Let us know what you think of the RED DRAGON down below and if you want us to take a look back at a specific camera from years past, let us know below!
Can you have a competition between the Panavision Genesis and an iPhone 14 Pro Max? If not the Panavision Genesis, the Thomson Viper?
Will you make a video fore red scarlet w or comparing video for old red cameras which you have in your hand.
How would you all say the dynamic range stacks up compared to the Komodo?
Best RED Sensor ever.
Dragon truly is/was perhaps the most important sensor RED released. It was the sensor that many film focused DPs looked at very hard to transition further or fully to digital. Including myself. Dragon 8K VV also paved the way for Monstro and now Raptor. Very much a format I enjoy a great deal.
Dude I still shoot on a Dragon sensor and my clients are crazy-happy with what I produce for them.
That RED sensor is a beast. I'm not exaggerating when I say I have NEVER had a single problem with my RED in the nearly 7 years I've owned it.
I can shoot clean 2,000 ISO images all day. Well.... interior images.
Awesome sensor. I edited and graded the pilot episode of a series shot on it, and I remember the director being livid seeing one shot appearing out of the camera completely overblown and unusable. I showed him how much we could get back with the R3D and the shot was used and director very happy. 🎉
Do you have a link to that footage? Thanks for sharing this amazing story
I absolutely love my dragon, picked one up last year for the price of a komodo when they were out of stock and in high demand. I was super happy with my choice, I had the chance to use the komodo a bit and found I definitely preferred the look of the dragon's sensor better. The komodo and also the raptor I feel have a much more crisp and "digital" feel, while the dragon's images felt much more cinematic imo. I would argue that it is definitely worth it even through 2023. Great video :)
I always felt the Dragon was RED's most cinematic sensor. I got my Scarlet-W in 2016 - still looks fantastic.
Hey. I am undecided between a Scarlet W or Komodo. Which do you think I should get?
@@joshdiditt they're both great but i feel the scarlet w is more of a complete cinema camera where the komodo is more of a b cam/crash cam.
Such an amazing sensor! The media was the biggest reason I never invested in DSMC2. Happy with my Komodos though! Great video as always.
My all time favourite, 10 years old and still blows a lot of new camera sensors out the water.
I still have two dragons sitting in the equipment room gathering dust... haven't used them in ages.
Maybe I should revisit them.
Would you sell one?
I've had a few reds in my time.
Scarlet and Epic Mx, and recently the Scarlet Dragon. I loved all of these so damn much, but luckily in the next week I'll have myself a good Epic Dragon kit at a great price. Unless it breaks down it will be my only camera for theatrical style work.
So excited! Best sensor aesthetically they've made by far.
Great video, man. Stunning b-rolls indeed. I was able to see the Dragon at the BSC and it was definitely impressive. Super cool meeting you as well! Cheers from Italy
I still have my Dragon! Love it.
That basically sums up why I shoot on DSMC2. Great video as always!
love this quality breakdown
I literally have a brand new Dragon X 6K that I bought right as covid hit so I never got to really use it. After covid I was doing so many Multicam shoots on my 5 Sony FX3s that my red just literally stayed in the case sitting there doing nothing. Fellow filmmakers bought all my accessories to the cam so I never really took it out again. After seeing this video, I might have to open up the case and buy a couple of mini mags and actually take it out for a spin. I bought the Dragon cause I always thought this sensor just looked so amazing compared to other sensors.
I also agree with you that this Dragon sensor is the best Red ever made. I love the picture come out from this sensor more than the new sensor in recent Red camera now.
Loved my epic dragon back in the day
i have one and i still love it! i use it all the time and pair it with my komodos and its great!
Awesome camera. Really nice. Performs well when next to the newer REDs like the V-Raptor.
It’s such an awesome camera still! Thanks for watching Connor. Jake
To this day, dragon is one of the only red sensors I like. I shoot komodo as a b cam coupled with scarlet w dragon a cam. I prefer the image to Komodo and monstro
Why do you prefer the Scarlet w to the Komodo
@@osasidaeproductions3759 better sensor . It produces a more pleasing image. Highlight rolloff is better.
@@osasidaeproductions3759 bro the Scarlet W looks so much better than Komodo...
After upgrading to ARRI Alexa, we just sold our RED Scarlet-W 5K (under 300 operating hours) with the basic accessories like side handle, top handle, monitor, & v-lock expander for €5.000. It kinda hurt given how much we paid in 2018 for that package new but it was bought by some young filmmakers who just really wanted the Scarlet specifically vs. the Komodo. What do you think: Did we let ourselves get robbed or was it acceptable?^^ (Between ARRI and an FX6, we weren't really using it that much anymore so likely wouldn't have paid off with rentals or on productions.)
Excellent and thorough review. So many options with the RED DRAGON X and there are repair shops etc.. Aliexpress has new bodies for $2,353 and one thousand available. RED didn't sell as many cameras as they would make you think. Now NIKON purchasing RED a lot of promising technologies coming our way. Probably in six months.
Oh, the 8K Dragon did exist and still does.
precisely. Haven't seen one in the wild yet though.
