Here is a cinematography breakdown of our latest surf documentary shot with the BMPCC6K. Hope you enjoy this type of video and let me know if you need to know anything else about this shoot :). Cheers, Flo
I'm always impressed with your skill as an operator! You're able to transform handheld into smooth, beautiful footage that floats perfectly with just the right amount of movement.
Looks really good. I agree I love the dark car shots such a nice look and sets a mood as well the street light pop. The hand held bmpcc6k footage looks great. Good work!
Well done on creating such a fantastic documentary. The images you captured are truly beautiful and you successfully told his story in an intimate and personal way. I absolutely loved it. If you don't mind, I have a few questions. What types of questions did you ask to make his dialogue so natural and free-flowing? Did you tell him what topics to talk about? How much planning was put into it? Was the whole thing based on his dialogue or did you already have an idea of the narrative you wanted to achieve? How long did it take to film the whole thing? Was it all filmed in one day or multiple? How much direction did you put into it? Were you telling him what to do/where to go or did you just follow him around to make it as natural as possible? Thanks, Toby
Thank you so much for the nice feedback and interest !! - We had about 10 questions that mostly revolved around When Why What. Very basic ones to prompt convo. - We planned some shots and the time of day to film since we also had 1.5 days to shoot. We knew we wanted to focus on why he stills surfs after so many years, what it makes him feel and how it affects his life for better or worse on a daily basis. - We shot over 2 days but mostly one afternoon and one morning. This was done on the weekend. I wanted both sunset and sunrise options, with a bit filmed at home. - I only directed him twice, in order to re frame a shot, the rest was just about following him around. I wanted to capture a typical weekend :). Hope this helps. Cheers and thanks for watching !!
This is great! Thanks for taking the time to breakdown your surf doc. I really enjoyed the film and this was an amazing insight into your approach and creative decision making. Please consider doing more of these companion videos. Nice work on both of them. Cheers!
Really enjoyed watching this, and learned a LOT. The documentary was beautifully composed, so to see the thoughts and processes behind it was very inspiring.
Beautifull story and cinematography ! Very happy to discover another side of your work and another way of telling stories. You can't buy waves, so true, climax to the doc for me. I love the the secret spot in the rocks but i am too affraid with sharks... :) I will rather stay in the Basque country. Thumb up for the breakdown series too ! I have some questions, how do you approach movement with non stabilized lenses (handheld assumed), how would you white balance with nd filters that produce green cast, don't you don't you ever need a viewfinder, finding focus on a monitor isn't always easy with reflections and bright conditions. I am gessing how to complete my rig, with a monitor and maybe a viewfinder (smallhd focus 5 + lcdvm bm5). Thanks in advance. Un grand bravo à l'équipe Of Two Lands qui nous réjouissent à chaque vidéo.
Thanks so much for positive feedback, means a lot :) !! For handheld work I usually follow the movement if there is any, and if not I just lock my elbows in and control my breathing. I find focusing with my 7 inch monitor quite easy, and even when I don't use a monitor the bmpcc6k screen is quite nice and with peaking it's usually fine for me. Regarding white balance I do not make adjustments depending on the filters I am using. You could adjust the tint though but I think I would just fix in post or try to control the glares. Hope this helps :). Encore merci !!
awesome work, well done. The pocket is a beast of a camera. I have documentary ideas I can't wait to do once we are out of this lockdown we are in in Scotland. I have much to learn and getting out there will be the best way for me to practice. Great breakdown 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿.
Just found your channel and wanted to say: Thank you so much for your unique contect!! I can really see the time you invest into this. I really appreciate your work! Keep it up man, you definately got one new fanboy here! :)
@@OfTwoLands great minds think a like. I can’t tell you how many times i have thought of doing something and then seeing somebody do it before me! Love your content and style! Keep it up!
Thank you, I found this very interesting. I use to have the original BMPC, but found managing the power supply & using a Meterbones adaptor was all too much hassle.. I'm currently carrying out some research into having another go, but this time using the BMP 6k and my EF lenses... This time I would skip using Resolve as I could not really learn how to use nodes.... I have subscribed to see what else I can learn.....
Great work, loved the mood of this film! Was interesting to see/hear the choices you make while shooting and understand your thinking behind certain scenes e.tc. Despite new cameras like the c70, c300 mkiii and Sony’s I still can’t find a reason to stop using the bmpcc6k as an A-cam either, you can get such amazing footage out of it as you constantly show on your channel! Hope your enjoying the alps :)
Just found your channel. Really loving your presentation style and the content is beautiful. I thought I could hear a slight 'modification' to your accent. Brisbane viewer here. Keep up the amazing work. Inspiring
This was incredible and super inspiring! I love the way you think about your shots and what goes in them. Just a question - With the BMPCC6K and having long shoot days for this, was battery ever a concern?
Thanks so much man !! I used the Core SWX powerbase battery for this so I would get 2.5hrs per charge and for the interview I plugged the camera in :).
4:30 i don't use anymore 70-200 F4L IS for filming just because following focus is too inaccurate. This is a good optics, but short focus travel ring + non mecanical ring + small aperture.... too bad to focusing subjet moving.

