  • US removed its veto against a ceasefire in Gaza for the first time since the offensive began following the October 7th attack. Journalist Jotam Confino and former Israeli ambassador to the US Itamar Rabinovich explain how this shift in position from Joe Biden could play out for Benjamin Netanyahu and the region.

I wonder if it occurs to anyone that if virtually the whole world including erstwhile friends are now turning their backs on Israel and most of their populations are doing the same it might be time for Israelis to start looking at themselves and asking some serious questions

There's massive support for the war across the entirety of the political spectrum in Israel. So you don't even know basic facts.
And you don't even know what the bandwagon fallacy is, so you're obviously not in a position to be commenting on a middle eastern war

In the debate between Netanyahu and Biden, regarding the reference to the non-imposition of an American veto on the UN resolution, which called for a ceasefire and the return of the abductees, I am inclined to support Netanyahu. This is despite the fact that, from a personal point of view, I see him as a prime minister who no longer deserves to serve, because of his enormous failings.
It is impossible to underestimate the severity of this UN decision, which actually encourages Hamas not to compromise on the release of the Israeli abductees. On the one hand, the entire world supports the release of the abductees, on the other hand, it provides Hamas with a good incentive not to go to a deal and continue to ask for unilateral concessions from Israel. Israel's compromise with the demands of Hamas, means the return of terror to Israel and the recognition that all its fallen, including the soldiers who fought, were in vain!
Even before the war broke out, the world gave Hamas a strong incentive to start it. Because he knew in advance, that the world would be shocked by the harm to the civilian population in Gaza, and therefore Hamas did everything, so that this harm would indeed occur. He built a terrorist infrastructure, from which he attacked Israel, over the years, among the civilian population, knowing that the world would ignore it and refer only to Israel's attacks on Gaza.
It is shocking to see that even Biden, who showed so much empathy for Israel at the beginning of the war, is now lending his hand to encouraging Hamas to avoid releasing hostages, while setting impossible conditions for Israel to have a fair deal, even if only slightly, regarding the hostages.
Hamas cares very little about the severe damage suffered by the residents of Gaza. They will be able to return to control Gaza, in a victory parade, when the people in Gaza will not be able to blame them. With the encouragement of the world, the blame will be placed fully on Israel and Gaza will be ready for the next war…

Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says:
‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave your master’s house
to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been
too little, I would have given you even more. Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is
evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You
killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now, therefore, because you despised Me and took the wife
of Uriah the Hittite to be your own…’

There were specific conditions for continual US support and Netanyahu flouted all of them he knows and we know about the density issue , but the way it could have been conducted could have been much different a prolonged occupation of Gaza will not only be costly to Palestinians it will be costly to Israel and the IDF .

I totally agree with the first commentator. The ceasefire would work very well for Israel. They'd get all the hostages out, in exchange for a 2 week pause until the end of Ramadan. Then they can go after Hamas in Rafah, knowing all hostages are free. Better deal than anything they're working on. If Hamas stops releasing hostages, Israel can stop the ceasefire. I've admired Netanyahu's resolve throughout the war, but here he's making a major mistake.
