Hovak is hands down a great father and teacher. Nothing but positive encouragement for Ellen. My two favorite things he says in this video: "Play what sounds good to YOUR ears" and "You killed it!" He laughed at that moment with the same joy that his talented daughter does.

I had a non musical father and a slightly musical mother, but if they were even slightly like Hovak I would be a much better greater musician today. However in a much different way (non musically) my dad was just like this. All of us kids are very good at the things we do. And it's because a man, just like Hovak, was a teacher, a father, a mentor, a very good leader. This is why Ellen loves to play and will be far greater than anyone twice, three times her age. Leadership is the key!!!

This far beyond a bass improvising lesson. This is a masterclass by Hovak on how to be a parent, teacher, and mentor.
This child has the natural talent, instinct, and passion to play the bass. But it will be because of her loving father, patiently guiding and training her, that she will eventually bloom into the best musician she can be.

The utter connection between Hovak & Ellen is soooooo great to see and seeing it settle in. Where Hovak’s a blessing for Ellen to have as a musical teaching father, Ellen is a gem to all of us in how she learns and how she get’s exited about new learned stuff. So incredibly valuable! And very cute to watch also. Very nice exercise this and she picked it up very fast. Probably one of the most important lessons in playing: play by ear-training. Everyone should learn this lesson over and over again. Hovak you’re a master-teacher!

Hey Ellen, just wanted to thank u for being u, not that u had a choice. I'll be 61 this Christmas, the 29th Dec. I started playing my first instrument about 9 months ago, an alto sax, which I LOVE so much. Obviously not gonna tour with.....whoever, but being able to read music/play music has been a dream of mine since I was a kid.....but I had zero self discipline/it was way too hard/I was too lazy. So 45 years later I finally am sticking to it. My mom also loves sax and unbeknownst to her I had learned, kinda, "Summertime" and played that for her on her birthday this year. So I just wanted to thank u for the inspiration and joy u share with all of us. Besides being amazingly talented the joy and happiness that pours from your little soul is just so beautiful. Keep on rocking' my little friend! U are truly an inspiration to us all! ~ Best, Todd~ PS....u are also so much fun to watch! PPS.....your dad is super awesome too, wish we all had a dad like yours! Hugs

Awesome job hovak, she did a deadly job feeling it. Singing is the key to improvising and also she did better with her eyes closed. When she's not looking for validation she does better by not seeing you. Notice her shoulder was lifting when it felt good to her. Once she knocked off her sight she felt it more. Less conscious of your presence. She did awesome the more she does this the more she'll connect to the instrument

Hovak you are a master instructor. You truly understand Ellen and how to best build her talent. The method of singing first not only built up her thought skills, but by having her sing louder built her self esteem and courage. Particularly in a public setting. This is something that is missing in sooo many young girls lives. Playing their instrument is only part of the experience. Having the confidence to play what they feel is as important as knowing how to play.

    • @simduino
      @simduino Рік тому

In reality what he's teaching is how to connect the mind to the fingers, one thing is to play bass knowing the scales and notes, another is to know exactly which note your mind wants. I know this is how it works because I can't read music, I play completely by ear. Improvisation is just that, play what your mind comes up with.

I don't know if this will help. But I used to try and mimic the sounds of different instruments and then play what I envisioned their solos to sound like with my voice. It not only helped with playing, but made me a much better singer, helped with my timing, and pitch. The progression after that went to playing and singing the solos at the same time. Not everyone can do that. It is a great skill to have though. I started teaching myself to do this when I was around Ellen's age. I had no one to teach me. It just came to me one day. It became an invaluable skill set to teach others with. From that point forward I could practice in my head without the instrument being around. You are a great teacher Horvath. I wish I had someone like you when I was coming up. You go Ellen!

He asked how I could play so well and I told him I had music memory, could play nearly anything just by listening. Improvise ...
Play whatever you feel like playing. There are no rules! You are the artist, you can paint the sky purple or green if you like. There is no wrong way to it.
One secret though: you don't need to be good for anybody, just have fun and play whatever feels good to you. If it feels good to you, it will feel good to everyone else
    Best of luck to you!

