I've watched a few of your videos (maybe original BMPCC days) and noted a general preference for a particular colour cast (light magenta?) which I chalked down to your grading. I skimmed through one of your recent Antarctica videos to re-check and can see the grade there as well (neutralized by the cooler light a bit) . The Zeiss glass organically leans towards a warmer look so there is a possibility of compounding the warm effect.... but you appear not to have compensated. Again, preference, but your sunsets seem affected by the compounding the most... appears a bit contrived. However, love your work and dedication... and for showcasing Sydney. Keep up the good stuff ! Thanks
I bought a 135,2.8 this week, tested it out yesterday. As someone who has owned the Nikon and Canon FD version. The zeiss beats them both hands down. I am looking to complete the set. CARL ZEISS FOREVER!
Since I really wanted to avoid using speedboosters on my Pocket 4K, I went with the 0.95 Voigtlanders. They are, in my opinion, the most cinematic glass you can get from this new era of lenses, on any Blackmagic camera. Currently I own the 10.5mm, 17.5mm and 42.5mm and actually have no need now to get any more. To me, this set with BMPCC4K is the best what I could have now, and in the future.
@@mazurindependentfilmmaking2713 Totally agree, now these days the sensors are getting bigger and bigger and yes Minoltas, Nikons and Carl Zeiss Jena are just amazing, I love the colours on the Carl Zeiss Jena, warm and saturated.
@@OfTwoLands Its great. The 18 is nice when you need slightly wider on a super35 cam, but when adding to a FF camera that has IBIS, you start to see vignetting with an 80mm front on the lens.
If you didn't already get the primes I'd tell you to get CZ 35-70 3.4. Primes in one lens they say. Little slow on the aperture though but great CZ lens.
@@LucaBono.Studio I never really tested the lens for that exactly but I never noticed too heavy vignetting. I can do some test on both things and let you know.
It isn’t quite fair if the FDs you are comparing are the bottom line sets (24 f/2.8 and 50 f/1.8). If someone does want to go the FD Route they should definitely seek out the middle line (24/28/35 f/2.0; 50 f/1.4 etc.) as they have a much better build. However the Zeiss are outstanding-I used them on my first feature with a Red Epic-MX and loved the look. Great video! Thanks :)

Got my first vintage lens thanks to you, it was 25mm f2.8 mmj from Japan, I'm using an ebay adapter for now till I get to put either leitax or simmod for a stronger mount. if anyone is considering buying note there's extra import fees to pay (about 20% the cost), in case you need to return you can't have those refunded easily. On the Viltrox to EF they fit perfectly, on Metabones Ultra they cause a slight scratch to the velvet side inside, on both speedboosters I had to adjust them to get infinity focus "by rotating the inner glass". but I guess if use them on native EF camera you won't have this issue. I learned so much already in just a week, this kinda added motivation to go out and shoot in these depressing lockdown times. Thanks :)
Thanks for another great video. Look forward to the 2,8/35mm Distagon. That's my favorite 35mm. It makes such beautiful pictures. The Sonnar 135mm is pretty sharp and got the lovely Sonnar bokeh (and works perfectly with the Mutar 2 - 2x teleconverter which is often possible to buy at a favourable price -if something really long is needed :).
I use CZ rollei lenses and found rendering of tele-tessar 135 f4 is much better compared to 135 2.8 sonnar. Just feeling - f4 is more "3dish" and "deeper".

I have the 25mm 2.8 Carl Zeiss.. My concern is what you mentioned about CA and as far as I know there is no plug-in for video that eliminates CA in video? For photos there is, but for video I do not know of a solution...?
I completely understand, I use zoom lenses most of the time. More practical and less 'risky'. I do love owning this kit though and it feels so good to be shooting some projects on them. Always handy to have a set of primes too :).

