    How does the addition of a muffler lead to an increase in hp?

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 років тому +3

      +Jamie Willetts I must admit I don't really understand how it works, engines are a bit of a black box to me, maybe something to do with the backpressure it produces.

    • @avsforthecup74
      @avsforthecup74 7 років тому +4

      Right, I think it's referred to harmonic scavenging? You can then refine it with exhaust header form/length, cam profile, and back pressure?

    • @singleturbosupra7951
      @singleturbosupra7951 7 років тому +1

      Jamie Willetts This is just a guess, but the reason is probably because it's the type of muffler with straight pipe that has holes in it that lead to muffling material. This means there's less air-to-metal contact and more air-to-air contact in the exhaust pipe. This reduces friction which in turn increase flow speed.
      Hope you understand my explanation.

      Thanks. It's in the works but it's a massive job, maybe bigger than the body. May or may not work out, we shall see.

    good video. glad ya got it tuned. Even if it got a few more horsepower it's still a successful step.

      Thanks, yes it's much closer to the front now in terms of power which is great.

    This thing would be a track monster with just 200 hp. Its already good as is but man id like to make one of these cars, but powered by a subaru engine.

    Have I missed the video where you talk about the engine? I've watched quite a few of this series now and can't see anything about it.

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 років тому +1

      No, I've not done a video on it though. There's not much for me to say honestly, I've left the engine to others who know more than I do.

      ThomsenMotorsport Alright thanks! I've seen in one of the other videos it's air cooled, maybe it's a flat 4? I'm not sure. Thank you for the quick reply, and for making an interesting series of videos!

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 років тому +8

      Thanks. That's right, it's an air cooled flat four, the 1600cc engine from a Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle.

    I heard you say he checked the valves during this. These engines really need to be checked ice cold as the clearances change a surprising amount when warm. It might be a good idea to redo them cold just to make sure they are good.

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 років тому

      Wouldn't you want to do it warm as that's when the tolerances would be where they would be running? If you set it cold then you're setting it for a condition that it won't be in during a race.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC 7 років тому

      ThomsenMotorsport well the clearance specs given by VW back in the day are specified to be done cold. Most manufacturers specify cold because "hot" is hard to achieve consistently.
      If they were set not cold chances are they are too loose. That being said some old timers set them looser than specified.

    • @nonyadamnbusiness9887
      @nonyadamnbusiness9887 7 років тому

      I think VW specified cold because, like you say, air cooled engines don't run at a consistent temperature. But that's a safety setting for longevity. If you're racing to win, you should know what temperature you're running and set minimum clearance. If you overheat and burn a valve, that's just part of racing.

      +Mark Horan for me a lot was down to getting the jetting/timing/rocker gaps correct, stuff most Vee people probably know but that I'm still learning. He also a list of things to buy, stuff around the ignition and timing. I'm lucky to have started with a good engine so it was more about optimising how it runs. I was a bit lost though before he helped me, it was a valuable time I spent there.

    Why not use 2 carburators and ethanol like we use here in Brazil. My engine has 94hp, but some other guys can reach over 110hp.

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 років тому

      The configuration of my engine is dictated by the class rules. It's unlikely the category would make a change like allowing two carburetors (or any other change to the engine) without a good reason, improved parity between competitors or improving parts supply for instance. Making the cars faster isn't enough of a justification, the cars should all theoretically be the same speed so whether they are all a bit faster or slower won't make much of a difference to the racing.

    • @carlossze
      @carlossze 7 років тому

      I understand... Here in Brazil are the same thing. Whats the carburetor size rule? Also the camshaft needs to be std?
      I just watched your last video and I had a similar rear brake failure, it is very comom.

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 років тому

      The max carburetor size is 28.1 and we must use a restrictor plate for parity purposes. The camshaft is a specific aftermarket component for our category.
      Talking to other competitors it does sound like that rear brake issue is fairly common here as well. Now I know hopefully I can prevent it in future.

      ye, 68, but for the light weight of the car and the class he's gonna race is enough, that's why there are formula 1, formula 2 and so on with limitations, to be fair for all (mostly), just respect his work, he could put a 800hp engine, but he wants to stay withing his race limitations, otherwise he would be dropped of for cheating and lose all his work
