Totally agree man, a lot of people on youtube forget about story and meaning when making videos. There is a lot more to filmmaking than fast paced transitions and crazy luts.
Kez I’ve seen a few of your ‘useful’ comments around.
@@kezzatube45 Haha when did I criticised the majority of YT users ? You obviously haven't looked at my work, I make docos and commercials for a living :). UA-cam isn't' life :).
I'll be honest with you Mark. Seriously you deserve a million plus subscribers. Your content is great, is detailed, informative, has seriously great visuals and production value, it doesn't feel like it's your hobby so it's got less efforts than you put in your filmmaking career. Your UA-cam videos are just as great in quality as your films.
Thank you! This is very kind!
We fully agree!
You have no idea how much I needed this!
4 hours ago I was sitting there thinking “man I need to go rewatch Mark Bone’s documentary videos after work” and at that moment you dropped this. 💣💣💣
Finally, someone who talks about what’s important in doc. I’m currently in development for a doc and every video on it is mentioning:
- camera and lighting
- editing
- where to interview
All of which matter, but not when you haven’t even got a story yet! Seriously… location for interviews is probably the least important aspect of doc film.
LETS GOOOOO !! Just found your channel like 2 days ago and bruhhh it’s already helped me so much in filming 🥺🥺🖤 Thankyou !!!
Mark is the truth. Been following him for a minute. You should also check out Danny Gervitz and Zach Ramelan if you havent. I started watching them all around the same time. Big Big Help!!!
Literallllyyyy I HAD THE SAAAAAMEEEEE FEEELING SOME MONTHS AGO HE IS THE OG!
Let's gooooo it's everyday brooooooooooooooooo
This is the best video the UA-cam algorithm has served up to me in a good, long time. Keep it up Mark. Such simple truths, yet so many are obsessed with getting the “cinematic look” over story.
Thank you UA-cam!!!
I really love how you get in depth with the art of storytelling instead of those ones who just stitch footages with crazy transitions. Salute Mark!😊👍
This is much more up my street. I get tired of seeing endless b-roll videos that although look great, don’t really say anything. The story and characters are what I personally relate to. Cheers mate.
Always, MB is the best at not focusing on the gear but what's actually important: making people invested in the film with story and character and theme.
This is by far my favorite filmmaking channel. Great work Mark! I’m signing up
Thanks Cory!!
Man I’m so lucky to find you
Thank you so much
Great advice. These steps are explained in some story arc videos but why it’s important and how it’s done are often not explained nearly as well. Thank you for sharing this.
Also a big 👍🏻 from me. Thank you very much Mark for this good tips! 🙏🏻

Sales are now open, just a few spots left! We will be closing sales once he hit our capacity.
Compare Canon R5, R6 and Sony A7S 3 in photography
Love that video Mark. Less gear and tricks, but more storytelling. Aimless < Assertive Thanks for vid and more of that, please! 👍
I'm in😊
Hey Mark, understandably you don't want to release too much info but I was just curious if the course we an in-person or live feed class and that's why you can only take a certain amount of people?
Been looking for the concepts you just shared for a year now. You know what the viewing public is looking for. Another reason your channel is so valuable. Thanks Mark.
Thanks for the VALUABLE content and tips! 🙏🙏
You give some really great advice! Thanks for creating this!
I just started watching your channel about 2 weeks ago and I have to say I've been super blessed by your work.
Thanks Mark. Another great video.
I liked video as the ad was playing... I already know it won't disappoint. Thank you for everything you've shared! To M from M
These are really the truth of storytelling. Very helpful for filmmakers who just start their attempts in documentary. subbed!
Thanks Mark 🌎 Greetings from Colombia. The Venezuelan immigrant writer 🇻🇪
You're doing great work mate! Keep it up!
Very insightful. Thank you, Mark!
YEEEESSSSSSS. Finally a video that actually shows you how to make a good movie, keep it up 👊
Its interesting that your observing so many directionless shooting style...I figured the first thing you need in any doc is a good story and then you use the shots to help tell that story, but I guess it's a big problem. Perhaps we have a generation of filmakers who are starting by learning the flamer gear over learning story telling techniques first.
Can't wait to see what you guys come up with!
Thanks Vince. I appreciate all your support
Hey, Mark thank you for this video. I'm looking forward to the documentary class..
Thank you Aaron! Looking forward to releasing it to the world! Just left the office after a 14hour day of working on it :)
WOO SO PUMPED! Signed up and ready to learn :) Thanks Mark
I'm glad that I stumbled across this video. This the route that I've taken with my career and I'm going to work on shooting my 1st documentary about a young entrepreneur and her nail shop. I knw it sound uninteresting but I really want to tell her story and get this experience under my belt. I start tomorrow! Thx ya for this 🙏🏾
You're videos are practically the only ones I watch repeatedly. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion!
