RAM 1500 EcoDiesel vs HEMI | Is the Diesel option WORTH the Extra Cost 💰💰 *Diesel Mechanic Reviews*

  • I review a 2022 RAM 1500 EcoDiesel and a RAM 1500 5.7L Hemi and compare the two engines as a Licensed Diesel Mechanic to see if the extra cost of the Diesel option is worth you buying it. I break down the fuel economy of both the EcoDiesel and the 5.7L Hemi, factoring the extra cost of maintenance and DEF to give you guys the truth about this engine is cheaper to own.
    I hope everyone is having a good weekend! After comparing the 6.7 Cummins to the 6.4 Hemi last week. I figured this would be another awesome comparison.
    I use the EPA combined fuel efficiency rating to get a good comparison of both the ecodiesel and the 5.7 hemi. turns out the ecodiesel is 47% more efficient but factoring in that the price of diesel is 30% more expensive the ecodiesel comes away with only 17% more efficient.
    we also factor in maintenance costs and that also hurts the ecodiesel as a diesel engines maintenance costs are always more expensive.
    lastely we look at the cost of emissions and that really puts the ecodiesel overboard as it would take almost 1 million km to break even with the initial cost of the diesel engine vs the gas option.
    I also personally as a licensed Diesel Mechanic think the Eco diesel is a bad engine. even if it truly turned out to be more cost effective I still wouldn't buy it. lesson learned here is buy the 5.7 hemi and you won't be disappointed

    I love my 2021 RAM ED. I travel 900 miles on a single 33 gallon tank without looking for a next gas station as I am used to do when I hade 24 gallon tank and V8 GMC sierra. Plus the diesel doesn’t shift as often as gas one. It’s not about money saving it’s about different experience

    I recently purchased a 2018 Ecodiesel Outdoorsman to replace my old 2007 Hemi TRX4. Even with a 3 year bumper to bumper warranty it still came out about C$5k cheaper than the equivalent Hemi and it averages 10.9L/100km so far with my day to day use cases (my Hemi averaged about 20L/100km under the same conditions) so I'm pretty pleased with it I'm figuring if anything goes bad in the next 3 years it's Chrysler's problem and I can always flip it afterwards if it ends up not being reliable. Anyway thanks for your videos I watched a whole bunch of them before I bought the truck so I can't say I wasn't buying knowing full well what I was getting into thanks to you :) Cheers!

The MPG was attractive but I did some research including here and decided to avoid that engine, especially since I was buying used and not brand new with warranty. Again, good info.

    With respect, I think you made some great points but missed a bunch as well. You mentioned the ED repairs, but what about the hemi manifolds warping, and the hemi tick (lifter failure)? I spend a lot of time on the ram forums, and guys are spending $2000 to $4000 to replace their cams/lifters. What about resale value? You spend more for the ED, but after 5 years your ED may be worth $2000 more than an equivalent hemi. You mentioned the ED can't tow as much, but the towing is still different; the ED feels stronger when pulling 0 to 8000 pounds, because of the typical boosted/diesel torque curve. Less downshifts, less "lugging", it just feels stronger, the hemi you need to wind up and rev to 4000+ rpms to get full power which gives it that weaker feeling even though when both engines are running flat out the Hemi does tow more. Etc etc. I might have missed it in your cummins video, but I don't think you mentioned resale value there either which after 5 years, still returns over half the cost of your diesel purchase back to you. The ED is in the 5th gen is a pretty significant change over the ED in the 4th gen, supposedly they fixed some of the flaws and user complaints on the new ED are minimal. But I totally agree with your ED analysis, city usage, light duty etc. I just think in terms of pure cost/performance, some important bits were left out.

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  Рік тому +4

      Agreed I did not touch on the hemi lifter failure and that usually runs about 5k in cost to repair. the manifold leaks I guess you could count but they don't harm the engine and they certainly don't stop you from driving. I guess the reason I didn't include them is because they are repairs but usually a 1 time repair over the lifetime. and I think the number of lifter failures is overblown I think I read the failure rate is like less then 0.1% of trucks. but who knows that's coming from RAM lol
      Whereas the aftertreatment cost of repairs could be endless over the lifetime of the vehicle. there are about a dozen sensors in the aftertreatment system all of which will most likely fail at some point. for example a nox sensor costs around 1500 bucks. and you have an inlet nox and outlet nox sensor. we usually change those like candy, they are always failing. so you add in labor time your looking at a good chunk of money just to change a failed sensor. DPF filters can be upwards of like 4K. so you clog a DPF and ruin a couple sensors you could be looking at some big money. and there's no reason why it won't happen again a few years later with these emission systems.
      as far are resale value, Yes the Cummins will 100% maintain it's value better then gas. but I'm not so sure with the Eco diesel. I mean maybe, I honestly don't know but I would be cautious thinking the Eco diesel won't depreciate as fast. I think alot of people understand they are not the most reliable engines at this point whereas the cummins is clearly known for its reliability.
      All valid points! I just thought it would be an interesting comparison.

