    This is one of the most underrated 3D printing channels, time to boost this puppy!

    I have a creality cr-01 in the mail, which is essentially the same specs as the lynx, though cr-01 is a touch more high res though some of the results are also software related.
    Happy adaptive replications.

    Nice work Tommy!!!

    Just wondering if you have a gauge block to test the accuracy and maybe the repeatability as well.

      Not currently. In the future I might be able to do more rigorous testing with proper equipment.

    How long does it take to scan an object? I bought this scanner a year ago and still can't get it to work. The light on the scanner flashes for hours. I just want to scan a bunch of small car and truck parts.

      10-15 minutes usually for an average sized scan. I used the handheld mode and then combined multiple scans into one. The whole process can take some time when scanning multiple things and combining and editing them.

      @@TommyHoughton 10-15 hours? Maybe I didn't leave it to scan long enough.

      Sorry, I meant to say minutes.

      @@TommyHoughton thanks it's ok, I guess I need to get a new computer and see if that helps. It just flashes forever.

    When did you order the scanner?

    • @TommyHoughton
      @TommyHoughton  10 місяців тому

      About a month ago. It took just over a week to arrive once ordered.

      Is there anywhere we can have a conversation? I want to pick your brain before I order the 3d scanner.

      Okay, here’s my questions. Obviously the scanner is newer and there’s not a lot of material or reviews out there. Most of them it seems like they are sponsored by sending the content creators free scanners. I was on the verge of buying the scanner but there was a few people claiming that it was the worst thing and the software sucks. There seems to be three bad reviews and one good one. So I haven’t ordered it yet. That being said, I want to make transmission brackets, engine mounts, a custom inner frame all for my cnc plasma cutter.
      What is the tracking like on this for a car?
      How long am I going to spend scanning items to get a useable scan?
      Is it worth buying this current generation or should I skip it and wait for the next build to be better?
      What’s the biggest con to this scanner?
      What have you found to be the most useful thing to use it for?

    • @TommyHoughton
      @TommyHoughton  10 місяців тому

      @@AndyBdrifts Tracking is ok, It’s not amazing, I haven’t tested it on the body of a car, but I would assume I would require a form of coating and tracking materials (perhaps dots although this is a guess) to get the best results. Since it covers a larger tracking area than medium format scanners, it is able to grab onto more points for reference.
      Scanning time is not too bad, I usually do a couple slow passes around the object to make sure I’m getting as much detail as possible for processing. It depends what you’re scanning, for example the engine block took about 10-15m to scan because I wanted as much detail and several scans to align. Processing time does take a bit, even when switching to a powerful pc, but this happens with large scans.
      I honestly believe you should wait for the next gen, as there are some beliefs that this scanner is a actually a rebrand of another 3D scanner that released a year or two ago.
      3D scanning is an investment, not just in the hardware, but in the time spent in the software, which will probably be equal to or much much more time spent than the scanning.
      There isn’t a “biggest con” to this scanner, but I haven’t spent tens of hours using it trying to find it. I found it similar to the CR-Scan Lizard, it’s a bit awkward to use stock, but after some time it’s alright. (Holding and using it that is. The biggest downside I believe is the software, it could do with some optimising, and honestly will require more learning than the scanner itself. There are some tutorials online by other users who wanted more information.
      Most useful thing would probably be using it to scan organic or hard to model shapes (My CAD experience is still limited) and also scanning complex areas like the engine to design brackets and modifications. Making for Motorsport made a video explaining how to reverse engineer and use these scans, which I think is of the selling points of 3D scanning in general (although large format helps to get more reference material and help with larger projects.)
      If you have any more questions please let me know.

      Hopefully the next generation of medium format ones are even cheaper.
