    Correction 2:
    A lot of comments are saying the poem should be 双兔傍地走.
    I have seen both used. But the version I shown at 0:22 says 兩兔, and it's from the year 1094 (Song Dynasty), so... Yeah I'm sticking to that.
    Correction 1:
    Thanks to commenter Luke Huang pointed out, I typed the wrong line of the poem at 17:47.
    It should be 雄兔腳撲朔,雌兔眼迷離,兩兔傍地走,安能辨我是雄雌
    Instead I repeated 兩兔傍地走 twice like a dumb dumb.

    Wow, 18 minutes huh? Guess I really do hate this movie.

      The stylistic choice was probably made by a bunch of men in suits at a table, the animators had to do their best to flesh out the vision that these people had, which is some kind of aesthetic bastardization and hodgepodge of phoenixes from multiple cultures
      I felt bad hearing that remark, it seemed really misguided, but I understand the anger

      Yeah, I noticed that when he pointed that out. It was the first time I heard someone point that fact out. She starts out not a good soldier, but so do the boys. They're all just as clumsy and amateuristic (that's not a word. It can't be). That just further shows how much the cartoon understood the core messages of the ballad, unlike the live action remake.

      It really stresses the important point that genders are often better at certain things because they simply are trained / expected to learn different skills more.

      Same also with the live action Jungle Book. In the Disney animated Jungle Book, they show how Mowgli was able to grow strong by being supported by a lot of friends and having a lot of "good" (debatable) role models. They shape him. In the live action, he's just a Mary Sue who proves Man is the ultimate animal by constantly besting other animals much older and more experienced than him by Dexter's Labbing up some twigs and grass into stuff even modern technology can't make with those materials given a lot more time and people.

    One thing I noticed in the animated movie: when Shang tells everyone to climb the tower at the beginning of "Make a Man Out of You", he gives everyone two weights that represent discipline and strength. At first, everyone treats the weights like something holding them down and they try to use brute strength to climb the tower despite those weights. Mulan succeeds because she can use the weights as something to pull her up rather than something weighing her down. Symbolically, this is her using the virtues she's taught in a new way that helps her succeed rather than inhibit her.
    In the live-action version....... we get pails of water she has to carry up a mountain.... and she...... carries pails of water up a mountain. Sure she probably got physically stronger, but only after doing what she's told enough times that it works out for her. It's a lot less nuanced, and I'm sad we didn't get to see that again. It's even less empowering because we're led to believe she's able to do this because she's the chosen one, not because she took her life into her own hands.

    • @thichinhphan4010
      @thichinhphan4010 4 роки тому +85

      Thanks to your input, I realized the metaphor (?) with those two weights *-discipline-*- & -*-strength-* and how they serve the animated version's narrative. The different treatments of them between the male soldiers and Mulan at the end carry more nuances, it's almost like taken from a real asian moral tale :
      + Treat the weights like unwanted baggage and use brute force : none reaches the top of the pole
      + Use them correctly, then even a physically weak person can slowly but surely reach the goal

    • @bluesmurff6163
      @bluesmurff6163 4 роки тому +55

      Agreed, and the first version is so symbolic, and deap, and true. Discipline and strenght are what pulls you up, and and everyone has them. What matters is how you use it

      I actually beg to differ there. It's not as deep but she reached the top because she decided to stop letting her insecurities and the message she was taught while young that "women bring honour through marriage", which was partly influenced by the commander's pep talk?
      A lot of people comparing the animation and live action also don't seem to realise some of the more fantasy/comical plot points are difficult to carry over to live acting. I would in fact say that if they brought the musical elements over as is it'll probably spoil the whole thing.

      I haven’t watched the new movie, but in the Chinese movie (I believe, it is from 2000 or around) Mulan becomes a commander, and the whole point is not so much her soldier skills, but her strategic thinking. If I am not mistaken, this is also how it is in the Chinese original - that Mulan is very good at military strategy.

