jicama, the crunchiness, the texture the taste..i just love it
Chef Jon I know you dressed this right before serving and recommend immediate consumption, but this coleslaw is amazing the next morning. It was good yesterday but since it marinaded its uber delicious. Also added 1/2 tablespoon of Dijon mustard to the dressing. Gave it a little oomph.
love this recipe... made it at my restaurant in Vietnam as a side dish with smoked ribs. delicious
Mouth-watering, as usual. The cabbage slaw looks great, too!
i always get excited when i eat vegatable slaw, expessially when mom makes one, love it!
Sigh. You are so hilarious. Love your videos. Straightforward, entertaining and delicious! I've despised most coleslaws I've encountered--KFC & diner style fare-- but this sounds really fresh and yummy.
I modified this recipe for a BBQ by forgoing the jicama, using a whole cabbage, green Tabasco as the hot sauce, and added crushed pineapple. It had such a wonderful, tropical flavor
I think I may steal that idea. Thanks.
I love love love Jicama! So delicious plain too!
texturally thrilling..crunchy..cool..crisp..Just so gOOd...
i am sold. definitely making it for the potluck
--a veggie murderer
Fuji apples are nature's candy..... I luv them!!!
"Where my veggie murderers at?" CLASSIC CHEF JOHN.
@feliadmario I was thinking the same thing! normaly in Mexico you eat jicama with lime juice and some sort of chili powder and its sooo good the sweet, sour and hot make a fiesta in your mouth makes me feel happy just thinking about this. But I do think in Asia its considered a vegetable not a 100% sure dough
This salad looks FANTASTIC! I can't wait to try it!
I made this yesterday, with less hot sauce. I found it too sweet and it needed some zing so I added a lot of fresh lemon juice and salt and pepper. It was ok, I kind of regretted using the pineapple juice, but today it tastes really good, the flavours had to marinate together I guess. Next time I'll leave out the sugar, not needed (I used honey), the pineapple makes it plenty sweet. I guess I wasn't looking for something so sweet for coleslaw.
I cant wait to try this!! Its looks and sounds soooo yummy!! Thank you for sharing!!
The perfect accompaniment to my wife's Potato Salad (apple chunks are the secret) Cannot wait to try this one....TY Chef!
You pronounce it perfectly!!! jicama!
we call those Singkamas in my country. good thing it's in season now. i'm gonna try this tomorrow.
@Cabsinthehouse you could try diakon (like a white carrot), radishes, or broccoli slaw (precut bagged variety). Use any mild crunchy substitute.
The proper pronunciation is closer to what you actually said--it is HEE.cah.mah since it comes from Spanish. Your recipe sounds delish! I absolutely love the idea of mixing apple and jicama with hot peppers to get that nice heat/sweet and tangy flavor oppositio. Yum!
I love the way you LOVE THE FOOD bro!
This looks yummy, and now I know what I can do with a jicama.
this looks sooo yummy! My Ma will sometimes make Jicama french fries... those are good too
texturally thrilling
Not a big coleslaw fan but this one had my mouth watering!
Good job, I will try it out.
Lol'd at "JAIKAMA" hahaha
This looks scrumptious-diddley-umptious.. The last time I got excited by a vegi slaw was when I tasted the Asian Slaw at a ClaimJumpers dining room here in Vegas...Soooo good. Would love to know how that stuff gets put together.
Definitly gonna try this Jicama-Apple Slaw very soon
love the recipe..that pink sauce, wonderful..Just because I was wondering the other day what sweet and spicy things do well together.. you have to rate the sauce..on a personal note.. sticky tab thingy
@Cabsinthehouse I used sweet potatoes instead .... I don't have jicama out here either.. I live in the middle of nowhere.. it turned out great !
Chef john your vids are great (Y)
I'm Mexican and you said it right, jicama is great to eat just with lemon and salt.
D: "Mexican potato" ? BLASPHEMY!!!!
its an awesome vegetable more deserving than that. Good call, Chef John!!! *salute*
@aliceihm It has the exact same calories as your dressing. btw, you do realize we need more than one salad dressing, right?
Made this tonight - good stuff. Didnt have pineapple juice, so substituted orange juice. Keep in mind this recipie makes over 10 servings...might want to half it (or more).
You are an inspiration!
OMG! I'm ready to eat that dressing on toast. It would be great on any salad. But I'm going to try it on a bag of cabbage slaw tomorrow.
@babygyalk : Jicama grows in tropical places. It's a vegetable that's very popular in Asia. It's crunchy and sweet like an apple. Since you live in England, you can check out the Asian markets that specializes in Asian foods. They should have jicama.
I love it I will try it in my weekend !!!
@BloodyGaaraOfSand let's see... wasabi is mainly wasabi root (or in the US usually dyed horseradish), tabasco is mainly vinegar, and sriracha is mainly chiles. what do you think would be the best.
That looks amazing. I've tried Jicama "Fries" and didn't like them, but i did like the raw jicama, so this looks, as i said, amazing
for us we pronounce it "Singkamas"its texture is similar to pears but more bland.we just ignore it here and let the pigs eat it..(what a waste).its a root crop i think..and thanks to you..i just discovered its perfect for salad...thanks.
Love from India😀
This looks beyond delicious!!!!!!....
This looks incredible. I would like to buy you a beer chef john.
IT IS JEEKAHMA!
