"Two" by Satyajit Ray

  • In 1964, renowned filmmaker Satyajit Ray was asked to create a short film for ‘ESSO World Theater’, a cultural showcase presented on television and funded by the American oil company Esso. Asked to write and direct the film in English, Ray opted instead to make a film without words. The result is a poignant fable of friendship and rivalry. As he did for many of his films, Ray composed the music for the film, including the haunting tune played on the flute.
After Satyajit Ray was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 1992, the Academy embarked on an ambitious endeavor to preserve the works of the Bengali filmmaker. “Two,” also known as “Parable of Two,” is part of the Academy’s Satyajit Ray Collection (www.oscars.org/film-archive/co..., which includes 18 feature films directed by Ray and preserved by the Archive.
Though Ray worked exclusively on 35mm, “Two” may have been filmed on 16mm, as it was created specifically for television. After an exhaustive search for elements relating to the film, three 16mm prints were found. From the 16mm print with the least wear and tear, courtesy of the Austrian Film Museum, a preservation negative was struck. “Two” was then digitally scanned and picture clean up and restoration were performed to eliminate scratches. The 16mm film’s poor audio was also restored. The film is now preserved and available to screen theatrically on 16mm or as a digital cinema package (DCP). Now, audiences everywhere can see this obscure gem, preserved by the Academy Film Archive, from master filmmaker Satyajit Ray.

The rich kid tries to impose his superiority (his idea of happiness) over the poor kid by showing off his materialistic possessions to feel good about himself. Thus he picks up a "fight". He tries to break him as hard as he can. However, the poor kid doesn't lose his spirit and decides to keep himself happy with everything "little" he has. In the end, the rich kid accepts his defeat with a realization that he's not content. Also, him withdrawing himself from his toys, and the tower falling is shown as a metaphor for his defeat and his inability to find joy despite having "everything". "Two" explains the duality of happiness. One that comes from possessions and the other that comes from within.

It's sad how many viewers don't realise that this short film is a subtle portrayal of the *American-Vietnam War* 🇺🇸🇻🇳 by Ray with classic usage of symbolism and metaphors.
At the beginning, look at the *Mickey Mouse cap* and *Coca Cola* symbolising the US. The rich kid is shown to have all the materialistic joys of life yet is insecured by the poor kid's happiness (Much like the US intrusion in Vietnam)....His *loud toys* symbolise the advanced weapons against whom the simple flute, kite etc. is no match..... But at the end, we all know what happened in history, as the rich kid sits lost in the music of the flute and his "toys" crumble down...👏👏👏

VFX artists are contributing more in a film than a filmmaker which is really awful. Baji Rao Mastani, Padmavat in Bollywood and Mank in Hollywood. But on those days Ray, Kubrick, Tarkovsky, Bergman, Kurosawa used to achieve special effects manually on their own with meticulous dedication and hard work which they used to do themselves. This had made them the Real Masters of Cinema.Kudos.

Another who seems poor but being in the wide open spirit of life. While one wants to win to justify the walls , one just allows his free spirit to flow enjoying his existence. Such a strong visual. No need to take home any message, sometimes its life as it is.

I would urge everyone , who have come here to experience this enthralling immutable work of Ray , to go through a book called 'Our Films , Their Flims' by Mr.Ray . He profoundly expresses his discernable ideas about the 'Art'. Rabindranath Tagore had written on his autobiography that those who has many things to plays has actually nothing to plays. That concept is seen here. So the rich boy though having many toys , watches the poor boy.
I am surprised to think that that concept is same today also. That's why Satyajit Ray is eternal. Proud to be a Bengali.

making a movie is very tough.. for a normal person to do a movie in India is to submit his whole life into films.. it's very easy to criticise a movie but doing a movie needs lot of dedication, hard work, brilliance, talent and some luck too.
Why don't you try writing some screenplay.. then u ll understand the hardship of film making

Did any one noticed at 5:25 ,when the rich kid point his gun towards the poor kid with bow & arrow. Poor kid became sad as he realizes that he can't fight with bow & arrow with a kid carrying a gun. This show the world history that how people with guns & money defeated poor people who have no advance weapon to fight, as they always have there traditional weapon. And this is right now is still happening.