"She wasn’t just a female who proved her strength to be equal to other men, she was a child protecting her family, a soldier protecting her homeland, and a friend protecting her comrades," captures it perfectly. When realizing that, as a girl who's around her age, I felt empowered. I don't think you necessarily need an Asian writer in order to write a good asian story, as well as you don't need an European for european story or an African for story based in Africa. But you definitely need someone well educated on the topic (doesn't matter which race or nationality as long as the person respects the culture) to help the writers, director, costume designer etc. Casting someone just to be inclusive doesn't sound right to me. Also if taken to extreme, I personally don't see a point in making an american movie when noone included in making was American (I'm from Europe and I would find it wierd if they made a movie based on for example french tale with writers, director and everyone included being french, that would make it a french movie with american money, not american movie; but as many actors as possible should be french, because it should look like it takes place in France). I'm not sure if it makes sense the way I wrote it

      If you want to be depressed... The highest grossing animated movie of all time is the Lion King Remake, probably the worst of all the Live action remakes.
      I've basically lost my respect for the cinema going public. If people pay to go see shitty movies, they deserve what they get.
      (note, while Lion King appears to be at least partially live action it is actually 100% CGI, so is in fact an animated movie, it made 1.7 times more money then the original. Disgusting.)

      Ugh you don’t know the number of times I saw people saying the woman ‘wasn’t like a woman’ and was ‘different from other women’ because she was strong and powerful and bla bla bla. That’s literally gender stereotype. There are strong women and there are weaker women. There are strong men and there are weaker men. Stop thinking that all women are weak and strong women ‘are like men’.
      edit: I'm not talking about Mulan I'm just ranting about the writers I see on the internet who don't think that 'normal' women are capable of doing stuff. Also English is not my first language and my meaning of 'strong' doesn't just mean physical strength, I meant like someone who is generally an empowering person (Don't people say like strong, independent women??? Maybe I misunderstood) (I think animated Mulan is strong too! Maybe that just isn't the right word though. I just can't think of a better word due to my lack of vocabulary) but yeah it makes sense too because it's one of the stereotypes. But ik animated Mulan isn' about that I'm talking about other books and movies I've seen on the internet and I think it is relevant to 'seeing women as men to empower women'.

      @@hellohello8061 Here you are defining physical strength as being empowering, but Mulan was never stronger than everyone else. What made her empowering was her cunning mind. Maybe you should stop stereotyping "BIG AND STRONG" as empowering. Here they completely ignored Mulan's original (animated version) personality, she was neither too masculine nor too feminine, she was an intelligent warm-hearted person. This movie made her one of the guy warriors basically (except better than them), completely ruining her uniqueness and turning her into a Mary Sue.

I can't play with my brothers because I'm a girl, I needed to wear dresses because I'm a girl. I'll get a doll and not allowed to ride my brother's bicycle because I'm a girl. I needed to learn and do all the chores around the house because that is what a girl is for. Being able to watch Mulan when I was younger made me so happy and made me realize that I can't just be limited to what a girl "needs" to do or learn. My rebellious phase came afterwards but I'm grateful for it because that's how I came to be who I am today, and I think my dad has learned to accept the way I am through the years (but my mom is still as stubborn as ever lol)

Luckily she did let me play outside with my brother and the other boys living close. But I do remember having friends who's mom were so focused on 'girl things' that it was just tiring, even for me. Or friends who needed to help with cleaning and other chores while their brother(s) could be lazy all the time. And then you have parents who panick when their little boy wants to be a princess for Halloween/Carnaval, like let them be. I even knew a little kid who did not get a Elsa+Anna cake for his birthday, they put damn Olaf on it and he was sad.
      As somebody who loved boys stuff when I was young I turned out to be very girly. And why would it matter if I turned out to be a "manly lesbian"? (I hate that word so much). Nobody should care. As long as we're happy and healthy!

