I have this guitar and can say that the frets are decent, only slightly rough edges if you dig in real good. I feel the pickups are good for vintage sounds. They sound good with crunch but not high gain. I plan to replace mine with Seymour Duncan peguses and sentient pickups. I also own the 1955 inspired model. The neck on the 55 is thicker which i prefer although the standard 50s has a nice hand filling neck just not as thick. For the price point i think they could use a better looking vaneer considering its just a vaneer. My standard 50s does look nice and has a good hefty feel.

That guitar and those pickups are made for classic rock and hard rock.
The pickups are PAF style, scatter-wound, Alnico 2, low output. GREAT for cleans and boosted tones and crunch tones with big balls but without the high gain, saturation and compression.
Great dynamics, note separation and clarity even while having a decent amount of drive is what that thing is intended for.

I bought the '59 Epiphone Les Paul... it is awesome. I also have an SG Muse, Gold Glory, SG Junior and a Les Paul Special 1 with P-90's, all KEEPERS! These guitars range from $106 to $699. Great bang for the buck...thanks for your review. I think Epiphone is back in a HUGE way. I also want to complement your playing, you illustrated the versatility of the guitar very effectively. Good job man

My first LP I got a few months ago is a Epi LP Standard but one the rare TV Silver finish. Got it for $200 and about $200 worth of upgrades (tuners, pups, mojotone wiring) it’s one of my favorite guitars I’ve ever played. Chug machine! Really interested on trying the new Standards.

I just picked up my Epiphone Les Paul standard from a local guitar shop with a professional set up and not only do I love the feel and sound, it was one of the guitar techs favorites to play in the shop. Paired it with a fender blues junior amp and I’m getting just what I’m looking for sound wise. Really don’t think it could fit me any better, picked it up and felt right immediately. I’m just learning but playing on a really nice, well setup and sounding guitar, I’m definitely playing more often because I enjoy it. Well worth looking at for a new guitar!

I actually just picked up a '60s Standard in Bourbon Burst and I've never felt a more comfortable neck. Also, the '50s has the ProBucker 1 & 2, whereas the '60s has the 2 & 3, and I honestly really like them. They have a really natural '60s era fuzz which I actually love and was aiming for. Being that the ProBucker (which was based on the BurstBucker which itself was based on the original PAF) has the same metallurgical consistency as the PAF in terms of having 18% nickel silver bases, bobbins the same dimensions as the PAF, Alnico II magnets, and being unevenly wound (and slightly overwound), I think the pickups do a great job emulating the PAF, and I, personally, wouldn't swap out the pickups, except maybe for the Alnico II BurstBuckers. My only complain is that the Bourbon Burst came out less pale and more orange towards the center than I expected, but I'm cool with it, mostly. Strongly encourage those on the fence with the '60s model to pull the trigger, you won't be disappointed.

I have a gold-on-white 'tuxedo' -style 2016 Epiphone LP Custom Pro that I got in a trade last year, and it is now one of my favorite guitars; it's my go-to for E-standard or drop-D.
I figured out a little trick by accident that helps a lot with the shrill fizzly highs that the Probuckers can be bad about. Get a Boss NS-2 and use its send/return jacks to loop it into your chain TWICE -- once in front of the amp, once in the fx loop. Turn up threshold knob to about 3 o'clock (or possibly more or less; adjust according to ear). It's at this point that the infamous NS-2 "tone suck" actually becomes advantageous, and tone-sucks just enough to cut off the annoying fizzly stuff, but leaves the rest of your tone intact.
I do this through a Marshall DSL-100HR as part of my standard setup, boosted with a DOD Gunslinger out front, going into a mildly dirty clean-crunch channel. Give it a try, see if it works with your rig!

Well ,when it was designed by Les Paul, it was not really meant at the time for heavy metal. It was a compact jazz guitar. So maybe that's why it has an issue like most to stay in tune. Banging and bending was not Les's style. Just my thoughts.

  • @gregdunn6040

So I definitely enjoyed the review and your playing, we're very different style players so the pickups work for me. But I agree with your points on the neck profile and electronics. I have both the Gibson 50's and 60's Standards and honestly I play the Epi 50's a lot more than those two, it's a solid Les Paul.

I did order a 50s metallic gold that I returned due to a damaged fret. It was really nice, but the neck shape felt more like a 56 Gibson neck, it was really substantial. I felt it was slightly too much, so I ordered a 60s as a replacement. The 60s is still not very slim, and I think both necks still has a hint of shoulders that the Gibson traditional 50s has not. I have a 2012 version of this. It has a really nice 50s profile, but I think it feels closer to epi's 60s than the 50s. Not quite sure, though, as I didn't have the Gibson while I played the 50s epi. The 60s is still very good. I agree on the pickups, but fret work generally was good on mine. The veneer on the back makes the guitar look way cheaper than if they had just left it alone like Gibson does on their multi piece backs (on studios, for instance).