Dude, no wonder Ellen is so good! You're teaching is remarkable. You're able to conceptualise what's being taught and make it transferable to other real life scenarios/situations. Very holistic, and remarkable teaching and learning... Nice work brother, thanks for making this...keep it up :)

improvising is when there is no plan but the only plan is what you have in your soul, in your heart and of course your inspiration.

After he gave "more instructions" like "be more free" her natural creativity became a lot more reserved and she started trying to do what dad wanted... but the very first thing she did... was from the heart. Also, her instinct was to tap a rhythm with her hands... this is a natural way to find the pulse - on which one can improvise very easily. If she were allowed to tap, if that were explored more like "let's try to sing on the notes that you are tapping"... she would've improvised a magnificent solo. Then he can teach lets try "painting notes" over quarter note hand taps, or 8th notes for the hand taps, and eventually 16th notes... or 'let's try giving those hand taps a swing feel"... "now let's paint over the notes". Really happy to see this kind of teaching... but... in the end children are just MUCH more creative genius and in tune with their spontenaity and improv than adults realise. Unfortunately, a few really nice explorations were shut down.
"Don't tap" and "you need to sing on key" - should be TAP if you like... sing ON THE TAPS if you feel like... and SING on key if you FEEL like singing on key.. otherwise... Sing OFF the key if you feel... The other thing is... Dynamics is alsoooo the creative choice of the improviser... "if you want to sing a quiet note then sing a quiet note"... "if you feel like to shout, then shout". All you need to do is stretch in improvisation - "if you like" you can play really really quiet... and if you like you can play really really loud. Allow the student to hear and feel what it's like to explore both. Stretch them to play both quiet and loud so they know how it FEELS to play the full spectrum of where they can play. Same with fast and slow, stretch in both directions, really fast, really slow... etc... then just play how you feel now.
Encourage a little "sillyness", tapping the lobe of the bass is an amazing choice! Even the great improvisers might take a life time to reach that point of playfulness. "If you feel like scratching the strings with your nails, then do that, if you feel like letting your hair fall on the strings and trying to play it like a violin , then do that..." It doesn't take long to realise what sounds you LIKE to make and what you don't like.
Be free - and don't let anyone (not even your dad) define a boundary for you. Improv is not something you "learn"... it's a never ending journey. So the father should not come from a place of authority - he has to because it's his video on how to improv.. but it's not necessary for learning improv. Even her original definition of what improvisation is... was great... This father... said... "no"... then repeated what she said... so... he's apparently afraid to make a video in which he is not the teacher.
This improv video, would be one video where Ellen could've easily shown him a few things and she STARTED to... but it was too uncomfortable for dad to record the video like that.. and allow the girl to "know more" than him. Creativity gets more blocked up with age. The whole purpose of improv and creativity is to see where people have set boundaries for you and step over the boundary in a playful way... (as Ellen did!) show them how to free themselves from the limitations they have put on themselves. So I hope you do tap that ear lobe of the bass again... and I hope you sing as soft as you like... and I hope you watch the recording listening to that very first thing you sang and know that it was perfect... and you could even learn that and play it - and show Dad how good it is.
All the best Ellen ! You can stand up on a chair and be taller than your dad, and then play how you feel being tall! My friend likes to lay on the floor when he plays bass. I also tried laying on my back, because I used to play until I got sleepy and tried to keep playing even as I fell alseep... it was really nice. You can also try to play in different places... like if you get a long cable, you can play outside while sitting on the grass. Or maybe.... somewhere you can look into the sky! Wherever you are changes how you feel... and that changes which notes you FEEL like to improvise with. What about... the bathroom? Your dad said imagine yourself on stage singing loudly (that's just his style!) You might imagine yourself on the moon singing softly all by yourself. Whatever you FEEL like.
    Good luck Hovak!
There's still time for you to find your creative freedom - it will happen sooner if you listen to your daughter once in a while and resist the urge to tell her what to do. Get those hand taps defining the pulse RLRLRLRL... your own hands! and see and feel how right hand (down beats) feel more stable and left hand (off beats) feel unstable... you can start some basic call and response rhythm games with your daughter. Show her how to lead... then .. (I know it's hard, being a big man and father but...) LET HER LEAD.