Hi, thanks a lot for this video, i will dig a bit in that direction. Have you been able to compare them with some Leica R lenses ? I think the Contax Zeiss are a good balance between FD and Leica R..
Thanks for watching !! I haven't had the chance to compare with the Leica unfortunately but I knew from the start that I couldn't really afford them anyway haha. And I agree, the Contax sit perfectly between the FD and R.
The Leica R lens has a very smooth look which makes everything look nicer, and is very sharp, I got the 28mm Elmarit -which means F:2,8 and the 50mm and 90mm Summicron -which means F:2 -Two and Three-cam (means year). But I Use my Zeiss C/Y lenses much more. They make a more bluntly look. Especial the Planar and Distagons got a very fine 3D rendering -(called "the Zeis pop"), The Sonnars on the other hand got very fine shades, if not up-sharpned to much, which gives a pronounced plasticity -very good for faces. Both the Leica and Zeiss got beautiful rich colors. For me it looks like the Canon FDs have less contrast and a more flat look and not as clean saturated colors (I sold mine).
Hah! $2000 is actually a bargain for these lenses nowadays... I guess you have to be very patient. I have almost the same set but from the East... :) The Jenas are quirky little tanks. I am waiting for getting those back from servicing and I intend to make a comparison between them and brand new Zeiss Cinema glass. Old vs New, East vs West... as it is always the case haha! @@OfTwoLands @Of Two Lands Oh, yeah the Olympus OM Zuiko series primes are definitely vintage and almost as good as their Leica equivalents. Much the same with Pentax-M; frankly Leica and Contax lovers just have too much money. I have tested over 150 lenses in the past 4 years (I resell film cameras locally)... The so-called premium brands aren't noticeably better, especially through the bottleneck of instagram. They don't justify the price when you can sell one and buy an entire set of primes from Olympus, Konica, Nikon, Canon, or Pentax. Both the Pentax-M 28/2.8 and 35/2.8 are very underrated lenses, if you shoot film the Pentax-M 40/2.8 pancake is without competition. Anyone who wants to disrespect Pentax glass obviously hasn't tried their M-Series on a mirrorless camera or film camera, nor have they tried their best glass (such as the Pentax-M 28mm 2.0 for example). The 28/2.0 is literally as good as any 28mm ever manufactured, I am lucky to have found one as they are quite rare. The Konica Minolta glass is also tremendously undervalued-- their 40/1.8 pancake almost never leaves my Fuji X-T3. Their final manual focus versions (the Konica AR series) can get excruciatingly expensive but some of them are readily available under $100 and are well worth the price. Konica made a 28mm 1.8 that sells for $1500-$2000 regularly; is it worth it? Not a chance.

After watching this I am unsure if Ziess is the way I'd want to go. I love everything except for me if like to lean more into to flare and other imperfections that come with vintage glass. The FD lenses may be an option though I think the Nikon's may be my middle ground. As they tend to be of good construction and have a good focus throw.
How do you avoid chromatic aberrations and what kind of nd filters are you using so you don't downgrade the quality of the glass. Thanks for the tips and the video
You can step down apperture. But a bit of chromatic aberration is totaly okay to the public eye. I've never seen anyone complaining about it, quite the contrary to be honest! I've heard from my girlfriend "oh i love when the color speels on the borders" For variable Nd, Nisi are pretty good and not too expensive.
@@OfTwoLands okay thanks. I ordered the 50mm and the 85mm but the website I ordered them from said they were Nikon F mounts. Are there different versions with different mounts?
Hey Flo, thanks for the video's. Was looking into the Contax Zeiss or the Leica R. The Leica R is more expensive than the Contax Zeiss glass but seems to have a bit more character. Did you considered the Leica's?
@@OfTwoLands Thanks! Probably good for documentaries. If you can be consistent, otherwise it's a bit all over the place. I filmed with a documentary with Zeiss CP2 lens. Think the Contax Zeiss will be a bit the same. The Contax Zeiss will be easier to match.
Are these the same lenses from the Contax G series? I only have 2 new digital lenses (from Fuji), other than that I only shoot vintage lenses on my analog cameras 🥰
Another question. I see a lot of people declicking their aperture. I have Canon Fds on Sony A7iii. I never needed the aperture to be smooth. Do you find a need of decklicking it? other than changing the exposure when filming a continuous shot from dark to bright and vice versa?
I actually talk about this in the video. I don't really feel the need to and I think it has its pros and cons. I kinda like to know exactly what aperture i'm on but it sure can be handy to quickly change on the go whilst recording.
Thanks a lot !! All custom, I don't use LUTS. For the reviews it is pretty basic, just using FCPX and tweak curves and saturation mostly. For proper work I use both filmconvert and FCPX.
hello, amazing vid ! question : we are ok, it is impossible to adapt Canon FD lenses on the pocket 6K ? i know it is possible on the 4k, but i'm not sure for the 6k
On Ebay now the Zeiss that you show in this video are at the same price as new Meike cine lenses, more or less 50 bucks, so I'm wondering if those Zeiss are worth it now?
The Zeiss are still worth it as they also cover full frames sensors :). And they have a specific look and feel to them so it depends what you need them for I guess.
There aren't any right now on Ebay, certainly not that 28mm, unless I'm willing to get it from Japan, which I'm not. I'd rather have it shipped from the US
They look incredible! I'd love to find good zeiss contax but I'm afraid of ebay since most of the lenses that are available there are in Japan and I'm in Venezuela so returning them might not be an option. I own many Canon FD but I cannot use them on my BMPCC6K because of the adapter, I have a Fotodiox FD to EF adapter but I cannot focus to infinity, which adapter do you use for your FD's?

