- As 2018 NBA All-Star Joel Embiid puts it, Wilt Chamberlain was "so freaking athletic". Watch a few clips and listen to a bit of the testimony that indicates this guy was a special world class athlete from his teenage years into his 50's at a variety of sports. He was that athletic even with 300 pounds or more spread over a frame more than 7 feet tall.
Wilt never got the respect he deserved from the NBA. Wilt passed in about 1999 or so and I don't feel the NBA did enough to honor this incredible athlete and basketball player.

I totally agree! Larry Bird also had much less talent around him than Magic. People never talk about that, but Bird would have won more rings with the kind of talent the Lakers were stacked with.

On a personal note, in about 1971 I was watching a Laker game with my dad. My dad was the baddest man I have even met in my life. He was 6'3" and 220 in his prime. He was a bar owner in a rough part of town and cleaned the bar up from bikers, whom he was targeted by and was jumped by 3 bikers (per the leader) -- he kicked the crap out of all 3 and put 2 in the hospital (this is just one of many "incidents"). People (bullies and bad guys) were terrified of him. He was even approached by a couple of mob guys that offered him a job as a collector.
Anyway, my dad told me while watching that game that "...Wilt Chamberlain is the strongest man I've ever seen. He is so strong, he has muscles in his shit."
That's because nobody liked him. At the time at least he was an insufferable douchebag, by all accounts. When he averaged 50 points and 25 boards a game in 61-62, MVP voting was done by the players. Wilt didn't even get close to Russell who won--- he only won 9 first-choice votes out of all 85 players.

When a man like Wilt, who was a freak of nature, records 52 pts, 32 rebs, 24 blks, 11 stls and 14 asts in a single game, then how can you tell me he isn't arguably the greatest ever? The man could do anything he wanted to do on the court and still to this day way ahead of his time. I never judge a player by how many rings since its a team accomplishment, I go by skill set and what facets he brings to the table as he was the complete package.
Tyler Hingleton stats are a bad way to judge players of different eras. This was a league where it was easier to get stats because of of weak comp and the pace of the game of course his numbers look better.
He was the most dominant player of his era and had a good team with Jerry west and still underperformed in terms of rings I understand it's a team achievement but if you're doninqnce doesn't help your team win then what's the point.
Let Me Get Uhhh I don't just look at stats. Like I said before, he mastered every facet of the game and played against some of the greatest big men of all time like Bill Russell, Abdul-Jabbar, Walt Bellamy, Dolph Schayes, Willis Reed, Nate Thurmond, Bob Pettit, Jerry Lucas, Dave Cowens, Bob Lanier, Wes Unseld, Artis Gilmore etc. He used to dominate each and every one of them individually on a daily basis and used to get tripled and quadruple-teamed when getting the ball in the post, so don't tell me he had it easy. The league implemented rules to try and stop Wilt at the time like widening the lane and even allowed opposing players to maul him at will cuz he made the game look so easy. You're judging a past-his-prime Wilt who came back from knee surgery and played with the likes of West and Baylor who were also on the tail end of their careers. I'm talking a prime Wilt with the Philadelphia Warriors and Sixers who was an unstoppable force who always ran into the greatest dynasty in the Celtics who were loaded with Hall of Famers and arguably the greatest head coach in Auerbach. Winning is a team accomplishment and not the ultimate way to judge a great player like I said before. If you want to talk about championships, then Bill Russell is the greatest, and not someone like Michael Jordan. Watch the Wilt Chamberlain scouting report and you'll see what I'm talking about.
A players greatness isn't defined by Championships or rings. Robert Horry won 5 Championships yet hardly
anyone would vote him among the top 50 of all time. Jerry West lost 7 NBA finals yet nearly everyone would

When your from Kansas like myself you better know about Wilt or your hiding under a rock. That's the golden rule. My college coach at Emporia State coached alongside Larry Brown in 88 at kansas. My coach's father and Larry played against wilt in 57 in the national title game. They both played for UNC. If you don't know who Doug and David moe are you do now. Dean Smith was the UNC grad asst at UNC at the time in 57 and Dean played ball at Kansas under only the second coach ever to coach at Kansas and that coach played under the inventor of the game. I grew up in both Baldwin city which is 10-15 miles away and Ottawa Ks which is 20 miles away from Lawrence. I've participated against Kansas 2x with the Emporia St vs Kansas rivalry . And it has a long history. My history in coaching goes back to the beginning of the game. Wilt has always been my guy and the disrespect he got from the NBA was horrible. But he did feel he disappointed Kansas and Kansas Loved him and always will. We we're lucky to see him in 99 on the floor and speak before his death. Wilt is the one guy is love to have met. Wilt is I believe the unquestioned greatest "athlete" to play basketball. The combination of size at a real 7 ft 1 (listed-not in high heels like Dwight Howard), speed and strength we have never seen. He's legitimately a LeBron James just half a foot taller. I'd still say Jordan was the better basketball player, in terms of being a more rounded player, but wilt is easily the better athlete. Shaq came the closest to showing us a modern Wilt, sadly he just didn't have the work ethic outside of the basketball court in terms of staying shape and truly trying to dominate the league rather than just bullying it by being 400 lbs.

