Bird is still the best all-time! No other player had an impact on his team like Larry! The year before Larry 29 wins and single handily his rookie year 61 wins! No one can match that.
David Robinson did (No of course he's not better than Larry Bird). But in 1988-89 the Spurs won 21 games. The next year, D Robinson's rookie year, the Spurs won 56 games. He was the only major superstar addition. Also the Spurs again in Tim Duncan's rookie year went from 20 to 56 (but they "added" David Robinson again because he missed so many games the year before Duncan.) The Celtics again also went from 24 to 66 wins but they added the Big 3 so that's a bit different.

Bird Magic saved basketball b/cause...they LED their teams in an era when players would rather look "pretty" than win. A favorite saying in the late 70s-early 80s was, "Nothing in MY contract about winning! Ironic, too, since most of the prima donnas were calling Pistol Pete a "showboat! Finally, they put the NBA on TV by merging "black" basketball with "white" basketball; Showtime vs. Blue collar entertainment. In the 90's, guys like Jordan and Barkley nearly reversed that. AND, Jordan never won anything w/out Scottie Pippin. And for the MJ worshippers out there, I'm note " hatin' on Jordan." Just stating the facts you all were too young to remember. (Or just don't want to! Ghostbuster.
Ms. Allure: The fascinating thing about his "jersey retirement" is that it wasn't done before, after, or during halftime of a game. It was an entire retirement ceremony during the team's off night, and it was a sold-out event. In my opinion, Larry was the greatest "all-around" player to ever play, and he spent over half of his career with a structurally damaged back injury that would have retired most players. Also, Larry won the 3 pt contest for 3 consecutive years, 86-88. In the 88 contest, Larry didn't even take off his warm-up top as you may have noticed in the video.
Not only did he win in '88 wearing his warmup, just before the contest he went into the locker room and said "I'm feeling pretty good today! Who's coming in second?"
I was friends with one of the Celtics players back in the early days of Bird's career. He never wanted to talk about Bird. But one day he opened up, got very serious, and said that Bird is so much better than most people realize. He stunned his teammates every day in practice. And then, with awe in his voice he said "Larry Bird is almost as good as he thinks he is."

