Why I bought a RED camera

  • I bought a RED Epic-X Dragon 6K... used. For a steal!
Did I get completely stoked about getting this camera, absolutely!! I have dreamed of getting a RED since getting into filmmaking. But I can safely say I didn’t get a RED just because I was excited about getting a RED.
In order for you to understand why I made this investment we have to back up a bit.
What do I mainly shoot? I have 3 main niches I am focused on.
    Weddings, Commercials, and Real estate.
With that being said, my canon R and 1DXii are PERFECT for shooting Weddings, and Real estate [for most of the houses I shoot]
So that’s solid I’m set right? Well kinda.
Most of the work I have been doing in the commercial field has been small businesses. Small businesses that don’t have super big budgets to hire large production companies or really high-end DP’s. I wanted to start working on campaigns for these larger companies with bigger budgets.
So I was basically in a chicken and egg situation. Which comes first?
This is the conclusion I drew after much thinking. I needed to get a USED entry level cinema camera [wasn’t really interested in the Blackmagic Pocket 6K], and bc I would be getting it used I was planning to get a great camera, spending between 3-5k.
Honestly I wasn’t even considering getting a RED bc I figured it would be waaaay out of my budget. Then I found mpb .com
This video isn’t sponsored btw lol
I was searching their used cinema camera selection when I saw they had some Red’s. I clicked to look at the price and they had RED's ranging from $4-12k

Congrats. Only problem is that RED doesn't service or sell any parts for DSMC1 bodies. If anything happens you end up with a brick. I'm really pissed at RED for abandoning their customers. A 10 year old Arri Alexa EV is still serviced by ARRI and you can buy any part for it from ARRI. I hope you got the RED cheap and I hope it serves you flawlessly for many years. Cheers!

You have any dropped frame issues? I heard about a bunch of these issues and more hardware related ones on the MX sensor models a while ago so steared clear of RED, i'm either going way below their prices or spend a bit extra and get an older Arri.

I’m rooting for you bro 😎 high end commercial work unfortunately does require higher end tools. Not to get the job done, because we all know a small mirrorless/DSLR can get the job done, but it’s more about business presentation. Walk onto the filming location with a RED vs an EOSR put clients at ease, as well as you as the Dir/DP as well. It gives you this false sense of notoriety, which sounds bad when just said openly on the surface, but for some reason people just move with more of a purpose when you look the part. Which in turn can produce a more polished end result.

I had the canon c100 Mark II which was an awesome all around camera, and this year I started getting way more music video gigs and I wanted to upgrade for something with more high dynamic range and more flexibility in post. My budget is also 5k but I’m just worried about reliability with the Red MX’s. @@coreyandolina5392 hahaha, trust me the RED Scarlet/Epic MX image is quite good although it's an old sensor as compared to the 6k Dragon sensor, my thoughts are maybe to hold on and save a bit for money jump on to the Red Raven, that way you will have fewer reliability issues and technical support is available, I'm also having troubles in making up my mind whether I should just drop the scarlet and move to a new camera like the raven but if I'm to dump the Red idea them a BMCC 6K will be a good one.

The R5 will definitely be a beast of a camera! Might even be upgrading my 1DXii to get the R5.
