Thanks for asking! It's not a stupid question at all and you're right, it is similar in some ways to obedience classes. Showmanship originally started as a class to teach exhibitors how to safely handle horses for the conformation classes (known as "halter classes") and how to best exhibit the horse to highlight its qualities. Over time the class has evolved into an event which involves the exhibitor executing a series of complicated maneuvers in concert with the horse. The original safety requirements still govern the parameters for evaluation by the judges. Ex: standing or leading directly in front of the horse incurs a penalty.
