Didnt they actually do that with one of the animated movies? There are like a hundred of those things at this point so they've probably covered most of the ideas you can come up with.
Tired: making characters into edgy evil horror characters the second they get into the public domain. Wired: making characters canonically gay in whatever story you write them into when they go public domain where their og company would never have had the guts to.
