  • GreenStalk Leaf and Original Planter UPDATE 5 months latter of what’s growing or going to seed| Not really a review but some issues I have been having
I have been growing in my GreenStalk for approximately 5 months. This video is on what I have been growing from transplants and from seed.
I did intermix my leaf and original planters to grow bigger plants on the bottom and smaller plants on the top.
I have been growing, lettuce, chard, spinach herbs, flowers, and peppers.
Welcome to Growing with the Woodpile
A journey of learning how to garden in 2 zones. Hot Zone 9a in Mesa - Phoenix Arizona and cool weather 6b in Alpine Arizona. I learn how to garden by watching other UA-cam Channels, books, and my county extension office. I am sharing what I have learned, tried, failed, and successfully grown in my 2 gardens.

Thanks for sharing. You should occasionally take the top off and rinse it to keep it clean so those drains don’t clog up. Simple maintenance for a lifetime of use 👍

I lived in Z9B until a month ago and have a Greenstalk. I have 1 original level and 5 New Leaf levels. I drilled an extra hole in each layer before filling and I also hooked up my automatic watering. It worked really well. I do not like growing tomatoes in it because even my "patio tomatoes" which were only supposed to be a foot tall became more like 5' vines that dragged on the ground. Lettuce, spinach, herbs, bunching onions (just a few per slot), strawberries, and leeks did really well.

My husband cut some round wooden discs to place on top of the planter. It keeps debris out it.

have you considered strawberries? They have performed well for me in the greenstalk. Thanks for sharing your experience-good luck with the irrigation.

I have but I would need to move the GreenStalk to area in my yard that gets afternoon shade. I am in 9b and they would bake in the afternoon sun.

Needs a lot of pruning and better nutrients, pick your herbs and dry them constantly

Thanks. I need to do a better job drying herbs. I did just update my soil in a later video.

Been watching alot of greenstalk videos. I do wish you would say what some of the items are for. Like why grow milk thistle? For tea? The flowers? Most herbs I know but some of your items I hadn’t heard of and if they are good for you, from your experience please share.

Great suggestion! The milk weed I grow for the butterflies, chamomile for tea.

What is the advantage of putting the leaf levels on top of the original layers?

I want to plant bigger plants on the bottom so they would not interfere with the other levels.

How do the green supports attach? Are they sturdy?

Hello. I have been considering buying a greenstalk. I am new to gardening and know nothing, but really want to learn how to grow my on food. We live in Chandler in an apt with a s facing covered patio. I fear things will bake in these towers. Would you recommend these towers for our area?

I honestly don’t know. I have to water 2 times a day in the summer. I would get a spinner for the bottom to spin the planter to give some plants a break from the sun. You could also get the frost protection supports but instead put some shade cloth on the support instead.

You can always stick an umbrella over it. I like my greenstalk, but don't plant tomatoes in it (unless they are dwarfs that only get a foot high).

Keep the dirt out of the top.

Why are you not saving those seeds you are just throwing away? You can donate them to people who want to try a garden but have limited money to buy seeds.