Salut Flo!
Cheers
Hey, that's a solid vintage set you got there. I was wondering for the mod part, do you change the lens aperture during your filming ? If you do, how do you maintain the same exposure during filming? I was wondering, is it really worth to declick the aperture?
Thanks !! I actually don't unless I absolutely have too (documentary work). In my opinion it isn't worth is to declick but it really depends of the work you do.

Hey Flo! Love the content - I'm a photographer/filmmaker using the bmpcc4k (bought before the 6k was announced and have yet to switchover). I have a full set of Sigma Art lenses (24-70 and 70-200 zooms and 24, 35, 50, 85 Primes), as well as a few Canon L lenses, but I'm wondering if I'm getting too caught up in the appeal of vintage lenses or if there really is a big benefit to some zeiss glass in my life. Thoughts?
Hey, the main reason was the cost of course but also because the ones that I got (sometimes dubbed as the gimbal kit) are pretty much all the same size and weight which a huge advantage in some cases. Vintage lenses are great for certain projects. I only use mine for specific work or when I have the time to use them on set as well. I still use my canon and sigma zooms a lot especially for documentary work. In my opinion having vintage primes is great for commercial work, passion projects and also as investment.

I think I plan to follow your method to a degree of using vintage when the circumstances call for it, but have the option to use the sigma art when I need a more clean/professional and neutral look.
Do you have some rotation between the lens and body when using an adapter and pulling focus? How do you deal with it? Does the Leitax mount have the same rotation on the camera mount issues?
The Leitax is rock solid like standard EF. With the adapters I used to have an issue with my first 18mm because the focus ring was too stiff. Now it's all good :). I get the occasional wobble but it's super minimal.
Question about the adapters. I currently own the K&F concept EF one. There is quite a bit of play when I use that adapter in combination with the Metabones Speedbooster XL. Did you ever have problems with this? And is there a noticeable difference with the Fotodiox pro one? (Especially considering the amount of play). Thanks!
There is a bit of play with the K&F (although I never use a Speedbooster). And yes the Fotodiox Pro are better in my opinion. They both work but the Fotodiox is slightly above in terms of quality :).

