Honestly my biggest problem with this movie is her ending up with Rolf and not Smith. Historical accuracy can jump off a cliff in my opinion cause otherwise we'll have to expect this Pocahontas to die young too.

Fun fact "If i never knew you," was originally sung by the characters in the movie, but its was cut in the original release, but put back in with the new release. I love the song, the lyrics are powerful, If you watch the new scene, it's very Disney, In the case of they want to say something but can't find the words so sing it. They sing about how different their life would be, how empty they would feel, but never know why they had an emptiness. Its a powerful song, and helps the audience, realize how they have effected each other even if the outcome is not a happy one.

I am aware. The pop ballad version of "If I Never Knew You" that plays during the credits is one of my favorite Disney songs.
Imagine if that were the last song in the movie, sung as John was sailing away. It would tear the audience's heart out even more.

@@TheDetectiveSteve ironically that was originally what was supposed to happen. Look up Pocahontas deleted ending. I’m in the minority who like Rolfe and wish Disney could canonise both of them so that consumers have a choice(I ended up getting a fan made Rolfe doll online). However my love of the sequel doesn’t stop me from pointing out parts where the original could have been more compelling.

    Sorry long post incoming.
    1. I have mixed feelings on this movie. Like you said, there were many great topics to do for a sequel. Keep the armada plot and Pocahontas going to England. She did in history. Also keep the aspect of losing her identity or being ashamed by it and later embracing it. So many Caucasians going to Virginia might cause her to wonder if she'll be able to keep her roots or assimilate. That scene of her removing her LATE MOTHER'S necklace should've had more impact. That ticked me off so much of the lost potential.
    2. Pocahontas was the first Disney princess to break up with someone. Sure it was because of historical accuracy but still it could've been interesting. I feel more time could've been made to have Pocahontas choose between them or have John Smith wonder what he did to lose her love and try to fix it but to realize in the end, they can't work anymore. The exchange in the movie was weak. John Rofle, I actually liked. Billy Zane gave a good performance and the moment he caught Pocahontas in her underwear was funny.
    3. I wish the other characters got a mention at least. Thomas and Wiggins get no mention. I have a fan theory that Wiggins quit because of how everything went down but again just a theory. Thomas is a sweetheart and as long as he isn't dead, I'm good. Maybe he and the others did get thrown in prison trying to tell their side or went into hiding realizing Ratcliffe convinced the king and was after them. SOMETHING!
Utamaken (sp?) was a fun character and his smile realizing that those women found him attractive made me laugh out loud.
I knew the twist but I was awaiting the fallout. Imagine your previous love who you thought was dead, reappearing and seeing you with someone new. I was anticipating the awkwardness and/or a fight for her BUT sort of nope. They discuss it briefly but that's it.
My gripe is lost potential. Pocahontas isn't a popular princess in Disney and defined Katzenberg's hubris so this was a chance to do something about it. I love Irene as Pocahontas, I love most of the characters (Flik, Meeko, and Percy I can take it or leave it), but Disney botched it. If they do a live action they better acknowledge the criticisms.
Thanks for your video and good luck in quarantine.

Utamatomakin is the Mori-sempai of this movie; he doesn't speak a lot, is tall and strong, kind and loyal. This character is also funny despite not speaking much. I like him :D
This movie followed the history when Poca marry Rolfe but in the plot, this makes no sense. She barely knows him and STILL LOVES John smith. Why would she wanted to marry a guy she doesn't know? This was so weird!

The only reason why I love the second movie is mostly because Billy Zane as the voice of John Rolfe because I grew up watching his Movie's like TITANIC

  • @superfanmusicmaker
    @superfanmusicmaker 4 роки тому +7

4:39 - I think you might have missed it, but Rolfe actually made this mistake because he just overheard two of the villagers. They were talking about Pocahontas not letting the natives go to war, but they didn't use specific pronouns so he assumed it must be the chief.
14:36 - I definitely saw it coming. He's too important a character to kill off straight away, the hooded figure looks way too much like him and gets introduced way too late in the film to be anyone else important. If I could see it coming when I was three, then it must have been really easy for an adult to figure out.
But even as a kid, I could tell that they had to really dumb down John Smith, both as a concept and as an actual character. He was badass and daring in the original film, but also learned to be open and understanding, and Pocahontas opened his eyes to realise that those who were different weren't savages.
Here he's just a one note zorro caricature like the Flynnigan Rider books Eugene read in Tangled, and at times he actually seems like more of an asshole than he was before his character development in the first. It says a lot about Pocahontas and Rolfe's relationship when it relies on haphazardly changing John Smith's character rather than allowing them to come together naturally based on their own characters.
Though I'll give the movie this much credit, Ratcliffe was actually a somewhat effective villain this time around. His "check" line alone is more intimidating than anything he did in the original film, and while the actual fight was underwhelming I think his final arrest is pretty damn satisfying.

I actually enjoyed this more than the original. Not exactly a good movie, but I was more entertained.
Positives: Ratcliffe was more threatening here and Pocahontas had more to her character. And despite the rushed outcome of their romance, I felt more chemistry here than in the original.
Negatives: cheap animation, poor handling of John Smith’s return, the beginning scene being out of continuity with previous movie’s end, and the stupid final battle.
Good job reviewing this much hated sequel :)

This film was so bad that Disney pretends it's not real as they don't list John Rolfe on the Disney Princess site. I felt if they were going to be historical inaccurate, keep Smith as her lover. They made John Smith into Martin Riggs (Ironic given that Mel Gibson played that icon), and it does not work here at all, but that is not on Donal at all, he was asked to copy his brother and he was trying his best. With all due respect for Billy Zane, I think he was in a no win situation with this role, he had to play someone that would end up marrying Pocahontas, and he pissed a lot of people off. I think because of the tenth anniversary version of the film came out, everyone went from liking John Rolfe to hating him because they found love for Smith that time around. "If I Never Knew You" is what made people love Smith again.

I still love the fact that Mel Gibson's lesser known brother voiced John Smith in this movie...Mel Gibson from what I heard recommended to Disney that they should hire Donal to do the voice of John Smith...Mel either was looking out for Donal here or didn't care in the least...I think he didn't care in the least ;-)

Even as a huge romantic as a kid, I didn't even buy the romance between Poca and Rolfe, it felt forced and it wasn't written well. Especially when you think about how the previous film has one of Disney's best animated couples. As for the John Smith plot twist, I actually figured it out when I saw the cloaked figure's shirt, which only Smith wears.
