Imagine an alternative timeline when Alesi had won a WDC with Williams or Benetton in the early '90s? Then he was the one who got the move to Ferrari in 1996 instead of Schumacher. It could have happened.
But in an alternative world, he could be the one that crashed on the Tanburello curve, on May 1st, 1994. Not all alternatives are good.
Except that part of Ferrari's success was Schumacher bringing Rory Byrne and Ross Brawn over. Alesi would have gone to a Ferrari lacking part of the team which created those dominant cars
@@Speeder76 I don't think that crash would have happened with an Alesi title win in 93. Senna would've probably stayed in McLaren or even gone to Benneton and maybe Prost wouldn't retire
I love Jean Alesi. I think he deserves a championship win. But also I think Schumacher is still the right person to be at Ferrari to become a dominant winning team. I've read that Jean Alesi wasn't confident of the handling characteristics of the 1995 Ferrari 412 T2, it has a tendency to swing the rear under heavy braking. But when Schumacher tested it in 1996, he felt more confidence and liked the 412 T2 handling. Schumi said he could've won easier using the Ferrari 412 T2 in 1995 than his Benetton.

To be fair, Giuliano Alesi is now racing in Super Formula, filling in for Kazuki Nakajima, while he is busy with WEC. He actually did a very good job in his first outing at Suzuka about a month ago, his second race is coming up soon.

It's funny how he got the F40. Basically Piquet who helped him when he first started told him to put it in his contract. Then the management at Ferrari were surprised he was so cocky, but kind of liked it so he got one.
I know, that was such a great moment. Piquet also changed other terms in his contract, like demanding an extra $1 million in salary. Piquet seems like a hard guy to get along with, but if likes you, he's a great friend to have lol.
Jesus christ this man is a wonderbox, he is married to a Japanese actress and idol called Kumiko Goto, who starred in Jackie Chan's film City Hunter, a movie that I loved as a kid. Plus, his parents were actually Sicillian not French and that explains a LOT about his personality.

Alesi is just one of those guys you can't but love. Whether you're Japanese, French, Italian, or just simply enjoy good racing or fun personalities, it's impossible to hate that man.
Also his worse than De Cesaris reliability was a running gag to itself. I miss looking for him on TV...

Jean Alesis driving style was phenomenal. He was such an aggressive and fast driver. Maybe the best driver without a championship. If he goes to Williams instead of Ferrari may betoday he would be called as one of the best ever. Think about this fast, emotional driver in Williams from 91 to 97. He would be a real threat for Schumacher and for sure broke the Pole record of Senna. He was a Leclerc of the 90s.

Alesi at Williams from 91 to 97 and with a personal head coach - I mean, for his head, his temper, a psychologist for sure - would easily be a 3x world champion, maybe 4x, and maybe would be cemented as France's top driver, even if alongside Prost. That would be crazy. To have a prime Alesi, Senna and Schumi battling together for a title would rock the late 90's a whole lot. But this is all a big "maybe"...
Poor Moss got played by the Gentleman and Players atmosphere common at the time but one hell of a driver and deserved to be treated a lot better

You should do a WTF happened to John Watson, he was quick in 1982 for McLaren, then he just sort of faded out of existence.

John Watson is a Legend, and I love his commentary on the SRO GT races, frabjulous.
Watson's 1982 season was actually his apex season - he'd been at it a while by that point
Also saved the Penske F1 team's project and got hist first win with them. The team needed a strong figure to keep it going after Donohue's death, and Watson did a lot for them.

He was and will always be my favourite driver. I always loved how passionate he was and how he wore his heart on his sleeve. He was absolutely electric when he entered the sport.

Basically he chose with his heart rather than his head when his stock was high...and never recovered...but at the same time that's why he is beloved and respected
Not really, Ferrari were somewhat decent when he chose to drive for them, he couldn't be expected to know that there would suddenly be an massive swing in favour of Williams. That and the way Williams were dealing with him, he was offered the choice go to a team that clearly wanted him or stick around waiting for a team who seems to be having second thoughts.
1995 was such a happy season for F1 after all the heartache and controversy of 1994 to have popular guys who had been around for several years like Alesi and Herbert winning as well as a first win for Coulthard too really lifted the spirits. For a man so riddled with mechanical misfortune one has to appreciate the irony that a rare piece of Benetton unreliability gifted him his only win. Schumi's my hero but even I was delighted that Alesi won that day and Schumi showing his human side giving Alesi a lift pack on the slow down lap :) Never knew he was linked to Ferrari in 2000, gutted he didn't make the move.