Joel Embiid learned a lot about Wilt from Sonny Hill. Hill was one of Wilts best friends from childhood, is huge in Philly basketball and is at all 76ers games with VIP status.

The real kicker is the fact that Wilt was over 7 feet tall and near or around 300 pounds. Now you want to talk having full body control at that huge size yet able to move like someone who's a foot or more shorter and 100+ pounds less. Not many understand how incredible that really is because most of us are nowhere near that physically imposing, and so we cannot relate. Only guys I can think of who can be in the same athletic discussion are Jim Thorpe and Jim Brown.

Arnold schwarzenegger won Mrs Olympia and was a top class culturist but wasn't the world strongest man... Not even close. Obviously he could lift very heavy weights but his goal was gaining maximum equilibrium between volume and definition, not being the strongest.
That said, obviously Wilt (2.16 mts) was and impressive athletes and lifter, but if you see for example Dwayne Johnson (1.91mts) have a similar body and complexion compared to Arnold (1.88) and he couldn't even get close to the 450 pounds (roughly 205kg) Shaquille O'neil (2.16 mts) bench pressed. So is logical for Arnold to being amazed after seen Wilt strength.

Was lucky to grow up seeing him in his prime. He did things I've never seen since on a basketball court, and no longer think I ever will. Jerry West said it best, and with West's background as a highly successful GM after his HOF career, his opinion outweighs any of the kids here who never saw him play. West said if he were playing today he'd lead the league in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots just as he did back in the day.

Wilt is possibly the greatest athelete who ever lived. But he wasn't the greatest basketball player. Forget rings -- just like Shaq, he couldn't shoot free throws for shit. Don't get me wrong, he's still a GREAT basketball player -- for instance I think Wilt still has the record for most field goals successfully made in a row, which absolutely kills the idea that he was just a volume shooter. But to be the greatest, you can't suck at anything.
And MJ, who is honestly probably a greater basketball player than Babe Ruth was a baseball player, and greater than Tom Brady is a football player, and greater than Wayne Gretzky was a hockey player -- for all his greatness and his mental discipline and natural atheticism and tremendous basketball skill, couldn't translate that over into baseball, doing just okay in the minors. On the other hand, Wilt tried out for the Kansas City Chiefs and made the pros look like children in one day. They're both great, but Wilt was greater in a much wider variety of circumstances. Hell, Wilt was even a better actor. MJ was "only" a basketball great.
Even if Wilt only played a single season in the NBA and then retired, he'd still be the record holder for highest points per game and rebounds per game in a season. That's how superior Wilt was.

Wilt really doesn't need help with stories of what he's done, all one has to do is compare him in highschool at 7'2 and someone like Bol Bol that is about the same but measured in sneakers. The athleticism is not even close. You hear about all these 6'10 guys in the NBA. If your 6'8 they say 6'10. 7 footers today are really 6'10 maybe more..Wilt's 440, high jump, shot put and triple jump medals in a major college needs no hyping, it's hard to explain just how amazing that a 7'2 guy could highjump 6'6, hold the Kansas shot put record at 53 feet and more.
Bol was considerably taller actually. If you see pictures of Bol standing next to other top 5 tallest players, you can see that he was the tallest ever. However, Bol was a very thin, petite man for his height, weighing less than 200 lbs when he started playing. Bol did very well considering that he was actually a lot older than his recorded age, but he doesn't really compare to Wilt.

I saw Wilt play LIVE from about 15 feet from the court ! We had front row seats in Portland, Oregon at the Trail Blazers games from 1970 - 1995. Wilt was and is the best basketball player the NBA has ever seen. No one in their prime could challenge him. It is sad that memories are short and video doesn't show the REAL WILT.

People think he couldn't bench 600 pounds and yet they don't look at the mans proportions. Compared him to Shwarzennegger in that photo. He's twice as tall and his muscles are built large, veins popping out like he's a Gymnast. There are guys who look big but aren't strong and than there are guys that are rock solid and are crazy tight, guys like Bruce Lee, like chizeled. The guy looks like he has potential for a 600 pound bench, although he likely doesn't heavy lift. Like Arnold says he does a lot of reps of simple weight which are crazy heavy compared to short people like Arnold.

The reason people think he couldn't bench that much is because tall guys can not bench as much as shorter people because of the longer arms. The tall guys are stronger but it is easier for shorter guys to bench more weight because there is less space needed to perform the movement. Let alone Wilt Chamberlain who was 7'1 with a 7'8 wingspan. I'm not saying he didn't do it but I highly doubt he did that much weight considering he also claimed to also sleep with 20,000 women.
