Good morning Mustie! I love your videos. Just this morning it occurred to me why you are so compelling to watch. With your positive attitude and mellow style, you are the Bob Ross of engine repair. Keep up the awesome work.
Legit realizing it myself hahaha gotten so many motors from my local dump and cam finally repair them thanks to the Mustie himself haha great content man and awesome comment @brassman5
Just bought a ride on lawn mower that wasn’t running for $100. And fixed it with the help of you videos. I now have a fully running ride on 42” lawnmower for the $100 + $30 in parts, The magneto was bad, no spark, replaced the mag and it fired right up, replaced air and fuel filter as well. Thanks for all the help of your videos,
One day I was looking for a video on how to adjust the carb screws on a weedeater. Next thing you know I've watched 80 something Mustie videos. Thanks for making these, I've definitely learned a lot from you and now I have taken new interest in working on small engines.
Been there, done that! "Hey Must... there's 4 bolts - look, there's one behind the pull start! No no, it'll never come off like that - there's a 4th... ah, you found it!"
I’ve worked on stuff before. But you’ve inspired me to tackle completely rebuilding the two Stihl 028 Super saws I’ve got sitting out in the shed. I’ve learned so much from your videos! Thanks for all the awesome lessons!
I think another commenter hit the nail on the head as to why your channel is so fun to watch when he described you as the Bod Ross of engine repair. Love the way you interact with the audience, your upbeat demeanor and genuine love of what your doing comes through in every video. Great work as always.
An interesting trick to try with old saws is to prime it ,as you did,run up the revs, and place your thumb over the carb ,causing the strong vacuum to draw through the ports in the carburetor. I have used this trick on many occasions with consistent success
i was up till three in the AM watchin this stuff im just as happy as you are when you get sumpin runnin not a whole lot of people left that can think outside the box like you do . Way cool to let us watch over yer shoulder . Thanks
Keep your elbows in fella, feels like i'm in a shopping queue.great clip topper. And to you also, a thank you for your father's and Grandfather's. Who made that ultimate sacrifice 75 years ago here by Normandy D-day. so we can do,what we like doing. i watched friday them old G.I's, Canadian's and our Tommies. And not ashamed to say. They brought me to tears. A huge sacrifice.
That's actually a pretty good saw, and worth it to put a carb kit..and new bar and chain on. A friend that worked as a tree man would freak about the way you put the bar in the vice like that though, as he had a stand that held by the lower part of the handle, and the bottom plate of the saw to work on them. Many of the bars have moving parts in them, and are damaged easily.
Just a sprocket at the tip and the chain groove are at all sensitive, and you can’t really pinch the groove in a vice with the chain on. I use the vice to sharpen blades
These are the favorite videos of mine. You always remind me of my father when he would repair stuff he got off the side of the road. I would sit on a bar stool in his shop and just watch and listen to him work on things. My dad would always say things won't fix themselves. You just bring back all these great memories I have. Great videos!
Nice chips. No wonder it doesn't need a brake. ;) On a serious note, I want to thank you for the education. Hours and hours of watching your videos, and I've fixed two chain saws of my own, a backpack leaf blower, and a string trimmer. Dirty carbs. I really appreciate the knowledge to take them apart, clean them, and put them back together properly.
He's not too far off, I ruined a pair of Levi's with an Echo 400 when it kicked back; hit old barbed wire in a small tree. Great saw, but it did tear out the thigh of those pants :D
I have an old Echo CS330EVL and it also has no chain brake. I use it all the time and is the best running and cutting saw I have. I hit a spent bullet in a tree that I was cutting down once and it didn't kick back once, it just sliced the bullet in half lengthwise.
No waiting until Wednesday this week. I told real life to take an hour off and for once it listened. I even knew where my glasses were and of course I had a half gallon of coffee nearby. Thanks again Mustie1!
