I'm visiting the Netherlands, specifically Amsterdam and Belgium (Zeebrugge) this fall, if all goes well. I can't wait to see where all of my Eckerson, Boegart, Van Lanen, Van Gaasbeck, etc. originated. German and Dutch food is my comfort food, so I look forward to tasting the real thing1
Highly underrated and oftentimes forgotten are traditional Dutch dishes with stoved meat (e.g. hachee/zuurvlees/stoverij).

@@mattbecker743 They are, but she means the way you eat it. For instance the dutch pancakes, traditionally you roll them up and then cut it wit your knive in little pieces and eat it with your fork. But it also depends on the topping you chose, when heavy you can't roll it up, then you have to cut it in pieces and enjoy. I miss boerenkool stampot ( cale stew) here with rookworst ( smoked sausage) and spekjes ( fried bacon) and picalilly ( pickles) .

We actually do not generally eat our pancakes with all these toppings, only in restaurants. When we eat them at home it's just either stroop, powdered sugar, cheese or apple sauce.
Not by definition. We have often used slices of ham and apple in our homemade pancakes. It's not much effort.

I live in the New York City area and during the 1600s it was once called New Amsterdam after the famed Dutch city since many of the original settlers were of that background
It was called that way because the VOC bought Manhattan from the native Americans and so created New Netherlands with New Amsterdam as their first city. Some of New York’s boroughs still carry the name that came from the Netherlands. Harlem (Haarlem), Brooklyn (Breukelen), Flushing (Vlissingen), Coney Island (Conynen Eilandt) and Staten Island to name a few. Even the Dollar comes from the Dutch Daalder, which was the Dutch coin used during that era.

I'm a direct descendant of Wessel Wesselse Ten Broeck, from Westphalia Germany, who settled in what's now Kingston, NY. My mother is a descendant of the Eckerson family from Holland. I dunno, a local pancake restaurant I went to (in Nieuwegein) always served them with knife and fork? People there didn't really roll them up
Plain simple pancakes, sure, but the more involved ones with other ingredients I've really never seen people roll

Depends on what is on top of your pancake, if there's alot than you can't roll it and you cut pieces with your knife. If you have an lightly topped pancake, for instance plain with syrup and sugar, yes than you can roll it. It's wlhow you like to eat it. 🤗🇳🇱

Netherlands delicacies are generally sweet - Poffetijes, pancakes, tarts, oijlebollen. Rest are mostly oil fried - Fritjes, Bitterballen, krokets, Frikandel etc. Generally the lunch is sandwiches (Bread, cheese & ham). Food is not fancy - so if you are from a country experienced in diverse food styles (like US - especially from South, Spain, Italy, Germany or from Asia), you could feel depressed with the food options (or the lack of it).

i went to grocery stores bought broodje rolls, witschimmel kaas rookvlees , packaged herring and made sandwiches, and knak weiners
I had a Dutch herring thinking it would be pickled like rollmops or a Bismark but it wasn't and had a strange sour taste. I was not a fan at first but i grew to love them. Still not as good as a UK rollmop.

Vlaamse Frieten are actually quite a bit thicker than US french fries. It is less crispy but as a tradoff has more flavor!

Was in Amsterdam last December and one thing that many fail to mention is that the food is EXPENSIVE people. Letting you all know so you don't get surprised when you arrive. Anyway, Amsterdam is lit af so it's totally worth it
These are the tourist prices, I'm not going to eat in the citycentre, it's twice as expensive. As local I don't eat in the tourist area's. 🤗🇳🇱
Belgian Fries are cooked with a double deep fry. The first is at a lower temperature to cook the fries all the way through and the second deep fryer is at a higher temperature to crisp the outside of the fries a bit more than the middle.

You probably missed out a type of Dutch food I have to tell about, because I'm a member of this particular Dutch population group. That is Indisch eten (Indo food = indo-european food) which is not exactly Indonesian food but close. It is not the food you can eat in chinees-indische restaurants, that is the extremely dutch version.
Some special dishes:
Rendang, Soto Ajam, Sajoer Lodeh, Saté Babi, Gado Gado.

The best place for pancakes is nowhere near the center, we love Boerderij Meerzicht in Amsterdam Bos. It's where the locals go, we look forward to it every year.

No.1 Saucijzenbroodje : puffpastry with meat filling
No.2 HEMAworst: Gelderse rookworst only from the HEMA shops! (HEMA have also nice saucijzebroodjes)
No.3 Broodje bal: Meatball with slices of bread (I like the whitebread best) with gravy

I realised that there are some more amazing fish products, other than the zoute haring:
- Gestoomde makreel: smoked mackerel (warm cured)
- Bokking : smoked herring, different kinds: spekbokking (cold cured) and stoombokking (warm cured)
- Gerookte paling : smoked eel
- Lekkerbekje : deep fried fish filet in a crust originally from cod or whiting, ask the fish monger.
- Kibbeling : deep fried chunks of fish in a crust, originally cod, now mistery see lekkerbekje.
We showed paling in our Eating Amsterdam tour video... We love paling.......
Too bad that the eel in dutch waters is declining and somewhat endangered. However there are special measures to improve this.

Of course.. This video mainly concentrated on more snack and street food. The Dutch cuisine isn't known for popular full meals as in other cultures. But that's changing rapidly especially in the bigger cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Plenty of choices for meat like Cannibale Royale, Argentine style steak houses and the gourmet burgers craze which is still going strong. Vegetarian restaurants are popping up fast as well. I don't get the thing about stroopwafels. I'm Dutch and can't remember having them.
She's wrong on the fries. The Dutch eat all types of fries (Belgian or French) with the same sauces. Preferably mayonaise or peanut sauce. A combination of those sauces is called 'oorlog' ('war'). And patat(je) just means fries, not potato

@@Jennithebrayne I'm not actually Dutch that's just my ethnicity, I'm from Canada, but my parents and grandparents are and I've been there for a month to visit family, so I asked my mom what she thought and she told me that Keukenhof Gardens is the best place to see tulips (April/May is the best time to see them) and that Vondelpark is a great park to visit (I think so too) I'm sorry if that's not helpful 🙏 I hope you can have a good stay if you go!

The quality of food in Foodhallen (both in Rotterdam and Amsterdam) is pretty good only ridiculously overpriced. If you are on a time constraint I guess it is worth it. Otherwise I suggest to go elsewhere. Also The American soldiers thought they were in France when they ate fries, they were actually in Belgian part where French is spoken. So you American folks technically are eating imitation Belgian fries.
it is a bit pricey, especially for self serve and not an official sit down restaurant. But it's comparable to similar places all over the world.
Not quite sure why people were iffy on the raw herring....I mean sushi and sashimi are raw.
I hear you.... but many, people like myself don't like sushi all that much, mainly becuase of the slimy textures.
Herring has an untrue reputation of being very fishy tasting, which it isn't. You can watch the full video on people trying herring and you'll see that most people after trying herring, really like it...