Parents should treat all children equally, not based on gender. "I'm just a dude-I can't imagine how powerful it must have felt for a young girl" Man, thank you for saying this. Thank you for your wonderful awareness of that. Mulan was so, so important to me (and even my mother, an adult at the time) as a little girl. She was my *favorite.* She still is my favorite. After princess after princess, having a character like Mulan as someone for young girls to look up to was so amazing. I still look up to her to this day. I still get tears in my eyes when I think about her climbing the pole to get the arrow, sweat dripping down her brow after she was *dismissed from service* just to prove to herself that she could do *something*, even if it was just this one thing. Or crying because she fails to fit in to traditional femininity and feels worthless because of it (HOW COULD THEY LEAVE THIS OUT???). Those moments have resonated with me my whole life as a gender nonconforming woman. This was the first time I was shown a woman having true, raw power due to something other than her beauty and sway over men.
    What you say about how Mulan is empowering in the cartoon is so dead on. The message of the film, at it's core, is a condemnation of gender extremes and strict gender roles. It posits that both extreme femininity and extreme masculinity are not only wrong and damaging to people (people like Mulan, who aren't either of those) but are actually ineffective and destructive in many situations. That is such an incredibly powerful and nuanced message and my god, way way ahead of it's time in the 90s.
    A lot of "female empowerment" is telling women to use their sexuality and beauty to manipulate situations, and that totally ignores and leaves behind the thousands of women who aren't beautiful, or don't want to be, or are uncomfortable being very feminine. Mulan is telling women to find their own power wherever they may fall on that binary spectrum, and that's amazing and rare even today. Mulan tells us we can be capable at whatever we feel most comfortable doing through grit, determination and hard work. Mulan carves out her place in the world, cleaves through the gender binary using nothing but her tenacity and natural inclinations to be heroic and noble and nothing else. Her outright rejection of extreme gender roles is what saves China.
    This movie just took a dump on all of it. I had *no* meaning. It had nothing to say. It had none of those deeply impactful emotional beats. It was a fucking joke. The only thing it tells us is that to be a true hero, you have to be born one of two ways; male, or magic. Non-magical women? Tough luck, enjoy dying in childbirth.
    Wow. Amazing analysis here, super insightful, great job.

A group of Chinese high-school students were able to contact them to use their costumes for a high school project, but apparently a multi-millionaire dollar company of Disney can;t hire them for a live-action movie. The color palette of this movie makes me want to throw up, Mulan was born into a low class family, and dyeing clothing during ancient times was very difficult. Another thing I hate about this movie was that Disney never bothered to look into Confucian texts about filial piety, one of the key virtues in the “Ballad of Mulan”.

    "Empowering Femininity"
    that's such a good point, because Disney's feminism, Disney's "strong female characters" basically means women that can outman men. To Disney's writers, "Power", to begin with, means men's power: physical strength, ability to destroy, aggression, "empowerment" therefore becomes synonymous with masculinisation, so naturally, their "Strong Female Characters" are just a bunch of women that are even more manly than men.

    • @Wormwoodification
      @Wormwoodification 4 роки тому +99

      This is not just a Disney symptom, it's been growing to this insane incarnation for a few decades now. Every 'strong female character' is like this. I'd be hard-pressed to find a 'strong female character' on tv that isn't these days. And it's not just in television, it's how modern feminism is. This third/fourth-wave feminism. All I see is women wanting an excuse to act like their imagined stereotype of 'toxic masculinity'. It's exhausting. It's come so far I am embarrassed. I will never be a feminist. I can't uphold this sexist ideal because that is what it is. Sexist. Current feminism just wants to 'empower' women by tearing down men. It's a product of mainstream media, Disney and Hollywood buying into it, feeding it, because it makes them money to kowtow but not actually care.

    • @ghollisjr
      @ghollisjr 4 роки тому +10

      It's by design. If women become genuinely more powerful, then they become harder to manipulate. How can you convince a powerful woman to abandon her childhood dreams of having a home and a family with a man she loves in exchange for leaving her family home to live in an overcrowded city being some kind of waitress (food waitress, money waitress, paper waitress, etc.) during the best years she has for finding a man and starting her family? And if you fail to stop her from having kids, how can you convince a powerful woman that she should not raise her children and should instead send them away for government employees to raise them and teach them whatever the state wants to teach them?
      The issue is control. A few people want to own and control everyone else. First step: Break the family. Method: Deceive young men and women; convince them that the way their parents lived is stupid and a type of slavery.

