Highly Responsive to Prayers !
Lunatic 1 CC of course but with 3 lives to start, otherwise it's not funny ~

Well ... the lunatic is way way harder than hard mode because cards which you hit with hakurei ball fires " suicid bullets " and sometimes you can be screwed like an idiot... Sure you can hit the bullets but the timing is kinda tight. It is more safe to avoid them or use a bomb.
When you get hit, you loose a life ( captain obvious here ! ) but you gain a bomb. The best advice I can give you is : Use your bombs during stages only and don't use them against boss because you gain a lot of lives by scoring. ( often 1 life per bomb ) ( sometimes 0 or 2 ).
Like that, you always have at least 5 lives at the start of a boss.
At the end of the battle, if you have lost a lot of lives, and you have 5 bombs, use 1 bomb per stage and you reach the next boss with 5 lives again ...
Useless to say that the hardest part is the bosses.
Some patterns are really hard and you have to learn them like if your were the programmer :/
The legend of Kaze (heaven mode stage 15~19 and Kongara's theme (final hell boss ) are really great.

I always die more to the Ying Yang Orb than to the actual bullets.
Reasons why you die, you either get hit by the ball or you get hit trying to avoid the ball.

Seeing the first form of Touhou gives me anxiety, somehow it's unsettling watching the Armpits Miko's juggling a Yin-Yang orb just to flip those cards... Man, I should stay around Bullet Hell Shooter. This is just hard for me!

Dude what the heck this looks so entertaining, I've always thought this was boring because i knew it wasn't a bullet hell but this is worth a try

but if u have short fuse, I don't reccomend play this.... like that floaty yinyang orb are actually... can kill u.... A LOT

Mostly a case of early installment weirdness.
On a similar note, did you know that Puyo Puyo is actually a spinoff from a series of JRPGs? Puyos were a type of enemy in the game that served as a basic "slime" enemy (their name even translates as the sound of jiggling)
the first 3 games (Highly Responsive to Prayers, Story of Eastern Wonderland, and Phantasmagoria of Dimentional Dream) were all pretty different from each other and all released on the exact same day. if I had to guess how they got to the bullet hell games they are now I'd say that perhaps Touhou 2 was simply the most popular one. Touhou 3 got a successor in Touhou 9 and thankfully we've never had something like Touhou 1 released again (even on the easier difficulties Touhou 1 is nothing but pain and suffering)
ZUN said that he made touhou a bullet hell because of arcade bullet hell shooters. DoDonPachi is an example.

@@marx4538 eh.... I very much disagree. I find that the only Touhou games that even get close to 1 in terms of raw frustration are 12 and 15 but at least I find those games a fun kind of frustrating (like Dark Souls or Elden Ring) compared to 1 which I'd consider to just be an utter slog to play. personally I feel like the series has done really well after 10. I really love 11, 14, 16, 17 and 18 (I'll admit that I'm not overly fond of 12, 13, and 15).
overall I'd say the series has always had it's hits (2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 14, 16, 18) and misses (1, 3, 9, 12, 13, 15) but there's no specific point where it's gone downhill.

to me the reasonably sized hit boxes for the bosses is the most shocking part compaired to the games that came after where you just needed to get inside their field
imagine how hard the games would be now if the bosses only had one small vulnerable spit
It would probably make high spread shot types less effective but other than that I don't think things would change much
@@TheKing-kd9li you would need to ficus your aim that takes more concentration with a smaller target unless you can somehow bomb spam the whole fight I;d say it would make things more difficult for everyone
@@jeweltara I agree that it will take more effort to hit but the boss sprites in the games after this are much smaller so the shrunken hitbox would only affect it a little compared to how noticeable it is here. It would probably make people prefer homing more though
@@TheKing-kd9li true if it was not for having to dodge all the bullet patterns I would agree with you however a single point on a normal sized character may seem simple I imagine when you factor in the fact most characters eat bullets for breakfast even in the beginning small tweeks can lead to alot of lost lives and probably lost sanity too.
I'm surprised this game has never made it into the mainstream speedrunning community, yeah there isn't massive time skips, it'd make for the most interesting speedrun out of all the main line games though, i'm sure there'd be a lot of weird strategies.
Because the mechanics are annoying af. I'd rather k*ll myself then try to speedrun this game. It was already annoying having to beat it two times for two endings but speedruning would require a lot of replays which no one sane (except I wanna be the guy fans) would wanna go through.

But other than that, I LOVE the kikuri boss fight(and the music) I think I have a new favorite touhou boss from the PC-98 era

reasons i like touhou 1:
-the game is abandonware so private it is okay

As someone who played the game, the real final boss of Hell route is Kikuri, cause Konngara is such a joke compared to Sariel and the Stage 15 bosses. Plus worst case scenario you can just bomb your way through her (unless you're doing a no miss no bomb; in which case, good fucking luck lmao).
