Oh I have had my fair share of chocolate gravy they served it at school in rural Missouri... Many cold mornings i was excited to see it on the menu....
Melissa, just watched the video of you and Dad at his cabin...awesome...grew up on a dairy farm in central Vermont with extended family with us, Moms parents, Great Aunt and an Uncle...they brought the horse team from grandfathers farm to our farm and they were a big team...they loved the breakfast grain then it was time to work...they were Belgians, blonde manes and tails and super smart...would pull the hay wagons, manure spreader, harrows and ploughs...they each got a bath on saturday night and took to resting on Sundays...great life style...Cheers from Maine
These are the best Christmas videos! A great true story, family holiday history, and a historical recipe. All made with Love! My favorite recipe books are the antique and vintage church lady cookbooks😊
My mom made chocolate pancakes for us as a special treat. She would make regular pancakes and when she had about a 1/3 of the mix left she oils add in the cocoa and a little sugar. We loved them.
chocolate gravy was alway a great treat for us growing up in eastern KY in the 1960's. My sister and her daughter still makes it, and everyone in the family still enjoy it.
I grew up having this as a special treat as well. I made it for my kids too. Chocolate gravy and homemade biscuits are a lovely holiday treat, tradition and memory.
this looks delicious and I'm sure your Dad really enjoyed this as a Christmas treat back during the depression. I remember my Grandmother telling me about those times and she said they would get an orange in their stockings at Christmas and that was their gift... and they looked forward to that and LOVED it because it was so special.
My Mom used to make a chocolate gravy when she made persimmon pudding. We never used whipped cream like so many others back then did. I have her recipe for persimmon pudding which my late wife learned to make to perfection, but I never knew how she made the chocolate gravy. I remember she used Hersheys cocoa in it. Now if I could just get these two recipes together! Thank you for this!
My godmother used to make me biscuits and chocolate gravy!! Awww, thanks for the reminder. She’s been gone for 10 yrs and I think it’s time to pull that out of the pantry.
Made these this morning to go with our sourdough biscuits. My husband looked really doubtful about how it would turn out, but gotta say he and the kids ended up devouring them. So good!
To a hungry person even bitter things seem sweet. I miss my mom’s tomato gravy but I can’t seem to remake it to taste as it did when I was a child. Mom put a lot of love in the “make do” recipes.
Mom made chocolate gravy for me and my sister for breakfast as a stick to your ribs dish before catching the school bus. On cold mornings it was awesome. If she didn't have time to make biscuits we poured it over a slice of bread. Thank you for the recipe and bringing back wonderful memories.
I learned to make chocolate and biscuits when I married my husband 35 years ago. His great grandmother made it and it has been passed down through the generations! Such a treat ❤🙏🏻
so excited to watch this and get the recipe. My dad talked about having chocolate gravy as a special treat as well. He made it for us once when we were kids, but I never got his recipe. Thank you!!
We never called it chocolate gravy, but my mom always made homemade chocolate pudding and while it was warm, put it over homemade buttered bread for breakfast. Mmmmm...a yummy childhood memory!
We need to hear and LEARN of the Pioneer ways… my Dad passed suddenly two years ago and how I dearly miss his stories of the True Off Grid homestead life… keep bringing us this type of invaluable content! ♥️
Thank you Melissa for the great podcast today and your sponsor. Their products are wonderful and supportive of their efforts ,I was hoping to grab one of your books off their website as well. Please keep sharing-family traditions and memories, younger viewers wish they had more family around them and share family Heritage, And how it was back in the old days. Many blessings to you and your viewers.
My dad makes chocolate gravy every Christmas morning. My grandma made it for them and he loved it so he passed it on to us. To me that's just Christmas time, when you smell chocolate gravy and biscuits baking in the oven. 😋
This is a family tradition in our family too!! My Memaw would make chocolate gravy anytime she knew we wer coming to visit, Mom would make it as well on occasion for me and for my girls :) and now they expect it anytime they are staying over on a wintery holliday :) I make mine a little darker chocolate and a little less sweet than back in the day, and replace half the sugar with stevia because mom is diabetic. also a dallop of butter on the biscuits... soooo yummy Thank you for sharing, it is always a pleasure to see your videos pop up :)
My grandmother was almost 99 when she passed away she started housekeeping in 1912 she made her biscuits right in the flour barrel my mother said the flour was completely clean when she finished with biscuits and she also said her biscuits was the best in Miles around in the hills of WVa - on her chocolate gravy she never added flour she would cook it down till it thicken up some
OMG. That Looks FANTASTIC. Our kids would go crazy with that. Because they Love to have Biscuits and Nutella or Nutella with what ever comes. 😊😊😊😊Thanks for sharing. And Best regards from Germany. 😊
I remember my Grandma making it one time. She had 3 boys younger than me, so she didn't get much chance to be grandmotherly! Got married young. Family illnesses and more. Young people had to grow up fast.
I always prepare a bread pudding on Christmas Eve and bake it in the morning. This would be wonderful on that! Unfortunately, I have a couple of GF, DF DIL's now. I'll have to figure out a different recipe for them. Any suggestions anyone?
I wanted to but your magazine. When I hit “buy” it took me to “sign up” I’m sorry , I over having to “sign up” to buy a book. If it comes out elsewhere, I’ll get it. Just no more getting the app, signing in, signing on , logging in or whatever else just to buy a book. Love your vids.
The video description says shop this post and has a link directly to the book, the blog post has a print recipe button at the very top of the article, I don't know how to be more helpful than that 🤷 this is the link from the video description to the book melissaknorris.com/handmade-book
The powder milk is ironic. A lot of people used their government commodity powdered milk to make chocolate gravy. It just wasn't the same as whole milk to drink or for cereal.
Don’t you just hate those measuring cups that don’t play nice. Even the large ones where they don’t pour out without dribbling all over the counter or the stove.
The expectation to receive and the obligation to give gifts has been so tied to the Holy day of Christmas by retailers wanting more monetary profit. It's quite sad. People do so much to not let their kids down, when we should really be teaching non materialism. THAT would be of more benefit than going into debt trying to buy non affordable material objects.
Slightly different family recipe, but I grew up eating chocolate gravy and biscuits. So good.

That's awesome! Is her recipe similar to Melissa's?

2 questions please .. what kind of pans do you use?
Storing - Can you serve this cold later, or save and reheat?
Lovely lesson. Thank you.

Wheat usually costs most of all
Except for exotic grains (quinoa, etc)

Northern western Washington State
