  • I picked this 12 Terrain up at the auction. It was pushed through the lane because it wouldn't stay running. It had a really bad engine noise, which I discovered was just a cam phaser. I performed a cylinder leak down test to rule out bent valves. After installing a new timing chain set and replacing both camshaft phaser sprockets, the noise was gone. This one should turn out to be a nice flip with $6k+ profit to be made. Not bad for a easy days work. It had timing chain codes P0011 & P0016

I appreciate your videos, I just did the timing chain in an '07 HHR with the 2.2 ecotec and found the same things wrong that you did in another one of your videos. Sloppy chain, broken top guide plastic, and a collapsed tensioner. Mine is still open, I will check rocker arm / followers next time I go in to reverse my tear down. I am waiting for a new valve cover gasket to arrive. Thank you for confirming what I discovered the hard way. Maybe I'll do it again if the price and condition permit. One of my kids will be driving this HHR. Very cool thank you.

I had a similar issue with a equinox 2.4. I replaced the timing chain but didnt replace the phasers. When I went to start it it started right up but it sounded like yours did and I ended up getting codes p0017 and p0011. I discovered the exhaust phaser was bent so i just replaced both phasers last night and today im putting everything back together I'm going to give it another start. Hopefully it works. But great video and very informative thank you for posting.

No problem, I've learned that lesson the hard way. I always do the entire kit now, phasers and all.

I have 121k on my Malibu 2.4 eco. No clatter I change oil every 4k. Just got a p0011 the other day. Changed the vvt solenoids and the codes and light went away instantly.

I got a 2013 sle with 99000 miles. I think the rear main seal is on the way out. I'll never buy a gmc again

Check the pcv system, they carbon up. You can buy a oil cap with a pressure relief valve as a cheap pcv solution to crankcase pressure.

@@shedhouse7330 thanks, man. I just bought that FC219 cap. I’m thinking about adding a oil catch can too. I’ll clean that pcv hose tomorrow.

@@yausaptheshasuabary180 I added an oil catch can to my wife's 2012 GMC Terrain SLT 2.4. It helps a lot during the colder weather. It'll fill up the can in 2 weeks in cold weather. Hot weather, nothing. I intend on installing an oil cap with the filter on top for pressure relief.

@@heyitsbroski so I installed a oil catch can. Now I’m idling at 1000. I think I have a leak because my mpg also went down. The pressure relief oil cap mentioned above is working good too.