I love how you present these using your past work. This gives us additional BTS to those works. Thank you!
Glad you do, thank you :) !!
Great video Flo! Thanks for sharing. The lenses look great. Been thinking of picking up a set of vintage lenses myself.
Thanks for watching man !! Would you go Contax or Leica or FD haha ?
Start with Russian trinity!Functional, cheap and loaded with character ;)
Since I really wanted to avoid using speedboosters on my Pocket 4K, I went with the 0.95 Voigtlanders. They are, in my opinion, the most cinematic glass you can get from this new era of lenses, on any Blackmagic camera. Currently I own the 10.5mm, 17.5mm and 42.5mm and actually have no need now to get any more. To me, this set with BMPCC4K is the best what I could have now, and in the future.
I believe you for sure, I almost got the 17.5mm years ago for the OG pocket, such a beautiful lens !!
FF lenses are far more future proof thats why im afraid to invest m43.
I think fast nikkors and minotas are quite cinematic boosted.
@@mazurindependentfilmmaking2713 Totally agree, now these days the sensors are getting bigger and bigger and yes Minoltas, Nikons and Carl Zeiss Jena are just amazing, I love the colours on the Carl Zeiss Jena, warm and saturated.
I have the 18/4, 21/2.8, 28/2.0, 35/1.4, 50/1.4, 85/1.4 all cinemoded. Contax Zeiss are great.
Nice !! How superior is the 21 comparing to the 18 and why did you decide to keep both ?
@@OfTwoLands Its great. The 18 is nice when you need slightly wider on a super35 cam, but when adding to a FF camera that has IBIS, you start to see vignetting with an 80mm front on the lens.
Is the field of illumination that better on the 28mm F2 compared to the f2.8? I'm thinking to replace my f2.8 lens...
If you didn't already get the primes I'd tell you to get CZ 35-70 3.4. Primes in one lens they say. Little slow on the aperture though but great CZ lens.
Yeah I heard so many good things about that zoom !!
How's the bokeh in the corners? Is it suffering from heavy vignetting?
@@LucaBono.Studio I never really tested the lens for that exactly but I never noticed too heavy vignetting. I can do some test on both things and let you know.
@@vladimirsoic4429 it will be amazing if you can do it! Thanks mate!
Thanks :)
Thanks for watching !! I agree with what you're saying, but these were the ones I had filmed with so wanted with something I knew. I do have the 50 1.4 now :).
The problem on the Canon FD lenses is the blue...the sky is always washed out. For the rest they're lovely lenses!

@@OfTwoLands With my camera, crop sensor, used the 35mm more times. The 85mm is the lenses that I use less times, but I bought the lenses with FF sensor in mind, will made the switch soon.
Thanks :)
A dream kit, thanks for these useful advice!
Thanks for watching :) !!
Have you considered mamiya sekor c m645?
Thanks for another great video. Look forward to the 2,8/35mm Distagon. That's my favorite 35mm. It makes such beautiful pictures. The Sonnar 135mm is pretty sharp and got the lovely Sonnar bokeh (and works perfectly with the Mutar 2 - 2x teleconverter which is often possible to buy at a favourable price -if something really long is needed :).
Thanks !! I think I will get the 35mm at some point too :). 135mm not too sure as I don't use the 85 as much as I thought either.
I use CZ rollei lenses and found rendering of tele-tessar 135 f4 is much better compared to 135 2.8 sonnar. Just feeling - f4 is more "3dish" and "deeper".
I have several Carl Zeiss lenses, prestige Takumars too, but always seem to go to my zoom modern lenses for some reason. I know, maybe stupid, but most are paid projects and feel I may regret using the vintage lenses...🤷🏼 going to try and do some personal smaller projects to really “test” them..

Could I use them on BMPCC 4K?
@@OfTwoLands Can you mount Canon FD on Canon EF mount? I thought their flange distance is too short?

Other than a bit of movement, it's no issue
Hah! $2000 is actually a bargain for these lenses nowadays... I guess you have to be very patient. I have almost the same set but from the East... :) The Jenas are quirky little tanks. Nothing beats the Pentax-M lenses for the price. The Olympus Zuiko aren't bad either.
Why are the Pentax M better do you think ?
The Zuiko aren’t vintage lenses though.

I've heard from my girlfriend "oh i love when the color speels on the borders"
For variable Nd, Nisi are pretty good and not too expensive.

The 50 and 85 are CY mounts with an adapter (listed) :)
Hey, thanks for watching !! I did consider them but they were too pricey and harder to find. It does seem that they do have more character though.
The Leica R have strong flares while the Contax Zeiss lenses are controlling them better...it depends from the DoP what's ideal.
Thank you for the video! Was wondering what is the crop factor when used with the bmpcc 6k? Thanks!
Thanks for watching!! With the 6K it depends on the resolution and codec you shoot at, but mostly it's around x1.55 - 1.6 :)
Hello! Lovely. Are these CY mount or MMj ? any reason why?
Are these the same lenses from the Contax G series? I only have 2 new digital lenses (from Fuji), other than that I only shoot vintage lenses on my analog cameras 🥰
No, the standard Contax Zeiss :). I love Fuji lenses too.
What focus gears did you get for your set?
Just realised I didn't mention it. Got them on ebay super cheap like $4 haha.
Are they any good for photography?
I’d say so yes since they were built for that purpose :).
Naaa you don't need to declick the canon FD...the adapter can control the blades of the lens.
Why didn't you add a macro lens to the lens set?
Because I pretty much never shoot macro.
Do you still keep your pocket 4k?
A friend of mine has it :).
How much colour correction do you do in your videos? Do you just use luts or is it custom? All your videos look fantastic.
Thanks !! I think you can with a few adapters and / or conversion kits but I’ve never used them on the 6K.
You need to change the lens mount for EF cameras.
@@OfTwoLands They cover full frames sensors, I guess just this makes them worth it. I totally forgot that "detail".

