Los Angeles Times reporter Kevin Thomas interviews Satyajit Ray

- This is a video from my private collection that I had released on FaceBook 7 years ago!!! Pardon my bragging but I had to move heaven and earth to get it (and it is a long story for another day) and even the TV station where the interview took place circa 1977 did not have a copy and could not be bothered to look.
Ray is interviewed here by Los Angeles movie critic Kevin Thomas who does come up with some good questions even though he doesn't seem especially familiar with Ray's milieu. For my international friends I would like to point out that Ray was as far a cry from "Bollywood" as could be imagined.
First 2 minutes are a bit unstable but after that it is OK. I had to patch it together from a few different fragments and this was the best that could be done. I donated a copy to the Ray Archives in Santa Cruz and presented one to Sandip Ray.
Update: May 10, 2017: This video is starting to go viral on FaceBook. It is time for me to post it on UA-cam for reaching the widest possible audience. I am so happy and thankful to people who are sharing this and getting the word out. I shall deem my efforts fruitful. I do not own the copyright to video. Sharing it is for educational purposes. Yet another glimpse into the mind of this great artistic genius.
His demeanor, attitude, accent, articulation, his baritone voice and all his movies, legendary Ray
As others have commented, Mr. Ray was a beautifully articulate speaker, expressing modesty and great intelligence simultaneously. Kevin Thomas however reminds me of the famous Adagia 2302 of Desiderius Erasmus (incorrectly cited as an Icelandic proverb), "Every man enjoyeth the smell of his own farts". :)
He was 6'4 tall too & whatta manly voice
❤❤
@Skylar Warren took me one hour and in the end it didn't work at all.
A rarest of talents Mr Ray! Artist, director, musician, music director, painter, writer....India will never be able to replace such a talented man.
Francesco Calle de rivas calligrapher u missed
Francesco Calle de rivas polymath
True💯 ..but hardly any indians know him, his films are buried under heap of craps that india is producing by manipulating the art of cinema to provide cheap escapism...
He rightly said that indians are very backward and unsophisticated audience and we are still maintaining it😂
@@claustrophobic0015 😂😂🤣🤣
Cinematographer also
This is the perfect example of what we call the "voice of god" in dubbing industry. I am totally spellbound. Such clarity and depth in the vision as filmmaker. And the way he articulates it. Fantastic.
7 dislikes to a legend like him...... Time to leave this planet
They are idiots.
Wish I could get them out of this planet
14 now!! And I am quite sure that from which Country actually they belong to!!
May be they are just testing the dislike button lol
They are Dev mimi nusrats fan who disliked
Satyajit ray...swami vivekananda..rabindranath tagore... we bengalis are proud of such name. They have changed india forever.
And not to forget Legendary Kishore da, Hemanta da and Manna da!
Sujal Abhijit Biswas right
Didi?
@@samarjitmechie Satyajit Ray also known as Manik Da in Bengal ☺
...... Indians...
Real handsome man with great orating skills.
Right 100%
His charisma, his voice...omg nobody can be him
An Indian director speaking English without an indian accent and it's in the 70s.
What do you mean exactly with the english stuff, after watching this interview the only thing which intrests you is that he can speak english what a ******
sourav singh yeah idiots care only about language
Before we forgot our past all educated indian used speak in that acent only
He IS speaking with an accent, no language is 'without' accent. His accent is just one which we do not usually associate with "Indian English" in popular culture. :)
I'd say Satyajitbabu's accent here is closest to what is considered RP (Received Pronunciation)- a particular accent of English most associated with the upper classes in London, UK. And the interviewer's accent is somewhat American West Coast.
Woahh ... His voice 😍 & he was 6'4 tall , totally different...😻
Yes 👍👍👍
By the way, Sattyajit Ray's father Sukumar Ray is from Bangladesh. So basically He is a Bangladeshi. And actually His Father's house is near my house.