Almost don't want to share these books, however, having more people who know how to *tell compelling stories* is better than being one of the few.
So, read, *The Art Of Dramatic Writing* & *The Art Of Creative Writing* from Lajos Egri. And *Vales Technique of Screen and Television Writing* by Eugene Vale.
Plus the usual like Robert McKee, *Write for your life* etc
Put to practice those teaching and lessons and you'll be in the top 1% of the best storytellers living or dead. At least, that's my belief. Talent? Well --, you come with that.
Try, The Anatomy of Story: 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller by John Truby and Story Genius by Lisa Cron 👍
Don't tell everyone though.
@@AJ-kv1po Thanks, I have John Truby stuff, though I purposefully avoid books about steps. My focus is being able to craft story no matter the medium. Plays/Novels/Screenplays. I'm not looking for templates. Story structure is defined by each story.
Assertive vs. Aimless FilmMaking - YES! Great points. Thanks for sharing!
Can't wait to join
Thank you so much, I recently found your channel and it is videos like this that separate your content from everyone else. I feel so great full to live in a time where I can learn so much over the internet. Keep it up!
Thank You very much Sir for this video. Thank You for those awesome as well as informative words..!!
Can't wait for the course !
Love your videos, you are sharing more than the gear or the how, but they why.. also lighting, Lighting > Camera. Thanks Mark!
Omg finally somebody that shares a good advice!!! So many youtubers “filmmakers” only trying to sell you stuff and how “cinematic” looks and totally forget about the basic of filmmaking
Subscribed!!
🙏🏼💯🙏🏼
Pumped!
It is quite strange to make videos in these Corona times, but It hasn't meant less work, but other kinds of customers, often less aware of the work flow. I had literally have a customer tell me: " I want you to shoot this, use this music and add some fastmotion clips of this and make it a 45 minute documentary!". I started in advertising in the 90' where the printed magazine was king. What worked then was the personal story and a face on the cover!! This applies to docus too . Just like a feature, you need the Me story and if there isn't a character in your docu, it becoms you, the filmmaker who tells why and how this docu came about. It is really as easy as that. You are assured it always communicates a message, even if that message is inconsistant, i.e. you get thrown out the country half way through, or the story takes an unexpected twist, it just adds quality and credibility. The intricate details arise in editing where you frame it with your narration. You are just like a crime novelist, you start out writing about one character, often yourself not knowing who did it and it is perfectly fine, as the story will take on a life on its own. This is how you make a good documentary, you work it ower in edit until as many questions as possible are answered and in the process it takes life.
I went to film school for my MFA and I got a lot of theory but not a lot of hands on experience. However for our thesis we shot a documentary about the political issues in Puerto Rico and used theory and in our own way, but also gorilla filmmaking tactics to make it happen. We have now been accepted into two film festivals and we're awarded with a Telly award. I do wish these "institutions" would get into the nitty gritty like you are. I love the content you are pushing out and can't wait to see what this master class is all about. To growth! cheers
Thanks mate! Way to go crushing it on that film. It’s the best way to learn
Totally agree! So many beautifully shot but empty videos being made that have no grit or story, so much emphasis on equipment, style, 'cinematicness'😁
Excited! 🎬
Man perfect timing I had a project like this in my head
sick!! Go crush it man
Really needed the clarification of assertive vs aimless, I have been feeling the later, aimless for quite some time. Thanks for the great tips, Mark!
Hi Mark i have 15 years filmming Whales and wildlife in Peninsula Valdes, Patagonia Argentina. have a ton of footage that i sell in stock market but always wish to make my own documentary... this video give me one more push to that dream, hope i can learn from you and obviusly i will love to join your course as soon as i can! hope to see more content like this on the channel, thank you very much for sharing yor knowledge! you have a new suscriber here! keep going!!!
Thank you!! So glad you’ve join the community
excellent content ! I've subbed and am on your waiting list
Really appreciate this assertive story telling. I am fast becoming bored with beautiful videos that don't have a story to tell (hehehe, orange and teal)
Thank you Mark! Your videos help me so much!
super cool video and still have a lot of knowledge to share than just advertising a future class.
*Golden tips man!* Definitely writing these down!
Excellent advice all around, thanks Mark!
So helpful with your insights about filmmaking. Thank Mark.
thanks a lot for these tips Mark, it opens my mind to a lot of possibility in film making, especially short films. Thanks again. I could not cerntainly afford the masterclass because I live in one of the poorest country in the world (Madagascar), but these tips already give me enough for creating something new and better than I had never done before.