You guys should do one on the Gemini,
I love this sensor, 6K is the sweet spot IMO.
there's just something about the DSMC 2 bodies that I prefer over the newer ones. When you're using it, you feel like you're using a true RED. The newer bodies (although the performance is amazing) just don't have that kind of feeling.
the way they made the monitor for this body is way better and robust than the raptor
Very curious to see a side-by-side comparison between the Dragon X 6k and the Komodo. I decided to invest in the Komodo due to price and mounting flexibility, but every now and then I wonder what would have been if I went with the Dragon X instead... the frame rate options are certainly more impressive than the Komodo's.
give and take, frame rate for global shutter. But the dragon has amazing shutter angle anways that you don't get much rolling shutter anyways even on anamorphic footage. Sometimes I look at peoples work on the Komodo and I think it looks amazing. I'll try to do one for you down the line if I get a hold of one.
I wonder also. I have the Komodo but it looks to digital
@@barrywilliams2881 I find that the Lens choice makes a massive difference regarding the look from cinematic to digital look. Photography Lens like RF canon lenses gives a crispy ultra sharp digital look while a Cooke or Atlas lenses or Vespid primes give a much more “cinematic” look. There is a good lens choice for any planned output but it is best to rent different lenses to ensure you understand how much glass (outside of lightning) influences the output.
I would like to see your opinion on several zcams:)
I would hope it still produces good results if it's still working like it was originally. It's like those "is ? still good in 202?".
James if you had to pick one: Gemini or Dragon-X?
My main camera !!! And gh6 as b. I found a lut that transforms and match perfectly
Do you still provide service and repair to DSMC2 systems?
I chose the dragon X over the raptor and for the moment I don't regret, the files are huge on the raptor even il LQ (I didn't try ELQ yet, I would love to see some test)
If I bought it I would never shoot 8k, maybe I will switch to a raptor gemini went it come
I haven't seen any dsmc2 red cameras on your website, do you stil have have some?
i Startet withe the DRAGON - X Kit and upgradet it to Gemini.
The RED filming look was much more present on Dragon sensor. The Gemini is from feeling more like a Future proof camera with a non characteristic look. Super Noiseless and for every shoot the greatest way to go. Now you have the option to create your own look out of camera.
For me, DSMC2 is a perfect system and end product. So I would say my next camera will be a RED DSMC 2 again.
There is no future proof camera.
@@konstantinosstag6436 thats not true.
Big Hollywood films are filming with original Film cameras.
Just newer models but the technic is the same like 1900.
For the most cinema DOPs is RAW and 24FPS enough to make big movies.
Full HD is enough for Films. You can push the resulution but you are become not more color information or a better picture with new cameras.
My main camera for Photos is a 12 years old Canon 60D. With my Cine lens on, this thing outperform new camerasystems easily. Clear colorful picture noiseless. It don't have 400.000ISO but with skill, ISO 400 and a good lens is all what you need. 😊
Every Camera is Futureprooof. Because all what you can make better is your Skill and no revolution. 😃
I purchased DSMC1 Red Epic Dragon years ago. After selling that I have been using an Ursa Mini G2 for personal work and renting others when needed. Still to this day that Dragon has been my favorite camera. Now I’m selling my G2 and trying to decide what to get next. I don’t want an FX6, Komodo or C70. I feel like my G2 is better than them in terms of image quality. Also Komodo has limited hfr. So I’m trying to decide between the Gemini and the Dragon. I have a feeling that Gemini will have a bit more demand than Dragon but I may be wrong. Before watching this video I was leaning towards Gemini but this video got me thinking.
@@osmanarslan6364 the dragon sensor have more Punchy colors. Thats true. But i love the Gemini so much.
On a room without sunlight, just bulbs, you can easily Film in ISO 500 with F4 objektiv. And when the light is away, go with the Low Light ISO mode and ISO 1.600 (3.200 is in the most cases way to bright). Again, with f4 objektiv.
Thats crazy.
Yes, there is noise but it is so much less than the dragon sensor in a room with bulbs and a f1.8 objektiv.
wasn't the Gone Girl filmed on it? it's amazing
I’ve actually been looking at this camera on the used market - hopefully it doesn’t skyrocket in price now! 😂
hia, the price is 15.000 camera kit in b&H
IFyou get a Red moncrome Dragon sensor in your hands…the best to film would be the a short documentary of Ukraine experience’s, but I guess that’s of of budget….But it would awesome in B&W /mono. Good luck to convince your boss;)
there is a well know but for ALL Dragon X cameras: if you set 6K full frame @ 50fps (timeline 25fps), you can't playback the video in camera! RED Know very well!
Fast forwards to now, do you still advice these setup ? Regarding support from Red and Media accessibility ?
There are repair shops available and plenty of accessories etc.. Incredible prices available now. RED KOMODO is way overpriced now.
Do you guys know what the real dynamic range of the dragon sensor is? Has it been tested? Or is the 16,5 stops by RED realistic?