    • @dianayu6162
      @dianayu6162 4 роки тому +66

      @@Wormwoodification I still identify myself as a feminist, but I really don't like the trope that the 'toxic masculinity' is viewed as something awesome if it belongs to a female character. It's fine if a story has masculine female characters, because some women are indeed more traditionally masculine than feminine, but excessive aggression and emotional repression are not something to be praised. The term 'toxic masculinity' is kinda misleading as well, it makes people feel like only men are like that, but women can very well have all those traits as well.

    • @LifeUntilLove
      @LifeUntilLove 4 роки тому +37

      This idea is incredibly outdated form of feminism, as it is a second wave idea of trying to achieve equality. Show women are equal to men by showing they are capable entirely on traditional men's terms (aggression, strength, dominance, etc.) Third wave and onward is about breaking down that idea that women are valuable only if they can meet masculine ideals. Hollywood seems to have gotten stuck back in the 80s and hasn't move forward since.

    Your nailed every reason this movie was absolutely an embarrassment beside the original Disney film. The biggest two things for me were 1) Mulan is now "the chosen one" sort of story. I HATE THAT. It's so boring and uninteresting. Completely dumbs down her character and takes everything she did using her wit and brain and just throws it in the trash. That was a huge mistake, and I think the biggest one. 2) MULAN AND HER FATHER. All of the wonderful emotional beats from the animated film aren't here. It's like you said towards the end, how her father tries to cheer her up after she fails in the beginning. How you can see how much she cares for her father when she thinks he's going to have to go to war and will die. How her father reacts when he realizes she's left (makes me emotional just thinking about it). And the beautiful reunion scene with possibly the best line from the whole film: "The greatest gift and honor is having you for a daughter." The line just brings everything full circle and sums up how her father has always felt about her and seen her, but now, Mulan can see it herself too. I just love that.
    So yeah, the live action had huge shoes to fill. And it couldn't do that, which isn't a surprise, but man I didn't think it was going to be THIS bad. I don't think it could have been much worse to be honest.

Feminism and empowering women was never supposed to be about eradicating every healthy authority in our lives, female or male. It's so sad that it's turned into that, and media is just perpetuating that notion. It really takes away from what equality should be, and makes it something cheaper. I wish they'd stop trying to make every female character either 1) special and the chosen one (a mary sue) OR 2) strong in a masculine sense- because there is beautiful strength in femininity that we're just not getting to see in Hollywood (9 times out of 10) and that's really unfortunate.

It’s something different that, although she may not be a Chinese descendant, she can relate to because she is also facing as much patriarchal or societal pressures.
      And as a black girl, if she was in a white-racist neighborhood, went to a white majority school, or to be honest, EVEN if she wasn’t living in America, she would have faced so much hardship-
      *In fact-blacks in America aren’t the only ones facing racial injustice. It’s on an international scale, but a lot more subtle than USA’s.*

      If...... If I was the one who commented that, but started off with-“I’m a Pacific Islander, but I always looked up to Mulan because I was bullied” you wouldn’t have criticized at all WHY I was introducing myself as a Pacific Islander.
      I think that says more about _you_ than you think.
      Rather than going-Oh you must be an ‘American’, you guys are always on about your race-Maybe you should ask yourself, am I saying something problematic? Am I, by the harsh dictation in my comment, only perpetuating a system that’s trying to shame black voices into silence?
      I’m not black, and I know this much. You might not be a bad person, so I don’t want to bash on you without considering that maybe this isn’t something you know.

      Action is not without reaction. So when you keep kicking down someone who can beat you up because you think they're too guilty to respond; based off, they've been kind enough to let you off the first time, you must be very careful if you're going to keep going about it. They can stand up enraged and you can bet they'll never listen to reason again.
      This is what empowerment must understand. The powerful and the rich can also be Oppressed at heart, and just like a tamed lion can realize their destiny as per what people think of them is a wild lion, can casually proceed to kill the lion tamer, ending the circus.

You have a valid point, but don’t go as far as to become like NoBullshit where every woman that isn’t sexualized and hyperfeminine is automatically feminist propaganda. Your criticism should rather be that they aren’t depicted as real people, rather as stripped down ideas of people without the character. Not that they aren’t feminine enough for your liking. OP put it better.

