    I'm absolutely in love with this guitar ! Bought it 2 weeks ago and I can't stop playing it ! Stunning sustain and tone, incredible solid build, suprisingly comfortable neck. I found this chunky fat neck much more comfortable than the modern C shaped necks from Fender's Strats. No hand pain after playing on this Epi Standard 50s, even after a long practice session. It is very easy and very rewarding to play it. I have no complaints. The sound is bright and clear but not piercing, somewhere between a '57 and '59 Les Pauls. Using volume and tone knobs you can do countless combinations and obtain a lot of sounds from it. Also it has that classic Les Paul bite when is getting overdriven. The pickups are great, responding stunningly well on pick attacks. If you play lightly, the sound will be mellow and full. If you pick a note harder, it gives you that specific "Slashier" kind of bite from "Appetite for Destruction" era. Works very very well on overdrive. Very clear sounding, no muddiness both on drive and clean channels. The 50's wiring does a very good job, never losing the high frequencies when lowering the volume knobs. I was in between the Epi LP Classic and this Standard 50s Gold Top. I have no regrets chosing the 50s. Is a very special model and one of a kind from Epiphone. I recommend it to anyone, no matter their level of playing. It feels to me like a twice priced guitar. Fabulous sound, both acoustic and plugged. I watched your reviews and I'm very pleased with your way of saying things, straightforward and very honest. Your reviews helped me to give this guitar a try, and turned out to be one of my best choices in terms of instruments of my life. Thank you so much! I subscribed to your channel a while ago and can't wait to see what's coming up next.

    I walked into the music shop yestetday and saw a Slash '59 Goldtop. I thought,'What a beautiful guitar'. I was looking for a strat, but when my son walked up with that goldtop, and I held and played it... Well, it's one helluva guitar and it only has 'Slash' on the trussrod cover! When I plugged it in, I knew I would be walking out with it. I'll get a strat some day.

    With respect to Trogoly I find your playing so much more enjoyable and thus the reviews more honest with regard to tones and the instruments capabilities. Only mod Id do is an amber recessed Switchcraft. The 50s has probucker 1 and 2 vs the 60s with a hotter probucker3 in the bridge btw.

      There are some cosmetic issues like some finish on the bindings, but it still looks gorgeous!
      Playability wise everything seems okay, no sharp frets.. action is good..
      My first impression playing it is that, it's so different from my strat.. just lots of subtle things that adds up, like how it sits on your leg and how heavy it is.
      I thought my strat was kinda heavy before, I guess not!

    Great review, my Goldtop is coming on Monday. I owned a Gibson les paul signature T Goldtop a few years ago but sold it due to the whole wife and kids coming on the scene and prams and car seats taking priority. I was worried the difference would be so great, but seeing your opinion having owned a standard before I feel hopeful.
    Thanks for the video, I've subscribed, keep up the great and informative work, from a fellow Brit.

    • @donge9589
      @donge9589 3 роки тому +3

      @@doodlesasap7894 Yes I really do like it, it feels a step up from the epiphones and entry level Gibson I've played before, it's the right shape and weight also. I think they have got the quality per pound factor bang on the money.
      The hardware feels solid and giggable, it is very stable tuning wise. I did have to treat the fret board a bit, and polished the frets up, but I expected to do that at this price point so no biggy there.
      The pickups are decent enough to leave in unless your after a particular sound. I played guitar on a friend's song, line out from boss katana straight into his desk and it sounded how a les paul should sound.
      I can't find any flaws on the finish of the guitar and would definitely consider buying another colour at some point just so I can leave one standard, and mess with upgrading the pickups on the other just to see how much better it could get.
      If you get one, lower the PUPS down a little as I found them too hot for my playing, and I prefer the more airy natural sound when they are closer to the body.

    Got my Goldy today and ordered a set of standard Monty's Pickups PAF pickups, no covers, cream bobbins. New Pot's and caps although Epiphone is using CTS pots in these guitars and have stepped up there game in that department. Stock pickups are rather good, too. Great bang for the buck with this series of Epiphone Les Pauls and your review has no doubt sold a few.

    Once again, beautiful chord progression and soft touch while playing, especially at the end! Really could listen to you play all day!
    Thank you for this review! I have been watching trogly a lot lately and am partial to Epiphone instead of Gibson for some reason even though they used to be inferior quality wise when I was learning guitar in the 90s. Gibson's are just so expensive in Australia with import fees. How was the quality control of the Epiphone in your opinion? I would probably get the gold top as well...

    • @theguitaristas
      @theguitaristas  3 роки тому +5

      Hey thanks Caroline that's really appreciated! I try to be honest in my 'reviews' so it's true that I found little or nothing to moan about with the QC on this guitar... definitely comparable with Gibson imho and streets ahead of the Epiphone of old. Actually the next few films we make will pitch expensive Gibson against cheap Epiphone of same model, so we can challenge that claim. Watch this space!

    I like your reviews, your process is quite similar to my own. And surprisingly we've reached a lot of the same conclusions. I have an R8 that I use as the benchmark, and then run the others against it and the new batch from Epiphone are some serious contenders in terms of tone and feel.

    I bought a gold top about 6 years ago and love it.
    Mine has Grover tuners and are great and a narrow D neck great for my small hands.
    I have another Epiphone a john Lennon casino and that is a great guitar.
    I am amazed the quality of these guitars coming out of China.
    I am a old bloke and have been playing for fifty odd years and like you have a lot of guitars.
    Talking to a guitar guy who was over in the states at NAIM show twenty years ago he saw these Chinese guys getting around measuring and taking photos of a lot of guitars.
    What has happened is they have cloned les Paul's and others .
    As you have said why buy a Gibson unless you have plenty of money.
    Love your show from a old guitar player from down under.
    Also I like your looping and it would be good to do a show on looping for the beginers out there it has definitely improved my guitar playing and enjoyment.
    Cheers Rob.

    I couldn’t agree more on your thoughts about this 50’s Goldtop.
    These are an incredible value and although I’ve said it before it bears repeating…These are a great value and will definitely scratch the itch especially if you already own a Gibson.
    I’m simply considering one of these just for the chunky neck. I mean honestly, a player could just pick up an Epiphone to fit each playing mood and not feel any regret.
    Fantastic, soulful Bowie as well.
