I lived over in Edinburgh back in 2004, and heard this story. I tried to never look up when I was walking through the streets! But it was a beautiful place.

while walking down the mile....we were so thankful that you now have indoor plumbing. We could not imagine how it could be allowed in such a beautiful city. We loved Edinburgh

It’s really amazing how anyone lived to adulthood in the times before indoor plumbing! This was an interesting look into a side of history I hadn’t given much thought to

Brilliant 👌 But when you went down the close I can’t tell you how badly I wanted someone to open their window and shout “gardyloo” at you 😂😂😂 that would have been video gold 🙌😂

Hello Tony from Thomas! Thanks for another fun video and this one on Auld Reekie. First learned of Gardyloo at the Real Mary King's Close and it was really hard to fathom that people of that period could live in the filth and stench like that. Even if it was swept and washed down the hill it still would end up in the Loch. Hard to believe they would draw water from the Loch with all that was in it! Enjoyed seeing Gladstone's Land in the video and the wife and I took the Tour on our latest visit based on seeing it in one of your videos as well. Glad to see you had some pleasant weather this late in the season and you could do a walkabout with the jacket open ( wink wink nudge nudge). We didn't have much of that weather when we were there in early October. We are already missing your Edinburgh again.

I so enjoy your history lessons. I grew up hearing "Mind your manners", and "Who will mind the store or the place"? Did an inventor from Edinburgh or Scotland invent indoor plumbing, I wonder?? Thanks for the lesson, Mr. Tony!🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

You made me laugh at that joke, too.(the building fits between your thumb and finger) Made that joke myself a time or two. It's a classic.

I love the history, too! ♡
    ..gardyloo! sounds extremely smelly!
Just thinking of the narrow closes, throwing 'the loo' out one window and inadvertently in through another one, on the opposite side!!😱
I can't imagine what else they could have done, maybe loo-men with carts?
Did they just let it stay in the streets
    - was there some sort of 'collection'?
    - or was rain a godsend?

Dont know unfortunately. Think there ay have been some minor cleaners, and we have no shortage of rain.

East of Scotland Water had a ship that was filled with sewage that went out to sea and pumped said sewage into the sea! The name of the ship was called The Gardyloo!

Our one big regret was not seeing you in Edinburgh. We truly wished that we could perhaps meet you and your wife and just talk story over a great meal. Maybe one day. Would love to return one day soon.

Great video again! If you haven't read it yet read Hamish Goghill's "Lost Edinburgh" he writes extensively about the whole sanitation problem, where it all went and who was hired to clean it up! He also writes a lot about how difficult it was back then to stop those 14 story buildings from falling down....

Cracking video, Tony😂🤣. Brill bit of 'ancient history'. My, how tymes have changed. Could not help but get the visuals of the contents of poo pots being chucked out the windows and hitting whomever on the streets below, then having to walk in the muck afterwards🤢🤮. Slàinte

The first time I heard the name Old Reeky a Scotsman tried to tell me it was because of the smell of coal being burned throughout the city. I said he tried.

    • @ClanBroonford

I’ve just moved into my flat in James Close (David Hume lived here), I don’t think my new neighbours will be too happy if I tried out ‘gardyloo’, I’ll maybe give it a few months 😂

Mary Kings Close tells that story in their narrative. And you can really see what it would have been like when you look at the stories above. They explain how the richer people lived up higher for that very reason. The richer you were the less poo pored on you

Your child self was actually right ! "Gardyloo" was a short adaptation from "prenez garde à l'eau", with "prenez garde" meaning "mind/be on your guard", and the English word "loo" actually derives from the French "l'eau" !

Love all your videos, especially ones line this that share history you won't find in a boring guide book. We're heading to Edinburgh in early June next year and I"m wondering where to go if we want a chance to meet people from Edinburgh rather than just other tourists. Do locals hang out on the Royal Mile?

    • @ClanBroonford
      @ClanBroonford  4 роки тому +1

Not really hang out on the oryal mile. But venture out to the grassmarket, George street and leith. You will find them.