She is definitely not "discovering" Larry Bird in this video. First she just happens to call him a "legend" after only looking at the Wikipedia page. Also, some of the little things she reacts to while watching the video are not things that would stand out to someone who is so new to basketball that they don't even know Larry Bird. Then, after watching a couple minutes of the highlights she is like _"You know, I could totally be wrong about this, but it just feels like he has a special presence and he is just, like, the leader of his team. I mean I could totally be wrong, guys, but, like, that's just what it feels like to me."_ Sorry dude. You've been had. Not to rain on your parade, but this is clearly an act. She is cute, though.
I’ll make it simple. The NBA was DEAD in 1978-79. The Bullets and Sonics traded Championship in a bore. Bird played Magic in the NCAA Finals in 1979 and both entered the NBA together in 1979-80 and it was ON!! The NBA was on fire!! In the 80’s, the Eastern Conference was PHYSICAL!!! They (Celtics, 76’ers, Pistons, Bulls, Knick’s & Pacers) took turns beating each other up. Research “the Jordan Rules”. While we were spoiled in LA. The Lakers reached the finals 9 times in 12 years winning 5. Lakers won 2 of 3 vs Celtics, 2 of 3 from 76’ers and 1 of 2 from Pistons. EVERY series was epic!! I feel bad for those too young to have lived it.
I guess it was boring because the NBA had no great white basketball players that won. While he was one of the greatest, he brought white fans back to the NBA. He was the great white hope of the NBA Isaiah and Rodman were right. Bird knows it.
You forgot the great Milwaukee Bucks of that, era. Bob Lanier., Sidney Montcrief, Jumior Bridgeman, Brian Winters. If it wasn't for two people: Larry Legend and Dr. J, those Bucks would have won some titles in the 80's.
Enrique!!! STUPENDOUS COMMENT. I was angry as hell in 1987. Celtics as you mentioned were getting POUNDED BY FIRST BULLS, THEN MILW AND THEN PUSTONS. In the Eastern semis and eastern Finals we had to play 4 seed Milw and then 3 seed (but much more physical than #2 seed Atlanta) Detroit. Who did LAL have to play in corresponding western semis and finals???? 5th seed Golden State and SEVENTH SEED SEATTLE!!!! Both 2nd seed Dallas and 3rd seed Portland were playing golf AFTER FIRST ROUND UPSETS. CBS analyst Tommy Heinsohn accurately portrayed the Lakers as shiny new Jaguar cars. Celtics as beaten down bread truck with a leaky exhaust. They should have allowed Boston to play Seattle in one league semi and Lakers face Pustons in the other.
@@tonyrome648 Gee Tony .... I wonder if you are black, white, or Asian? YOUR RACIAL BIAS IS SHOWING!!! I am a lifelong Celtics fan, am white, ... but my favorite Celtic is NOT Bird but BILL RUSSELL!!!!
the thing with bird is that he was an off ball dominant player. He was the perfect teammate to play with. You can be a ball hog and he'll still get his buckets, assist and rebounds. That's an extremely rare quality in players. He's the type that when he gets triple doubles, it comes natural. There's no intention involved.
I don't think there is a weakness in his game other than defending quicker players (1 on 1). He is an excellent team defender. Got a decent number of steals through anticipation. Just ask Isaiah.
Good point. He could affect the game in more ways than most players. His passing and selflessness was contagious. The Celtics fast break was a thing of beauty. The ball hardly touched the ground.
The main reason I have Bird ahead of Lebron, didn't need to have the ball everytime. They need to have the others have the ball to run the play and to make them more comfortable. I also think this is the main reason why lebron can't win a chip. Now that he have a better team( Cleveland has more talent offensively but LA is more of a complete Team) in LA, he needs to learn how to play off ball. If LBJ did learns it, even Kawhi wouldn't be able to stop him, can only slow him.
He paid attention to the location of every player, on both teams, whether they had the ball or not. He had that ability to track the game just a second or two into the future. Those no-look passes weren't no look at all, it was just 2 seconds ago that he did the looking. It's not unlike how NFL plays are run. Anticipation is a huge part of the game, but in football you're running 1 or 2 plays a minute, and it's something that you've practiced a thousand times. When a player like Bird is "on," they have that same kind of anticipatory skill running the whole time, and it's all improvised. Magic did it too. Having Bird and Magic on the floor at the same time is like watching wizards dual. You can hardly believe what you're seeing. None of it should be possible, but it's right in front of your face. It's an overused word, but in this case I stand by it: it's athletic genius.
@Butch Jones Lebron is a BEAST!!! Don't get me wrong. As far as athleticism goes, he's the best to do it! A forward who can move like a guard? That's insane! But here where they differ. Bird had something Lebron doesn't. And it's not something you can teach. He had heart. You can't teach heart. Bird not just had the physical gifts, he knew how to break you mentally. Talk you out of the game. And when it was clutch time, Bird CRAVED the last shot. He wanted to be the one to stick that dagger in and wouldn't have it any other way. Lebron has far too often looked too a teammate to close out the game. And he simply lacks that killer instinct needed to make opponents fear him like the feared Bird/Jordan. Lebron is definitely top 3-5 all time. The stats say Lebron is better. But after watching the careers of both, my eye test tells a different story.
@@DiaAkin wayyy over Lebron. It's not even close. Look at this skillset. Who was the last person you saw play this way consistently?........I rest my case.