I love these videos, they have inspired me so much and i have learned so much off of these videos, i'm 16 and have a small shop in my garage and currently fixing 2 weed eaters, fixing small engines is a very fun thing to do and a nice thing to learn.
I can't ever thanks enough you sir, just about 3 weeks watching your videos, I had fixed all my 3 walking lawnmowers, 1 Muray tractor, 1chainsaw and 2 trimmers. Now I just have 1 more kid bike rider to do. Thanks abunch pro Mustie1. And I love your kindness and joyful laugh!!!
Mustie Sir, you make me wanna be your trainee, i would love to just be in a garage witch you wrench and learn. I have followed you for over a year. keep up the good work. cheers from Sweden
I just wish there was as many people tossing our stuff or selling for cheap around my neck of the woods. It's fun taking something that is abandoned not running and so satisfying when you hear it run for the first time.
Putting the chain on right - nope - been there - done that - lol - you are not alone ...And yes I talk to myself when doing stuff, but I`m 71 so it dont matter now..Have a great day bud.. Ian (real name) Coastal North Essex - UK
I put a brand new chain on one of my saws a couple years back went out and tried cutting up a log...I was cussing, throwing things, and was like WTF this is a brand new chain its duller than the dull chain I just took off LOL...then the next day I picked the saw up out of the case and was like oh well umm the chain is on backwards no wonder it won't cut worth a da**.
Perfect video and timely! I've been struggling with 2 cycle items recently, one was a chainsaw that had the same problem as yours (it was amazing how similar your vid was to my experience) and the other was a mantis tiller with a carb problem! You verified my diagnosis and I used some of your tricks when I was working on them. Thank you, you've been a great help with these and several other projects!
I have owned an Echo 400 EVL for 38 years. Bought it new in 1982. Had it on the work bench today renewing the carburetor. When I bought it, I asked all the small engine and saw repair shops which popular brand didn't show up much in their shops. Everyone said Echo. I have hundreds of hours on mine. Well balanced, great little saw.
Low speed needle is for the throttle transition from idle to high. High is adjusted in the cut. You need to set the idle first before adjusting the low and high. Start with 1 to 1.5 turns from a light seat on both L and H. As always, love the videos.
Can you say binge watch youtube lately hahah. This is probably the 20 or 30 video ive watched of yours in the last 36 hours sine running across it. Absolutely my favorite on UA-cam right now why haven't I seen your videos sooner!! Thank you for all the information you've inspired me to go out there and try to find old junk and make it live once again. I've been buying all the repair manuals for old Briggs & Stratton Tecumseh and other small motors currently have an Echo trimmer and rs 175 Suzuki dirtbike and a Homelite trimmer as well to work on taking your tips and ideas learnt from your videos hopefully I will be able to get them all running. Sorry for the run-on sentences using voice to text. Once again thank you my good man !
What a cool vid. I like working on all my yard equipment. I have 2 old McCullough Pro-Mac 610's that were my grandfather's that he uses to cut firewood and Christmas trees. They were buried in my parent's garage for many years after he died. I took them rebuilt the carbs and replaced the fuel lines and filter and fired right up. I use them for cutting down big trees and logs all the time. It's pretty cool having an 18 and 24in bars. They are heavy but cut like wolverine's claws. I also have and use axes, shovels, and picks that were my grandpa's. Best way to remember him is using his tools that I watched him use as a kid!!!
Even tho old that's a cutting fool. Don't give it away, it's worth some money. Any sawyer worth his salt, knows that saw is built like they should build them today. Great Great saw. I have one!
My friend, at the bottom of the fuel line inside the tank there is in every chainsaw a weighted filter. The filter must be clean. The weight is so when you turn the saw in different directions it will fall into the gas left in the tank. I suspect your filter is dirty. take off, by grabbing and pulling thru the fuel tank opening. I think this is your problem on this saw. By the way this saw is old but like new, it's very clean, so it wasn't used much. Have fun. Love all of your videos, you have taught me a lot. RB Michigan
I have an Echo blower that is the only piece of lawn equipment that I have NEVER had a problem with. It’s at least 7 now and runs perfect. My neighbor has an old Echo with a white body that was in his garage when he bought his house 10 years ago. It was old when he got it and it runs just as good as mine. I can’t speak on their other tools but the blowers are solid.
