Schwalbe, Continental, they’re using high thread count for the casing, soft compounds in the center, which is helping with lower rolling resistance as well as grip, but that’s why they puncture easier and wear out faster. Similar to a summer sport tire for race cars. If you want longevity you’re going to get a hard compound and a much less ride. Not making excuses for the industry more reality check by the physics of it all. Of course, the industry could sympathize with us and make them cheaper since they wear out faster, but they are the ones in control

I ride around Tahoe and can confirm that lesser tires get shredded, ended up switching to 47mm Specialized Pathfinders (with inserts) which have been bomb-proof; only issue is no grip. Conti Race Kings are definitely the way and will be my next set when I get tired of sliding out on turns.
Yesss that area requires bigger for sure and switching to a 2.1 has made it way more enjoyable to ride out there. Definitely been eyeing those race kings as well 🤙
@@wherespinto Just careful with going to 2.2s. I could never get my 2.25s (or even the 2.1 Mezcals) to work with the Lauf Seigla. Would flex the rim too much when hitting a hard turn or (especially with 2.25) any reasonable sprint. It would actually foul the bridge of the True Grit fork on a forced deep compression and on the rear if you grab the rim and CS at the same time, you can make it foul. Being a few mm larger and ruled the 2.2 Conti Kings for me (that and Schwalbe tend to measure true to size where Contis generally a touch over).
Hence I've gone with the TBs 2.1s as the tread is smaller (and carbon wheels have a little less flex) to just fit (have a layer of 3M 2228 tape on the crown of the fork and inner CS just in case).
I think the rim makes a huge difference. I run that tire for local xc races that are essentially gravel races and with reynolds rim they absolutely required a compressor but so has every other tire I’ve tried on these rims.
I use a compressor for all tubeless tires even still you can have some issues ether getting them on or not seating properly with different brands 🤙
The only reason to not run MTB tires on your gravel bike: frame clearance…

When I was on the TB I had the rear last for 1000 miles before it needed to be swapped. At around 700-800 is when it started to show for me. I ride SoCal trails, which shares some trails to where you ride. Which version of their casing did you try, the Super Ground? Do you think you can test out the Schwalbe Racing Ralph(a little slower than the TB, but more durable?) and Vittoria Peyote(2.25)?
Thats a pretty good run on your tries, I had the addix speedgrip. Appreciate the tire info ill have a look into those, i know lot of folks running a thunderburt / ralph combo for more technical races be curious to see if the ralph last any longer 🤙

same experience, really want to like them. My rear started seeping and center tread is worn out. Have punctured my rear a few times. It has sealed up, but have lost confidence. But they roll sooo good and are comfortable!
I mean if i was made of money that fast rolling would be a no brainer all day 🤣
@@wherespinto more than just cost. Last race i apparently punctured at some point and it re-sealed. Not the first time that has happened. Ended the race on 14psi. Cant trust it.
Have the ‘Burts’ on my 650 wheels, 42mm pathfinders on my 700c wheels for summer/tarmac use (no mud clearance) . G-one 40mm for 700c winter riding.
Thats a solid quiver of tires 🤙

Great video! You think you can test out the Maxxis Aspen or Aspen ST? Or the faster xc option from Challenge?
Ill take a look at those not usually a maxis fan haven’t had good luck with there tires in the past normally wear out pretty quick.

I'm currently running the Burts. Love them, great traction and surprisingly fast on the pavement. The sidewall however is weak and after a few months the rear tire is almost a slick in the center. I think my next tires to try will be the Race Kings.

Are you using the snake skin version? My favourite rear tyre for xc racing.

Changed my first tp5000 tyre last night, these are famous for being a size too small and impossible to fit by hand! I have run the 32mm off road once, sketchy as!
Great tire definitely can be a pain getting on and off I know that sketchy had them on my tt in a triathlon they had a section of gravel we had to ride through 🤣
What psi were you normally running when it punctured? Running inserts?
No inserts no interest for inserts, i run everything at 30 dont really change from that.
@@wherespinto optimum tire pressure for speed with these is going to be more around 20-25psi (depending on your weight) and that will also grip better and be less likely to flat.
Ran it double flatted in my second race with it. Also it was floaty and makes cornering feels vague and inconsistent.

Try continental Race Kings
A wider tire at a lower pressure will roll faster. A thinner softer casing will roll faster. I went from riding a 700x43 Panaracer Gravel King SK tire on an i18mm rim at 40psi to a 700x47 Specialized Pathfinder Pro tire on an i30mm rim at 26psi. What a huge difference. So much faster. No problem with punctures. A 700x56 (29x2.2) or even wider Gravel specific tire on an i25-30mm rim is the direction that Gravel bikes need to go.
@@marksandoval5361 Bigger the better 💪 couldn’t agree more we’re slowly moving in that direction more people running 45s when 40s used to be big tires haha Just need the bike companies to catch up and offer bigger clearance thats what sold me on the lauf 🤙
