I believe that Larry’s footwork and body position was very deceptive and confusing for the defense. With Larry’s vision and his lean back “Dirk” style shot made him incredibly difficult to defend.
I remember watching a 4k remaster of Bob Cousey. We all remember JJ Reddicks comments both about Bob and Larry. JJ shit on Bob about a week before Bill Russell died. Talk about timing. Anyway, what struck me about Cousey? His ball handling was expert and his passing reminded of Bird highlight films. Cousey knew exactly where his teammates were. Sure, the game wasnt as fast or athletic but thats different from saying players werent athletic and fast. The league had incredible talent back then. Bird's era had even more which meant he had to use every ounce of skill and IQ to be productive, and man was Bird productive. His fingers were all deformed and screwed up on his shooting hand, he ruined his back at the highlight of his career laying down a driveway for his mom. He played with a heart problem throughout his entire 13 seasons, A-Fib. My father in law had that. Knowing Bird dealt with all that AND put up those numbers? I get that young fans will always place modern players over the old guys but man, imagine Bird healthy. His stats at 30 beat Lebron at 30. Knowing what I know, thats crazy!
I dont think he was truly ambidextrous. He wrote with his left hand but did most other things, including most shooting, with his right. He worked on his left on certain shots in the paint. He shoots a few short jumpers in some videos. They are awkward compared to his right handed ones. Of course, he hits them.
