I've dusted off my bass after 26 years of not playing, my granddaughter started piano lessons, and my 84-year-old partner is learning piano online from his home office. Why, you ask? Because this father and daughter inspired us to. Thank you for positively changing our lives for the better. I hope this comment reaches you so you know how much you both are appreciated. Peace, Steve from Cape Cod, MA

    Two of my favorite parts:
“Don’t forget the spaces!” - YES to this teaching!
“Ok, ALL the notes!” - Proceeds to unleash Ellen to leave the 3-note exercise and just go for it on the whole bass.
As others have already commented, it’s a blast to watch her journey unfold before our eyes.
Anyone who has (or might) complain that Ellen simply had all this handed to her can see that she’s putting in the hard work for herself. And this is WITHOUT video footage of her playing every day off camera as you’ve said she does.
Put in the work, reap the rewards. She’s a rare gem and special to watch.

Ellen pressures Dad for her bass back like most kids beg for the game controller.
These lessons are pure joy to watch as Ellen struggles to control her fingers from just wandering off into a musical exposition all on their own.

I've never commented on anything UA-cam before. Nevertheless, I feel compelled to share what I felt was one of the most special things I've ever seen in my 70 years on this planet. Hovak, the relationship you have with Ellen is one of the most beautiful Father/Daughter relationships I have ever been privileged to witness (and I'm a father of two girls and one boy and two grandchildren). The time and the care you spend with her and your willingness to share your musical gifts are something all we fathers should stive to emulate. Your patience and love when working with her are really inspirational. (Your lessons with her are among my favorite videos). And, even though we don't see much of Mom, her influence in all of Ellen's great outfits and hair stylings (and Mom's camera work) is ever present. You two are cooperating on raising an exceptional human being.
As for Ellen, you have been blessed with a very special child. Her "light" and here love of life fills the screen. Don't know if the bass is her long term future as life's path is full of many twists and turns. But, whatever she does I'm sure she will be important to a great many people and this world. As for now, if I don't hear an Ellen bass groove at least once a day, my day is just not complete...
Thank you for seeing her gifts and nurturing them. There is no greater responsibility for parents and I've never seen anyone do a better job than you two.

There's a video with her playing one. It was probably recorded after this one. She absolutely nails it.

I had to pick up my bass and try this. I was like "not that note RABBIT!" all the way through when I was limited to 3 notes, LOL. Well done, I definitely learned something here and had fun doing it. :)

Finally I start to understand now what have I do to make my improvisation on bass, although I tried before and I watched many other lessons, but still can't do it well. Thank you for your lessons! And I hope its continue.

Wow, so much more than just learning to ace a cover song, this is actually very amazing. I love the interaction with Ellen and her incredible responses.

I love how Ellen wants her bass back very soon after Hovak takes it to show her something. She catches on so quickly and wants to cement what she learned from him into her muscle memory.

Amazing work by both Ellen and Hovak. We have another Tal Wilkenfeld on our hands. Improvisation is important to any musician. Ellen is an incredible young bassist with a talent that belies her age. This young girl is a rare talent, and Ellen loves every minute of it.

Wonderful! This video is a lesson on how to teach a music lesson. Excellent teacher and extraordinary student. I was teaching my children to play their instruments, but I was a very clumsy teacher. I would have liked to learn to teach with you, to teach them better. Congratulations!.

Very wise teacher to never end the lesson experience on a bad note (figuratively) dad made sure the lesson ended with fun instead of disappointment or frustration, you are a good man sir.
