  • Today we are talking about some of my recommendations and how I approach finding good bottles in Kentucky. I'm sure locals have some great ideas as well, but as an out of towner with few connections... a tourist... here is how I get my hands on some interesting and fun bottles of America's favorite liquor.

I live in KY (for 24years), your video is spot on. You can find almost any bottle you want BUT you will pay dearly for it! Unless you are at Liquor Barn or Kroger.

We just went and did the following. Jim Beam usually has some of their allocated stuff out (Bookers, Little Book, etc.). Both Four Roses usually have SBBS (unfortunately, we struck out). EW Experience on Whiskey Row has EW12 (you're supposed to get it after the tour but I got one just by asking). Michters you can line up early for the chance for BYO or a bundle (we got BYO) or try to get an afternoon drop. Buffalo Trace only does a daily bottle (rotates ER, EHT, WSR, Blantons (we got WSR, sad)). Neat has WT8 and WT12. Castle and Key had a special release rye (Woolgatherer). Glenn's Creek is next door, but we didn't have time to go. Buzzard's Roost on Whiskey Row had some great pours, but it's all MGP so I didn't pick up a bottle. We skipped HH, but they sometimes have morning and afternoon releases (usually core stuff but occasionally OF, PH, WHH, etc.). Almost every distillery has an unaffiliated Facebook group that posts updates.

Also when in Louisville you need to stop at a bar named NEAT if you want to try old or rare bottles. Very cool place. I tried a Wild Turkey 101 12 yr from 1992.

Back in October my wife insisted I drive over to Woodford Reserve while we were in Lexington. I too hadn’t planned on visiting. Ended up walking out with their Toasted Oak Four Grain and we both really enjoyed that quick stop. Absolutely beautiful drive out and a gorgeous setting to visit.

We just came back from the trail about 2 weeks ago, and found a few distilleries only bottles and some I can't get back in Houston. First day tour at OF, we got the SiBBS Rye, couldn't get the President's Choice. Lucked out at Michters the next day while we were in line and for Michters 10yr Rye,but as a package deal. EW ended up with their masters blend and the 12yr. Heaven Hill was cool, but they didn't even put out any of the ECBP or Larceny BP, was little disappointed there. Otherwise, got some nice bottles at Cox/Evergreen in NULU. Hopefully next trip, I'll have more time to see more distilleries. BT was a bust in term of bottles, as it was Weller SR that day, which is plenty here in TX.

The Bardstown 4 grain single barrel is only available at the Lousville Experience. It is quite good...I picked up a bottle last week. I never really have good luck at any of the other Lousville distilleries. I live near Lexington and have had much better luck at Woodford and Four Roses. Buffalo Trace has 1 of 4 special bottles every day. Overall, good video for those coming to visit!

Really enjoyed Louisville last year. Beautiful weather and excellent distillery visits nearby including Wilderness Trail and Four Roses. Bardstown has a bar in one of their rickhouses. The aroma in a rickhouse and sampling whiskey from the barrel is a memory I will not forget easily. Cheers and Season’s Greetings.

Do you find that different times of year a better selection or more things will be available? We're planning a trip in Fall 2025.

Hope you didn't skip Peerless bro, it's only a stone's throw from Michter's. Kind of boring to visit KY and only hit/talk about the major distillers.

Peerless is great but their prices are a little steep

@@MF-ng9um True, but they're a small shop doing sweet mash and a low barrel entry proof, all of which increase their costs. Ultimately, based on these factors and quality of the final product, I think the prices are fair, ymmv.