You're an inspiration. I have an Echo CS500EVL that is doing the same thing. Set it aside after lots of frustration but after watching you successfully wrestle with this CS400 I think I'll give it another go. Thanks!
Awsome vid mustie I found your videos a couple of weeks ago and I had the idea of buying old trimmers that don’t work and fixing them up . So far so good thanks for the inspiration/idea
older echo chainsaws like that have common faults 1. the fuel filters melt over time not letting fuel through OR sucking in the melted filter blocking up the fuel line 2. there fuel lines block at the bends 3.the filters snap off in the tank 4 the fuel lines can crack from age and vibration other than that they are great machines
I just got my 40 yr. old Pioneer P60 chainsaw running. Carb job didn't work. Found the fuel line rotted off in the tank. Replaced that and it runs like new. Keep the vids coming. From Utah.
Thanks Darren, this reminded me about the pile of yard sale saws I have stashed in the back corner of my garage... my wife brings them home to keep me busy (out of the house)
I have a number of saws I have picked up over the years. Now I have the knowledge and tricks to start repairing them. Thanks for your videos. One trick I have learned is to go to the airport and buy 100LL to use in all of my power equipment. No ethanol, therefore no water absorption.
I have had 2 of those old echo saws for years! I ha e been through them front to back over the years. I also have one of the John Deere saws that was made by echo that is twin cylinder. Echo makes great stuff
That is 100% correct. Mustie stated it backwards in the video when he said "I will let the chain loose because it gets tighter when it heats up" This man is absolutely one of the sharpest small engine guys I have ever seen but no one is perfect. Using a chainsaw every day to put food on the table and having installed a bar and chain or two, I can tell you first hand that a tight chain will get loose when it heats up. When installing a new chain, you must stop every 5 minutes and re-tension it. After 15 minutes or so, you can just keep an eye on it, stopping only if it becomes loose. New chains will stretch a LOT in the beginning and old chains just need to be checked every time you fuel and oil up. You also have to lower the rakers every other time you sharpen the chain. If not? your chain will be sharp but cut nothing because the rakers (Followers, Depth gauges, riders, etc.) are to high and stop the teeth or cutters from hitting the wood and actually cutting anything.
Fixed a carburetor problem in one of my Uncle's Welding machines. It wasn't starting and there was oil and gasoline all over the bottom near the carburetor and air filter. It over flowed into the oil bath filter and caused a mess. I said with confidence, that is a problem with his float pin. Took it apart and did the blow trick and that worked fine. I then shook the float and one was completely filled. I couldn't shake out the gasoline through a small crack so I tried burning it. LOL it shot out 3-4 inches of flames then then disconnected both floats and split one in half. Luckly I had a lighter/ torch which was the perfect heat. A hand held torch would have been too hot. After using the lighter to clean away all the old solder and sanding it all down. I managed to reseal the good fload and fix the crack, seal the two pieces together and attach both floats to it's lever. I was successful.
I caught myself going straight to the spark plug to see if it had fire on a generator that is having issues...it did. So then I was pouring fuel down the carb...that didn't work...so I put some in the cylinder through the spark plug hole...fired right up. Time to take off & go through the carburetor to check for bad gas, clogged needle valve, or any other of the Mustie check list that I know by heart now :) PS> I keep a little lighter that runs like a tiny blowtorch around for just such situations!
Excellent. After watching this I'm confident to have a go at fixing my chainsaws. I have four that stacked up after failing to start one after the other.
