Sounds to me like they were the luckiest ship in the war, they repeatedly f'ed up and their reward was to be kept out of the fighting until the very last min at which time they all survived their own incompetence in the battle.

The SHIP was unlucky, the crew was lucky.

The torpedo drills were not their own idea. All the other ships were told to fire blanks at the Iowa for testing. Roosevelt was a big fan of watching naval combat and drills, and wanted them to show off. You know... without the actual live fire. They did get the signaling wrong and just confused the Iowa even more. The whole crew was not arrested for this action, only the person who fired the live torpedo. But they were reassigned elsewhere right after.
Yeah I think the misunderstanding comes from the fact that the torpedo primers weren't for the torpedo but for the launcher itself to provide the initial launch out of the tube.
So what did they accidentally signal?
@@romulas-cushmanproject3273 So whoever was doing the signaling was obviously braindead, because what they meant to signal was "Live torpedo in the water, evasive action" but what they actually signalled was "we are going to reverse at full speed"
I would suggest watching potential historys video on this ship, because it actually gives quite a bit more info
Also, the anchor incident, the depth charge misfire and shelling their own base never happened.
@@bkjeong4302 wait what? those things did happen. The anchor tore off a side railing to a sister ship. They did lose a depth charge and caused a panic. The shelling though wasn't really documented.
The message was for the OTHER ship to full reverse, to get out of the way of the torpedo
I think i recall Drachinifel saying that was their intent but was giving out the wrong signal so the other ship had no idea.
that might have been there intent, but they said in Morse code "WE are going to reverse full speed"
The fact that they almost torpedoed a ship with FDR is hilarious.
The actual recorded message was "live torpedo in water, evasive action." It was miss interpreted at full reverse by the iwoa
@@davidscott9097 At the time, Iowa was under a year old too. So they almost torpedoed a brand new battleship with a 2,000+ man crew and the president. There was also a dog named "Vicky" on Iowa at the time.

Just read the Wikipedia article about this ship. Turns out when Roosevelt was told that there was a torpedo headed towards the ship he was on he told his Secret Service guy to wheel him to the side of the ship so he could see. I’m surprised Sam didn’t put that in the video lol.
In Defense of the Sailors, most of them, up to that point, had never seen, let alone navigate, a body of water bigger than their nearest pond. Ship production was off the chain and we HAD to crew these new ships with someone. The President knew this, that is why he insisted that no punishment be administered as most of the crew had not even gotten over the sea sickness problems yet.

The ship had no control over the numerous misfortunes that befell it. Sounds like shit luck on the ship’s part to me. Poor boat. :(
I would nominate the Brazilian cruiser Bahia (a scout cruiser built in the UK for Brazil), it managed to sink itself in 1945.

The fact of the matter is is that most of these incidents (besides the Alaska one) are well documented, and anyone with access to Navy archives can trace them using dates, incident report numbers, and a lot of free time

Kamikaze does mean divine wind, from what I can remember they called it that because during what would have been an invasion of Japan by sea, powerful winds etc hit the invading fleet protecting japan. The emperor named the pilots after the wind so they’d be viewed as the divine protectors of Japan
This is correct. They are named in honor of the hurricans that hit the mongolians during medieval japan.
My understanding is Kamikaze is an Americanism, they were actually called something like “Special Attack”.
@@bastianhoffmann1223 Twice.
Yes! Kami 神 translates into god or spirit, so its like a "wind of god " kinda thing. When the Mongol Empire tired to invade Japan, both large attempts were stopped by timely winds which sank their invasion fleets. Japanese has then see their islands as protected by god of wind. Their official name is 特別攻擊隊, which directly translate to "Special Attack Team/Squad"
@@AnimeOtaku2 Not quite. It was an informal term japanese used. The formal term was Divine Wind Special Sttack Squad (though Divine Wind wasn't written Kamikaze), but the japanese press and people used the term Kamikaze as well. It's justr a nickname the squad got.
9:22 Kamchatka say hi
When the incorrect Morse code signal came from the William D. Porter, they were trying to judge how close the torpedo was to the Iowa. They misjudged the distance and speed of the torpedo and thought it would hit the Iowa on the front, when in reality it was closer to the rear. Luckily, the Iowa didn't follow through with the signal because if they had, they would have reversed into (or at least came a lot closer to) the torpedo explosion.

Kamikaze is Divine Wind. It was coined after a series of fortuitous typhoons that prevented a Mongol invasion of Japan.
It was also the name of at least 2 ships in the Japanese Navy, and the term Kamikaze is rarely used for the actual pilots or attacks, with there being a much more militaristic name for them.
Kamikaze is just the layman’s term.
神風(Kamikaze)
神(Kami) - God
風(Kaze) - Wind
When both Kanji are put together it means "Divine Wind" or "Spirit Wind."
Officially "特別攻撃隊 (Tokubetsu Kōgeki-tai)" meaning "Special Attack Unit."
The attacks themselves were known as "体当り(tai-atari)" meaning "body attack." Similar to the word "体あたり(karada atari)" meaning "ramming."

In regards to the light signals: in naval communications typically you have radios to talk to people. In the event that you have complete radio silence or all radio comms are down you can use lights to send morse code. Its actually still used today and Quartermasters (a naval rate or job usually just called QM) are required to know how to use lights for morse code in those specific situations
