  • @RichardASalisbury1
    @RichardASalisbury1 8 років тому +1070

    I can't tell you how grateful I feel to have seen this clip on UA-cam. I lived in Berkeley from 1961 to 1969, when it had two or three movie theaters that showed many classics of world cinema; there was another such then in Menlo Park near Palo Alto and Stanford. I believe Apu had been released the same year I'd graduated from high school, 1959. In Berkeley and Menlo Park I sat through all three films at one time on 4 occasions by the time I was 23 (1965); by then I could anticipate almost every line of dialogue. I was already a big fan of Ravi Shankar. I found the story--even with English subtitles--the cinematography, the music, the direction, and the acting so absorbing that I felt each time that I had entered the world of Apu and his family. I am rarely given to pompous pronouncements, but I recall saying to myself, as I left the theater after my 4th viewing, "This is Art with a capital A!" I have never seen the trilogy since. I bought it twice on VHS --the first version was in bad focus, with unreadable subtitles--and now I must get the new Criterion release on DVD (I had not heard about the burning of the negatives--though I recall when Ray won an Oscar, not long before he died). The only works of art that have moved me more are in the realm of music (think, especially, Bach, Beethoven, Bartok, and Britten--my four Bs). I think one reason I haven't seen the trilogy since I was 23 is the investment of time and attention required, and a hesitation to approach a work I consider sacred: the same reasons I rarely play a recording of Bach's "St. Matthew Passion." Though there are many great films I've never seen, of the ones I have only a couple seem to me to come near to the trilogy: Resnais's "Hiroshima, Mon Amour" (clearly 2nd place; the greatest antiwar film, I think, that I've seen), and, probably in 3rd, Dreyer's "The Passion of Joan of Arc." Maybe it is time to watch the trilogy again. I know beyond a doubt that it will have stood the test of time, of my maturity and (I hope) increased wisdom, and of a much wider experience of cinema.

      @Lucieon Its complicated. Firstly, the current hindu nationalist government in India is looking to actively impose a common hindi identity all across India by subjugating all other Indian cultures ( and we have quite a few). Also, bengali culture as a whole is suffering because it has somewhat lost its sense of identity and history. Many of us do not have the faintest of ideas about the glorious history of our culture in the arts, sciences, politics etc and hence attach no value to it. Hopefully with another bengali receiving the noble prize, we will reclaim some of our lost glory. Starting from the likes of Rammohan roy, Rabindranath Tagore, Netaji Subhash Bose to the likes of Satyajit Ray, Rittik Ghatak (check him out another great director) and Amartya Sen our culture has a lot to live up to.

    The Academy has done what Government of India, National Film Archive of India and Ministry of Information & Broadcasting should've done.
    For all dedication, hardwork and resources they spent on reviving Ray's work, I'm heartedly grateful.
    I feel sad when I see the kind of films made in Bollywood today. They have artistically and intellectually devolved.
    Thank you Academy.

    Kudos to the Academy & Criterion for this restoration process. What boggles my mind is why an Indian company never thought of doing it first. I know the funds are limited compared to the West but surely the Indian film industry could have collectively came together to honor the work of one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of world cinema.

    We don't show enthusiasm to preserve Ray's creations but Hollywood gives value to the deserved one. Thank you Academy Originals. Satyajit Ray was an institution himself 🙏🙏❤️❤️. He had supreme knowledge of not only Cinema but also of literature and artistic skills❤️. He was a very good Science Fiction writer e.g "Professor Shanku". His remarkable detective character "Feluda" is still considered to be one of the finest in the world. He was a very good painter too. Most of his films' posters were made by Satyajit Ray himself. Legend in it's true sense ❤️.

    I always thought India and Indian artists are underrated in the Hollywood world. But this much love for Satyajit Ray, makes me tear up. He was very poor when he made Pather Panchali. It took him 5 years. That movie was his life. By preserving that film, you have done a great thing for his soul.

    • @sbansban
      @sbansban 2 роки тому

      Oh, come on - it's simply bizarre to claim that Ray was "very poor." He had difficulty getting funding for his first movie - but he was born in a very sophisticated and cultured upper middle class family (son of the legendary Sukumar Ray, grandson of Upendra Kishore Ray Choudhury - both of them household names in Bengal) with extensive family connections to luminaries of the Bengal renaissance like Tagore and many, many others.