      Cú Chulainn it was an example on what line you should not cross. You called femininity the "default state" of women, which is untrue. Femininity and masculinity are social and cultural concepts, varying from place and context, there is no "default state" and there is nothing wrong with 'masculine' women. A masculine woman can be great if she is written as a good character.

      There are some psychological studies that indicate that femininity and masculinity could be much more than social and/or cultural constructs. These studies are largely empirical, and thus far from guaranteed truths, but they do make sense; culture and society don't come out of nowhere, they are the result of the base human psyche that responds to the environment it inhabits. The fact that males and females tend to fill similar roles in most cultures across space and time would indicate that masculinity and femininity are, in fact, hard coded into the human brain.
      Personally, I stand by Carl Jung's thesis that man and woman possess both a masculine and feminine drive, and that they are simply more prevalent in the respective gender. Therefore, one should be free to embrace or reject both however they see fit. But stating that masculinity and femininity don't exist and are just a product of society is a dangerous idea that creates more confusion than anything

    • @fen4613
      @fen4613 4 роки тому +31

      Chazaqiel Is this misunderstanding-ception? I didn‘t say they don’t exist. I said there is no "default state", because humans no longer have an inherent nature, we‘re cultural beings. Rolls being similar in most cultures could also be mainly explained through biology when we first developed cultures (which started before the stone age even), males tend to be bigger and build up muscle faster, while also having higher testosterone levels. You can’t really choose your preferred role in society if you couldn’t stand in a fight and are indoctrinated by 'tradition' centuries after. Being oppressed isn’t being feminine. If you leave a child without other people, it will either die or become feral, unable to mentally develop, because we’re so dependent on culture. If it wasn’t strictly cultural, a feral female child would suddenly act feminine and start caring about making makeup from dirt? Femininity isn’t natural, it’s observed, learned and then maybe adapted. Obviously that decision of adaptation isn’t as black and white nor conscious, but it’s definitely not because it’s a default. I really don’t know if we’re arguing the same side or not, I‘m kinda confused by now.

    When I was a little girl, I loved the animated Mulan because she was like me. I was not special, in fact, I was a mess. I was a nervous child who had very few friends because I was always daydreaming instead of trying to fit in. Mulan also struggled to fit in, and I knew what that was like. Watching Mulan grow stronger through her different way of thinking was inspiring, because if she could do it, so could I.
    This remake ruined that. I’m no longer Mulan, I am the sister. No, I’m worse than the sister because I fail to fit in. Not like this new Mulan, who fails to meet expectations because she’s too good. She’s too talented, too strong. The sister achieves what society expects of her. I must really be more of a mess than I thought if I can’t relate to any of the characters.
    They took out all the inspiration for a girl like me by taking away all Mulans flaws. She’s an outcast because she is too amazing. The most relatable female character in the remake is the hen Mulan chases as a child, and that’s not very empowering.

    I was a history and art history major. Feeling deeply offended by this movie, which is full of historical errors.
    It's OK to change the original plot or even "alter" the history "a little bit" for the sake of better storytelling. BUT, it's an entirely different story if you claim that the movie is "based on" an actual historical story but didn't respect the historical details at all. Let me give you a few examples:
    The round dwelling building that Mulan’s family lives in is located in southeastern China, whereas historically Mulan was from central China. Such buildings didn’t exist until 700 years ago, whereas Mulan’s story took place in 450AD. The story and the building are about one thousand years apart.
    The costumes and props are historically misplaced as well - those hair accessories only existed in late Tang dynasty, not Northern Wei dynasty in which Mulan was from - again, many hundred years in between the two.
    Half of the poetry that appeared in the antithetical couplet on the matchmaker’s doorframe was from a play that was written in Yuan Dynasty, which is nearly 900 years after Mulan's story. The other half was probably written by a present-day Chinese - these two halves don’t even match by classical Chinese literature rules of tone patterns and symbolism.
    Also, in Northern Wei, people sat on the ground instead of on chairs, which was the custom back then. The textile dyeing techniques were very underdeveloped, meaning that those various bright colors in the movie didn’t in fact exist at all.
    Mulan practiced Tai Chi by the lake, which was created in the 13th century - again, Mulan's period is between 4th - 6th century.
    So many more errors, which I'm not going to list individually.
    You CANNOT just squeeze all the Chinese cultural elements that are well known in the West into a film and claimed that it's made for either the West or the East (if not both). Disney is filthy rich and located next to UCLA, UC-Berkeley and Stanford, which are all top school in East Asian studies. I just don't believe that Disney doesn't have the money to employ a professor as a "real" cultural expert to correct their mistakes.
    All the historical inaccuracy, plus the weird script (no character arc, artificial dialogues, wrong interpretation and presentation of feminism, etc.), just enabled me to believe that this is an arrogant, shallow movie. A magnificent failure.

