Finally, a Top Gear review where Clark isn't bashing Toyota. I like how when he mentioned the relatively low bhp, he was conscious to point out that the car's good points override it.
I'm glad that Toyota through this, and the GR86, allowed the working class one last chance to enjoy an aspirational rear wheel drive petrol coupé. Many other brands from Ford, to Vauxhall abandoned it decades ago and soon they will be completely consigned to history.
This is a car where you can reach its limits (and go far beyond them) in real life situations. Not on a track, but on open winding roads. It is meant to be driven there in that manner, without much hassle
Also, as Clarkson himself has said; modding a car might make it faster, but it doesn't make it better. A 500HP supra is operating way beyond what was intended by the manufacturer, which means that the car will have to make sacrifices elsewhere. The physics of engineering are indeed miserly in their accounting. I've never thought a great deal of supras myself, especially the MK3 which is very heavy and handles like a bus, but I have friends who swear by them so I guess it's a personal thing.
Lol, this guy replied to a comment over an entire decade old. This is clearly to you and all of the weeaboos obsessed with the little info they have about the automotive history of Japan***** is what you really mean?
actually, Subaru and Toyota worked together to make the car (subaru made the engine block and toyota made the engine management system, then they both worked together to make the overall standard layout of the car and each made their own small modifications for the subaru and toyota versions. Scion is just another affiliated manufacturer which makes their own version too.
Who ever said that you have to drive like that? point is this car handles so well that you can do anything with it even without having to drive it fast.
I've driven this car multiple times on and off track. It's a literally street legal go-kart. So much fun, but it just feels unfinished..... It needs more power and a better interior. Without that, it's a perfect car for teens who love Anime and a bit out of place for those older than 25.
Oh I am going to wait just not happy about it. I am a huge Miata fan and am looking to build a supercharged one soon. I want to get one and add a fast forward supercharger system to it. I love that kit, it gives the Miata plenty of power without effecting its stock feel. It drove like a normal miata round town but when you got on it, it became a little monster. Best part is that system uses the stock exhaust so no one would guess what you are packing under the hood.
Yup, I stand corrected, they had announced the possibility of an awd with the Subaru brand before they released the car and that fact stayed in the back of my mind...
Actually it was designed in partnership with subaru to divide the costs of developing and testing a new car. Subaru developed the 2.0 liter boxer engine, and toyota became in charge of this amazing chassis! I don't think you're quite right saying that the br-z "has a much more rigid suspension", I think both cars are exactly alike... but that model didn't come out in my country so I can´t tell for sure.
You can slide this car at a 1 or 2 degree angle for a few seconds at will. It s fun and safe when you gain the skill to do so. For most folks I think it is a good idea to leave the Traction control on. Learn on a track or an abandon parking lot how to use the car to its full potential.
Depends on the people. I personally drive an MR2 mk1 and my father a mk3 all summer long. The MR2's have always had very decent performance for the price you paid. The boxster might not be a real stretch at 50k for you, but some people who don't care about speed and just want a different car that has enough performance, is exotic and cheap wouldn't see why they would feel the need to spend double the price for the same type of fun. If a new MR2 comes out for 30k I'll buy it in all seriousness.
Toyota owns Scion. It's called the FR-S. Toyota did a partnership with Subaru to create these cars. The Toyota GT-86, Scion FR-S, and Subaru BR-Z are all the same save for some tuning differences.
The front ends are slightly different along with the suspension settings. The Subaru is also $500 in the U.S. But basically the same car. Basically whatever brand you like better is the car you are going to buy
I've owned several used cars and some new. New cars can come with problems, and while the warranty may cover them, that doesn't make them convenient, or mean the dealers will make it easy to resolve the issue. The only issue I've ever had with a used car was a worn clutch and flywheel. Some cars are lemons, at least second hand you can go through MOTs and service documents to make sure your car is sound, most people who have trouble with second hand cars haven't done their homework.
Interior quality matters to me. I don't particularly enjoy driving in a tic tac box. Also, you can't compare a GTI or an FRS to a Formula 1 car. They are two different things. You're somewhat right about the redoing the interior but still...
Clarkson's hyperbole never ceases. Ages must not be a long time in Clarkson time because I remember him saying the best car he'd driven since the original Golf GTI was the BMW 1M. And that was in Series 18.
I personally prefer the GTI, but mainly because I need the large storage on a regular basis. GTI is a bit faster too, but you can't powerslide it since it's front wheel drive
