I love how the main melody of "Grimoire of Alice" kicks in at the exact moment she starts shooting her danmaku. Perfect timing and build-up to it, so satisfying

I remember reading somewhere that ZUN wasn't sure if he was going to keep going after Mystic Square; the tone and effort of really the entire game, but especially the music, feels like he was trying to go out with his best. (Thankfully, it didn't end up being the end of Touhou, but it still was the end of an era.)

I just noticed that the randomness of the final pattern isn't intended; Alice is spawning more bullets than the game can handle. You can see that at the very beginning, Alice shoots ten streams of bullets in a spiral like she does at the end, but it very quickly fades away for a more random pattern. I'm guessing this is also why one wave is much denser than the other, since maybe that's the wave in the beginning of memory that gets overwritten by new bullets? And you can see that the randomness fades as the spell gets faster because when the bullets are faster, they spend less time on the screen. As a result, the fire rate needs to increase to keep the bullet count at max, because bullets spend less time on screen. I wonder if this is intentional? Hell, I'd imagine ZUN spent a lot of time trying to fix it, or maybe he just decided he was cool with it.

And you can see that ZUN calls back to the PC-98 games with the Windows games and Spellcards, for instance, the attack at 4:22 is almost identical to Sanae's card "Sea Opening 'The Day the Sea Split'". The music is incredible. Grimoire of Alice is such a badass theme for a character that does not receive much attention. It's a perfect way to end an era.
According to the the omake Alice's final spellcard is called Yellow Magic [ Ultimate Emission (Bwahaha) ] Err, yeah, the kanji for "Laugh" is in there. I presume ZUN was laughing at us, not with us...
Why did ZUN make it so that the background works against the player in Mystic Square during some of the hardest boss fights? I can barely dodge some of the spells normally, but then the background starts glowing and flashing, and my eyes start to twitch and cry, and then I have to blink, and then it's all over.
Curvy laser was first used by Yuki, and later Shinki. Alice learned it, then Letty brought it back. Merlin made it hell, Yuyuko kills you with it, and Shou made it famous.

surely Alice is one of Gensoukyou's top brass. holding back her power even if it means losing simply because she prefers winning by strategy instead of brute force... now that's some very strong pride.
Actually she's refusing to use the grimoire because of the L she took here despite how powerful it was supposed to make her. I think Yuka beating her was canon. And she tants her for "trying to beat her with her nose stuck in a book." Basically the power she is holding back is the power in the Grimoire and Alice is trying to become powerful without it tho as you know the fighting style she developed is more based on skill then sheer power (If she was genuinely planning on using the grimoire in the future she would need it) but Alice is afraid that if she opens the grimoire again she will get rekted again and thus have made no progress and will have nothing to live for. Its kind of similar to how Darth Vader is and is really intresting. I don't actually think she will ever be brave enough to open the grimoire again (not that she really needs to) so ironically her current power is basically her full power.

Emishimaru - Sama same Alice Margatroid, different time-line. Just have in mind that PC-98 and Windows events doesn't overlap one each other and from all the old cast, just Reimu, Marisa, Yuuka and Alice were the ones that repeated in Windows games.
I fail just before the burritos, and I know I will never be able to beat Alice. It's too much difficult. But what's nice with this extra stage is that after I fail zun is not mean in his comments when the score board appears and even say good things instead of wanting me to feel like shit as usal like after normal stages. :/
touhou 4 , 5 is best in all games series bullet hells, but it is my opinion, no shit small hitbox, no forcefuly predicted patterns, and in end hellish feeling you beat really strong foes.
Noone defeats Touhou Bosses "easily". They train it. Just die a bunch of times and a bunch of times and as the time goes on it gets easier as you get more training
this is her first encounter after turning into a youkai... she's much more interested in strategy and hates having to win a fight from sheer overwhelming power, she always holds back even if it means losing. seeing this, it makes me wonder... just how powerful Alice could be..? maybe coming in second after the sage of Gensokyo, or perhaps she isn't top only because of holding back..?
In Soew you have a bigger hitbox and you can't focus,but Rika's pattern is way easier than Alice's pattern.When you are used to this no focus and bigger hitbox thing,the game gets easy.

@0ctopusComp1etely I dont think it was on purpose, he just wasnt that good at that back then, background art has really in Touhou, some of it was due to better technology surely, but I think ZUN too became better at it, making more beautifl art and making them fit more with the patterns in the screen.

This game has amazing music. It's even surprising how it sounds so much similar to the Genesis music, because it's for the PC-98.

I fail just before the burritos, and I know I will never be able to beat Alice. It's too much difficult.
But what's nice with this extra stage is that after I fail zun is not mean in his comments when the score board appears and even say good things instead of wanting me to feel like shit as usal like after normal stages.

At least the charging up effect, both character's hair, point items, hexagrams, and the HUD weren't blue. Mostly.

Wow this is probably the hardest PC-98 extra.
touhou 4 , 5 is best in all games series bullet hells, but it is my opinion, no shit small hitbox, no forcefuly predicted patterns, and in end hellish feeling you beat really strong foes.

Noone defeats Touhou Bosses "easily". They train it. Just die a bunch of times and a bunch of times and as the time goes on it gets easier as you get more training

this is her first encounter after turning into a youkai... she's much more interested in strategy and hates having to win a fight from sheer overwhelming power, she always holds back even if it means losing. seeing this, it makes me wonder... just how powerful Alice could be..? maybe coming in second after the sage of Gensokyo, or perhaps she isn't top only because of holding back..?

In Soew you have a bigger hitbox and you can't focus,but Rika's pattern is way easier than Alice's pattern.When you are used to this no focus and bigger hitbox thing,the game gets easy.
Anyone who has epilepsy should stay away from Touhou pc-98. Alice's last spell is a prime example of that.

I dont think it was on purpose, he just wasnt that good at that back then, background art has really in Touhou, some of it was due to better technology surely, but I think ZUN too became better at it, making more beautifl art and making them fit more with the patterns in the screen.