This is what GREAT players do. They add something to the game. Change the way it's played AND enjoyed. I can't really say that Lebron added anything to the game
I'm totally shocked that a lot of people out here who watch basketball or haven't watched basketball, haven't heard of Larry Bird and his greatness. Bird is underrated, he was a beast in every aspect. These new players today aren't s*** when compared to the old school players. If Bird played today, he would double his points and assists due to the new league rules. @@chrisconley8583 Basketball became popular again with the reborn rivalry between the Lakers and Celtics / Magic & Bird. While Bird and Magic got the NBA popular, Jordan took it to a whole new level. I don't think MJ rode the coattails of Bird and Magic, but simply emerged as the NBA's new superstar and helped the NBA where Bird and Magic left off (basically carrying the torch).
@DougHall While I agree that Jordan carried the torch after them, and took the NBA to new heights, he also started its downfall. I say that because, in my opinion, he started the three step trend, ball carries, palming and superstar favoritism from the refs. From Jordan on the purity of the NBA rules started downhill and have never gotten back to, or even near to, where they started. I will always love my fellow Hoosier from French Lick, Indiana...Bird is my favorite of all time but I am done with the NBA. The game is worthless anymore without the purity of Bird, Magic, their teams and the other greats of that era. R.I.P. NBA. 😥
@@Arakasi22 The purity you refer too is actually more subjective than you might think. Of course the rules have changed and the interpretation/officiating of some rules have changed but since the current version of the game is consistently enforced it is just as 'pure' a game as it ever was. Referees will never be perfect, but they are even implementing a challenge system to actually improve the 'purity' of officiating. I think the reason you think that the refs are biased is that the top players have superior ball handling skills so they can do things like gather steps, step backs, cross-overs, etc. and they know exactly where the line between a legal dribble and a travel or other violation is and push that boundary with precision. The looser enforcement of certain rules compared to past eras has actually allowed for more advanced skills to develop. So yes the game has changed, but I recommend giving the league a second chance after learning how it has developed. There are still great players and great teams if you just give them a chance.
I'm a huge NBA fan going back to the mid 70's with Walton in Portland, David Thompson in Denver and Havlicek in Boston. But in all the years I've watched the NBA, nothing compares to the 1980's and especially Bird's Celtics vs. Magic's Lakers. They competed at a level unmatched since and set up the league we all enjoy today. And then in the late 80's, as those 2 teams began to fade came Isiah Thomas and the Bad Boy Pistons, and later Michael Jordan's Bulls and Hakeem Olajuwon's Rockets playing against Ewing's Knicks, Reggie's Pacers, Stockton and Malone, Barkley's Suns, Payton's Sonics. It's hard to describe to younger folks. But 1980-1998 were truly the NBA golden years. And Bird vs. Magic, Celtics vs. Lakers, East Coast vs. West Coast, Blue collar vs. Showtime.....a rivalry that will never be matched again...was the spark that started it all.
I WAS a huge NBA fan as a result of Bird and Magic. Full disclosure, I'm a New Englander. I find today's NBA unwatchable and full of over paid cry babies who can directly attribute their outrageous salaries to Bird and Magic. Without them, the league would have died in the 80s. Imagine what fools they were for actually staying with the same team throughout their careers and not always looking for a bigger salary or to move because their team may have a down year or two.
Thanks for checking out Bird. Yup.....brothers @ the local Indiana country basketball court waited for him to get off the school bus every afternoon BEFORE the pickup games could begin.
He was a killer. Basically a clutch assassin!
Sister... You're assessment of Bird is on point. The man was a Phenomenon in a time of phenomenons.
Chick click bait not that knowledgeable of NBA...
the thing with bird is that he was an off ball dominant player.
Tatum is no where near Bird but he has that trait. He can score without having to always have the ball.

Of course!!!!
@Butch Jones
Lebron is a BEAST!!!

Plus, Bird and Magic's style of play and their rivalry is what made the NBA a big deal. They weren't really doing that well as a business until they came along and took the game to the next level. Then Jordan came along a few years later and made the NBA a global phenomenon.
This is what GREAT players do. They add something to the game. Change the way it's played AND enjoyed. I can't really say that Lebron added anything to the game

I was a fan already, but despite that I was ignorant to just how good he really was. Seeing others feel that same sense of wonder, and amazement is kind of like if you saw a ufo, and then someone else confirmed, that what you saw was real.
Larry Bird is the best player of all time in my book
I’m a die hard laker fan and Magic is my favorite player but Larry was better. Respect
Larry wasnt better than magic but he is top 20
Chuck Bizzert he’s top 5
@Angie Williams I saw them both play in their prime, Magic is the most fun to watch over everyone, but Larry was better.
@Angie Williams while Magic has better court vision being a PG, Larry had the best IQ. These guys in their prime didn't give one rat's ass about Jordan. Larry legend the only celtic I admire...and I loved Magic's game, more fun to watch than MJ.
@@chuckbizzert9098 Hahaha. Right, and Ali was top 50. You're an idiot

yes, lots of make up and all but she may look even prettier without. She's unarguably sweet and I'd surely like to talk to her which is more important :)