Charles is much more of a ruthless killer than Jean ever was, and he makes very few mistakes. However, he too is stuck at Ferrari, and since nowadays engine development is fobidden ... :/

Kubica and Trulli both good drivers. Do you feel they were potential world champions? I know Alesi was. He was just dealt bad luck throughout his career.

The last few races of 2001 was the Alesi lovefest, was funny thinking back on it as Mika walked away too but everyone assumed it was just going to be a sabbatical and he never came back. So Jean had a better send off by the fans and paddock than a two-time world champ.
This is like seeing the delicious food your mom cooked but u can't eat them because the visitors aren't there yet...

If you want a snapshot of Jean Alesi in one session watch the 1999 Spanish Grand Prix Qualifying. Early in the session he set an amazing time in the Sauber, which Schumacher and Hakkinen struggled to beat, however Alesi couldn't even match the time with his following laps.
So much unharnessed potential.

Secondly Alesi was (and probably still is) a MEGA driver. We love him. In our hearts he's won so many more races than the 1 he actually did !
Passion. Love. Heart over Head. Number 27. Watching F1 for the first time and seeing Alesi do the unbelievable in a Ferrari...well, it created my favourite team, number and series, which has lasted me to this day. It's also created my aversion to winning...
When you consider who #27 is now that suddenly makes a little too much sense
Let's not forget as recently as this year he was leading the historic legends race at Monaco. So surprise surprise with a few laps remaining he ended up hitting the wall racing another competitor along the start and finish straight, ending his race once again. Now whether it was his fault or not and it was very hard to tell, shows us that crazy luck of his, or lack of it, is still right there everytime he climbs into a race car lol.
Jean is still about and involved with F1.
He has been and still is the manager for a number of drivers since his retirement as an f1 driver. He also is a major part of the Ferrarri young drivers program, both as a scout and mentor for the young drivers,,and as an ambassador for ferrarri, along with driving in the historic f1 races.
When you think he brought drivers such as Massa, Jules Bianchi, and Leclerc to Ferrarri's attention, he still is a significant member of the F1 system.
That classic Ferrari at Monaco made me very, very happy. 👌
Stunning talent with Alonso's timing of teams
Jean Alesi was one of my favourite drivers to watch in the 90s along with Mansell, Senna and Gerhard Berger. This was purely because of his racing style, I 100% think he would have been a world champion with a reliable car.
His sole win is the first race I remember watching.
Mercurial is an apt choice of word, well done Josh. He’s the kind of guy I like having around on the grid, but would infuriate me as a team principal. He’s one of these old school, hot blooded, fiery Latin guys who can drive anything, fast and aggressively. Its not hard to see Alonso as a superior spiritual successor to Alesi.

One of my all time favourite drivers. I even had an Alesi replica helmet. F1 needs characters like this.
I was there in Phoenix in 1990 and Alesi made a helluva impression. I was so surprised he only got one win, despite racing for 11 more years. Significantly, when they were teammates at Ferrari Prost was faster.
He moved to rari instead of moving to Williams
Great video, Josh. The dude was a fascinating mess but all but his harshest critic probably agree he deserved more than 1 win to show for his efforts. With that said he was also never boring as a disaster area. Other interesting pieces from Alesi's life include:
- Crashing out of a potential win in Estoril in 1994 attempting to divebomb past rather surprised Simtek driver David Brabham whilst lapping him and taking them both out of the race.
- Being surprised that his super expensive Ferrari was stolen when he once parked it up and left it with the keys still in the ignition and the engine still running.
- Ending his final race being involved in the crash that gave Kimi Raikkonen permanent back problems thereafter, though he wasn't exactly at fault there.
- Suffering a horrific pre-season crash in '94 in which he was temproarily paralysed down the left-hand side of his body and coming back only two races in to the year. Some believe his speed never fully recovered after this one.
- Failing to win a race in '96 in a car many in Benetton were convinced Michael could have challenged for the title in had he stayed behind.
- Selling a Ferrari F40 from his collection to fund his son's failing Formula 2 career. Money wasted given Giuliano's form but still impressive as a gesture.
This had me in tears. Mate your videos go from strength to strength.

