Totally agree man, a lot of people on youtube forget about story and meaning when making videos. There is a lot more to filmmaking than fast paced transitions and crazy luts.
@@kezzatube45 Haha when did I criticised the majority of YT users ? You obviously haven't looked at my work, I make docos and commercials for a living :). UA-cam isn't' life :).
Hey Mark, understandably you don't want to release too much info but I was just curious if the course we an in-person or live feed class and that's why you can only take a certain amount of people?
This is much more up my street. I get tired of seeing endless b-roll videos that although look great, don’t really say anything. The story and characters are what I personally relate to. Cheers mate.
I'll be honest with you Mark. Seriously you deserve a million plus subscribers. Your content is great, is detailed, informative, has seriously great visuals and production value, it doesn't feel like it's your hobby so it's got less efforts than you put in your filmmaking career. Your UA-cam videos are just as great in quality as your films.
This is the best video the UA-cam algorithm has served up to me in a good, long time. Keep it up Mark. Such simple truths, yet so many are obsessed with getting the “cinematic look” over story.
Mark is the truth. Been following him for a minute. You should also check out Danny Gervitz and Zach Ramelan if you havent. I started watching them all around the same time. Big Big Help!!!
Been looking for the concepts you just shared for a year now. You know what the viewing public is looking for. Another reason your channel is so valuable. Thanks Mark.
Great advice. These steps are explained in some story arc videos but why it’s important and how it’s done are often not explained nearly as well. Thank you for sharing this.
Omg finally somebody that shares a good advice!!! So many youtubers “filmmakers” only trying to sell you stuff and how “cinematic” looks and totally forget about the basic of filmmaking Subscribed!!
Thank you so much, I recently found your channel and it is videos like this that separate your content from everyone else. I feel so great full to live in a time where I can learn so much over the internet. Keep it up!
I'm glad that I stumbled across this video. This the route that I've taken with my career and I'm going to work on shooting my 1st documentary about a young entrepreneur and her nail shop. I knw it sound uninteresting but I really want to tell her story and get this experience under my belt. I start tomorrow! Thx ya for this 🙏🏾
Always, MB is the best at not focusing on the gear but what's actually important: making people invested in the film with story and character and theme.
Finally, someone who talks about what’s important in doc. I’m currently in development for a doc and every video on it is mentioning: - camera and lighting - editing - where to interview All of which matter, but not when you haven’t even got a story yet! Seriously… location for interviews is probably the least important aspect of doc film.
Always stoked if I get a notification from your new upload! Always a dope video! I am in the final stages of a doc I have been working on the past 1,5 year. I think I am guilty aswel 😅 on aimless shooting but mostly because there are so many awesome things happening 😅 affraid to miss out I guess 😜 keep up the awesome work! Looking forward to the next one and the course!
Mark, this is pure awesomeness. I’m new here, just saw the thumbnail and clicked and now I’m one of your supporters, cause yes, cause I love this! Great video man. Looking forward to seeing much more from you. Big thank you. Stay well and safe
thanks a lot for these tips Mark, it opens my mind to a lot of possibility in film making, especially short films. Thanks again. I could not cerntainly afford the masterclass because I live in one of the poorest country in the world (Madagascar), but these tips already give me enough for creating something new and better than I had never done before.
I went to film school for my MFA and I got a lot of theory but not a lot of hands on experience. However for our thesis we shot a documentary about the political issues in Puerto Rico and used theory and in our own way, but also gorilla filmmaking tactics to make it happen. We have now been accepted into two film festivals and we're awarded with a Telly award. I do wish these "institutions" would get into the nitty gritty like you are. I love the content you are pushing out and can't wait to see what this master class is all about. To growth! cheers
Really looking forward to your documentary class! So much motivation and ideas boiling inside of me but want to channel it properly-thanks for these videos!
Mark, Thanks so much for the content. Really enjoy your approach and I'm looking forward to the documentary course. Keep the long hair bruv its illmatic! - cheers
Thank you so much for what you are doing with this channel, I find this information is helping me tremendously in my beginnings of filmmaking. I went to film school, but it's been years, and now I'm getting back into true filmmaking, modern filmmaking. these are great beginner, and or refresher courses, in a way:)
Really appreciate this assertive story telling. I am fast becoming bored with beautiful videos that don't have a story to tell (hehehe, orange and teal)
These are some solid tips, and is well organized. Something I wish was shared more on UA-cam or better yet, I wish more films and stories were told on here, but it also might not be the place for that.
Hey Mark I really enjoy your channel! I think you bring up some value points. Can’t wait to try the assertive documentary style for the next project. Keep up the great work. 🤙🏽
Thanks so much for this one man. Something I feel I needed to watch. Planning a short film about a friend of mine competing in the world latte art championships and some of these concepts will definitely apply and help me. Cheers! Ben.
Hi Mark i have 15 years filmming Whales and wildlife in Peninsula Valdes, Patagonia Argentina. have a ton of footage that i sell in stock market but always wish to make my own documentary... this video give me one more push to that dream, hope i can learn from you and obviusly i will love to join your course as soon as i can! hope to see more content like this on the channel, thank you very much for sharing yor knowledge! you have a new suscriber here! keep going!!!
Mark! Thank you so much for such great content man. I'm in the process of finishing my first serious documentary ever, and I'm so psiched to see that I actually were taking care of these main principles ... it has been a crazy summer with myself battling with this process, but so rewarding in the end. Hope I can get into that course! All the best and keep it up!
This is amazing, thank you so much for the tips and inspiration. Im working on my first film, its not a doc but i am going to try and use these tips to strengthen my film. Thanks again.
OMG I’ve learned so much in this 7:20 minute video. I just came across this by accident but it really put everything into perspective for me. I’ve been shoot random footage and editing them together hoping for something beautiful. Yesterday I wrote a script for a GMC commercial went out and shot it and, it was amazing. It was amazing because I knew exactly what I wanted to convey to the viewers. Dispute the fact the shoot got rained out I was able to get some decent footage. I’m a subscriber now thanks . Its interesting that your observing so many directionless shooting style...I figured the first thing you need in any doc is a good story and then you use the shots to help tell that story, but I guess it's a big problem. Perhaps we have a generation of filmakers who are starting by learning the flamer gear over learning story telling techniques first.
You have no idea how much I needed this!
Totally agree man, a lot of people on youtube forget about story and meaning when making videos. There is a lot more to filmmaking than fast paced transitions and crazy luts.
Kez I’ve seen a few of your ‘useful’ comments around.