Love what you had to say and your reactions. I grew up watching the relationship between Magic and Bird grow into what it still is today, and that was delightful to watch. Thanks for posting!
Kudos to you for taking the time to learn about one of the greatest players to play the game of basketball. #50greats
Your reactions were fun! You summed up Larry Bird pretty well for not having known any of his history too!
Holy Trinity of Basketball: Bird, Magic, Jordan
Yes a very special player and an emotional video, thank you for sharing it again I’ve watched it many times
Many people don't know this but Larry was the first person Magic called when he found out he was diagnosed with HIV. They are great friends
Actually it was Bird that called Magic.
@@rosssmith5963 Yup... you correct... I think Magic said it was one of the first calls he got from anyone outside his family
Lol, that just sounds not true. C'mon man. No way you'd call a "friend" and tell them that ish before you tell your family.
@@cmbsoldja It was in the documentary... And Magic told the story.
@@cmbsoldja why not? I wouldn't get the HIV as I don't sleep with crack heads; that being said, I'm not close with my family, I'd call my friends before family with tragedy.
I love how she comes into this with no expectations and after watching the video and seeing his accomplishments is blown away. And Jean Claude Van Damn she is fine.
Gabriel Jude love the fresh prince reference
Yes she is.
She is beautiful no cap and it is natural beauty as well
Nice Fresh Prince reference
She is absolutely stunning.
He always knew where everybody was on the court
Thank you for this ma'am. He was a once in a lifetime type player that would affect a game in multiple ways. It was a totally different game than played today. Inside game was the game. Players rarely left a team for more money or to build a super team, they left if they were unhappy or for more playing time. It was just a different mindset. Thanks again ma'am.
These highlights made me look at Larry Bird in a whole new light I knew he was great but damn I loved every minute of it shout out to the Birdman
As a kid in the 80s, it was awesome to see him play.
So many great TEAMS from that era.
There’s a reason he’s called Larry Legend. His trash talk is epic. Backed it up too.
I MISS THOSE DAYS WHEN BIRD AND JORDAN AND MAGIC PLAYED.
Greatest era ever!!!!
Ah, the 80s. Damn, that was an awesome decade.
You should have been around in the mid-late 60s, early 70s, when Gus Johnson, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, and Bill Russel were around.
You and every real sports fan.
Man, you know it!
That mixtape made my eyes swell up with tears 🥺
Larry Bird was so smooth
Thanks Lakers fan! Magic was pretty good too lol
@Barrier Boy Walter Davis.
The Lakers - Celtics rivalry back then was legendary; so many great matches
Along with the 76'ers vs Celtics. The series in 81 and 82 were legendary.
@@merbac Celtics-Lakers and Celtics-76ers rivalries go back to the 1960's!

Lakers - Celtics rivalry started in the 1959 finals. Boston defeated the Minneapolis Lakers in 4 games.
Nothing today even remotely compares. It was a game you marked on the calendar.
Larry Bird is basketball's Zinedine Zidane.. truly genius.. *art like Zidane.*
Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson.. that's trinity of basketball.
Amen brother, that is indeed the NBA Holy Trinity!
Headbutt.
Damn straight. Then you could put two college freshman on the team with them and still be unbeaten.
THE PISTOL TAUGHT THEM ALL
Bird is more a Johan cruyff of basketball
Very cool to witness you witnessing for the first time the NBA's most _"phenomenal"_ player of all time. Larry Bird was--and always _will_ be--the sport's greatest _"phenom"!!_
His court vision incredible, and his ability to read and anticipate his opponents movements and reactions was remarkable....Side note: this woman always looks impeccable, always on point with the outfit, hair, makeup, amd knowledge of the topic....this quickly becomin one of the best reaction channels on UA-cam....
I loved your expressions and emotional reaction re the Larry Bird highlights:)
This is why anyone who was able to watch him in his prime knows how truly special he was and remains.
Feel blessed to have witnessed and been a fan of his game and the Celtics during the 1980's.
I love his passes. It's also not possible without complete trust and expectations from one another. They're a team
Kevin stated that the team was so deep and so Very good that they just expected to win every game.
@@williamlarimer334 wow!
I’m about to turn 40. Bird was a huge part of my early education in basketball. He was absolutely amazing. The first basketball player I idolized, and arguably the most complete NBA player ever. I think it’s awesome that younger people are getting exposed to his playing. Also…the single nastiest trash talker ever.
The making of a new Larry Bird fan. He was my favorite to watch in the 80's. I so appreciate your appreciation of how amazing he was, how hard that was. Good work educating yourself. Go look at John Stockton now.
For being off the cuff, your assessment was very good! Talking about how Bird was a floor general, had the clutch gene, intuited the magnitude of the Bird-Magic rivalry. Spot on!
As a 10-y/o back then, I didnt know anything about basketball. After watching my first NBA game on TV (Bucks-Celts) on Dec of '89, this no. 33 Bos dude made me want to learn to play the sport.
In my 2 decades of watching & playing the game I love, I only ever had two idols in the NBA, and Larry Bird was the OG. ☘️☘️☘️
Brought chills reliving those moments. What that video didn't show though was his trash talking. If you get a chance to find out what kind of cold hearted assassin he was, listen to other NBA greats talk about their experience with his trash talking. He can tell the other team what the play was, what he was going to do and there was nothing they could do to stop it. Legendary
LeBron can't f*** with Larry Legend! Greatest small forward of all time!
Julius Erving was the greatest small forward
@@jsmith469 Greatest at what dunking?? Sure ain't a better all around player than Bird! Hell he proved that on the court over and over!

