  • The word 'Lancia' in the automotive world brings up an array of different emotions. On one hand, they're known for falling apart and rusting away. But they've also been known for their incredible cars and nigh-on impeccable record in rallying. Today however, they sell only one car and are hardly seen outside of Italy. What the hell happened to them?

Well, you're kinda wrong. The Delta S4 was a rally car developed for Group B regulations for 1986 WRC season, to try and fight the mighty Peugeot 205 T16 which won manufacturers title in 85. In 1986 tho a Portuguese driver crashed into a group of people at Rally Portugal killing I think like 3 people and in Rally Corsica one of the biggest talents of that era - Henri Toivonen driving the Delta S4 went off the road and died with his co-driver, that led to Balstre and the FIA banning the Group B and bringing existing Group A regulations to the top. Thus in 1987 Lancia came in with Delta Integrale and basically they had the best car developed which blow everyone else in the field and won manufacturers championship from 87 to 92.

@@doabarrellroll69 ye it was Peugeot who won manufacturers in 85 and also after some controversy at San Remo Rally 86 (dont remember the story exactly but its all on wikipedia) also won 86 manufacturers, but yea from the three cars, Quattro S1, Delta S4 and 205 Delta was the craziest, the most powerful version had around 600hp with both turbo and supercharger to minimise the turbolag installed. The actual Ypsilon is the Lancia Ypsilon of 12 years ago but with some new details in the interiors or in the look and of course the FIAT 500 engines. It sells a lot beacuse is good in town and because italian car culture is dead with the 2008 crisis where italian governement decided to increase the numeber and price cars taxes (that's why in Italy cars costs more of the cars in many european states or othe states in the world) sports cars and luxury cars were penalizated and many people stopped buying new cars.
FIAT tried to bring back Lancia as a european Chrysler seller failing (they renamend the 300 as Thema, the Thema was a luxury sedan with a Ferrari engine), if someone want to task me why FIAT did that.the answer os that FIAT always has bad commercial idea.

@@martijnp4313 Errr the Dialogos concept car which inspired the Thesis was beautiful. I'm afraid the Thesis is a botch job in comparison.
Insurance companies warned that unless the front grill was raised out of harms way from parking dings, they'd place the production car in a higher insurance bracket than its rivals. Limp-wristed Lancia management forced the designers to comply. Not satisfied with that, internal management meddling also put paid to the svelte shoulder creases and character lines on the Dialogos, which reduced to slab-sided nothingness on the Thesis. All on the whim of the design illiterate Lancia CEO!

    Just some detailing:
    1) LANCIA was effectively shut down by FIAT in favor of ALFA ROMEO during the early '90s, when the company decided to pursue a different brand image through racing ALFA ROMEO at the DTM, which still had a FWD but was based on a much more "sellable" platform, the Alfa Romeo 155, which was a front wheeling car on the market
    2) LANCIA kept on producing low volumes car for police forces and, mainly, key figures of the Italian government
    3) "Ypsilon" is the italian spelling of the letter "Y". At the time of the launch back in 2003 it was some sort of a breakout car among young females, and has been kept alive through 2020's basically just for the italian market
LANCIA, as well as ALFA ROMEO, are just proof of the very short sighted management performed by the FIAT group.
God bless Luca Cordero Di Montezemolo for saving FERRARI, otherwise it would have ended in the same bad fashion of these 2 once glorious brands

    Lovely video, Josh!
Some stuff that you got wrong about "Warthog" Ascari's demise:
He died riding a Ferrari 750 Monza Sporstcar, not a D50. You might got confused with the crash he had during the Monaco GP, where he went to the bottom of the Mediterrenian Sea with his car! Three days later, he was in Monza and got his fatal crash.
In fact, he wasn't suppose to be there. They thought he would rest after that crash, but as he only suffered some bruises, he was in Monza watching Eugenio Castelotti driving that car. At lunchtime, he asked Ferrari to let him driving the car, he spun out and the car fell over him. The Variante Ascari was named, not only at his honor, but because it's the place of his fatal crash.

Dear Josh great ,great work BUUUT the Delta S4 was the replacement for the 037 in Group B after 1984 , the S4 raced in the 1985 and 86 seasons and in the latter a fatal accident occured to the Delta S4 driven By Henri Toivonen with Sergio Cresto at the Tour de Corse Rally stage , Balestre decided to cut off Group B in favor of Group A. So Lancia entered the Delta 4wd , then all the later models that ended with the almighty Delta Integrale of the early 90s ! :)