      Bro I just sold my 2011 hemi, 194k and the tick started years ago but finally quit on me this week. (Dec 23) the lifters needed replaced and it wasn't worth the cost. I just bought a ED today and I'm excited to see how it works out. I loved my hemi and I might go back to it one day but with that engine tick and lifter failure I would only buy brand new because that issue can surface with in the first 5 years of owning the vehicle

    Having towed with a 5.7 3/4 ton and a 1500 ecodiesel. I will say the ecodiesel even though it's a lighter truck pulls a lot better. I'm going to say torque band qmf 8 speed trans. Is the reason. Everything between 3000 pound box trailer to a 9000 lb excavator and trailer. I don't miss the Hemi roaring along at 4-5000 rpm to get up the mid grades in my area
    I average 25-26 mpg empty in the eco 80% hwy miles. When pulling I'll get 14-17 compared to 14 hwy empty 8-10 towing in the Hemi.
    Just turned 160,000 on the eco no major mechanical problems. Just normal maintinence and a few emissions recalls etc.
    It does great for a light duty diesel.
    Having said that. If I wasn't logging 20-30,000 miles a year with 1/3 of them towing I'd probably get another gasser.

Eco diesel would have to average 30.4 just to break even on fuel cost, then figure oil and filter costs and fuel filter costs. You have to tow alot to justify the Eco and might as well jump to cummins at that point.

    Other things to also add in is with the hemi you would fill up let’s say 100 times but with eco-diesel you would fill up 60 times. 40% less fill up more or less. Then you have longer range which is vastly more. Then you don’t have to spend money on rearing if you run bigger tires because it has so much lower and torque. And finally every penny you pay upfront for the extra cost of diesel you get back all of it and more in some cases for resale value people paid crazy money to buy a used diesel.

      @@TheGettyAdventures I don't agree, but that's OK. I have towed 8K+ lbs with both trucks, having owned both. The Hemi will pull hills but it SCREAMS - 5000 RPM pull - whereas the Ecodiesel just CHUGS up the hills -- 2500 RPM pull. The towing experience is much better and quieter with the Ecodiesel. I have 20K miles on my 2022 Ram Longhorn ED and 0 issues so far. I also had a 2014 Ram Hemi that I ran to 156K before it was totaled by another driver and I had 0 issues with it too. Ram builds great trucks. One suggestion that helped me on both trucks: get the 3.92 rear gear. With the 8 speed transmission, the real world difference in fuel economy is maybe 1 MPG, but the driving and towing experience is VASTLY superior with the deeper rear gears.

  • @InLineDiesel6
    @InLineDiesel6 Рік тому +4

    The ED is not $4,900 more, it is a $2,200 option over the Hemi. Since the trim you used as an example, a Rebel, comes standard with a V6 gasser, the cost to upgrade to the Hemi is $2,795, the ED adds an additional $2,200 over the Hemi option. If you want accuate numbers comparing the ED to the Hemi, redo the math using $2,200 as the ED cost.
    Your personal opinions of the ED now that the Gen 3 has been out for a few years is very outdated. Perhaps you could benifit from research.
    As far as the MPGs you indicated you got, I have very different numbers. My 2013 Hemi averaged 17.2, my 2022 ED averages 28.6, both in mixed driving.

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  Рік тому +1

      Like I mentioned in the video. In my location the ONLY trim you can get an Eco diesel right now is the Rebel and above. There are screen shots, watch the video again, it's 3,900 dollars plus tax plus financing brings you to 4,900 dollars over the hemi. In the US or other location it may be different.
      But like even if we took the 2,200 dollars, with tax you're looking at $2,500. without even financing costs you would have to drive 500,000km or 310,000 miles. which I mean I doubt most rams will make.
      As far as mpg I used the EPA Rated combined advertised mileage that RAM by Law has to provide. I figured that would be the fairest MPG comparison. If you don't agree then complain to them. But also common, a 2013 ram compared to a 2022. I imagine your 2013 hemi had the 6 speed with 3.55 gears probably no MDS either. whereas your 2022 has an 8 speed transmission with 3.21 gears. makes a large different. the gearing alone probably changes the mpg by 1-2.
      As far as my personal opinion I mean I'm only a licensed diesel mechanic lol I just work on diesel engine 8 hours a day/ 5 days a week. All you need to know is magically RAM is discontinuing the Eco diesel after 2023. They finally realized it was so bad they couldn't save it. 3 generation of engines in 6 years. Garbage. the Hemi is still on the same generation of engine since 2008 with no changes in sight.
      I'm sorry the salesman sold you a bill of goods but there's a reason why ram is canning this engine and it's not because it was too reliable.

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  Рік тому

      Final point. the Eco diesel engine is literally on back order because there is so much demand for them when the factory Eco diesel blows up. My own father in law was towing with the Eco diesel last year, blew up randomly on the highway. I had to come out and tow his trailer the rest of the way home. $14,000 + labor is what it would of cost him to replace the engine. he bought a new truck with a hemi in it.