Don’t know for sure but my Red Raven has an HDR-X mode and It seems to have massive dynamic range. So much push in the shadows while keeping highlights in tact
It's the best of all worlds camera in my opinion. Newer colors then. it's predecessor and lowlight wayyyy better. Less digital than the raptor IMO because of the olpf bypass filter and frame rate capability. Not 8k 120 but can find an awesome deal on them now as opposed to the brain alone being purchased at 25k 9 years ago. Even the DSMC1 (when lit right) still looks amazing. Both love light. Nice review
Will you bring the Red V-raptor XL on the channel? With all types of tests footages along with it? Would love to see that.
Fingers crossed, our next video should be a comparison overview video between the regular and XL RAPTOR! Jake
@@CVPTV Will love that!
the best like always
Thanks for watching Ahmed! Jake
Am I mistaken when saying that every DSMC Dragon 5K can be upgraded on the RED site to 6K? I am correct right?
WOW PRICE ON THA CAMERA ?
9 years ago. Holy shit
😩😫
informative 9 mins thanks CVP.
Compared a used Dragon vs a Komodo, what would you say produces a better image?
I own both. I prefer dragon due to much better real dynamic range, better frame rates and more filmic image. Komodo looks great, but in most circumstances my canon r3 in raw and even c70 perform nearly as good.
Komodo. Because of motion cadence and global shutter. DR is almost the same. "Filmic look", noise patterns/film grain you could add with the Dehancer or same stuff. Also not so heavy and power hungry with much cheaper media and built-in remote possibilities.
I prefer the dragon over the komodo, I find more depth on the image, komodo looks like a dslr (with R3D)
Buy my first red camera it’ll be my main camera so I’m looking for one preferably like the Komodo that has an auto focus feature for Kimbo work and such and I was wondering also how it’s stacked up to the Comodo and if I’m better off looking at the Komodo rather than the epic
is this the same sensor as a scarlet weapon ?
Scarlet was available with either Mysterium or Dragon sensors. Jake
Scarlet-W DSMC2, yes. Scarlet Dragon DSMC, yes. They both have different data rates, frame rates, compatibility, and resolution capabilities.
and I still cant afford it lol, at the price RED is asking for... it better be perfect...but in reality its not especially for the over priced accessories to even get the brain able to shoot on set
I assure the the accerosies are worth the price. As a former Epic W owner and now Komodo, RED aks have a quality to them that nothing else really does. IYKYK.
@@user-zv7lm8uk7h a 5 inch LCD monitor for 1500 and regular SSD in a mini mag is crazy… then to turn around and need a card reader specifically from RED… sounds like Apples ecosystem. A money monopoly to help you keep on spending and then a couple years later doesn’t hold nearly the same value as you initially spent the first year.
@@ChimeraVisuals Hey bor I am not going to argue with you. the SSD thing, sure, I dont know, whatever. I used red since the red one, did a short stint on blackmagic after I sold my epic-w8K, and now am back at komodo. If you have used red, I ASSURE YOU the "$4,000" Red monitor I used to own, was WORTH IT. The AKS they produce I ASSURE YOU are VERY HIGH QUALITY. Yes, I suppose, like Apple. But higher.
Like no matter WHAT COMPANY I buy cages, handles, clamps, from, nothing comes close to the RED BRAND actual items. Everything feels cheap compared to the RED aks.
@@user-zv7lm8uk7h no argument, just my opinion I love the image quality that comes out of the dragon sensor.
Better than Sony cameras all day
Sony F35 produces such a beautiful filmic image that any of RED's camera couldn't replicate
@@UCG7 cut it out Lmaoo
💐 ᵖʳᵒᵐᵒˢᵐ
Red has great cameras but 1) their holding the camera industry back with their stupid patents 2) once you get into their ecosystem they screw you over with inflated prices for accessories because it’s “made for Red”. I would love a red camera, but I don’t want to support them
You do realize that's more an issue with the us patent office that enabled them than an individual company, right? I could say the exact same about litepanels as for a time, they held almost comically vague and sweeping patents on led lights for film and media. In the end, it's not an individualistic problem, it's systemic. Also, I agree that red accessories are ridiculously overpriced, but I can say the same to other brands in this space, like have you seen Sony? $5k for a viewfinder? $4k for 1tb of media that's not especially fast compared to other cheaper media? The fact red tried to go for what's acceptable for the "professional" market in the prosumer market probably created this shock as people correctly called it as being ridiculous, but let's keep in mind it's not only red.
But what about the fact that Red NO LONGER SERVICES THAT SENSOR OR BRAIN
Redmags are still the dumbest product in the entire film industry
Jake. I have an issue with your title. Why would you say the dragon still produces a good image? You act as if you returned the camera to Red and they broke your sensor and returned it to you. If the camera isn’t damage why would it not still produce a good image. You UA-camrs are titling these just for clicks and we get it. But come on. You title should be how the dragon still compares to todays red cameras. That’s more accurate. Seeing these titles makes me not wanna click it
We had so many titles written down. I don’t want to click bait and I feel like our titles skirt the line between bait and accurate. Unfortunately we have to play the UA-cam game. I don’t read it as you do, but appreciate how you have perceived it. My thought with it was that 9 years on it still produces great looking imagery, nothing about it being broken. Jake