Im mexican, you pronounced it perfectly
Looks good
dear John, the way you pronounce the word jícama the first time, is the correct way to do it, the second one is totally wrong...
and yes... mexican potato is worst descritption for jícamas, i love them, their peak season is winter time, case its when they are the more, juicy... in mexico, we eat them as a snack only with salt lemon juice and hot peper flakes.
I love your channel
Gaby
@babygyalk Why don't you grow some? Do I have to think of everything?
The pronunciation is He-Ka-Ma chef. I've never heard it being called a potato though haha. I just like eating it with a fruit salad with some lime, salt, and a Mexican chile powder (not the same as American) called Pico de Gallo. I tried recommending it to some people but some find it too starchy and ignore it's subtle sweetness. It pairs pretty well with some hot wings too.
You said Jicama perfect!! good for you taken from me it was perfect I am spanish...love rosemary
hm that must be delicious...tnx
I would substitute roasted, salted, sunflower seeds for the corn nut bits.
that looks soo good!!
@WombatRider Off-hand! Awesome!
In México, we call them "hee-ca-mas" just like you do, Chef John! I'm glad you keep the right name!
Its beautiful, but i have never seen Jicama here in england and i've got a feeling i would not find it no matter how hard i looked !!!!! So thx for sharing lol x
Jicama in the Philippines are called Singkamas :D :D Pinoys dip it in vinegar and it really tastes yummy :D
You've inspired me!
The use of corn nuts is a unique idea.
I love eating jicama. My mom would eat it like an apple :P Great recipe as always.
I will be using this slaw on my pulled pork sandwiches this summer. Nice recipe. I have broken so many teeth on those corn nuts I think I'll skip them.
In the Philippines We call Jicamas, "Singkamas" :D which we soak in cane vinegar and spice with chili peppers :D
@WombatRider Not bad.
How could anything with corn nuts not be the best thing ever?!
Yes indeed. I use a Coffee Grinder, it makes a nice flavorful grind that doesn't break teeth...I used Corn Nuts for Fried Chicken (mixed with the seasoned flour) and it was awesome...I also ground up Special K cereal for the Cook Out as well... BOTH got rave reviews for the Taste AND Texture..cooking can really open up YOUR creativity.
Little tip, if you want to make it a liter coleslaw, you can use non flavored yogurt instead of mayo.
Corn nuts are soooo gooooooood....
@tnichlsn
I don't think he meant hot pink as in magenta, but more of a spicy dressing with a pink hue.
You're pronunciation
is correct : He-ka-ma.
Thank you for this delicious recipe..
Granny Smith apples sound like they would bring a nice sour/sweet taste!
Annie Gibson that's exactly what I was thinking. Plus substitute the corn nuts for pine nuts
Looks good!
several of you said it like a radish.... yeah it's true, the texture likely a radish but harder and denser. So crunchy :D
veggie murderer right here ;D great recipe, thanks a million!
@Cabsinthehouse Never had jicama, but what he described reminds me of water chestnuts?
I've never seen jicama here in Beijing, but I'm going to try it with kohlrabi
@Ma9bqr45 Perhaps you can just use more apples, or add julienned pears. Water chestnuts would be a good substitute, too, but just make sure you drain them well.
I would add some cooked cold shrimp delicious, I think CPK has it on their menu
i'm gonna be making this every weekend. :D YUM!!!!
@aliceihm I'd imagine that the pineapple juice lightens up the dressing in taste and texture. Additionally, if you research the nutritional content of mayo vs. EVOO, you'd find that they'd be about equal in calories (100 cal for mayo vs. 119 cal for EVOO) per serving size (1 tbsp) with the primary difference in that EVOO has less sodium and is higher in healthy unsaturated fats. It's popular misconception that mayo is evil but it really isn't provided you enjoy it in moderation.
@foodwishes What could you use instead of the jicama? there is not much food variety in spain like in the US or the UK
Does anyone else think he sounds kind of like Seth Rogen? I think picturing Seth Rogen narrate these recipes gives them a whole new level of awesome.
@10idol Singkamas is Jicama
we call those Jicama - SINGKAMAS (Sing-Ka-Mas) in Filipino language. i love those things... bacon bits would be pretty cool too but i bet it would be a bit salty.
Sounds good. Thanks for sharing..
Jicama is very common in Asia. but not celery root...We use it to braise with dried small prawns, and wrap with rice skin delicious
John, what's the going market exchange rate for Fingertips versus Vegetables? Do you know, off-hand?
wat else can we use the dressing with?
please help cause i dont have any jicama here
wat else can i use besides jicama
You are sooooooo AWESOME!!!!
Jicama with salt and lime. EHS BEST
! Yum all up
Awesome slaw :o)
Love it!
@CarlitzLuevanos
Mango sticky rice.
awesome dessert!
@babygyalk
try a very Asian grocery. I find them in Chinese and Vietnamese grogeries. They may not know what they are called in English, so use your visuals. good luck!
chef john! can you make eclairs? pleaseeeee
Thanks. Please Chef John add sometime some vegetarian recipes.
@yihanglee grow your own, do i have to think of everything?
at Indonesia we call it "Bengkuang"
that's tropical plant and also so yummy :D
@Cabsinthehouse hmmm maybe radish?
your pronunciation of Jícama is correct chef.
@aliceihm Rather than being a jerk, or bashing, spend a minute (takes less, actually) to do your homework. What do you think Mayo is made of?