Love that video Mark. Less gear and tricks, but more storytelling. Aimless < Assertive Thanks for vid and more of that, please! 👍
I'm in😊

We fully agree!
This is the best video the UA-cam algorithm has served up to me in a good, long time. Keep it up Mark. Such simple truths, yet so many are obsessed with getting the “cinematic look” over story.
Thank you UA-cam!!!
You're videos are practically the only ones I watch repeatedly. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion!
4 hours ago I was sitting there thinking “man I need to go rewatch Mark Bone’s documentary videos after work” and at that moment you dropped this. 💣💣💣
LETS GOOOOO !! Just found your channel like 2 days ago and bruhhh it’s already helped me so much in filming 🥺🥺🖤 Thankyou !!!

I just started watching your channel about 2 weeks ago and I have to say I've been super blessed by your work.
Every so often I come back to watch this video to remind myself of a few things.
Thanks mark for the great content.
I really love how you get in depth with the art of storytelling instead of those ones who just stitch footages with crazy transitions. Salute Mark!😊👍

Really needed the clarification of assertive vs aimless, I have been feeling the later, aimless for quite some time. Thanks for the great tips, Mark!
I liked video as the ad was playing... I already know it won't disappoint. Thank you for everything you've shared! To M from M
These are really the truth of storytelling. Very helpful for filmmakers who just start their attempts in documentary. subbed!
Always, MB is the best at not focusing on the gear but what's actually important: making people invested in the film with story and character and theme.
You give some really great advice! Thanks for creating this!
Two minutes in and I subbed. As a filmmaker who wants to start getting into documentary films, I love this content. Please keep it going!

Wow. Very informative contents. Thank you so much.
Totally agree! So many beautifully shot but empty videos being made that have no grit or story, so much emphasis on equipment, style, 'cinematicness'😁
0:15 love this cropped part!
Best video ever Mark!! I have watched it 3 times in a row. My wife doesnt allow me a 4 time now haha. Thanks for the tips
Early bird signed up! Let’s goo. This is the next level shit we’re looking for.