Salut Flo!
Je pars à la chasse pour un kit similaire et j’ai une question pour toi: est-ce facile de monter une mattbox sur ces optiques? J’ai vu que certaines zeiss vintage, le focus se fait par un système de « zoom » optique qui allonge l’objo.

When you "mod" these, are you still able to use them for still photography or does modding it sacrifice some things?
You could yes, I just don't. I don't think there is a different in using them for stills or videos :).
I bought the adapter on your link , but doesn't work with my speed booster for my pocket 4k. Any work arounds? It does work with my 6k
No sorry, I haven't used it when Speedboosters, only with native mounts.
@@OfTwoLands you don't use with your 4k?
All my contax zeiss lenses have a yellowish tint to them, is that normal?
Hmm, I’m not sure I have experience this. Which camera are you using ?
@@OfTwoLands Im using a fujifilm x-t2 but just got an eos r. I get where you're going tho, I'll test them on my eosr it might be some settings i changed on the xt2. Thanks.
Golden tint is common with radioactive glass.
So is your adapter a speed booster? I'm trying to work out the effective focal range of the 28mm on the super 35.
No, it is just a regular adapter. The crop is what you have your bmpcc set to so usually 1.5 or 1.6 :). The 28mm works out to be around 42-44mm.
@@OfTwoLands What adapters are there for Contax Zeiss to BMPC 6K?
Hi is there a way I can email you to ask about these lenses, I'm a beginner photographer
What budget friendly cameras can they be mounted on, and would you suggest the 28 mm 2.8 for portrait shots/product photos/commercial shooting? Thanks for this presentation
Didi You mension what focusing gear rings are You using? I have several Milvus lenses for video work and I like them with Zeiss own focusing rings. Btw. have You tried the Vario-Sonnar 100-300? I cannot rest until I try it..
I use cheap ring I found on ebay, they work very well. And no, I haven't tried the 100-300, I generally do not shoot a lot of content past 100 unless it is doco work and in that case I use my Canon lenses.
Hi, After watching your review I recently got contax zeiss 50mm f1.7 what i noticed is its filter thread is mentioned 55mm diameter on various websites. When I put a 55mm to 77mm step-up ring to use filters it doesn't fit (Small). I also tried 58mm to 77mm which is slightly bigger. Can you help me with the exact diameter of filter thread as you have installed it already? Where can I buy these steup rings you are using?
Thank you
Sydney Australia is a truly beautiful city isn't it?
Really is :) !!
all mmj?
Yes :)
Beautiful lenses. Currently deciding between the 28mm 2.8 vs 2. Pretty big price difference. Have you ever wished you went with the 2 over the 2.8?
They really are :). I love my 28mm 2.8 and never wished I had F2 honestly. I would rather invest in another focal length for example.
Depends how you use a 28. For me it’s up close, available light. F2 all day.
Did you try the 28mm Zeiss on the 4k or you got them after switching to 6k? Just wondering about the difference in crop factor if the 28mm would be too tight on the 4k?
Only for the 6K. I have the Canon FDs for the 4K :).
@@OfTwoLands Thanks, when the weather gets better I'll experiment with my Sigma 18-35mm which focal length I use the most :-)
How do you like the 85mm 2.8? Have you ever wished that you had the 1.4? I’m debating between the two. Do you find that the 85 Sonar and the 50 planar have a different look?
Great video man, how did you build the set up filter ring for the 18mm?
Thanks man !! Just ordered an old Contax filter thread to snap on the end of the lens, and then used a step down ring (86-77 I think) in order to use regular 77mm filters. Not perfect but it does the job :).
@@OfTwoLands thank you man, I just ordered all four :-D I really like how organic they look... I will get in touch if I have any questions, if it's ok :-)
@@OfTwoLands What kind of adapter do you use for the 18mm?
One of the best videos on these beautiful lenses. Well done man on the pros/cons + alternatives. Currently building a Canon nFD set. My biggest hesitation in the Zeiss is the CA. Curious why the 85/2.8 vs 85/1.4 guessing size?