Satyajit Ray is something which the audience of Karn Johar, Ram Gopal Verma, Subhash Ghai etc will never understand!!!
THIS IS CALLED "" THE ULTIMATE PERSONALITY ""..
Ray what a man what dynamic personality
What an incredibly beautiful husky voice Ray was blessed with. I have listened to this interview a hundred times just to hear and enjoy its deep resonance
He has a voice of a bass/baritone. deep and smooth.
I wish Satyajit Ray would have been born in our times
I'm wondering whose Root Language is English.... This poor interviewer. I guess he simply mesmerised, spellbound with Mr. Ray's personality !
English is the root language of none of them. The interviewer is among the Americans who played a significant role in spoiling the language 'English'.
LEGEND.
Can listen to this man for hours.
এই যে আমি বাংলায় লিখলাম...
এখানেই গর্ব.. এখানেই অহংকার ❤️❤️
Such a knowledgeable, sophisticated and classy personality...... impeccable English...... is der anybody who can even come close to him today? Salute to u Mr Ray
🙏🙏🙏.
He's not full of himself like so many of our celebrities.
Satyajit Ray has been quite scathing in his disdain for commercial Indian movies, both in his interviews and movies, about how shallow and escapist they mostly are. Sadly, little has changed. Here we are in 2020, and you have most people on this comment thread commenting about more superfluous things like the clothes he wears, or the way he speaks, instead of engaging with the ideas he brings to the front. Stupidity is created as that is precisely what the audience craves.
I AGREE 😭
Dont blame kevin because satyajit is so serious while answering and so much cognizant on his subject ,the interviewer had no choice left with rather to get bamboozled and extremely flabbergasted
I don't know, but I always think that Satyajit Ray himself would have been the best "Feluda'' in his youth.
I completely agree with u ..he should have played the role of feluda
@@joykundu5272 he was a little bit taller than feluda. He was 6'4 but yeah I agree with you
I also think so...😂. May be he just wanted to focus in directing.
I am completely with you on this one....
I guess he made the character Feluda on his own personality..
He's so much larger than life. Satyajit gives a Ray of hope for serious Indian Filmmakers.
Can you help falling in love with this stalwart .. A genius in every sense of the word ..
As a Bengali postgrad studying at the University of Queensland and living among foreigners in Brisbane, I can't help but marvel at Ray's wanderlust as reflected in his Feluda writings. I am still devouring Ananda Publishers' Completed Feluda edition tomes here. And being devoted to auteurs like Fellini, Tarkovsky and Bergman, I feel very proud as a Bengali that Ray could his own niche among the masters of world cinema, which is a huge feat. His euphonious speech is another gift.
Thanks Mr Sanyal for posting this interview. It's a treat to see the Master talking about his film.
what a personality???.. really magnificent
One can distinctly see the interviewer fumbling and hesitating before this towering personality! Satyajit has every answer ready and the interviewer is yet to know Bengal. Bravo Maestro, what a strong personality you were!
Please, it is not the accent or voice, Satyajith is and was beyond and much much superior, higher than that, it is all about his humanity, compassion and understanding of nature within all beings , evolved BEING of our times. Missed him.👍💪💪💪❤💎👈
Totally agree

Thanking so much for taking the pain to retrieve this interview from the archives and sharing it with the world!
Interview after 'Distant Thunder' was aired on PBS in November 1978.
The personality , the confidence, the accent , the style ,a true Indian indeed .
Voice of Richard burton and wonderfully articulate,visionary.. this man was truly aware of struggles and dreams of the very poor and to think his from a very high society class family! Thanks for uploading this interview!
Our respected Manik da - - - to me he was perfection personified - - - in all his works

Before watching this I did not know more about Sattyajit Ray’s contribution. Thanks for uploading anyway.
Amazzing upload! wow
Hello Sir, first of all I would like to thank you for uploading this rare and valuable video. I love Satyajit Ray and have been a fan of his movies for many years. In fact his are the only Indian movies I watch. I would request that you keep putting up these videos if you happen to have more of it. Thank you.
thank you so much for sharing
The biggest problem, why good cenema don't get credit in this poor country, is shown in the comment section. Everyone is talking about how he speaks not what he speaks.
This should really be a top or pinned comment.
To get "Something out of nothing". Never has any director achieved this greater than master Satyajit Ray.
I worship your movies maestro. And I will watch them till the day I die. India's greatest artist.
Just amazing!Whenever I get the opportunity to see his films or interviews it becomes an overwhelming matter which really moves me inside out & just that thing,I think, happened here for the interviewer Mr. Thomas. He just got overwhelmed or little bit nervous to face a personality like Satyajit Ray!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😁😁😁😁😁
A true legend with great personality.

Satyajit's accend is so british. I didn't expected this before watching the video
This legendary man always make me proud to be a bengali!!!!
Indian
Likewise
Appreciate your effort to find out this rare video from archive.. It was a pleasure to watch the way Mr. Ray talked about his legendary movie during this interview.Seems like the interviewer , who was also a renowned film critic back in those days, gathered lot of knowledge about Indian cinemas from him.
Can you please tell me the name of the movie
What a personality! What a Class act!
Cool British-ish accent.
I'm currently researching about Satyajit Ray and this clip is a great collection for my work. I express my deepest gratitude to Anirudhho Sanyal for this video. I must it was completety unexpected for me.
His voice is so enticing. Truly a legend.

Distant Thunder was pure brilliance, pure film gold. Satyajit Ray was a blessing to the filming community and anybody that that likes films should give any of his films a look as I guarantee he will show via his films something you have not seen or felt before.

Lovely...his voice & majestic personality are more precious than his creation.
Great personality.

pride of India
THE interviewer, MR. KEVIN THOMAS should not have been given the opportunity
to interview late SATYAJIT ROY. HIS preparation was weak and he should have
come to the set with extraordinary amount of preparation about SATYAJIT RAY
and his films. IT was a once in a lifetime opportunity for MR.THOMAS and he
sadly squandered it.
He just didn't care.
Tuhin Dey lol
Apu Roy absolutely ! Couldn't agree more
What a personality....
Houff! Such a personality. #Respect

An utterly undeserving candidate was given the task to take interview of such a great personality,,,, he seemed stammering and uncomfortable in front of the baritone voice of the GREAT Satyajit Ray