      it would be absolutely foolish to entertain the thought that disney, as it is at the moment, would actually give a shit about historical accuracy over pandering the hardline feminists and trying to score brownie points with the extreme sjws. The original movie was already more of a proper female empowerment artwork than this, they didn't need to change anything. Yet they did, only because they wanted to prop a woman up on a pedestal and over glorify the fact that she's a woman. Ironically, they did so by dismissing all things feminine and portraying this character as being "manlier than men". For all intents and purposes, this movie's idea of "empowering women" is basically just to slap a pair of tits on a man.
      The story of mulan is meant to show that the differences between men and women don't really matter all that much, and that both femininity and masculinity have their fair share of worth.

      Another way that the movie angers me is how it mixes up East Asian culture. In one scene of the movie, the witch is shown to be using a shuriken.
      A shuriken (Japanese: 手裏剣; literally: "hidden hand blade") is a Japanese concealed weapon that was used as a hidden dagger or metsubushi to distract or misdirect. It's basically those throwing stars you incorrectly see being used by ninjas on Western TV

    7:07 I think my favorite part about how this is executed is in the spirit that Mulan fulfills Chinese tradition in the face of ritual. She saves her nation and her family (A theme that is absolutely #1 in Confucian teachings but is widely present throughout most Chinese teachings) without having to choose one or the other through a way that both should condemn, if you were to "follow the rules" of Chinese society. It's the exact same kind of themes extolled throughout Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist philosophies; they might all disagree on a lot of things, but all of them have nothing but praise for the person who understands the spirit of the rules over the letter.
    There's a pretty popular Chan (Zen is the Japanese word for it) Buddhist poem about two monks coming across a woman who needs to cross a river, but didn't feel safe crossing alone. The older monk, without hesitation, carries her across the river despite the sacred vow of a Buddhist monk being forbidden to touch women.
    This shocks the younger monk, who desperately tries to hold his tongue, but a few hours afterward, cannot help but ask, "Didn't we take vows not to touch women? Why did you carry that woman?"
    The older monk looks flatly at his junior and replies "I set her down at the bank hours ago. Why are you still carrying her?"
    There's a lot of ways to interpret this fable, but the way I first saw it was in the disconnect of knowing and understanding. The younger monk is caught up in the rules, but the older monk understands _why_ the rules are in place, and understands that in order to fulfill his responsibilities as a good Buddhist, he must prioritize the mindset of the Buddha over the ritual of the religion. He saw someone in need, and helped them, as Zen Buddhism asks of its adherents.
    And in a funny way, that's not a Chinese-only philosophy. See Matthew 12:1-13 in the Bible for a very similar message that developed independently in a very different part of the world.

They brought in concepts like Chi, use architectures that doesn't reflect the real place mulan is from (the building she lives in was only seen in Southern China and is related to a specific group of people 客家人, while the character Mulan is from a poem in northern ancient China). All these things just feels really weird together with the realistically-looking armors and clothes.

      The movie is apparently being utterly savaged in the country it was attempting to pander to. Turns out, they too can see that it's just Western writers accessorizing with a foreign culture.

    It hurts because I was a child when Mulan came out. I felt so empowered as a little girl. As a woman now I watch the new version and weep. I don't want a superhero, I wanted a girl like me being strong in the real way.