Thanks for sharing the process & rationale! Beautifully framed and explained.
@@JosephMcBrayer Thanks for watching man, appreciate the support :).
Great video and super helpful! How do you go about finding the subjects and stories to capture? I’m new to this. Still learning. Thanks!
You get 5 stars for handheld alone. The BMPCCs are so unforgiving when it comes to camera shake. You did great with it.
Haha thanks so much !! Lots of practice 😅

Love the breakdown man. One of my favourite doccos from you yet!
Thanks so much mate !! 👊
Great review ! Could have summed up a couple of comments, but fast forwarded at 1.5 it was still very helpful
Haha thanks !!
Great work! Love hearing your thoughts about how you made this passion project. Wonderful insights into a filmmaker's love for telling a story.

Cool man, thank you for this type of content. Appreciate it.
Thanks for watching man !!
yes yes yes! Been waiting for this one!
P.S. Did you stop using your BMPCC4K?
Thanks !! Hope you like it :)
And yes, I switch to the 6K fully, much easier for my workflow and since I also own the Eos R I can share lenses too. I miss the 4K a lot though haha.
@@OfTwoLands why is better for your workflow? And why do you miss the 4K?

Great video(s). I especially like the shot of the car under the streetlight at their home.
Thanks :) !!

Excellent. Love these BTF (Behind the film) breakdowns. Did you handhold the car shots as well?
Thanks , glad you do :) !! Yes, everything was handheld, except the interview.
@@OfTwoLands Wow. Built in gimbal in your wrists 😁
Hahaha, I always shoot handheld so lots of practice 😬 !!
Learned a ton. Thanks so much for this video :)
Glad you did, thank you for watching !!
Your handheld skill is awesome. How long have you been into filmmaking?
Nice one flo, enjoyed watching
Thanks man, how have you been ?!
@@OfTwoLands Thankyou! I have been well, working enough etc. This format of your videos is good you should do some more in the future.

Yes it does. This doco was shot in 4k (uhd)

It is a bit hard to use I understand your point.
What do you mean "expose for the wave" or exposing for something specific?
Exposing for the waves, so meaning exposing for the brighter part of the image :).
Hi, in what resolution did you posted this documentary on youtube? Thanks!
Hi, the doco was in 4K but with a 2.4:1 ratio :)
Wow, that was quick. Thanks for inspirations!

you should be at 200k not 20 lol, some of the best sunrise footage ive seen
Haha thanks maybe one day :) !!
Might of missed it but you shoot in 3:1, Q0, or something else?
Prores 422 :)
@@OfTwoLands thanks
id add some drone shots!
How many FPS for slow motion? Did you shoot it at 120fps at 2k?
4K 60 and 120 2.8k :).
The light is way too flat, no shapes no depth during the interview scenes...