Alesi's like a lot of 90's F1 drivers, a lot of speed but a long way from being the complete package so not even close to being a threat to Schumacher on a weekly basis.

Alesi v. Mansell at Williams in 1992 would be one hell of a "what if."
It'd either be a neck-and-neck fight for the title between the two, or Senna would have won another championship because Mansell and Alesi would keep crashing into each other while fighting over the lead.
The more I read about Alesi, the more bummed out I get that my most prevalent memory of him is that time he kept ignoring team orders to pit for fuel, and then had to retire from the race, because he ran out of fuel.

Jean was one of mine favorite drivers when i started watching F1 but schumi is still on the top spot for me I’m curious to find out what really happened to him
the first time i ever got to see f1 live was as a 7 year old in 93 when my parents took me to friday qualy at silverstone.
it absoultely hammered down with rain meaning absolutely nobody came out,
except for one french legend in the most beautiful piece of machinery i had ever seen.
every lap he would come by doing burnouts and waving at the crowd, from that moment onwards jean alesi became my hero.
Jean was fun to watch, daring and aggressive I’ll never forget his battle with Senna in 93 on the main straight in Canada, two very brave drivers Senna won out. His 95 GP win on his birthday was a happy day in Formula 1, in the Ferrari world and with many fans like those in Canada thrilled with his victory!

The one thing in this video I had no idea about was that Alesi was considered as a potential #2 to Schumi for 2000. Is that accurate? What's true is he was on the shortlist to replace Schumacher in 99 after the Silverstone crash. I forget if he declined due to his situation at Sauber or if Todt just preferred to hire Salo, who was a free agent. Even though Alesi and Todt had mended fences after their 95 fallout, Todt might not have wanted to bring back Alesi due to his temperament, despite Alesi's relatively strong standing during his Sauber years after a strong 1998 as team leader.
Would love to see a WTF video on Heikki Kovalainen... because goddamn his F1 career went down the tubes FAST.

I really started watching F1 just when Jean Alesi started racing F1. Guess who my ever favorite driver was.... And obviously the fact that he always had the worst of luck only made him a bigger legend. That one day he did win a race.....it was glorious.
I do miss those times in F1. Nowadays everything has become so much more professional. If a driver would race like Alesi nowadays he would get a ban for life. But also the fact that cars more often than not did break down added so much more tension to the race. To finish first you first have to finish. Few drivers know that better than Jean Alesi...
I remembered alesi as some sort of F1 legend in the 90’s, before I watched this; his results are at odds with how well he is remembered by most people, it seems!

I was shocked a few years ago when I learned he'd only won one Grand Prix. When I was a kid he was running at the front every week, and doing it in style.

A legend. I remember hearing that when he drove home from that race mentioned in the video he was stopped by the Italian police for speeding but once they realised who it was they let him go. Also in 95 there was shocking luck at one GP when the tv camera on the front of one Ferrari came off and then struck the sister Ferrari putting it out of the race. With that sort of luck. We will always have Canada 95

Alesi used to be my favorite to watch in thew 90's. Verstappen was the only Dutchman on the grid but wasn't breaking any pots. Alesi was always fun to watch.
That has to be the strangest way to hold an F1 Steering Wheel I've ever seen. Seems it would be so uncomfortable and yet, he managed Poles and podiums and even a win with that so I guess that was comfortable for him.
they made a special steering wheel for him, because with the "standard" one it was not only a question of comfortability, he couldn't manouver the switchest on the wheel :)

I always remember Jean Alesi was a great starter whether he was 1st or near the back.
He would fly off the grid and gain about 5 places come the end of the first lap.
I was there at the 1st. corner in Phoenix in 1990! Alesi was a SENSATION that year! The Tyrrell was way down on power but 100lbs. lighter than the MClaren on full tanks, it would fly on street circuits, it was even fast at Monza with the rear wing completely trimmed out!
Looking at his F1 results on wikipedia is pretty amazing. The guy pretty much has more DNF's than races he finished.

Been a fan of his since 1990. When I saw Jean at Goodwood driving a 250 GTO, it was akin to a religious experience for me.
