDEO "both" in the CIC but do not see this in the combox coding. I also made sure to set the CIC AUX1 to wert_21 to signify the FBAS 2,12 video connection. Both the pins in the AUX video connector clicked into place and made sure they were fully seated. I still don't get any video. The CIC still recognizes when the 4s is connected and displays album art and artist. Just no video from movies shows in the spot. Its just a black square where the video is supposed to be with only audio playing
@@mR_Reddexe Is the COMBOX retrofitted or did it come with the car? I think your issue might be that the pin locations for AUX1 may be different on the back of the E93’s CIC than in the E60’s CIC.
No issue, you need to install the COMBOX first in the trunk which replaces your TCU unit and gives your CIC enhanced Bluetooth and Enhanced USB. Then your need to CODE USB Video for your armrest USB port. Watch the WHOLE video to find out. The COMBOX DIY and link where you can order it is in the description.

You need the iPhone 4/4s because it needs to use the USB and AUX connection together to play video. The audio comes from USB and the video from AUX.

BMW DIY so the old USB wire in the USB/AUX goes Into the USB/AV in plug. And the only hardware change is the AV to CIC wire.

No, because Apple removed the VIDEO OUT function when they introduced the Lightning connection on the IPhone 5 in 2012. They did this to make you pay more for Apple TV and Apple Carplay. This is why the IPhone 4S 64gb is the best device for this and is God’s gift to the E60 and the CIC IDrive. The newer IPhones will not fit as perfectly in the E60 armrest. Just find a used IPhone 4S on eBay and you will be happy. You can get really good condition ones for under $50 and it will stay in the armrest. Since it won’t be your primary phone, it will stay in the armrest and you don’t have to connect it every time you get in the car.

It's not possible to downgrade anymore, but there is an advantage if your 4S is in IOS9. In IOS9, the video files will display correctly in 16:9 everytime you start the car without having to go into the iPhone to select them, but UA-cam output does not work anymore. In IOS6, you have to select TV Out in the iPhone settings everytime you start the car otherwise the video dimensions will not be correct, but then you also get UA-cam output. I am waiting for a 4S 64gb in IOS7 to come in from eBay so I can see if IOS7 will give you the best of both worlds: UA-cam playback AND correct video dimensions every time.

You have to upgrade to the CIC IDrive, but if you have the MASK then there is no navigation so it is more complicated to go to CIC so you are better off selling your car and finding a 2010 E60 that comes with the CIC IDrive from factory then all you need to do is get the Combox so you can get Bluetooth Audio, USB IPhone connectivity and the ability to do the iPhone 4/4S video upgrade in this video
Watch UA-cam on my e60 Screen. That's exactly what I've been trying to do via one of my BMW USB's or Bluetooth.

The iPhone 4s is connected with USB, but also AUX at the same time. This USB part is for audio and control of your files and the AUX is for the video. Only iPhone 4/4s supports this is since it has VIDEO OUT. This is the only way to get OEM USB Video on BMW E60 & CIC IDrive.

Order it just in case since you need that piece to connect to the back of the CIC, you want to have all the pieces ready before you start taking things apart. Also you need the little connector piece that connects to the AUX portion of your armrest USB port -> www.amazon.ca/BMW-Terminal-Connector-Housing-61138380696/dp/B076GQNNFQ.
You will have to sacrifice your AUX audio for this Video Connection and you can use the connector piece from your AUX audio but it will be more work and the AUX audio wires will just be hanging there after so its better to just get the 8380696 part. Once you have USB Audio & Video you will never want to go back to AUX audio.

The parts for the FBAS cable and USB Port should be the same. The first step for you is make sure you have the Combox in the trunk and USB audio in the armrest. You'll know you have the Combox if you have ConnectedDrive and Office and Bluetooth Audio on your CIC. If you don't, then you can get it here -> www.bimmer-tech.net/category-bmw-combox-retrofit
If you get the Combox from BimmerTech, ask them about the USB VIDEO retrofit and they should send you the parts and instructions for the F10. They normally don't offer this retrofit anymore since it only works with 30-pin Apple devices since they have VIDEO OUT. The iPhone 4S 64GB is the BEST DEVICE FOR THIS and is GOD'S GIFT to the CIC IDRIVE. They assume that everyone has moved on from iPhone 4S which is why the retrofit isn't offered anymore. But the newer iPhones aren't necessarily better since Apple REMOVED the VIDEO OUT function when they introduced the Lightning connection on the iPhone 5 in 2012. BimmerTech made an exception for me so I'm sure if you ask them they will send you a package for the F10. Then just find a used iPhone 4S 64GB on eBay and it will sit in your F10 armrest. I found one for $30. The iPhone 4S will be like a special multimedia tablet for your car that will fit nicely in the armrest and will remember the last place in the video when you turn on the car so you don't have to connect every time you get in the car which makes it WAY BETTER than CarPlay or Android auto.
Andy, can you still have internet, live browser, with this setup ?
UA-cam and Video playback are the most important things you would want on your CIC Screen. I think you are better off using the other internet apps on your actual IPhone because you can't use them while you're driving anyway. This is why the best setup is to have the iPhone 4S for your album art/music video library and then have a newer IPhone (that you can put between the handbrake) for bluetooth audio. This way you can use Bluetooth Audio for Spotify and receive texts and calls from your newer iPhone. This setup is far better than CarPlay since its free and with a better designed screen where you can actually see the video. Any other App that would require you to touch the IDrive screen is stupid and you are better off using it on your actual iPhone's screen.

