Here is a cinematography breakdown of our latest doco shot with Contax Zeiss lenses on the BMPCC6K. Hope you enjoy this type of video and let me know if this is something you want me to keep doing in the future :). Cheers, Flo
Great video, appreciate the detail. Tip for filming in environments with microshocks (manufacturing, building sites, live music) put down thick yoga matte that works as a equalising layer to capture most of the small shocks..
The precision of each shot is clear now, your approach is almost like a study of your environment and the final captured image a result of your study. I guess that's how it should be, but I'm still learning. I laughed at the tripod in shot...I'm notorious for it so to see it happen to made my day!
Haha I was like ‘really’?! How did I not see that I don’t know haha. Thanks for watching man and glad you’ve enjoyed the format. Thanks for the support as always 😘
Fantastic! Thanks very much for this breakdown (and the original video!) You got amazing results with such a simple process. I've now re-watched the original a few times. The audio is nice and clear. The visuals are great. It would be interesting what you would have come up with if you had been there for two full days.
Thank you so much and glad you’ve enjoyed it :) !! Really wish I had more time but also interesting to have to make it work with one day, pushes you to make quicker decisions and work on instinct I guess.
Thanks for the breakdown. I'm learning so much from you. The little things like what lens mm you use and what stop you use are super helpful for a beginner like me. Also this was such a nice lesson in using natural light. Really lovely, I got chills.
recently got myself a setup like yours and i really do appreciate the cinematography/doco breakdown as this might be something im looking to get into! cheers
Excellent. Very helpful to see the thought process. Perhaps it is my Scandinavian background, but I quite liked the white walls in the final scene you talked about. Uplifting and bright fits so much better with the story than a room with darker walls. 😄
@@OfTwoLands Norway. Winter is coming 🥶 although only the dark, very seldom snow due to the Gulf stream where I live. Perhaps why we appreciate bright walls and light 😂
I love this video man. Your work is prestine... Great stuff man. I have a set of Vintage Pentacon Prakticar lenses so I love videos that use vintage lenses because i need these tips as much as I can get them.
@@OfTwoLands I'm loving them so far. They have minimal distortion and virtually no focus breathing even on the zoom lens. I need to take my rig out and shoot some more stuff. First thing I shot was my mums birthday and I'm still grading that,
Beautifully shot - especially considering the limitations of the location, timing, etc. Very helpful breakdown too. Thanks for creating this, very helpful.
Great video! It would be nice to see the lenses listed on screen when you talk about the scenes that they were used in. I personally have the 50mm f1.4, 28mm f2.8, and the 35mm f2.8. I'm interested in the 18mm f4 that you mentioned now, it looks like it would give a unique look to many situations. Again great video here and great job of explaining everything.
Do you have a recommendation for Canon FD adapters? I have been using Viltrox Speedbooster to go from MFT -> EF-S -> FD, but it feels like I am using some IQ with so much adapting.
The metabones speedbooster is amazing. Very sharp. Love the extra stop of light. I have one for ef as well as fd because i just happen to have a lot of these lenses due to my stills photography.
Man these are always really well made by you, they have a personality of their own! Amazing! I would be interested in your post color process as well? You made a video of that process like a year ago, but I would be curious to see how its evolved or changed and applied to the docu style?
Thanks a lot !! My colour grading process hasn’t really changed to be honest. I still use Filmconvert and then tweak tones and saturation mostly. For doco it’s the same process but i usually don’t go too intense to keep the vibe of the subject the way I remember it.
@@OfTwoLands I find it amazing that your soft, organic grades are consistently the best I see on YT, and yet your process is so simple and you're not even shooting BRAW. The shots in the Meike 35 video were mind-blowing. Looked like a big-budget feature film. Not sure how you're doing it!!!
Hey appreciate the format and information of the lesson. May I just ask, what is the aspect ratio when the stills are shown? I see it in some documentaries and its really pleasing with the minimal small black bars. Would love to know more about that. Thanks in advance!
hi there! this shoots are amazing!!! Im having trouble with a Carl Zeiss 25mm 2.8 qbm lense mounted on my BMPCC 6K. It doesn’t focus to infinity! have gone over any of this issues with other lenses of yours?
Depends on the project really. I love the look of the Zeiss Contax but can appreciate the flexibility of my 18-35 sigma. As for Canon FD I like them for stills but find them a bit too ‘vintage’ for video work sometimes.
"How to film on vintage lenses" First, attach vintage lens to camera. Second, hit record. ;-) Awesome work as always! I shoot and edit stuff like this quite a bit, so it was interesting seeing your specific process. And I love the Contax lenses. I want my own set.
The content was really well prepared and and I do like your passion. There are only 2 things concerning me - the first is one of the reasons you mentioned led to choosing the vintage Carl Zeiss lenses - they are from the same period as the filmed machinery (from 70s - well to be exact you have used the MM versions which came later in 80s or even 90s depending on the serial number) and what kind of lenses would you use if the machinery was from 19century or a modern futuristic prototype? Don’t take me wrong I really do not mean it negatively, just for me an interesting reason (I know there were other reasons as well). And the second thing is the name nomenclature of these fine Zeiss lenses you used to film the doc - and I am aware that many people talk about them as Contax Zeiss lenses - so in this from it is quite acceptable, but when you say I used Contax 50mm 1.4 - there is no such lens in the world - to be precise, you used Carl Zeiss lenses for Contax/Yasica mount, Contax was originally a camera name made by Zeiss Ikon and later in 1973 in cooperation with Yasica to create a camera system using German Carl Zeiss lenses (produced both in Germany or Japan, some models only in Germany or Japan)
Haha shooting vintage machinery with vintage lenses is the idea, doesn't have to be the exact same year.. And really ? Of course I know the history of Contax and Zeiss but do you really expect me to say '50mm F1.4 Carl Zeiss lenses for Contax/Yasica mount' each time haha ?! I show the lenses and you know them, saying Contax 50 1.4 should be more than enough. When I shoot with Canon lenses by myself or with people you ask for a 50mm 1.4 not Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM.. The same way I say bmpcc and not Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K each time.. Anyway, thanks for watching :).
It's really hard to catch or listen to all of what you're saying with the music in the background. I notice in your video you talk about waiting until clouds, people and cars were clear. I think music in the background is the aural equivalent of those things in the audio "frame."

Pads are great. I keep a couple of 3×3 and 1×2 pads with me in the event I'm shooting outside or just need to be kind to my knees or if its wet.

Thanks so much mate !!

bit offtopic ... do you edit in FCPX and grade in resolve? how is your workflow? cheers
Edited and graded in FCPX for this one and that’s usually the case for most of my work unless I shoot raw. I use Filmconvert for color grading :).
Would you use the zeiss contax lens regularly? Or you rather use sigma or canon fd?
Depends on the project really. I love the look of the Zeiss Contax but can appreciate the flexibility of my 18-35 sigma. As for Canon FD I like them for stills but find them a bit too ‘vintage’ for video work sometimes.
Are you using a speedbooster with these Contax lenses, or are they just a normal K&F barrel adapter with no electronics?
BTW, I love your work, thank you for making this, keep up the great work.
Just a simple adapter, either from K&F or Fotodiox :). The 18mm is cine moded though.

How do you find the IR on thr BMPCC 6K? Great work man
Thank you !! It’s actually pretty good, I use NISI irnd when shooting bigger projects just in case though :).
are there links to the lenses you have used?
No since they are vintage lenses and usually bought from eBay or similar second hand sites.

I shoot with Wise Cfast :).