    I would recommend that you remove the extra $500 cost for financing the Ecodiesel engine, as some of us pay cash for their trucks and don't have this extra cost. Or, maybe you could do it both ways.

      I would say it depends on what you want out of a truck. if your main concern is fuel economy and speed then ya 3.5 is the way to go. but if you want something reliable the hemi is a better option. it's not perfect but the 3.5 seems to run into a lot more issues whereas the v8 is just a simpler engine and has less things to go wrong over the lifetime of the truck.

      @@TheGettyAdventures normally I lease my trucks my current 19 f150 has the 3.5 and 63500kms on it the buyout is 34000. I've started a new job that has me traveling an average of 40-50000km per year mostly highway and 10% towing, so leasing the next truck is out. With interest rates being what they are these days it make more financial sense to me to buy my current truck out at 7.49% for a $34000 loan instead of a 5.99% $65000+ loan. but I question the eco-boost as the the kms start getting above 200000 one turbo failure will eat up the bulk of the interest savings buying the 19 out of its lease. What is your experience with the 4gen rams up to 250-300k in terms of maintenance?

    Please redo these figures without taxing the Ecodiesel twice, nunerous times. Plus, i have owned and towed with the Hemi and ED and can tell you that the ED tows the SAME weight much easier. It uses its torque to go up hills at maybe 3500-4000 RPM whereas the Hemi is SCREAMING up the hill at 5000-5500 ROM.

  • @scottandrews4822
    @scottandrews4822 10 місяців тому

    Wait - you're double taxing the ED engine. You added the tax at first and then you added it to the truck and taxed the whole amount again. I would recommend that you tax the engine as the whole package only and not individually. It's kind of making the diesel engine more expensive than it really is.

    If your truck lasts only 120k miles, you're doing a poor job with maintenance. Plus, you're saying some BAD THINGS about the ED. DOES THIS INCLUDE THE NEW 3RD GENERATION ECODIESEL? THEY HAVE MADE NUMEROUS CHANGES OVER THE EARLUER ONES. I have a 2022 Ecodiesel with 53K miles on it and have had ZERO issues with it.
    It seems like you're looking at the OLDER GENERATION ECODIESEL engines and not the THIRD GENERATION engines, where numerous changes were made. I feel that you were not fair to the ED engine, as you talked about the OLD GENERATION of it.
    Like i said, I have a 2022 Ram Longhorn with the Ecodiesel. I routinely get 27 HIGHWAY MPG and have had ZERO issues in 53K miles. Yes, a lot of my driving is on the highway, which probably helps me from having emission related issues. But, I have owned both the Hemi and the Ecodiesel. The ED tows better and gets much better fuel economy with great overall performance. The Hemi is a littke faster 0-60 and sounds great. I have a 3.92 gear in my ED truck, which matched the Hemi. I did this to help with both trucks' acceleration, which it did. Anyway, I have had great luck with Ram trucks in general. To bash the OLDER generation Ecodiesel [ED] motor and to tax it twice and then say it's problematic, when you're not using the 3rd gen engine, and say it's more exoensive, when you taxed it twice, is simply not a good comparison, in my mind.

    To be honest its seems like a pointless comparison. Like comparing mittens and sun burn lotion. I mean they both are for taking care of your body right? No you are missing the point. One is for the cold one is for the heat. This sun burn lotion isn't keeping my hands warm so the mittens are better and a better value. STFU your stupid says the guys who is bright red from sun burn these mittens are not helping me at all.
    For people who have work loads and duty cycles that benefit from the strengths of diesel hands down want a diesel for the right reasons. Like long run times big miles heavy daily towing. Relative to truck size naturally ie 1/2 ton or HD. People who have a short commute, need a people hauler, grocery getter, but also need a bed will benefit most from the small gas Pentastar. People who want a more rounded capability maybe also want a vehicle that is quick or fast and appreciate the sound feel or drive characteristics of the v8 will want and benefit from the larger gas Hemi. Now pretty much everyone can pick one that will fit their needs. Who knows why some pay extra to get a diesel and have zero need for it. Maybe they just like the drive characteristics or lord knows what. Ever see the guy who buy shoes 4 sizes too big for his feet. It doesn't benefit him physically but perhaps psychologically.
    On top of that even the fuel consumption cost comparison you did is wrong from the get go. You compare the Ecodiesel cost, fuel cost and usage example to that of the Hemi. But you use the Ecodiesel upcharge cost against that of the Pentastar and not the cost of the Hemi. So even the results you post or conclusion you reach were doomed before you started. On top of that there was no comparison of fuel consumption towing a trailer. All of it is bad premise.
    On a side note The Ecodiesel Hemi & Pentastar are all doomed on a short horizon. The Ecodiesel was just picked first for Rams own reasons. Instead of getting 3 engines to choose from your alternate of choice is going to be 3 versions of the same 3.0 liter 6 cylinder gas motor ie the The Hurricane. I believe you will get to pick from a single turbo, a twin turbo HO, and one that adds a battery & electric motor. An economical win for the bean counters at least theoretically on paper and a stave off to our out of control overreaching government.