I have the epi 59 and it is an absolutely amazing sounding guitar. And the quality control in mine is great . The neck profile is actually slightly thinner than the 50s standard. Its listed as a rounded c but mine sits in between the C and D profile and is really quite comfortable I was expecting it to be thicker than the 50s standard and am slightly disappointed that it is not but it's still a great neck profile it's also thinner than a gibson r9. It is certainly thicker than a slim taper neck but it's also not quite a full medium c but that could just be my particular epi 59. . The medium c on my gibson standard 50s is a bit thicker and a fuller medium c. The epi 59 is almost like a D profile with some of the shoulder rounded off bit with enough shoulder left so as to not quite be a full on c profile . But I cant say enough about the sound . The burstbuckers 2 and 3 are a great match for this guitar particularly the 3 in the bridge some were disappointed that I did not come with burstbuckers 1 and 2 because some feel they would be closer to real pafs than the 2 and 3 based on the 2 and 3 being hottet but real pafs very in output by pretty wide range so the 2 and 3 are just as accurate in terms of output . The hotter overwound vintage pafs tend to come from 59 and 60 and the earlier ones from 57 and 58 tend to be mellower . One of main reasons 59 les pauls are more desirable than other years is that 59 pafs were hotter and pushed the amp more . I think the burstbucker 2 was the better choice for this guitar. The BB3 in the bridge is slightly mellower and more rounded in the epi 59 then they are in the 2 gibsons I have with the same pickups but still sound unmistakably like the the 2 and 3 and I think its becuase the bridge pickup on the epi is farther away from the bridge than on gibsons so it rounds of and mellows out some of the BB3's bite and agression that I hear in those pickups in my gibsons. I think a burstbucker 2 in the bridge of the epi 59 would be almost to mellow . The BB2 sounds great in neck but I might pop in a burstbucker 1 or whole lotta humbucker neck that I have laying around for a little extra clarity and crispness for the neck . The wlh neck is a fantastic pickup and you can play heavily overdriven riffs on it without getting any mud . Its sounds like a thicker bridge pickup which is the hallmark of a vintage paf in the neck . It would probably make a great bridge pickup n with its 8.2k resistance and alnico 5 magnet it's got more than enough power for the bridge .. probably would sound like a Duncan 59 bridge with slightly more mids .

These look nice if you put a set of pearly gates in I bet it would be awesome...i haven’t heard much about the pickups so thank you for the review..also agree the burst is kinda abrupt

I love my Goldtop! And I love that THICK neck! I replaced the pickups with Phat cats so now it's THICK and PHAT! I just bought an Earvana nut just to see if I can make the first frets a bit more intonated.
Next project is to buy a modern one in Pelham blue and put some gnarly sounding pickups in it (and also replace those ugly ass buttons)

I have a big love hate relationship with les pauls i love the look and how some play but stuff like the scale length kinda puts me off since i like to drop tune so id have to use massive strings which im not a huge fan of even then i run into issues when it comes to keeping it in tune and another problem is the weight as someone who suffers from back pain sometimes heavy guitars have fallen out of favour for me especially since i like to move around and head bang when i play standing up

    • @VMinoda
      @VMinoda 3 роки тому +1

yeah man, same here. that look is to die for, but as an instrument... access to higher frets, weight, tuning stability (especially relevant for Gibsons because of the headstock angle). Wanna try out one of them newer LTD EC to see if that one's better.

I have this very same guitar and a Gibson Studio. As he says here, the Epiphone Inspired By Gibson is not quite as good, of course, as the Gibson but it is close enough to make it more than worth it. Not everyone can afford upwards to 3 grand for the Gibson. This Epiphone is a darn good guitar for the money. Has the right look, the right feel, the right vibe in a licensed Les Paul. Not quite the same quality as the Gibson, but it gets you pretty darn close for WAY less money. Looks, sounds, plays GOOD. Highly recommended. It is great that with divisions like Epiphone and Squire players can get into Les Pauls, Strats, etc. of very decent quality without breaking the bank.

See comment above if you wonder. Nice guitar with slightly more ergonomical tuners (grovers are really good), neck is still not super slim. I haven't looked inside the pickup cavities of mine yet, but I think one feature that set 50s and 60s apart, is the 50s has got a longer neck tenon.

You might have mentioned that the Epi has a LONG NECK TENON, where the Gibby DOES NOT! (and yes, that long tenon makes the neck more stable, and definately adds to the sustain.

I thought it sounded quite good. I own a Gibson '59 Reissue Les Paul Special. I considered an Epi for a Standard but got a PRS SE 245 ..their LP wannabe. Right out of the box it played perfect. Every fret dressed to perfection with low action and the finish was flawless. My Gibson does NOT have a flawless finish. It also had a bit of fret sprout and needed a serious set up. It cost $200 to make it right! Bottom line ...to be polite ....an Epi is Not good value for money. A made in Mexico Strat is 100% Pro guitar in every way. Fit, finish and sound!!! There is zero excuse for Gibson not to do the same. The only thing that costs more on an Epi is the binding. The guitars are made on CNC machines so a set neck is not more expensive to do. Mahogany is imported into China virtually duty free and it is cheaper than alder!!! Labour is cheaper than Mexico. The word 'gouge' comes to mind!

The old Standard Standards, not 50s or 60s they only have now, didnt make me want it over my LP100. Perhaps these are better than those?