Yes, it will work on all E60 models with the CIC IDrive + Combox. If your M5 does not have the CIC IDrive, you can get it from BimmerTech here -> www.bimmer-tech.net/category-bmw-cic-navigation-system-retrofit
They will ask you for the VIN of your car and CODE the CIC unit to match the options and spec your E60 has. They will also include a K+DCAN cable and remote coding session so they can code the CIC and make sure all the features are working in your car.

There was a brief window last year where you could download IOS6 from here -> ipsw.me/iPhone4,1 and then use iTunes to downgrade, but Apple closed that window so now the only way is to find one on eBay in IOS6. However, there is some benefit in having it in IOS9. In IOS9, the VIDEO OUT is improved since the video will always play in the correct dimensions when selecting it from the IDrive's menu, but the UA-cam through VIDEO OUT function is removed. In IOS6, you will need to select the video from the IPhone's menu in order to get the correct dimensions, but you get the added benefit of UA-cam through VIDEO OUT. This is why I got 2 iPhone 4S's. I found another 64gb one in IOS9 on eBay for $30! Hope that helps

The CIC file for this is taken from an E90 since this feature was only offered in 2011+ models. Do you have the Combox installed and Bluetooth Audio and Album art working? It should as long as you have the Combox as well I don't see why not. The FBAS cable will be the same, but the location of the PINS on the back of the CIC in the E82 might be different. As long as you can find a way to route the FBAS video cable, it should work. No, E60 never had this feature from factory because it first came in 2011 BMW models that had the Combox and E60 last model year was 2010. You need to replace the Bluetooth module in the trunk with Combox first. The AV-IN USB port is from 2011+ E92 or 2011+ F10 but luckily fits in the E60 armrest no problem ua-cam.com/video/jozV--ldsDc/v-deo.html

@@mR_Reddexe iOS 9 actually makes the video out feature better since it shows the aspect ratio of the video correctly the first time when selecting the video with the Idrive controller. In iOS 6, you have to re-select the video from the actual iPhone to get the correct aspect ratio, however you do have the ability to use personal hotspot from a newer iPhone to watch UA-cam since the UA-cam app still works on the iPhone 4S on iOS 6 (at least it still did when I did this project in 2020). Are you sure you pushed the pins in all the way when connecting them to the AUX port in the armrest? You should hear a clicking sound to know they are firmly secure. Try putting the clear wire into slot 3 on the AUX port, but I remember it worked without having to do that. Also, try coding the COMBOX as well for CDMM_USB_VIDEO both. The ECU for COMBOX is MEDIA.
Also, one more important thing! Are you doing this project on an E60? If so, make sure the USB cable from the armrest USB port goes directly into the COMBOX. Make sure it doesn't pass through the USB hub that was fitted to these E60s that had a MULF unit. That USB hub becomes useless once you get the COMBOX. You will know if there is a direct connection from the armrest USB port to the COMBOX if the album art from your iPhone music app loads quickly in only a few seconds instead of 14 seconds for each song! Hope that helps. Let me know if you get it to work.

I made sure to set the CDMM_USB_VIDEO "both" in the CIC but do not see this in the combox coding. I also made sure to set the CIC AUX1 to wert_21 to signify the FBAS 2,12 video connection.
Both the pins in the AUX video connector clicked into place and made sure they were fully seated. I still don't get any video. The CIC still recognizes when the 4s is connected and displays album art and artist. Just no video from movies shows in the spot. Its just a black square where the video is supposed to be with only audio playing
@@mR_Reddexe Is the COMBOX retrofitted or did it come with the car? I think your issue might be that the pin locations for AUX1 may be different on the back of the E93’s CIC than in the E60’s CIC.
This retrofit got a big issue because cic doesnt bring the option to assume the video... loose money on this 👎
No issue, you need to install the COMBOX first in the trunk which replaces your TCU unit and gives your CIC enhanced Bluetooth and Enhanced USB. Then your need to CODE USB Video for your armrest USB port. Watch the WHOLE video to find out. The COMBOX DIY and link where you can order it is in the description.