For the new 2014 MX5, they say it will be 2300 pounds or 250 pounds lighter. The price is going to hold firm. 165 hp 1.4 turbo? 30 mpg city rating. Should be one hell of a car. I would wait. I had to wait 5 years for the BRZ.
i've upgraded my car with lower race suspension, 6piston breaks and some pilot sport cup R tires hold the road just fine it ain't no WRX STi but it will turn a corner.. anyways sometimes you can do all the home work you want you may still get a lemon and no warranty to fall back on and you also have to remember every part on a car is only design to work for a # of miles before it needs to be replaced (i learned that the hard way) so for the money the GT86 is worth it
fun is an equation of grip and power u can reduce grip to increase fun or increase power reduce grip always run ling longs on track and pirellis to the sunday market guys
I had a 2000 Celica it only had 140 hp and I loved it. The 200 hp BRZ was a nice boost. I get the same Gas mileage from day to day. I love mine It is like it has to powerplants below 4k it is a 32 mpg economy car. Above 4.5k it can run with the big boys. I can hit 60 in over 1 second quicker than my Celica GT. Sense when is a 14.9 second quarter slow. Wow. times have changed.
Cool, I kinda wish I'd hung on for a clean 94/95, for some of the refinements. Mine's doing alright but in need of plugs/wires & maybe a PowerFC re-tune etc. Yep, that vid's great!
You're talking to an owner of a '96 Miata, '93 RX-7 & a 2.5L MX-3. I know this. :) He'll no doubt fire back about the lack of power though, or some such nonsense. I've seen RX-7's on bone stock suspension/equal street tires, (with a slightly lower power to weight ratio), eat 458's & the like. I hope to pick one of these up @ some point!!
with less trunk space. Once you go MR you never want anything FWD, nothing is comparable. Celica is definetly not the same as an MR2 and it never will be. Even if they do sacrifice storage space for performance once again for the new MR2, I'm buying. It is absolutely perfect for me, always feel like taking the long way home and tossing it around corners for the pleasure of it, and based on that poll I am not the only one who would buy it or want a new one released. Go look it up for yourself.
well this car would be easier and cheaper to modd over a WRX but i'm buying it as a daily driver but the most i might do to it is a lighter exhaust, lighter rims (same size), street and strip clutch, lighter flywheel, cold air intake and i may install lighter fiber glass body parts if it doesn't mess with the wight balance and looks stock
I knew it! I had been hoping they would force induction from the beginning, I assumed that, it being a boxer engine, they would have bolted on a turbo. I'll take the supercharger though, it would benefit from the even power delivery.
they wanted to keep the price low, its mainly just cosmetics with most parts u can get from ebay (push button start, spoiler, exhaust tips, toyota logo, etc) they assumed the buyer is going to swap out those parts and tune the car anyways)
Yeah I read that... but nothing is sure the MR2 is the one that will be cheaper though... would be weird to have a 2 seat mid engine sports car that's cheaper than the GT86. Back when the MR2 was released in 85 it was more expensive than the Corolla GTS, and the MR2 Spyder was about 25000$ new back in 2000, so I highly doubt they would make it the cheaper now.
In US its called GENESIS. It comes with 2.0L nd also comes with 3.7L turbo engines. Which has a lost more power. And as for domestics, they duck, especially chrysler and ford. Yes ford did get better over past 4yrs. But if you take the notorious 3.8L engines which were used in ford Taurus and Windstar vans. Its nothing but problems once it reaches 70k miles. Domestics have improved, but it still cant go 1,000,000 miles like toyota corolla did. If you didnt know, FoRd is assembled in Mexico.
Anybody already have seen the full video? Which car he was talking about, when said "what on earth they was thinking of, when they build this?" at the end?
I know a bit about what you mean, I'm pretty sure its required now in America too. there are some talks that rear view cameras will be mandatory to prevent the stupid from being run over. makes me sad that my traditional throttle cable'd no abs'd no traction control'd s14 is one of the last of its breed. and it ended production almost 14 year ago.
if you are going to use it as a daily driver don't get a performance clutch and flywheel. Some mods can lead to your warranty being void. At most do a cold air intake and a catback exhaust, if you want a car you can mod go get a used miata it achieves the same goal as this car and is allot cheaper for a used one. then throw a supercharger on it and you got a great cheap fun car.
well well well.. i drive a Supra MK3 with a 2JZ swap (modded) and put out about 450-500whp and i test drove this car and currently i am on the waiting list for one... for a new car its worth the money, but remember when you buy a used car you buy the problems that comes with it
Scion it's the same manufacture of Toyota in USA and Toyota and Subaru made this car the same but a little slit different from the outside but they made it together !!
The car is wonderful, but it's underpowered. They are going to do a twinscroll turbo setup, and that will correct the issue nicely. This car with 285 (and moddable by turning up the boost) will be a world beater.