Thanks so much !! There is a bit of CA yes, unfortunately. I wanted all lenses to have the same size so I went for the 2.8 :)
Nice lenses!
They really are!!
Hey Flo! Love the content - I'm a photographer/filmmaker using the bmpcc4k (bought before the 6k was announced and have yet to switchover). I wanted to ask if there was a reason outside of cost that you went with the 2.8 lenses versus the 1.4 versions of some of these focal lengths?
@@OfTwoLands Thanks so much! I just took the plunge and got my first lens! I went all out and got the Contax Zeiss 21mm 2.8 MMJ in mint condition. I know it is one of the hardest to find and I know it'll only get harder so I wanted to knock that one off my dream list first! I think I plan to follow your method to a degree of using vintage when the circumstances call for it, but have the option to use the sigma art when I need a more clean/professional and neutral look.
@@nathan-lewis Hello! Did you grab your set? Is it fast, are u happy with lens set compared to cleaner sigmas?
Do you have some rotation between the lens and body when using an adapter and pulling focus? How do you deal with it? Does the Leitax mount have the same rotation on the camera mount issues?
The Leitax is rock solid like standard EF. With the adapters I used to have an issue with my first 18mm because the focus ring was too stiff. Now it's all good :). I get the occasional wobble but it's super minimal.
Hi, I have a question~ When you use 77mm filters on the 18mm f4, is there any vignetting?
Hey, no :).
@@OfTwoLands That's great!
Same problem here
@@joaquinmunozserrano3624 do you use it in combination with a speedbooster? Most of my contax lenses don't seem to be able to reach infinity when shooting wide open with this combination...
@@tijmenbrouwers I haven't paid attention to this honestly, sorry.
@@tijmenbrouwers Adapters are a problem. The flange focal distance is 45.5mm for the Canon EF and 44mm for the Yashica-Contax bayonet. The difference is only 1.5mm and that's a problem, it's too small a distance, it's a technical problem !!! I did not find a good C / Y adapter for EF on the market and therefore I adjusted the lens. Now I can sharpen infinity.
The BMPCC 6K has a crop factor of about 1.56x, does this bother you at all considering you can’t go exactly the focal length that you got?
I have always shot on S35 sensors (C100, C200, Ursa etc) so this doesn't bother me at all :). Only recently cameras changed to FF.
@@OfTwoLands haha totally get you. Thank you for the reply! Love ur work 😃
Also, I have a set of Contax Zeiss, (28,50,85) and I use a fotodiox ef adapter, but mine wiggles on my bmpcc 4K a little bit, does your adapters do the same?
@@renzosunga646 do you use the pro version? And do you use it in combination with a speedbooster? I’m currently using a k&f concept c/y to ef together with a Speedbooster XL 0,64. I am having problems with it having play as well as problems with reaching true infinity focus when shooting wide open (F1.4). Would love to hear what your setup is and if you also have problems reaching infinity focus.
@@tijmenbrouwersI just use the normal versions of the CY to EOS mount. I actually found that the fotodiox adapter is really loose on my 85, so I ordered another brand called Haoge and that one fits like a snug, and for my 28mm, I am using a brand called Oumij:
www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07WCFLW1C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1&fpw=alm
For some reason, the lens mounts are not all the same fit unfortunately.
As for my lenses, I own the 50 1.7, but I don't have any problems with reaching infinity focus. It might be a problem with your actual lens maybe?
My current set up is:
Speedbooster 0.71x ------ to CY/EOS ----- Contax Zeiss
Hi, could I ask how the focus ring on the 18mm compares to your other contax lenses? I've just received my 18mm but the focus ring feels loose compared to my 28mm and 85mm. Just weighing up if I need to send it off for a repair. Many thanks
My first 18mm was so stiff I had to send it back. This one is the same as my other Contax. I think it depends on lens you get. Have you tried another one ?