And in his book. The true GOAT but no one wants to admit it

@@jagibbs1847 - if you think it's all about titles then you obviously don't have a clue. Teams win titles, not a player. Bill Russell has 11. Does that make him the GOAT?
Bird would have said the same to Magic too
Ja Gibbs Byrd leading the Celtics swept Jordan’s Bull 3 times in the playoffs. Larry’s last season playing injured the Bulls with Jordan won the championship. When Byrd played and was healthy Bulls with Jordan got swept a hard to believe fact.
He and Magic saved the NBA, then Jordan right after them.
McFly Jordan has nothing to do with “saving the NBA” he did get to ride on the coattails of their work though.
@@Arakasi22 ok boomer
I was blessed to be able to watch this man play!! He was the reason I became a Celtics fan . Larry legend let's go!!
Showtime.....a rivalry that will never be matched again...was the spark that started it all.
natskivna the allstar games in the 80's had better passion and interest than todays nba! bring back the short shorts and haircuts!
I always talk to youngsters about David “Skywalker” Thompson. I’m glad I’m not alone anymore.
You had to live through it to appreciate how truly great it was!
Thanks for checking out Bird.
Yup.....brothers @ the local Indiana country basketball court waited for him to get off the school bus every afternoon BEFORE the pickup games could begin. Grew up ballin' wit' the brothers & earned mad respect.
The Shaq, Iverson, and Mourning embroidered jerseys in my closet all take a back seat to the Bird game jersey.
Bad white boy? Bad boy, period. Ax the brothers.
I'll have to rewatch some Jordan highlights because Bird did so many things absolutely no one else could do...especially the tap passes. To start my team, I would take Bird over anyone else for his savagery alone- nevermind his complete skill set.
Well said. I believe Bird, Magic, Jordan are the top 3 in any era. All time.
@@chadroberts3727 I would 100% agree with those three. I haven't seen many Chamberlain clips but he's on my starting squad too. Probably have to take the hyper-athletic, huge, and dominant Lebron at SF to round out the 5.
I think I'd take a young Shaq and Tim Duncan to add to my first 3.
I would take Kevin Mchale over Duncan..@@chadroberts3727
I love McHale. But he cant put up the offensive numbers Duncan can and did. Duncan is the best 4 probably ever. But make no mistake, Kevin McHale is one of my all time favorites.
I enjoyed watching this with you. Haven’t seem some Larry in a long time. 👍🏼☺️ He was so good.
There hasn't been someone before or after with the Heart and Determination that Larry Bird had. He left it all on the court every game.
And his talent made him the greatest. Some, though, have had the same heart and determination. Jeremy Lin for one. Look what he overcame just to make a team.
ummm....I'm sure you've heard of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
@@diggingmystyle Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time. But Bird's heart is unmatched. Kobe is a great player but doesn't have the heart of Bird.

Him and magic were rivals yes...but theyre opposite in everything...and to this day, the BEST of friends
They were not opposites on how they played
Larry Bird is definitely in my top 5 all time greatest players ever!! Great reaction ✌🏾
Appreciate the nice words you said about Larry Bird that's so nice of you, he sure was something else, and I love how respectful magic Johnson was to him. Magic is a great man, I'd love to hang out with him someday
I think the quote below by Pat Riley says it all: "If I need a shot to win a game I'd choose Michael Jordan yo take the shot; but if I needed a shot to save my life I choose Larry Bird to take it. That speak volumes from a Hall of Frame coach!!
They call Larry Bird LARRY THE LEGEND for a reason..
Or "Larry Legend" in Boston-speak.

Same reason I watched this is the same reason I watch Cari Champion on ESPN. Not listen to necessarily, but watch.
I still get amazed watching magic and bird highlights and I've been watching them over and over all my life. It's really dope to see a new fan experience it for the first time. Love the channel.
Throughout the video, she's dumbfounded, amazed, and just in awe of what she's seeing. I grew up watching Bird and have seen his highlights countless times and I'm still just as dumbfounded, amazed and in awe of what I'm seeing! Larry Legend indeed.
Larry Bird, the GOAT!
I appreciate your response! Good video!
I hated Larry Bird. But, if I'm building a team, my SF is Larry Bird every time.
Yup. He was an AMAZING passer; something people forget.
Yeah, as a Laker fan, it was easy to hate him. But now that all that's over, it's just as easy to forget all that and admire his game.
The CTB Channel i love bird but lebrons better
😂😂😂😂
Zach Ruggiero no is not. Bird got hurt. Look at the stats at age 30, bird way superior in a tough league. Cannot deny how Lebron is physically way superior to pretty much everybody, but skill Bird all the way. Bird made his game based in accuracy, skill and intelligence and lebron used his skill and superior physique
Love your reaction and analysis. This was basketball's greatest era. All the greats.