Mustie, you’re a national treasure. I’m a 30-something dude working in tech, living in a major city surrounded by concrete. It’s almost tribal watching you work. Haha
Definitely a good choice on which one to fix, I love my Echo chainsaws and many years ago bought a brand new Poulan that i never could make run right- my second hand Echos purrr...
He ALWAYS makes them run. How about that Vee Dub Bus?!! It is like the engines see him coming and they say, "Alright everyone! Straighten up and work right! You! Lifters! Stop slacking!! Rings! I wan't high compression! I don't care how many decades it has been! Coil! Coil? Sir, the coil pooped himself. He doesn't look good. That is OK. There will be a replacements."
My free yardsale craftsman saw just needed the spark arrestor screen cleaned in the muffler. Still runs like a champ 10 years later. I've replaced the bar and chain several times, but that was because of nails in the trees... GREAT VID!
@Mark Stevens The offending tree use to double as a fence post.... for decades. It was full of U nails, rusty barbed wire and the like. The tree absorbed them, so nothing was visible.
Long time subscriber learned alot from you, taking on bigger challenges mechanically. I have a 1980 Echo 500 cs that I bought new, needs new crank seals which I planned on putting in today, new bearings, and a carb kit. I cut down alot of trees with the saw, learned how with that saw, worth the trouble to me. I've got an old Jhonserd I'm using now, and a Husky a friend gifted also, but the Echo is my fav. But then I'm about old enough to quit tree work and take up quilting :D
yep, i like the Echo line, in fact i had to replace the line going into tank that would let air go in when tipped down ran great on full tank but about 1/2 full would sputter ! thanks for this video as it will help me on next redo for sure !
I have some many projects like this. 2 or 3 chainsaws 12 or so lawnmowers and this weekend a riding mower. Also had one of my buddies who owns a bunch of hotdog carts wants me to fix his carts and other projects welding so I might have lots to make videos for here. Want to thank you along with several other people that have been given me the idea to do the things like you do. Get things that may or may not work and bring them back to life
Chain always off when getting a saw to run less danger then after it's running add the chain right direction & adjust the carb speeds..lol Keep'em comin !!
This is my forth time trying to complete watching this video. Something about your videos Mustie, if im even slightly tired and I watch your videos to relax I'm out within 10 min. Until a "Noise Alert" wakes me up. lol
Pull the fuel mixture screws out. Spray carb clean in the mixture screw holes, blow out with light pressure air. Reinstall both mixture screws. Set low to 1 1/2 turns out. And the high to 2 1/2 turns out.
Its obvious that he doesn't know how to fix this simple problem. Its even funnier you all think this dipshit is some sort of mechanic God. I wouldn't let this guy fix a sandwich! Let alone anything mechanical.
I think what impresses me the most about Mustie's videos. Is his dexterity and tool manipulation. Maneuvering that Allen wrench one handed was a site to be hold. I've yet to be let down by a video.
You just gave me an idea on how to pre-shred some barrels i wanted to reduce to filament. Duh, cut it with the chain-saw, wood can be far tougher. I wanted to go at it with a grinder, but i don't trust the carbide china import blade and it doesn't fit with a guard on, this just saved my bacon :))
Good morning Mustie! I love your videos. Just this morning it occurred to me why you are so compelling to watch. With your positive attitude and mellow style, you are the Bob Ross of engine repair. Keep up the awesome work.
brassman5 lovely comment and so true. Nice one

He reminds me of Mr. Roger’s without the cardigan sweater.

Just bought a ride on lawn mower that wasn’t running for $100. And fixed it with the help of you videos. How do you know when you're truly a member of Mustie's Army? When you start talking back to him...
Been there, done that! "Hey Must... there's 4 bolts - look, there's one behind the pull start! No no, it'll never come off like that - there's a 4th... ah, you found it!"
notxarb21 and when he makes a comment (50:50 chance comes out wrong 90% of the time) that shows he watched AVE’s latest video too
All ways talking back to him lol
Then I must be a Mustie General...I'm yelling, cussing & even having whole conversations with him :)
Love mustie i know i can watch something good not crap
That was some fancy finger work with the Allen wrench. I'm going to have to try that on my Ole lady.😂😂😂😂
Hadn't seen that far into the vid when I first read this.....now I get it! :D
I think it needs to be the allen key style with the swivel head / ball head.