Because the 86 has a Subaru engine
@@n1ch0l4st8 with a toyota fuel injection though
Well Clarkson did say that one of the best cars he's ever driven was the Lexus LFA.
@moss550M how do you not keep up with traffic in that thing? my civic only has 90hp and i never have any problems
@moss550M does the 86 have long gear ratios then? if even the GTI can keep up.
can't believe this car came out more than 11 years ago
I can't believe that original Top Gear was still around when this car came out.
We old bro. We were there.
I'm glad that Toyota through this, and the GR86, allowed the working class one last chance to enjoy an aspirational rear wheel drive petrol coupé. Many other brands from Ford, to Vauxhall abandoned it decades ago and soon they will be completely consigned to history.
A very impressive car and when considering the price, feeling, handling and fuel consumption, etc, there is no competition. I just love it!
wow its been 11 years since you commented this. did you buy the car ?
For me the main comment is 11 years ago and the comment above me is 11 days ago such perfect timing
@@rustypioquinto1100 yeah lol
That's all of the 86 that was featured on the episode. They go on to talk about the Lexus SC 430 afterwards.

i love how the windscreen is blurred in some of the drift scenes when its obviously not Jeremy Clarkson doing the slide! check it out, you'll see.
I remember TG Magazine showed off cars at the same time as the TV show, so it makes sense
People who have hated this platform for its lifetime clearly don't know how to drive cars and want the car to drive for them.
so good to see another fun car on the market that is affordable
The AE86 isn't a "Drift car" It was just a popular vehicle for Automotive sports. It was in a lot of rally and grip racing as well. Not just Drifting.
Tell that to Japan.
Lol, this guy replied to a comment over an entire decade old. This is clearly to you and all of the weeaboos obsessed with the little info they have about the automotive history of Japan***** is what you really mean?
2023 and I need this. Still prefer looks of this over gr86
thank you. I thought I was the only one. but the GR86 deserves respect as well. It competes against the ND miata still
@shahir1395 this aged well. I just bought one couple months ago. And yes of course
@@90Kennydo you like the car?
@Kramer2727 I love it! 2016 with 70,000 miles, manual. Hopefully it'll last long and is a reliable sports car.
I'm suprised Jeremy didn't complain that the cabin is seriously tight for someone his size... But still, GT-86 ftw :))))))

I own a BRZ. I have heard of the "Cam issue". Not a major problem. There are no replacement parts yet.
2012 white on white, full decat sport exhaust with AVO fensport turbo 😎 15mm drop & 15 mm wide side front and rear splits and absolutely love her ❤

Congrats
Congrats! the FT86 platform is truly one of the best!
Wow. I forgot this car was that old that Jeremy Clarkson reviewed it on Top Gear.
Clarkson was saying on Twitter earlier this year, that the new series of Top Gear wont be until early 2013 due to the scheduling on the BBC
I've driven this car multiple times on and off track. It's a literally street legal go-kart. So much fun, but it just feels unfinished.....
It needs more power and a better interior. Without that, it's a perfect car for teens who love Anime and a bit out of place for those older than 25.
Wow even Clarkson approved?! Im sold
Toyota is probably pretty pleasantly surprised with how positive this review was :)

Biggest thing which people still miss is economy tires, easily the most important part of the recipe
Love It. anyway I prefer naming this is the BRZ b/c it shares the soul and confidence behind the wheel that all Subarus inspire. :).

There are no bad choices, and the differences are relatively minor.
It was also $45,000 for the turbo back in 1993. that is over $70,000 in today's money. Even the base car was $33,000.
It's not from any season but rather from one of Clarkson's special DVDs.
Now that car would be expensive thanks to it's popularity in MF Ghost.
Jeremy would beat Kanata.

They upgraded the tires on the 2017 and up models which made it hard to get sideways, I will be getting cheap tires next

Hi Jeremy to answer your question Toyota was thinking about some mountins and Tofu 😮
how's your RX-7 doing, I got a 94 right now. You seen the vid of the RX-7 vs Porshe GT3 in the Nurburgring? lots of goodness in that vid..
And scion isn't so bad, sure they're not fast but they are fuel efficient and safe, and that means a lot to a good number of people.
Loved this bit: "You can be Ken Block on every roundabout"
I knew it! I had been hoping they would force induction from the beginning, I assumed that, it being a boxer engine, they would have bolted on a turbo. I'll take the supercharger though, it would benefit from the even power delivery.
well not literally based on the AE86 but they took inspiration from it anyway :)
For the GTI ,I prefer the Focus ST and Mazda Speed3.Both of them have storage on a regular basis and faster than GTI~~
It's also a Scion FR-S.
Love my Orange Edition....amazing car ❤