This is excellent content!!!!!! Thank you
on the wait list!
Yes!!!
Every so often I come back to watch this video to remind myself of a few things.
Thanks mark for the great content.
Love this, Mr Bone. Thanks.
this might be the most valuable video you released in this channel.
Omgawsh that "I dont know what to do with my hands" was money! Great video Mark!
😄

Just discovered your channel, inspiring, many thx !
I like your videos man, already watched three of them and subscribed, thank you!

Thank you! Really appreciate the positive feedback :)
Always stoked if I get a notification from your new upload! Always a dope video! I am in the final stages of a doc I have been working on the past 1,5 year. I think I am guilty aswel 😅 on aimless shooting but mostly because there are so many awesome things happening 😅 affraid to miss out I guess 😜 keep up the awesome work! Looking forward to the next one and the course!
Wow. Very informative contents. Thank you so much.
Hi Mark thank you so much, I follow your advice and also I'm interested in the masterclass, go on with courage and faith in the heart...
Awesome information. Highly appreciated!
Really looking forward to your documentary class! So much motivation and ideas boiling inside of me but want to channel it properly-thanks for these videos!
OMG I’ve learned so much in this 7:20 minute video. I just came across this by accident but it really put everything into perspective for me. I’ve been shoot random footage and editing them together hoping for something beautiful. Yesterday I wrote a script for a GMC commercial went out and shot it and, it was amazing. It was amazing because I knew exactly what I wanted to convey to the viewers. Dispute the fact the shoot got rained out I was able to get some decent footage. I’m a subscriber now thanks . VibezElite on all social media
Keep killin it man
These are some solid tips, and is well organized. Something I wish was shared more on UA-cam or better yet, I wish more films and stories were told on here, but it also might not be the place for that.
Always great stuff MB!
Thanks mate!
Fantastic points. Love to see a short break down of a small business promo cross documentary :)
Very great tips thank you!!!
Awesome Bro, this is the part that’s been missing for me and for some reason struggling with it
This will definitely help though thanks 🤙🏻
A huge thanks goes to you, Mark, for yet again showing the importance of creating real connections with both the players and the audience! Wanna buy an epic cinematic looking LUT? LOL
Thanks for sharing the stuff in your brain, bro! So useful to all video work, not just documentary. You rock! 🍻
Mark, Thanks so much for the content. Really enjoy your approach and I'm looking forward to the documentary course. Keep the long hair bruv its illmatic! - cheers
Two minutes in and I subbed. As a filmmaker who wants to start getting into documentary films, I love this content. Please keep it going!
Very curious, love this channel Mark!
Early bird signed up! Let’s goo. This is the next level shit we’re looking for.
I love your channel, I've learned a lot here!!! I'd love to make it and I hope I can afford it. Brazilian coin is too bad by now :(
Best video ever Mark!! I have watched it 3 times in a row. My wife doesnt allow me a 4 time now haha. Thanks for the tips
Thank you for making this!! You have definitely put in the work to make something like this and I am so excited to go through it when it comes out.
You are a weapon, thank you for these videos
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. 👍🏻☀️📸🌋🌴☕
Nice information. Makes complete sense.
another great video
Finally this is how your videos should be. Not that clickbait garbage, leave that to those who are into this to sell shit. You are way better than them.
How much is the class? While I do agree that a lot of filmmakers including myself make aimless films, but some of it is due to not being able to afford good tutorials from cinematographers that we respect and love. Hopefully, there's a middle ground with your pricing. I can tell that you're knowledgeable about the craft and work hard, so I'm not expecting anything for free. Hope that makes sense and I also registered as well. God bless you, and keep being great at what you do ✊🏾
@@imnmediakc8533 i agree with you
@@imnmediakc8533 Exactly!
Yeah, I wanna know the price too!
Neither I do expect it to be free, depends on how much and how good the tutorial is but I would be fine with around 200-500€ price including taxes if it really helps the career! :)
Hey all! Great question about the price. We will be releasing this info by early next week at latest. We've been discussing a price that will make the course accessible and also represent the value of it. We will have over 50 individual teaching modules, podcasts, downloadable course PDF's and more (not to mention all the giveaways for those who sign up). This is the complete outline of shooting documentary and commercial work. We know and believe this content will help elevate yours projects for any client or documentary. Cannot wait to release it! It's been over a year in the making.
Good Advice Mark. Cheers
Really cool content dude! Thanks for the tips.
This is great advice. Thank you
Yessss so excited to learn more with the documentary course!