I was also impressed with his gentle touch of the ol fingers there
😂😂😂😭
I read this comment right after that smooth dance like routine with those fingers. I think he was showing off to us
Thank's for taking the time to post your videos for your followers we appreciate it !

I've done this a lot as well but only on downdraft carbs like this. Can't seem to get it to work on crossflow for some reason
It will more times than not draw out whatever crap may be stuck in the jets
David Lacey nice info guys 👌

Yeah, my Sunday morning ritual can begin. A new video from Mustie. Thank you for the info you give.
Jesse Meeks Jr. clever man
15:55 "no brake, when men were men and you cut a leg off with pride" I laughed out loud!!
Great, great statement. We about died when we heard that.
Yeah its all fun and games till you get to see what no chain brake will do to a human! Not a good look.

You work that allen wrench like you were born with it in your hand! lol
the ladys love it
No waiting until Wednesday this week. I told real life to take an hour off and for once it listened. I even knew where my glasses were and of course I had a half gallon of coffee nearby. Thanks again Mustie1!
Chainsaws and turkey!! Must be lunch time with Mustie1.👍👍✌ Thanks for having me over for a visit bud
That model was manufactured from 1980-1984. Thanks for the video.
No chain brake yes maybe 78
Chain breaks were an option until 1985 when they became mandatory.
I have an Echo CS330EVL that doesn't have a chain brake either. Best saw I own and I use it all the time.
Perfect timing! I'm about to "attempt" to restore a homelite bandit I found at the junkyard So thanks for the motivational video, as usual! 👍
I love these videos, they have inspired me so much and i have learned so much off of these videos, i'm 16 and have a small shop in my garage and currently fixing 2 weed eaters, fixing small engines is a very fun thing to do and a nice thing to learn.

Am I ever going to fix a chainsaw? probably not. Will I sit through an hour of Mustie1 pulling one to bits? no problem. Keep up the good videos :)
For real though lol
Go look for one at a yard sale. It's something to do, right?
Justin Adair hip joint theory
Awsome vid mustie I found your videos a couple of weeks ago and I had the idea of buying old trimmers that don’t work and fixing them up . So far so good thanks for the inspiration/idea
Morning mustie. I think you are right about the carb. Very tricky machines. But you are the man so. Love it as always. Have a great day my friend.....
older echo chainsaws like that have common faults
1. the fuel filters melt over time not letting fuel through OR sucking in the melted filter blocking up the fuel line

Thanks Darren, this reminded me about the pile of yard sale saws I have stashed in the back corner of my garage... my wife brings them home to keep me busy (out of the house)
Two things:
It's behind the handle, man, oh you found it.
The Allen wrench action was dam impressive.
This is peak Allen wrench technique in action!
Cases and everything! You have the best luck! I'm surprised they didn't come with trees!!!
Ralph 😂
love the videos keep them coming!! your an engineering guru who will not be beaten
I have a number of saws I have picked up over the years. Now I have the knowledge and tricks to start repairing them. Thanks for your videos. One trick I have learned is to go to the airport and buy 100LL to use in all of my power equipment. No ethanol, therefore no water absorption.
That line that you called a return line is actually the impulse line from the crankcase that provides pulses to operated the fuel pump in the carb.
the sound the engine makes when he puts air to that hose had me assuming the same. strange he did not hear that.
I so look forward to Musti's videos on Sunday Mornings . Thank you Darren. Great content as usual !
Ted Bishop I love it
Delighted to see a new video come up. Better than all the crap on UK TV nowadays. Great work i'm learning all the time. Thank you.
Thanks Mustie, another great Sunday working in the garage.
"On this episode of Hoarders we meet Mustie1 who can't say no to garage sale freebies"
He better enjoy them while he can...In just a day, you can become like the rest of us, and have to PAY for your junk...
Starting my morning with coffee and a Mustie rehabilitation video. Does it get any better? Lemme see.... nope.
Dave Rhodes absolutely not 👌
I have had 2 of those old echo saws for years! I ha e been through them front to back over the years. I also have one of the John Deere saws that was made by echo that is twin cylinder. Echo makes great stuff
Nice to see someone else do the same stuff I do trying to get it running & know you need new parts. Still kinda fun to try. 😀👍👌
The chain will loosen as it heats up, so snug when cool will be right when hot.
Time to take off & go through the carburetor to check for bad gas, clogged needle valve, or any other of the Mustie check list that I know by heart now :)
PS> I keep a little lighter that runs like a tiny blowtorch around for just such situations!
Excellent. After watching this I'm confident to have a go at fixing my chainsaws. I have four that stacked up after failing to start one after the other.
Little Echos kick ass Mustie! My Dad has had 2 for over 30 years and they are still running good! You found a steal there.
Love the interaction....Keep up the awesome work and videos!
Enjoyed watching.
Before I watch the video. Of course it will run! 😃
Enrico Valiant 100%
He ALWAYS makes them run. How about that Vee Dub Bus?!! It is like the engines see him coming and they say, "Alright everyone! Straighten up and work right! You! Lifters! Stop slacking!! Rings! I wan't high compression! I don't care how many decades it has been! Coil! Coil? Sir, the coil pooped himself. He doesn't look good. That is OK. There will be a replacements."
And I was just working on my Echo trimmer yesterday.
Real men don't need no chain kick-back clutch! Sissies!
Jim "Scarface" Hanse
Hey mustie, twirling that Allen key with your thumb is just showing off. :)
Had a wonderful conversation with ya today and thanks for letting me help! lol good stuff as usual my friend. Have a great day
I have learned so much from your videos...thank you
I believe I just saw your dinner running thru the yard...LOL.
in Sweden we call the bar, the sword....also i was sitting here wishing you would hold up the bar high and say "I raised the bar in this video!" :D
TheDriver454 lol
It is impressive to be humourous in a second language, or third - you probably speak German too. Source: used to live in Uppsala as an expat.
you never cease to amaze me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yep, i like the Echo line, in fact i had to replace the line going into tank that would let air go in when tipped down ran great on full tank but about 1/2 full would sputter ! thanks for this video as it will help me on next redo for sure !
Chain saws can be so persnickety! Thus you see them in the "free" pile! 😁
Plains, Trains, and Automobiles ("You're going the wrong way...")
Smokey and the Bandit. Bandit talking to Frog when they leave the choke and puke. :)
Get things that may or may not work and bring them back to life
I laughed out loud when you blew air into the gas tank twice. As always I enjoyed the video thank you.
I still wanna know if the horn on the forklift works :D
Chain always off when getting a saw to run less danger then after it's running add the chain right direction & adjust the carb speeds..lol Keep'em comin !!
Sunday morning coffee and a Mustie1 video. Excellent.
Nothing beats a clean CRAB LOL
LOL why on earth are you trying to tell mustie how start an engine lol ?? is this your first time Mike Smith
@@dubbeh of course it's his first time here. That would be the same as telling a brain surgeon how to do stitches lol
Its obvious that he doesn't know how to fix this simple problem. Its even funnier you all think this dipshit is some sort of mechanic God.
I wouldn't let this guy fix a sandwich! Let alone anything mechanical.
Mike Smith Maybe you should start your own UA-cam channel
I think what impresses me the most about Mustie's videos. Is his dexterity and tool manipulation. Maneuvering that Allen wrench one handed was a site to be hold. I've yet to be let down by a video.
Time passes by watching your videos, thanks.
